After taking the catch, Iyer was seen making the medal gesture which has become so common with Team India fielders. Iyer was trying to indicate that he should be given the ‘best fielder’ medal that the team management has introduced to be handed over to a player after each game in the World Cup.

In the previous match against Bangladesh, Ravindra Jadeja was seen making the same gesture after taking a diving catch at the backward point to remove Mushfiqur Rahim. After the game, Jadeja was handed over the medal in the dressing room.

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have also won the medal in earlier matches. The ‘best fielder’ medal is an initiative by team management to create healthy competition among the players and keep them motivated during the World Cup.

The initiative is a brainchild of India’s fielding coach T Dilip who makes the final decision after each match and then hands over the medal to the winner.

Coming to the India vs New Zealand game.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first with both teams looking to continue their winning momentum. India and New Zealand have won four out of four matches respectively.

With Hardik Pandya missing due to an ankle injury, India have brought in Suryakumar Yadav and Mohammed Shami in their playing XI. Apart from Pandya, Shardul Thakur is also missing the New Zealand match.
