Women's Asia Cup 2022: Squads, fixtures, live streaming and everything you need to know about continental event

The Women’s Asia Cup is set to return to action for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic engulfed the planet with the eighth edition of the continental event taking place in Bangladesh, the home turf of the defending champions.

Much like the men’s event, the Women’s Asia Cup had last been held in 2018 and had to undergo multiple delays due to issues posed by the coronavirus pandemic that spread across the world in early 2020 and forced the cancellation or postponement of multiple sporting events that year.

Six-time champions India enter the tournament as the favourites given their recent success in the Commonwealth Games as well as in the limited-overs tour of England, as well as their overall record in the tournament.

India’s status as strong title contenders however, does not take anything away from the threat posed by teams such as Bangladesh, who beat the Women in Blue in the 2018 final in Kuala Lumpur to win their maiden title and become the first team other than India to lift the trophy.

Ahead of the tournament’s opening match, we take a look at the schedule, full squads and other details you need to know:

Wasim Jaffer takes hilarious dig at Deepti Sharma-Charlotte Dean run-out row

Can anyone beat Wasim Jaffer when it comes to witty tweets? We don’t think so. And his latest tweet on the Deepti Sharma-Charlotte Dean run-out controversy is just another example. During the third ODI between India and England on Saturday, 24 September, Deepti Sharma stopped in the middle of her bowling action and pulled off the bails at the non-striker’s end, sending Dean back to the pavilion. The run-out led to India sealing a 3-0 whitewash over England.

Several current and former players have since then dissected the incident, delivering their own verdicts on the controversy. English cricketers and media heavily criticised Deepti for her antics. Giving it back, Wasim Jaffer shared his stand on the controversy and we could smell loads of sarcasm. The former Indian cricketer decided to poke fun at the English media and the players using an incident from a cycling race.

Journalist Ian Fraser had shared a video explaining how “Italian cyclist Michael Guerra decided to use a plank while riding to use the advantage of aerodynamics to get past his opponents.” Retweeting the video, Jaffer said that an English cyclist would have never done such a thing, even if it was in the rule book. He wrote, “It may be within the rules, but it’s against the spirit of cycling. I’d never do it” an English cyclist said.”

It seems that the run-out controversy is not dying down anytime soon. While Deepti Sharma said that Dean was given multiple warnings for leaving the crease, the England cricketer refuted the claim, stating that she wasn’t given one.

Notably, the Marylebone Cricket Club — who are the custodians of the laws of cricket — had earlier this year removed this mode of dismissal from the ‘unfair play’ section of their laws, and added it to the ‘run out’ section. The ICC is slated to adopt the change from October 1.

MS Dhoni shows off his golf skills alongside Kapil Dev; watch video

MS Dhoni may have retired from international cricket, but that doesn’t mean that he is far from the headlines. The former India captain was spotted at the Kapil Dev – Grant Thornton Invitational 2022 in Gurgaon, where he played golf.

MS Dhoni was invited by Kapil Dev as a guest in the tournament. Photos and videos of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper enjoying his day out at the DLF Golf & Country Club, which is hosting the tournament, have been doing the rounds on the internet.

The social media account of Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) shared a video of Dhoni putting at the tournament, where the ex-India captain can be seen making his mark in another sport.

Dhoni has long been interested in golf. In 2019, he played his first-ever golf tournament as an honorary member of the US-based Metuchen Golf and Country Club (MGCC). Interestingly, he won four out his five matches and finished at the second spot in the flight category with his friend Rajiv Sharma. It was Sharma who had introduced Dhoni to golf.

Take a look at Dhoni’s day at the Kapil Dev – Grant Thornton Invitational:

In 2019, the wicketkeeper-batter was spotted with Kedar Jadhav on a golf course in the US. The duo, who were playing with some friends on the occasion of National Sports Day, seem to have had a blast at the outing.

Notably, this is not the first time MS Dhoni and Kapil Dev have been spotted together. The two were earlier seen attending the US Open this year. Pictures of the two World Cup winning captains sitting in the same stand went viral on the internet. They were attending the US Open quarter-final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

As for the Kapil Dev-Grant Thornton International, the tournament began on 27 September and is now at an exciting stage, with Varun Parikh in the lead. The winner of the event will get a prize money of Rs 1 crore.

'If it's been a bad day, I switch off...': Jasprit Bumrah on struggles with setbacks as T20 World Cup berth slips away

Jasprit Bumrah’s T20 World Cup was dashed on Friday as reports emerged that stress back fracture may force him to miss the T20 extravaganza Down Under. The 28-year-old pacer was also removed from the Indian squad competing in the home series against South Africa. Jasprit Bumrah was reportedly undergoing a scan in Bangalore, where National Cricket Academy (NCA) medical staff will take a final call on his World Cup participation.

While it’s hard to imagine what Jasprit Bumrah is going through after possibly missing out on the Australia ticket, Bumrah did open up during an interview with GQ India on his struggles with setbacks and how he deals with them.

“If it’s been a bad day, I switch off for a while. If my mind starts to wander, I divert it to something else,” said Bumrah. “Then I come back and I analyse. Good day or bad, I analyse it and tell myself to remember what produced results. I depend on my own evaluation, but when I don’t have answers then I look to people I trust and believe in.

“Then I go to the coaches and seek advice. But after that, I filter the noise out, because at the end of the day I understand my game better than anyone else. I’ve made a career on my own.”

Tragedy struck Bumrah early in his life as he lost his father at the age of five and forced the cricketer to grow early as he saw some tough days growing up. He credited her mother to keep the family together through the torrid time.

“My mother had to start working. We had seen ups, and then one day we were back to zero. So now, when we are back to another high, we stay stable because we have seen that low. We know that we cannot go crazy. That period has taught us so much.

“My mother has done so much for us, and we cannot ever repay her. We’ve bonded as a family because of what we’ve gone through and we’re very grateful for what we’ve received. We know how the world changes when things don’t go well. That’s why today we’re respectful of the good times and remain humble,” said Bumrah.

Used to be an aggressive person: Bumrah

The pacer has often terrorised batters with his accuracy in line and length and awkward bowling style but is not known for showing needless aggression on the field. There have been an incident or two in the past but thatt’s about it as the pacer said he was not always the calm guy he is now.

“No, I was not always like this. In fact, when I started playing cricket it was the other way around. I was a little too aggressive, always on the go, always sitting on the edge… I could get angry really quickly. But then I realized that moving further if my emotions are not kept in check, then there’s going to be a lot of variation in my results,” Bumrah said.

The pacer added that he understood that his aggression often caused him trouble than did favours and relied on his experience to get better off it.

“I quickly understood that if this was the game that I always wanted to excel in, I needed to figure out how to control my emotions. Stability really helps. I learned that on the go; obviously you learn from experiences, you make mistakes. I chose to look at these experiences and then asked myself how I could get the best out of these situations,” said Bumrah.

Pakistan vs England 6th T20I: Focus remains on hosts' middle-order

The ongoing Pakistan vs England T20 series has been a treat to watch with some nail-biting matches keeping fans at edge of their seat. Five matches have been played already and two more left to play, but one just can’t get enough of it with the way the two sides have contested against each other.

It won’t be wrong to say that the Pakistan vs England sixth T20 could well be another treat to watch as the visitors play to keep themselves ahead in the series at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Friday.

Rizwan likely to be rested

Some comfort could be on the offer for the English side, who trail 2-3 in the series, as Pakistan’s MVP Mohammad Rizwan may sit out the game.

The wicket-keeper batter, who scored four half centuries in five games and is the highest scorer (315 runs) in the series, didn’t take the field after scoring a well-crafted 63 in first innings of the fifth T20 two days ago. The 30-year-old ‘keeper was replaced by Mohammad Harris behind the stumps in the second innings.

Pakistan’s batting concerns

While resting Rizwan with World Cup in mind is thoroughly justifiable, it also presents remaining Pakistan batters to prove their credentials because very few of them have impressed in the series so far. Barring Rizwan and captain Babar Azam (194), none of the batters have scored more than 100 runs.

There’s concern over Azam’s consistency as well with express English pacer Mark Wood making his life difficult in the last two games. To Azam’s benefit, Wood is likely to miss the game but won’t solve his prevailing weakness against genuine pace.

The elegant right-hander is not facing any heat like Shan Masood, who is the team’s third-highest scorer but at a lowly 100 runs and has been misfiring. It did surprise many as the 32-year-old was in good form at the domestic level and impressed in the third T20 with a 65 not out in a losing cause. Since then, however, he has failed to perform with knocks of 21 and 7 respectively.

Rest for Haris Rauf?

As far as their bowling is concerned, Pakistan are also expected to rest their in-form pacer Haris Rauf as the right-armer has been carrying the load of fast bowling on his shoulders with eight wickets in five games. Rauf still may feature in the game after teenager Naseem Shah was ruled out of the series after returning COVID-19 positive.

Is Aamer Jamal the answer to Pakistan’s death bowling woes?

Pakistan entered the tournament amid rich bowling talents in Hasnain, Dahani and Naseem but conceding runs at a canter during the death overs exposed the inexperience in bowling. The weakness was pointed out by Pakistan legend Inzamam Ul-Haq as well, who felt Pakistan bowling lacks the venom to go all the way in the T20 World Cup.

That perception may change with Aamer Jamal showing nerves of steel on his debut two nights ago. Defending 15 off the last over, Jamal’s accuracy with the yorker length kept a pinch-hitter like Moeen Ali quiet as Pak clinched the match. However, just one-game heroics can’t be enough to the term the 26-year-old bowler as a death-over specialist and he would need to deliver the goods on a consistent basis.

England succumbing under pressure

England, on the other hand, have problems of their own as the side has shown they are prone to collapse while chasing. In the last two matches, England were cruising at one point before they let Pakistan get back in. Much of the blame falls on the English top-order, who hasn’t provided the desired start as frequently as the side would have wanted. Likes of Phil Salt, Alex Hales and Dawid Malan have not been a terror to their bowling rivals as they turned out to be in various franchise leagues around the globe.

Malan, in particular, was expected to lead the English batting order but his batting approach hasn’t really suited the England team’s fire-from-the-start approach.

Neeraj Chopra performs Garba during Navratri celebrations in Vadodara on sidelines of National Games; Watch video

India’s star javelin thrower and Tokyo Olympic Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra participated in a Garba celebration on 28 September in Gujarat’s Vadodara.

The ace athlete arrived in the city for the 36th National Games’ official opening ceremony. He then took a break from his busy schedule to celebrate Gujarati-style Navratri and perform Garba.

Neeraj was spotted in an eye-catching traditional jacket. In addition, he performed aarti and puja for the goddess before making his way to the Garba ground. Numerous individuals had the opportunity to dance with the Diamond League champion as thousands of people were present at the venue to enjoy Navratri.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) brought out the exclusive sight with a video of Chopra interacting with the huge crowd from the stage. The public was visibly excited as they gave him a spectacular welcome. The audience went on to chant his name as Chopra said on the mic, “Happy Navratri to all. It’s a great pleasure to join you here.”

SAI captioned the video, “Olympic Gold Medalist and World Champion, Neeraj Chopra, joins in to enjoy Garba in Vadodara, which is part of the Navratra celebrations in Gujarat, during his visit for the 36th National Games.”

Users got delighted after watching Chopra celebrate the occasion. One person wrote, “Nice to see a real-life HERO getting so much love and blessings from the people of Gujarat.”

Another individual noted, “Feel Proud, such a Gem got down to Earth.”

It has been a wonderful year for Chopra. He won the silver medal in the World Athletics Championships while also breaking the National javelin throw record twice. The Diamond League title in Zurich is his latest achievement. Neeraj’s only setback of the year was an injury he sustained at the World Championships that prevented him from competing in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The Diamond League championship marked the end of his journey this season as he had previously stated that he wouldn’t be competing in this year’s National Games. Chopra had explained his decision saying, “I talked to my coach, and he suggested me to forego it so that I could recover and get ready for a vital season next year. We can’t just focus on tournaments and medals; rest and recreation are also crucial for athletes. A solid off-season is crucial because a season causes the body to go through a lot of wear-and-tear and exhaustion.”

Pakistan vs England: Moeen Ali urges England teammates to learn from Mohammad Rizwan

Mohammad Rizwan has been in amazing form in ongoing Pakistan vs England T20 series with as many as four half-centuries in five games. His efforts have certainly left an impression on the visitor’s stand-in captain Moeen Ali, who urged his teammates to learn how to grind out runs in tough conditions with England going 2-3 down in the seven-match series.

“He (Rizwan) is a brilliant player and is hard to stop. He is very busy and hits boundaries in awkward positions,” said Ali after the match. ” He is somebody we can learn a lot from. He saw the situation and adapted to the wicket and has been free-flowing all the time. He took the risks when he needed to and played properly. We have found him quite difficult to bowl to so far.”

Rizwan has accumulated 315 runs in the series so far while scoring at an average of 78.75 and striking at a rate of 140.63. It won’t be wrong to say that the batter has scored the bulk of the team’s runs alone as barring captain Babar Azam, rest of the Pakistan batters haven’t gone beyond 100 runs in the series.

The form of England batters has been weak as well as in two back-to-back games they failed to chase down the target despite the odds being in their favour. Chasing 146 in Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday night, England could only manage 139 as debutant pacer Aamer Jamal defendend 15 runs in the last over.

England skipper Ali termed the loss to lack of one good partnership.

“I feel that out of all the games, it was the most disappointing one with the way we batted in particular. Of course, we want to play the attacking brand of cricket, but you also have to see the situation of the game and the conditions. Today, all we needed was partnership. Had we put up a 60-70 run partnership, we would have won the game,” Moeen said in the post-match presser.

BBL and WBBL to have DRS; Bash Boost and X-Factor removed

The Decision Review System (DRS) technology will be introduced into the upcoming seasons of Big Bash League (BBL) and Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) for the first time, while the Bash Boost point and X-Factor substitution have been removed and the Power Surge will be implemented in the WBBL for the first time.

Cricket Australia on Thursday announced a host of changes for the next BBL and WBBL seasons.

The DRS will be implemented in all BBL matches and 24 WBBL matches shown on both Seven and Foxtel, including Finals. The remaining 35 WBBLmatches, to be broadcast on Foxtel and cricket.com.au, will be produced via live stream technology which does not currently support DRS.

CA in its statement said, “The League will continue to strive towards greater DRS coverage for future WBBL seasons.”

An innings clock will be introduced in BBL, requiring fielding teams to commence the last over inside 79 minutes (plus allowances). Failure to meet this requirement will result in an in-game penalty, with the fielding team limited to four fielders outside the field restriction circle for the remainder of the innings.

The WBBL will not have an innings clock.

Power Surge has been extended to WBBL which all matches in both competitions will now feature a four-over Powerplay at the beginning of each innings, with a two-over Power Surge to be called by the batting team between overs 11-20. Only two fielders may be outside the field restriction circle during these times.

After two years of implementation, both the Bash Boost point and X-Factor substitution have been removed from the BBL Playing Conditions.

Teams will now revert to naming a standard playing XI, 12th and substitute fielders, while competition points will be reverted to two for a win, one for a tie or abandoned match and zero for a loss.

The WBBL 08 season begins on 13 October, while the BBL 12 season starts on 13 December.

Jasprit Bumrah misses India vs South Africa 1st T20 due to back pain; Yuzvendra Chahal rested

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah missed out on India vs South Africa 1st T20 scheduled to begin in Kochi on Wednesday due to a back pain, confirmed BCCI on Twitter through its official handle. Among other notable names, missing the match was experienced spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

“Jasprit Bumrah complained of back pain during India’s practice session on Tuesday. The BCCI Medical Team assessed him. He is ruled out of the first #INDvSA T20I,” wrote BCCI.

Chahal’s absence, on the other hand, was confirmed by Team India captain Rohit Sharma, who added that Deepak Chahar and R Ashwin will replace the duo in like-for-like replacements.

“Bumrah had a niggle in the morning so he misses out and Chahal misses out as well. Deepak chahar and Ashwin are back,” said Sharma, who also opted to bowl first after winning the toss.

India already have a depleted bowling strength for the series with Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami not in the mix for the series. While Pandya and Kumar is rested, Shami couldn’t recover in time from COVID-19. Umesh Yadav was named as his late replacement two days ago.

Shami, who has already been snubbed for the T20 World Cup, tested negative on Wednesday and could be seen as a replacement for Bumrah if BCCI urges caution with their premium pace bowler.

India vs South Africa, LIVE Score

Hello and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the first T20I between India and South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram. This is a chance for both teams to finalise their preparations ahead of the T20 World Cup in October.

Preview: India will be looking to round off their T20 World Cup preparation with a marked improvement in their death bowling besides providing crucial game time to its untested players in the three-match series against South Africa, beginning here on Wednesday.

India skipper Rohit Sharma, expectedly, singled out death bowling as an area that requires improvement following the series win over Australia.

The hosts will be without two of their key bowlers, Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who have been rested ahead of the ICC event next month.

Mohammed Shami, though, has tested negative for COVID-19, but will remain unavailable for the South Africa T20Is.

Harshal Patel did not have the best of times in his comeback series against Australia but he will be expected to get back to his best in the final three games before the World Cup.

His career economy rate stands at 9.05 but he conceded more than 12 runs per over against the Aussies.

Deepak Chahar, who is also on standby for the Word Cup, did not get a game in the previous series and he could get a chance if the team decides to rotate its pacers over the three games.

Arshdeep Singh will return to bolster the team’s resources in the slog overs, making an effective combination alongside Jasprit Bumrah, who will be aiming to regain his full rhythm after coming back from injury.

In the series decider against Australia, Yuzvendra Chahal showed what he can do if the ball is gripping and turning after looking flat in the first two games.

Keeping the Australian conditions in mind, the wily leg-spinner will be looking to up his game on docile pitches.

As Rohit spoke about the importance of giving all the players game time ahead of the World Cup, R Ashwin could get a look in.

In the batting department, K L Rahul would like to make the most of these three games after missing out on the last two games against Australia.

With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma looking in good touch, it is important that Rahul too is in full flow before the team travels to Australia.

Dinesh Karthik got to play all eight balls against Australia and Rohit has already said the designated finisher in the squad needs more time in the middle.

Sourav Ganguly waves tricolour from 'Lord’s balcony' in Kolkata Durga Puja pandal

A Kolkata community created a Lord’s balcony replica next to a Durag Puja pandal to commemorate Sourav Ganguly’s iconic shirt-waving celebration on the occasion.

Durga puja has evolved into an integral part of Indian culture over time, with countless individuals enjoying this event in their own distinctive manner while adhering to traditions.

Beyond religion, the significance of Durga Puja is appreciated as a celebration of kindness, brotherhood, humanity, art, and culture. Kolkata, the city of joy, becomes a glittering planet that draws people from every part of the country to witness this biggest festival here. Numerous pandals are built all around the city that amaze the visitors. Though the auspicious event is yet to begin officially, some pandals have already been made open.

On 27 August, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly – Kolkata’s very own Dada – inaugurated the Durga puja pandal of the Mitali Sangha community in Garia. The organisers have chosen Ganguly’s iconic Lord’s moment as their theme this year. The puja Committee set up a replica of Lord’s Balcony next to the pandal for him.

According to the organisers, they had made this special arrangement for Ganguly to celebrate the Indian legend’s 50th birthday this year. Along with the former cricketer, West Bengal’s Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Arup Biswas was also present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Ganguly spent some moments there and also waved the tricolour from the Lord’s-like pavilion. A large number of fans arrived at the pandal to enjoy the beautiful sight.

Ganguly shares a special bonding with Lord’s since India’s historic NatWest tri-series win at the ground in 2002. The Men in Blue, under the leadership of Dada, beat hosts England in the summit game powered by outstanding batting performances of Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif. During the chase of a mammoth 326-run target, Yuvraj scored 69 runs off 63 deliveries, while Kaif smashed a crucial 87 runs in 75 balls, taking the side across the victory line in what augured out to be a nail-biting thriller.

As soon as India confirmed the triumph, the skipper burst his emotions out and waved his t-shirt, bare chest, from the balcony. Ganguly also played a pivotal role in the victory, building a concrete foundation for the chase.

Coming in to open the innings with Virender Sehwag, the southpaw registered 60 runs off 40 balls including as many as 10 boundaries and a maximum to his name. The openers stitched a 100-run partnership before the middle order collapse and two youngsters had to take the mettle in their own hands.

Jehan Daruvala Interview: 'Had the time of my life in F2, need to make a sensible decision for my future'

If you are a junior driver looking for a big break in Formula 1, 2023 is your best chance. Six Formula 1 teams had/have at least one vacancy for the upcoming season — that’s more than 50% of the teams in the paddock.

The domino effect from Sebastian Vettel’s unexpected retirement and Mclaren’s expected release of Daniel Ricciardo has seen vacancies crop up at Alpine, Williams and AlphaTauri apart from Aston Martin & Mclaren. Haas is yet to decide on Mick Schumacher, too.

Despite this situation, the prospects for 2023 seem bleak for India’s Formula 1-hopeful Jehan Daruvala. In an exclusive interview with Firstpost, Jehan Daruvala confirmed that he wasn’t in conversation with either of the teams with a vacancy for 2023. He admitted, “I needed to win the Formula 2 championship this year to race in Formula 1 with AlphaTauri in 2023 – and of course, I’ve failed to win. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to fight for the championship as I would’ve wanted to. But it is what it is, that’s racing.”

Last week, AlphaTauri announced an extension for Jehan’s former Formula 2 team-mate (Carlin, 2020), Yuki Tsunoda. The Japanese driver will race for the Red Bull-funded team for a third consecutive season. One assumes that Red Bull Racing were waiting to see how their junior drivers perform in Formula 2 in 2022 before deciding on Tsunoda for 2023. A broad consensus is that Tsunoda didn’t set the track on fire but the lack of results for juniors in Formula 2 prompted Red Bull to go unchanged for next season.

Jehan offered more perspective on missing out on the AlphaTauri seat, “If (Felipe) Drugovich can win the Formula 2 title (in 2022) and still not go to Formula 1 (in 2023), I’m not going to Formula 1 finishing fifth*. Frankly, I have no idea what I am going to do in 2023. Formula 1 (a full-time race seat) isn’t on the cards next year so I am looking at other options.”

But even if Jehan might not be the third Indian to race in Formula 1, he is probably the most successful Indian in single-seaters.

(* the last round of the 2022 Formula 2 season will be held in November at Abu Dhabi so Jehan’s final classification in the Drivers’ Championship could change)

Formula 2 career

After finishing 3rd in the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2019, Jehan graduated to Formula 2 in 2020. He spent the first two seasons with Carlin — registering 7th as his highest championship classification in 2021. For 2022, he switched to the reigning Teams’ Champions, Prema — also the team that clinched the last two Drivers’ Championships with Mick Schumacher (2020) and Oscar Piastri (2021).

Understandably, the expectations from Jehan for 2022 were to follow the steps of his predecessors. Helmut Marko, the Head of Red Bull’s junior driver program, reiterated each time I spoke to him that the target for Jehan in 2022 was to win the Formula 2 Championship. During one of our pre-season chats earlier this year, Jehan also confirmed that his sole target was to win the 2022 Formula 2 championship and be in Formula 1 in 2023 on merit.

However, with one round to go (Abu Dhabi), Jehan is 5th in the Drivers’ Championship with 126 points. Jehan explains, “Honestly, considering the pace we’ve had and bad luck through the year, I am still in the frame to fight for third in the championship and that is quite astonishing.”

Feature Race win in Monza

The Italian round at Monza (9-11 September) brought some fantastic news for Jehan as he put on his most-dominant performance ever. He scored a podium in the Sprint Race on Saturday and drove to his first-ever Feature Race win on Sunday.

Reliving the triumph, Jehan said, “I would probably say it was the most-happy racing day of my life! I’ve not celebrated a win as much in a long time. First, it was the feature race. Second, the struggles we’ve had through the season — and leading up to Monza. It was a really tough time in my racing career. So to score a podium and finish off the weekend with a win was fantastic. I was competitive all through the weekend and we deserved this result after a lot of bad luck through the season.”

The win wasn’t a straightforward one and Jehan explained further, “The race was a mix of fortunes and misfortunes. On lap 1, I had contact with (Jack) Doohan and my bargeboard was hanging off the car and flapping — and I had decided to pit for a change at the end of the lap, otherwise I was risking a black-orange flag. But when I went through Ascari, my bargeboard flew off thanks to the speed, and it wasn’t a hazard any more. So I got rid of the bargeboard but I had less downforce for the race.

“Then the Safety Car came out — and I made the call to pit. And soon, the race was Red Flagged — and that was good for me because I could re-attach my bargeboard. But then again post-race, I had to go see the Stewards for my incident with Doohan. For two hours post-race, I was a bit tense and memories of Austria came back to my mind (where he lost the race win due to a post-race penalty). For once, luck was on my side and I didn’t get a penalty for a lap 1 incident. It was a tense race and I was very happy to score the win.”

An ecstatic Jehan explained his post-race win celebrations, “On the in-lap, I’ve never waved to the crowd as much ever in my career — I think I had my whole hand out of the cockpit! As the commentator rightly said, I think I punched out the frustration of the entire season in that one race.

“Technically, I won the Feature Race in Austria before I got the penalty (for grid infringement) — but I still did win it on track. At Monza, even though I got lucky with the Safety Car, I won the race on merit. It meant a lot to win the Feature Race. It’s another box ticked in my Formula 2 career. I’ve had many podiums and race wins in Formula 2 and to finally win a Feature Race meant the world to me.”

Jehan now has the same number of wins (four) in Formula 2 as fellow Red Bull junior driver Liam Lawson (who participated in the FP1 session at the Belgium Grand Prix for AlphaTauri) and current Williams Formula 1 driver, Alexander Albon (also a Red Bull associated driver). In fact, Jehan has scored more wins than the 2020 Formula 2 Champion, Mick Schumacher.

Mid-season struggles

In the ten races between Silverstone and Monza, Jehan managed to score in only three of them, accumulating fifteen points along the way. Instead of holding third in the Drivers’ Championship and closing ground on the rivals ahead, Jehan began to lose ground to the drivers behind him. The mid-season slump saw him drop down to a lowly 9th place (pre-Monza).

Average points per round:

Pre-Silverstone: 11.42 points

Post-Silverstone: 3 points

The three most-costly rounds included a power loss in the Feature Race in Spain (fuel loss) while starting 4th on the grid. In Austria, Jehan won the Feature Race but received a 20-second post-race penalty because Prema attempted to dry the track surface at this grid slot before the race. And finally, a failure to even start the Sprint Race in Belgium owing to a fuel pump failure on his way to the grid. Inarguably, these errors were down to the team and not the driver.

Explaining the mid-season struggles in detail, Jehan said, “It’s hard to pinpoint one thing that was lacking. Frankly, we weren’t quick in qualifying. But that’s not always an issue in Formula 2 because in hour-long races, one can fight back. But our mid-season issue was our race pace. And in the first half of the season, race pace was my strength.

“At Silverstone, I was quickest in race pace (on average, across the field). From there, we went to become the slowest. Even though we lucked into a win in Austria, we didn’t have the pace there. Roberto (Merhi) jumped into a Campos for a weekend and he was quicker than me in the full race. At Budapest and other venues, we struggled even more. It wasn’t an easy time for any one of us.

“I’m in the third season in Formula 2 and have ample experience in tyre management — how much to push and when to push. But things were happening unexpectedly and I wasn’t in control anymore. It was definitely not easy because others could push more and keep tyres alive for much longer. Even when we were saving tyres, when we went to attack we could completely drop off and be out of our performance window.

“There wasn’t an issue with the car, per se. With the same setup as last year’s car, the behaviour in the data and the characteristics of what the car was doing on track wasn’t the same as last year. Now with a different setup we’re having the same characteristics as we experienced last year.”

The triple header that happened before Monza (Belgium-Netherlands-Italy) was where Jehan especially struggled — scoring just one point in the six races prior to Monza. He shared, “Mentally, I wasn’t in the best frame of mind. I wasn’t happy with how I drove in Zandvoort. So it was nice to bounce back the next week in Monza. We did make a step forward in Zandvoort and Monza — but I couldn’t unlock it in Zandvoort. I was looking forward to Monza because it is one of my favourite tracks. In the week leading up to Monza, I thought to myself that if I am slow around Monza then something is definitely not right.

“In Monza, we showed pace in qualifying and the race. If not for the yellow flag in qualifying, I was in the frame for pole position. It gives me confidence that not only did we win, but we were fast.”

Are Prema-Jehan back?

Shares Jehan, “Prema is a champion team and made the most of the summer break to figure out what was wrong. We got to the bottom of our issues. It’s not a coincidence that we have found some pace.

“In Formula 2, it’s hard to pinpoint why we struggled mid-season. For example, we don’t know if the compound of tyres are the same as last year and small things can make a big difference. Prema had a fast car all of last year so when we go to tracks, it’s difficult to not use the same setup as the year before. But now we know what was wrong and we’re carrying that same offset throughout,” said Jehan.

Jehan sounded very upbeat for Abu Dhabi. “I believe that Prema has sorted out the issues. I’m not going to say that we’re going to be flying in Abu Dhabi but we will be competitive. The aim is to sign off the season with third in the Drivers’ Championship and as the highest-placed Red Bull junior driver,” said an excited Jehan, though admitting that a late-season surge in performances might not make much of a difference to grab a race seat in Formula 1 in 2023.

Final Formula 2 race

The weekend in Abu Dhabi will also be Jehan’s final one in Formula 2. Jehan has raced in a total of 72 races in Formula 2 ((excluding the final round in Abu Dhabi), securing four pole positions, fifteen podiums and four race wins.

Reflecting on his Formula 2 career, Jehan said, “I’ve had the time of my life driving race cars. I have no regrets because I have had all the opportunities in the world. I look forward to enjoying my last race weekend in Formula 2. I can fight for 3rd in the championship and I will go to Abu Dhabi the same way I approached Monza. I like the track and won there in 2020 (Sprint Race). I want to go out and have fun — and finish my Formula 2 career on a high. I only have a lot of fun when I am doing well — so that’s the goal for the weekend. I want to be strong throughout the three days — to start on the front row for the Feature Race and score a lot of points. In the end, if I finish 3rd in the championship, it’ll be a bonus!”

The future — Formula 1, Formula E, IndyCar, WEC?

The excitement for Abu Dhabi aside, there are key questions surrounding Jehan’s career next year — what series will he race in? Does he have any slim chance in Formula 1? Will he participate in an FP1 session with a team in 2022 or in the post-season young drivers’ test in Abu Dhabi?

Firstly, Jehan confirmed that he wouldn’t be participating in an FP1 session or the young drivers’ test this season. “I think circumstances haven’t favoured me this season. I feel I’ve had my strongest season as a driver but the results don’t speak for themselves. I would’ve loved to participate in a shoot-out with other prospects to push my case further. But I don’t want to keep waiting for Formula 1 and miss out on other good opportunities to further my Motorsport career.”

Jehan Daruvala

Expressing the challenge further, he said, “There are hundreds of us trying every year and probably one, if not anyone, makes it to Formula 1. I’ve kind of learned to accept it, but not fully accept it. I don’t want to give up on my dream of racing in Formula 1 but I have to be realistic. It’s definitely not been easy, but it’s the reality of being a racing car driver. I need to think more about my future of being a professional driver and earning my living from racing.

Jehan continued, “Formula E and IndyCar are two series I would definitely love to race in. In my view, Formula E has a very bright future. Right now, my priority is to race in single-seaters. If I could race in the WEC (World Endurance Championship) on the side, that would also be quite cool. It would be a new experience for me.”

Formula E has been a happy hunting ground for race drivers — current Formula 1 drivers Alexander Albon and Pierre Gasly (also former Red Bull junior drivers) explored Formula E briefly while waiting for a promotion to Formula 1. Nyck De Vries, the 2020-21 Formula E World Champion, is hot on the radar for at least two Formula 1 teams for 2023 (Williams and AlphaTauri).

For Indian Motorsport fans, Jehan and Mahindra Racing would be a dream union — an Indian driver racing for the Indian-owned team. Such a union would also make more sense given that Formula E’s Indian ePrix is scheduled to be hosted in Hyderabad in February 2023. However, Mahindra Racing has finalised their driver-line up for the 2022-23 season.

But there could be more options for Jehan: Jaguar Racing is another team with an Indian connection while Jehan has forged a relationship with Mclaren while testing their Formula 1 car this year. Mclaren will debut in Formula E in the upcoming season and have only one driver announced yet.

Formula E

Clarifying his interests further, Jehan explained, “Most Formula E teams already have their driver line-ups confirmed for next season. At the moment, I can’t reveal much but coming off a good weekend in Monza definitely helps in these talks. So whatever I do, it has to be a semi-futuristic plan. It could be that I join as a rookie with an option to race in the following season.

“Frankly, I’m not sure what 2023 holds. But Nyck De Vries (former Formula 2 and Formula E champion) is a good example. He was out of Formula 1 for a few years but a good debut race in Monza (with Williams) and he’s the driver in demand. The main goal is to be quick in whatever I race in next; that’s my only chance to make it to Formula 1. It’s not that I’ve given up on racing in Formula 1, just that realistically there’s no opening for me.

“A nice option for me to pursue in 2023 would be a reserve role in Formula 1 while racing in another single-seater series. Hopefully, there are good options for me — but I will know more in the next 2-3 weeks. It’s crunch time and I need to make a sensible decision for my future.”

Rishabh Pant or Dinesh Karthik: India vs South Africa T20Is likely to settle the wrangling debate

Team India’s T20I series against South Africa is their last chance to fine-tune the squad and test combinations ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022, which is scheduled to begin from 16 October. With Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar rested, the likes of Rishabh Pant and others are in contention to play in what is the final run of games heading into the month-long T20 spectacle in Australia.

India skipper Rohit Sharma will have to nurse a selection headache for the T20I series against the Proteas considering that this is also the last chance for some players to get some match time before the much-awaited T20 World Cup.

Last chance for Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik to make a convincing case

Both Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant are part of India’s T20 World Cup squad and with both of them playing the same role of wicketkeeper-batter, it is highly probable that only one between the two will be picked in the playing XI for the marquee event.

Hence, the big question which still haunts the Team India management is – Pant or Karthik? Which player is suitable for their lineup?

Karthik and Pant have not got enough game time ahead of the T20 World Cup and the same was acknowledged by pack leader Rohit Sharma after the recently-concluded T20I series against Australia.

“It depends on the situation. I obviously wanted these guys to have a number of games under their belt before the World Cup. When we went to the Asia Cup, both these guys were in the fray to play all the games or whenever there is an opportunity or if there is a tactical matchup, we can bring in those guys. But I just feel that Dinesh needs a little more game time, so does Pant,” Rohit said during a press conference.

“Honestly speaking, Pant needs some game time as well. But looking at how this series was important for me to just stick to that consistent batting lineup,” said Sharma during the post-match press conference after India defeated Australia by six wickets in the third T20I here on Sunday to win the series 2-1.

Going by Rohit’s statement, it is likely that both Pant and Karthik will make it to the playing XI for the three-match T20I series against South Africa, which is scheduled to begin from 28 September.

Karthik to retain his place

Dinesh Karthik was picked for all three T20Is against Australia but did not get enough time to bat. He faced five balls in the first match at Mohali and scored six runs, while in the second T20I, he faced two balls and blasted a six and four to seal victory for India.

In the third match in Hyderabad, the 37-year-old from Tamil Nadu faced only 1 ball and remained not out with one run.

Hence, Karthik is all but certain to retain his place in India’s playing XI for the T20I series against South Africa, but it will be his performance in the series which will decide if he’s fit to feature in India’s playing XI in the T20 World Cup.

Rishabh likely to get game time in Hardik Pandya’s absence

Rishabh, who didn’t play a single match against Australia in the recently concluded T20I series, last featured in the Asia Cup 2022 against Hong Kong when Hardik was rested and the same could be the case once again. With star all-rounder rested for the South Africa T20I series, Pant can find his place back in the playing XI.

Moreover, Pant is considered as a floating batter by the management, which makes it easy for India’s think tank to bring him back into playing XI.

Last chance for Rishabh Pant?

With the T20I series against South Africa being considered a dress rehearsal for India ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022, it is more or less the last chance for Rishabh Pant to impress Rohit and management in order to cement his place in the XI.

With Karthik already being considered for the role of finisher, it is Pant who will have to put his hand up and present a strong case for the middle-order role.

India will take a call on whom to play depending on the situation: Rohit Sharma

“We have said that we want to be flexible in our batting, so if the situation or if the thing demands that we need a left-hander, we will bring in a left-hander, if we need a right-hand, we will continue to do that,” Rohit had said after the Australia series.

Going by the aforementioned statement, one can deduce that many other factors – opposition’s strength and weakness, ground size, pitch conditions, team’s combination, etc. will come into play when Team India’s management picks between Pant and Karthik in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Magnus Carlsen vs Hans Niemann: The cheating controversy which has the chess world shook

A cheating scandal has rocked the chess world and at the centre of the controversy are two players — World Champion Magnus Carlsen, the accuser, and American teenager Hans Niemann, the defendant. Carlsen had indirectly hinted at being irked by the presence of Niemann at tournaments and with cryptic messages. On Tuesday, he spoke openly on the matter.

“I believe that Niemann has cheated more—and more recently—than he has publicly admitted,” Carlsen said in his statement on Twitter. The world champion’s accusation has opened pandora’s box with other elite athletes and members of the chess fraternity sharing fear over cheating in chess.

How did it all begin?

Early this month, at the Sinquefield Cup in St Louis (USA), Carlsen, who has been the Chess No 1 for over a decade, lost in a shocking manner to Niemann. The defeat was considered even more surprising because Niemann was playing with black pieces, considered a disadvantage in chess.

Even in the match, Carsen employed an unusual sequence of moves to get the better of Niemann but it went in vain. The American said later that he had prepared for the unusual move coincidentally earlier in the day.

Niemann also said: “I think he was just so demoralised, because he’s losing to such an idiot like me. It must be embarrassing for the World Champion to lose to me. I feel bad for him.”

The five-time defending World Champion then withdrew from the tournament posting a cryptic tweet, that fuelled the rumours that Niemann cheated in the Sinquefield Cup.

What happened after that?

One of the rumours was that Niemann was using wireless anal beads that vibrates him the right moves with the help of a computer chess engine. This theory was popularlised on Twitter by Tesla founder Elon Musk who joked about it in a since-deleted tweet.

In reply, Niemann admitted to using a chess engine to cheat at unrated (without involving money) online chess events (when he was 12 and 16) but added that he has not cheated since then. He also offered to play naked to prove innocence.

“If they want me to strip fully naked, I will do it. I don’t care. Because I know I am clean. You want me to play in a closed box with zero electronic transmission, I don’t care,” he said in an interview.

None of this convinced Carlsen because the Norwegian resigned after one move in his next match against Niemann at the Julius Baer Generation Cup.

What is the latest?

On Tuesday, after winning the Julius Baer Generation Cup, Carlsen released a statement on Twitter directly accusing Niemann of cheating.

He said Niemann has “cheated more than he has publicly admitted” and refused to play him in the future.

“I don’t want to play against people who have repeatedly cheated in the past, because I don’t know what they are capable of doing in the future,” the statement read.

Is it possible to cheat in chess?

Carlsen is not the only one who feels cheating is happening in chess. Other grandmasters have also supported Carlsen after his statement and have suggested that cheating is an issue.

While over-the-board cheating is tough, a chess grandmaster was found cheating with a phone in the bathroom in 2019. The chess fraternity has now demanded tougher measures to tackle cheating.

What happens now?

Carlsen has accused Niemann of cheating but he doesn’t have any concrete proof and it’s highly unlikely any proof will be available anytime soon.

“Unfortunately, at this time I am limited in what I can say without explicit permission from Niemann to speak openly,” Carlsen also wrote in his statement.
