What is Dead Loop? The gymnastic move which got banned at 1972 Munich Olympics

New Delhi: After video footage of Olympian Olga Korbut’s banned ‘Dead Loop’ gymnastic move resurfaced on the internet earlier this year and rapidly turned viral, netizens were left wondering what the move meant and why had it been banned in the first place.

The ‘Dead Loop’ is a classic gymnastic move that consists of a gymnast standing on the high bar, performing a backflip and grasping the bar again. Needless to say, it is a dangerous stunt and can go horribly wrong if the gymnast misses his or her footing or does not manage to grasp the bar in the end.

The viral video, which has notched up over 2 million hits on Twitter and other social media platforms, shows Korbut performing the dangerous gymnastic stunt at the 1972 Munich Olympics. She was representing the erstwhile Soviet Union.

It was perhaps one of the last few times that the ‘Dead Loop’ was performed.

Shortly after the Olympic gold medallist’s stunning performance in the 1972 Munich Olympics, the ‘Dead Loop’ was banned from gymnastics and never performed in high-level international sporting competitions again. Experts pointed out the immense risks involved in its performance and dissuaded gymnasts across the world from trying to replicate Korbut’s success.

The ‘Dead Loop’ is also known as the Korbut Flip after Olga Korbut.

Watch: Afghanistan's dressing room celebrations after team enters Asia Cup Super-4

Afghanistan showcased their dominance on Tuesday night and became the first team to enter into the Super-four of the ongoing Asia Cup. After demolishing host Sri Lanka in their tournament opener, the Mohammad Nabi-led side outclassed Bangladesh with a commendable all-round performance yesterday at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Since their Asia Cup debut in 2014, this is the second time that they have grabbed the top four spot. In 2018, Afghanistan finished the campaign in fourth place with India lifting the trophy and Bangladesh becoming the runners-up.

To mark the feat, the Afghanistan Cricket Board shared some glimpses of the victorious celebration from Sharjah on their official Twitter handle. The caption of the post highlights Tuesday night’s “winning moments.” Afghanistan required 128 runs to win and they got the job done in the 18th over itself. Their star batter Najibullah Zadran was on strike and had shouldered the responsibility to take the side home.

Zadran was well-settled at the crease and also in a mood to make the ending more special. He whacked a straight and flat six into the crowd. The entire Afghanistan dressing room burst into emphatic celebrations. The facial expressions of the fans and players showed their happiness at this victory. All-rounder Rashid Khan had the biggest smile on his face.

Fans were left overjoyed on witnessing ACB’s Twitter video. They flooded the comments section with a lot of appreciative messages for the young Afghan brigade. To no surprise, the clip has seen more than 3,000 viewers so far.

A countryman expressed his immense love for the side.

A fan wished luck for Afghanistan’s upcoming challenges and wrote, “Good luck, boys.”

Another person lauded the exceptional team effort by saying, “Well done guys.”

Several users left congratulatory messages for Afghanistan. Check some of them here:

Batting first, Bangladesh put up a mere target of 128 runs in front of Afghanistan. Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman delivered commendable spells and picked up three wickets each. In reply, the Afghan openers failed to stay longer on the pitch. However, the Zadran-pair (Ibrahim and Najibullah) took charge and steered them across the victory line. Ibrahim remained unbeaten at a 41-ball 42. Najibullah, who also remained unbeaten, went hard on Bangladesh bowlers, smashing 43 runs in just 17 deliveries. The Asia Cup Super-4 battles are slated to start from 3 September.

Asia Cup 2022: 'Not everyone is Ravindra Jadeja': Mayanti Langer stuns Sanjay Manjrekar with quick riposte

Anchor Mayanti Langer took a dig at veteran commentator Sanjay Manjrekar during the pre-match show ahead of the Asia Cup match between Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

India and Pakistan’s bowling came under the scanner on Sunday as both sides were forced to bring an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle in the final overs, owing to the ICC’s new rule to counter slow over rate.

While India were 2 overs behind the scheduled time, Pakistan bowled their last three overs with these new field restrictions.

Former cricketers Sanjay Manjrekar and Scott Styris were involved in a discussion on this issue, ahead of the match between Afghanistan and Bangladesh on Tuesday. However, anchor Mayanti Langer stole the show when she took a dig at Sanjay Manjrekar with a Ravindra Jadeja remark.

Speaking on the issue on Star Sports, New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris said, “We have seen that a lot of spinners don’t like to bowl in the death it seems. Even the great Rashid Khan isn’t a big fan of it. Now if you have one less fielder to protect you have to change your entire strategy on the lines he has to bowl in particular. Teams would then have to protect one side of the boundary rather than have fielders on both sides. So those are the adjustments that have to be made and hence they have to get their spinners done a little earlier now.”

Manjrekar chipped in with one line when he said, “One very quick suggestion and a very simple tactic. Just bowl your overs quicker.”

However, this is when Mayanti took a jibe and said, “Sanjay, not everyone is Ravindra Jadeja. I had to do it.”

“See I just got a ‘gone one’ from Sanjay,” added Langer after Manjrekar responded, “good one”.

Ravindra Jadeja is well-known for getting through his overs very quickly and now, when these new rules have started pinching the captains, they would need their bowlers to get through their overs more efficiently.

Hong Kong team comprising student, delivery guys, businessmen make big sacrifices to reach Asia Cup

Private coaching, food delivery, jewellery business, administration, and university graduation – the Hong Kong cricket team is in all sorts of work to earn a livelihood when not playing cricket.

The Hong Kong team will play India in their Asia Cup contest on Wednesday evening at the Dubai International Stadium. This will be the biggest match they will play in the last three months – the period wherein they have been continuously touring or different tournaments or preparatory camps.

They have been travelling for so long that Babar Hayat, Ehsan Khan, and Yasim Murtaza have had their first child but have only seen their newborns over video calls.

“A majority of our squad have to earn a living outside of what they get from Cricket Hong Kong, who have been very supportive despite no cricket for more than two years,” head coach Trent Johnston told ESPN Cricinfo. “But we only have a certain amount of time with the players and have to maximise that.

“There were probably six lockdowns. We didn’t have training for over a year. The boys were doing their strength and conditioning sessions over Zoom, from their homes, car park and local parks. The commitment they’ve shown has been phenomenal. They never questioned anything or complained but have just got on with it,” the former Ireland captain added.

Asia Cup 2022: When and where to watch IND vs HK, live streaming, time in IST, TV Channel

Hong Kong overcame the strong sides of UAE and Kuwait in the Asia Cup qualifiers, even after they failed to make a mark at the T20 World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe in June 2022.

“I’m pleased for the whole group that we put in three good games [against Singapore, Kuwait and UAE] in Oman and now have an opportunity to play India and Pakistan.”

However, the most intriguing aspect is that the players have to work in different fields besides cricket to earn a regular salary.

“Three or four players do private coaching, either at a cricket club or one-on-one coaching,” Johnston said. “A high percentage of the boys are delivery drivers with Food Panda or Deliveroo. Kinchit Shah, the vice-captain, is in the jewellery trade. Scott McKechnie has his own business that offers him slight flexibility to come on out as long as he has internet. Young Ayush [Shukla], our opening bowler, is in university. A couple of guys are doing administration.

“So all of them have sacrificed a lot over the past three months to come over and play cricket. I can’t thank their families enough. The wives and girlfriends, kids that are waiting for their dad to come back. Not one guy in the team has told me they have to go home. Their partners have been phenomenal and kept the house moving, I thank them a hell of a lot.”

Read: Spirited Hong Kong face stern India test in their campaign opener

Several players from the 2018 side that competed India have already left cricket for other professions. A few have also left Hong Kong Cricket for opportunities with other cricket-playing nations. For Instance, then captain Anshuman Rath has moved to the Indian domestic circuit, whereas Mark Chapman has played for New Zealand and currently is in their A squad.

Hong Kong are definitely the dark horse for the Asia Cup. However, the coach suggests that they will cherish playing India and Pakistan and have plans to stage a coup.

“The last three games in Oman, we got the most enjoyment out of it. We missed out in the T20 World Cup qualifiers 2019 in UAE despite having Oman on the racks. Last week [at the qualifiers], against UAE, we were ruthless enough to get the win. To see the smile on their faces after the UAE game, you probably don’t see scenes like that unless you win a World Cup.

“It means a lot to the guys, given the sacrifice they’ve put in. Now to be able to play India and Pakistan, they deserve to be here. We’re not just going to turn up and be the whipping boys. We’re going to try and cause an upset or two while we’re here.”

Asia Cup 2022: Watch Ravindra Jadeja’s cheeky response to journalist asking about Pant’s exclusion from playing XI

Ravindra Jadeja answered a journalist, who asked about Rishabh Pant’s exclusion from the playing XI, in a hilarious manner during a press conference ahead of India’s Asia Cup match against Hong Kong.

India defeated Pakistan to start their Asia Cup campaign on a winning note in a nail-biting thriller. Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya were the key architects of India’s chase as Pakistan bowlers put some serious pressure on the Indian batting line-up.

However, what had caught the attention of experts and fans alike was the exclusion of wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik playing ahead of him.

Ahead of India’s second match against Hong Kong, a journalist asked Ravindra Jadeja about Rishabh Pant’s exclusion, “Rishabh Pant didn’t play in the first match. Was it decided based on team combination or an injury concern?”

Jadeja, to this question, replied in a hilarious manner imitating to be a student unhappy with questions in an exam. “I have no idea about this, it is a question out of my books.”

The journalists ruptured into laughter and the video is also doing rounds of social media.

Watch the video here:

India will face Hong Kong on 31 August in their second match and start as the favourites. However, Hong Kong had competed with India brilliantly in the Asia Cup match between the two sides in 2018. Jadeja said that they are not taking the associate nation lightly.

“Definitely we are going to play with a positive mindset and we are not going to take them lightly because in T20 on a given day anything could happen. So will look to play positive cricket and give our best.”

Asia Cup 2022: Mujeeb Ur Rahman strikes thrice as Afghanistan leave Bangladesh reeling at Sharjah

Bangladesh got their Asia Cup 2022 campaign off to a rocky start after opting to bat against Afghanistan, whose bowling unit continued from where they left off against Sri Lanka.

Off-spinner Mujeeb-ur-Rahman played a part in Afghanistan dismantling the Sri Lankan batting lineup on Saturday and three days later, led their charge in the clash against Bangladesh with a three-wicket haul that left the Tigers reeling at the halfway stage.

Mujeeb struck in each of the three overs that he bowled in the powerplay, collecting the wickets of Mohammad Naim, Anamul Haque and star all-rounder and Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan along the way. He castled both Naim and Shakib with the carrom ball and trapped Anamul leg-before in the fourth over, having to overturn the umpire’s decision after it was initially ruled not out.

Things went from bad to worse for the Bangladeshis after star leg-spinner Rashid Khan was introduced after the powerplay. Khan took just two deliveries to make an impact, trapping wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim LBW with a googly, though like Mujeeb he too had to use one of the available reviews to overturn the umpire’s original decision of not out.

The middle-order pair of Afif Hossain and Mahmudullah somewhat steadied the innings with a 25-run fifth-wicket stand before the former became Khan’s second victim of the evening by getting trapped leg-before for 12. On his way back to the dugout, he ended up burning one of Bangladesh’s available reviews.

Afghanistan earlier got off to a commanding start in the tournament with an eight-wicket thrashing of six-time champions Sri Lanka. Fazalhaq Farooqi led the way for the Afghans with a haul of 3/11 as the Lankans were bundled out for 105. Afghanistan, in reply, chased the target down with eight wickets and nearly 10 overs to spare, thanks mainly to their openers Hazratullah Zazai (37 not out) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (40).

Vinesh Phogat re-establishes her stature as quintessential queen of Indian wrestling

Lucknow: One could sense the excitement in the air at the Sports Authority of India facilities here on Monday when three-time Commonwealth Games champion Vinesh Phogat arrived at the venue earlier than most of her juniors for the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) trials for the World Championships.

The 28-year-old decorated athlete arguably had a point to prove against a 17-year-old Antim Pangal, who gave her senior rival a tough time during the CWG trials back in May.

Vinesh had to use all her experience to clinch the bout by the virtue of picking the last point as the contest ended 3-3. Vinesh’s three points came in the last 15 seconds but wasn’t convincing enough for the stature of the undisputed queen of the 53kg category.

Monday’s bout, in fact, couldn’t have asked for a better plot set up to the climax as both Vinesh and Antim, who became the first Indian girl to win the U-20 Worlds gold medal, reached the trials scripting histories.

However all those doubts were laid to rest at the SAI centre on Monday when a seasoned Vinesh put a daylight between her and Antim with a dominant 7-0 win.

Functioning as a well-oiled machinery with her movements being too quick for her inexperienced opponent to grab, Vinesh showcased why she is the quintessential queen of Indian wrestling.

“It was a satisfying performance from a personal perspective as I felt I have peaked well this season,” said Vinesh after the bout. “If I compare this performance with the last trials, I was in much better shape today while in May the season was just starting for me and getting challenged by a new opponent left me confused.”

Praising a talent like Antim, Vinesh felt it was her years of experience that proved to be decisive against the teenager.

“Just looking at today’s result, it will be wrong to say she is not good. She’s actually a very strong wrestler and today it was my experience that helped me got better off her,” said Vinesh.

How Vinesh prepped for the bout

However, it would be wrong to assume that it was the 2019 World Championship bronze medallist’s sheer experience and intensity got her over the line. Taking the bout seriously, Vinesh did all the homework she could on Antim before the bout.

“Vinesh was very aggressive today and that’s because of the criticism she faced after the last trials,” said WFI women’s chief coach Jitendra Singh. “There was further psychological pressure on her after Antim won the U-20 gold medal and that’s why she never took the preparations lightly. Vinesh watched all the videos of Antim’s bouts this year and studied her moves as her homework.”

The star wrestler showed what it means to be an international wrestler as she gave away no freebies during the two trials she competed in.

Speaking of her performance, Vinesh admitted she has peaked well for the season as she never felt tired after bouts.

“I was personally pleased with my performance because I felt I was recovering well after every bout. Never felt that I am getting tired in between or after the bouts. It shows that I have peaked well for the season,” said Vinesh.

‘CWG wasn’t enough, World is the big prize’

Most of the women’s medallist at the CWG, including Rio Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik, seemed to be content with their success for the year and gave Monday’s trials a miss. Being scheduled right after the CWG didn’t help the case either but Vinesh was determined about her ambitions for the season.

And for someone, who has been for a long seen as arguably the best women’s wrestler in the country, it’s not hard to guess why she took the risk to participate in Monday’s trials. Just one World Championship medal and and alluding Olympic success, can’t be enough for the cousin of the Dangal-famed Phogat sisters.

Vinesh affirmed the same, saying World Championship is the biggest prize of the season.

“Commonwealth Games is important but it was never the biggest prize of the season. And For someone, who has a senior career of 10 years, just one World Championship medal (2019 in Nur Sultan) can’t be satisfying. I have 4-5 years of wrestling left in me and I want to win as many medals at big tournaments as possible in this period so that by the time I leave the sport, I feel satisfied,” said Vinesh.

On this day in 2016: Alex Hales' 171 fires England to record-breaking 444/3

On this day in 2016, England flexed their batting might when they smashed Pakistan to amass a then world-record 444 for the loss of 3 wickets in Trent Bridge in ODI innings. The Eoin Morgan-led side smashed the previous record of 443 for 9 that was set by Sri Lanka against the Netherlands at Amstelveen in 2006.

England’s total of 444/3 remained the highest total in ODIs till 2018 when they themselves broke it by scoring 481/6 against Australia in Nottingham. England once again broke the world record for the highest total in ODIs in 2022 by smashing 498/8 against the Netherlands in Amstelveen.

In 2016, on an absolute batting beauty in Nottingham and under clear skies, England batted first and had an absolute party. The tone was set by their opener Alex Hales who went on to score 171 off 122 balls. It was then the highest score by an England batter in ODI cricket as it beat a 23-year-old record set by Robin Smith, who had scored 167.

England screamed past their previous highest total of 408 for nine that they posted against New Zealand in 2015. Captain Eoin Morgan raced to his half-century off 24 balls and he shared blitzing partnership with Jos Buttler that was worth 161. However, Hales shone brighter than the bright sun as he hit 4 sixes and 22 fours in his 122-ball knock to power England’s efforts.

Jos Buttler did not want to miss out as he went on to flay six sixes and three fours and raced to his half-century and finished 90 not out off 51 balls while Eoin Morgan was unbeaten on 57.

It was a forgettable day in the field for Pakistan as Wahab Riaz recorded the second-worst bowling figures in an ODI. The left-arm pacer conceded 110 runs from 10 overs and was just behind Australia’s Mick Lewis, who had conceded 113 runs off his 10 overs against South Africa during that famous match in Johannesburg back in 2006.

In response, Pakistan were knocked over for 275 as none of their batters got time to settle in. Sharjeel Khan tried his best with a half-century but did not get any support from the other end. Mohammad Amir hit his stride as a batter as he creamed 58 off 28 balls but the task was never within reach for the visitors.

Watch: Shoaib Akhtar slams journalist for referring to Sehwag's 'baap baap hota hain' comment

The India-Pakistan rivalry has brought to us a lot of incidents that cricket enthusiasts can still remember. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the fiery bowling attack of Pakistan, led by Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Shoaib Akhtar, was a nightmare for any batter in the world. But India’s legendary opening pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag knew how to stand strong against them. However, sometimes it led to a few heated exchanges between them. On Sunday, ahead of the Asia Cup match between India and Pakistan, Shoaib Akhtar featured in a pre-match interview session with an Indian journalist. After the journalist asked the former pacer about his popular banter with Sehwag, he evidently got irritated.

Sehwag, during an interview in 2010, said that he made a remark against Akhtar saying “Baap Baap Hota Hain,” after Tendulkar smashed him for a six in one of the ODIs. The remark is still very popular among Indian fans. Till now, whenever these two nations face each other, it comes out. But this time, Akhtar denied that the Indian batter never made any such comment. Akhtar also asserted that he once asked Sehwag about this incident in Bangladesh. According to him, Sehwag also refused it.

The journalist asked Akhtar to recall any banter that he could remember besides the Sehwag one. The Pakistan legend slammed the journalist by saying that she should focus on cricket rather than this kind of “made-up story.” “We should celebrate this occasion and I will make any kind of comment that can create differences between two countries,” he added.

The video of the conversation has landed on Twitter and has been shared by a fan on Twitter. In no time, it grabbed the attention of fans from both countries. Since being shared, the clip has received more than 2.5 lakh views so far.

Fans also expressed their discontent over the matter in the comment section. They enlightened the fact that this kind of provocation can only bring out the dirty side of this biggest Asian rivalry. A user agreed to Akhtar’s words and wrote, “Well. The dose is enough.” Another person praised the Rawalpindi Express by saying, “Shoaib Akhtar always makes sense.”

When India and Pakistan face each other in any tournament, it always becomes a thrilling contest. Not just fans, but cricketers also feel the pressure.

India kickstarted their Asia Cup journey with a gripping 5-wicket win against Pakistan on Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium. However, the victory did not come easily for the Men in Blue.

There were the ups and downs throughout the match. Indian bowlers delivered an outstanding performance and managed to restrict Pakistan to 147 runs on the board. Though it was looking like an easy chase for the Rohit Sharma-led unit, spirited performances from debutant Naseem Shah and Mohammad Nawaz made life quite difficult for them.

The game turned out to be a nail-biter at the final stage. Some economical overs reignited Pakistan’s hopes. All eyes were on Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya as most of the big names were back in the hut.

With just three overs left in the innings, India were still 32 runs behind the target. It was Naseem once again who successfully appealed for an lbw in the fourth ball of the 18th over against Jadeja in what was a massive blow for the Men in Blue.

However, Jadeja was quite confident and asked for a review straightaway.

After some judgment by the third umpire, it was seen that the delivery had pitched outside the leg stump, resulting in the on-field umpire changing his decision.

The respite was evident on the faces of the Indian fans and players, including Virat Kohli, the main man behind the build-up at the initial phase who was following the game from the dugout.

After the decision of Jadeja’s dismissal got overruled, the former India skipper wore a relieved expression and mouthed the words “bach gaya” with a sigh of relief. The moment grabbed eyeballs and a snippet of it has been doing rounds on social media.

Explained: The slow over-rate penalty that forced India and Pakistan to make fielding changes

It was Kohli’s 100th T20 International on Sunday, becoming only the second cricketer after Ross Taylor to complete 100 appearances across formats in international cricket.

Amid the controversies regarding his form, he played a fighting innings of 35 off 34 balls. However, the urgency to play a big shot against in-form spinner Mohammad Nawaz cut his innings short.

Despite a wobble in the top order, Jadeja and Pandya steadied the Indian innings and put India in the ascendancy. The Rohit Sharma-led side won the match by five wickets and two balls to spare.

On This Day in 2010: Pakistan spot-fixing scandal rocks cricketing world, casts shadow over the sport

On this day back in 2010, the game of cricket faced perhaps its darkest days when the murky world of spot-fixing took centre stage in the sport. This took place during the Lord’s Test match between England and Pakistan when a British tabloid ran a stunning sting operation.

This Test match came at the centre of a police investigation for spot-fixing allegations, when 35-year-old Mazhar Majeed was arrested. He was a sporting agent who was nabbed by the police and he allegedly claimed to have bribed a couple of Pakistani cricketers to deliberately bowl no-balls on demand during the Test match.

As per reports, Majeed accepted £150,000 and arranged a spot-fix that involved Pakistan bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif. The reports went on to suggest that both these bowlers would bowl no-balls at pre-decided moments during the fixture.

It also alleged that the then-Pakistan captain Salman Butt and wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal, along with three unnamed players, were also part of the scandal. The report also ran a video recording that showed Majeed predicting the kind of delivery Amir would deliver in the first over of England’s innings.

It needs to be mentioned here that Kamran Akmal and the other unnamed players were cleared of having played any role in the spot-fixing episode.

Following the report, the International Cricket Council (ICC) jumped into action and formed a tribunal that included its anti-corruption unit and Scotland Yard. The joint investigation announced a 10-year ban on Salman Butt (with five years as suspended sentence); seven years for Asif (with two years suspended) and a five-year ban for Amir from featuring in any form of cricket.

Amir made a comeback to international cricket in 2016 and featured in his comeback Test at the same venue – Lord’s. He has since carved out a decent career for himself. However, both Salman Butt and  Mohammad Asif have not made any comeback and have since bid goodbye to the game.

India vs Pakistan: Rishabh Pant memes flood Twitter after Urvashi Rautela attends Asia Cup clash

India pulled off a dominant start to their Asia Cup journey as they outclassed their eternal rival Pakistan in the opening match on Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium.

Pakistan’s fiery bowling attack made it a bit difficult for the Rohit Sharma-led side. However, the commendable 52-run partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya helped them survive the nail-biter.

Along with the fans of both countries, some glittering names from the film industries were also present in the stands to witness the blockbuster clash. Apart from the Liger star, Vijay Deverakonda, Urvashi Rautela, decking up in a bright red dress and a purple coat was also caught on camera while waving the tri-colour.

As Rautela’s name has been doing rounds on social media after her controversial exchange with Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, her presence triggered the gossip again. Notably, Pant was dropped from India’s starting eleven in the favour of Dinesh Karthik. The veteran cricketer delivered a good performance behind the stumps by taking a couple of crucial catches but did not get enough time with the bat.

Coming to the point, not only the Bollywood actress but Pant was also captured several times from the Indian dugout. The controversy between this duo was initiated after the Hate Story 4 actress said that an ‘RP’ from Delhi Capitals was waiting for her at the hotel lobby and called her several times to meet.

Following that comment, Pant shared a tweet on his personal account calling Rautela ‘Didi.’ However, he immediately deleted it. The Indian batter and the B-town actress were rumoured to be dating for quite some time before the gossip landed. At that time, Twitter was also flooded with sarcastic and hilarious posts from fans. Following the previous controversy, a plethora of memes about this duo again surfaced on the internet.

A user uploaded a still from the Bollywood movie Fukrey to present yesterday’s scenario at the stadium:

Another one shared some scenes from a movie by Vijay Deverakonda to mark the reaction of Pant.

A person sarcastically said, “Urvashi Rautela is in the stadium to recreate the ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ ending scene with Rishabh Pant.”

Here are some other memes:

Asia Cup 2022: Afghanistan cricket fan ‘kisses’ Hardik Pandya on TV screen to celebrate India’s victory over Pakistan

New Delhi: Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya on Sunday dished out an all-round effort, first returning with figures of 3 for 25 and then playing a 17-ball unbeaten 33-run knock to guide India to a five-wicket win over Pakistan in their Asia Cup 2022.

While everyone showered praises on Pandya for his all-round performance, the video of a fan from Afghanistan has gone viral over social media.

In the video, the fan can be seen celebrating India’s win by ‘kissing’ Hardik Pandya on his television screen.

“Happy to get this win because it was very important for us. Our nerves were checked, as a team we were challenged as well. Loved the way he (Ravindra Jadeja) came out and played as well,” Hardik said in video posted by BCCI.

“I was recollecting everything from being carried on the stretcher and the same dressing room. You feel a sense of achievement after all the things happened and again getting an opportunity today,” he added.

Watch: Hardik Pandya recalls injury-forced exit in 2018 Asia Cup, talks about ‘sense of achievement’ four years later

Hardik Pandya’s all-round show helped Team India get their Asia Cup victory off to a victorious start with a five-wicket win over Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday.

Not only did it help the Men in Blue pull one back against their arch-rivals after getting thrashed by the same team at the same venue in the T20 World Cup last year, it was also a comeback of sorts for Pandya, who suffered an ignominious injury-forced exit from the 2018 Asia Cup during a match against Pakistan, also in Dubai.

Read: Nonchalant Hardik Pandya shines brightest amid a galaxy of stars

Pandya collected three crucial wickets while giving away just 25 runs to help restrict Babar Azam’s team to under 150. He later starred with the bat, coming in at a time when India had lost their fourth wicket and the game could have gone either way. In the end, Pandya took the game deep, taking the odd risk along the way, and finished off in style in a calm and composed manner to remind everyone of his match-finishing credentials.

In a chat with Ravindra Jadeja, with whom he shared a crucial 52-run stand for the fifth wicket that got the Indians within touching distance of the target, Pandya reminisced the injury that he had suffered at the same venue four years ago and how his performance on Sunday was a redemption of sorts.

“I remembered everything. I was being taken off the field in a stretcher, it was the very same dressing room. I feel a sense of achievement, to look back at everything that has happened and then come out and perform the way I did today. Journey has been a beautiful one,” Pandya told fellow all-rounder Jadeja in a chat shared by the BCCI on their social media accounts.

Pandya also spoke about facing the last over, which was bowled by left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz with India needing seven to win off six balls. Jadeja was clean bowled off the very first delivery, but new batter Dinesh Karthik brought Pandya back on strike right away with a single off his very first ball. Pandya then clobbered a flat delivery from Nawaz over long on to finish the game with two balls to spare, remaining unbeaten on 33 off 17 balls.

“Seven runs didn’t appear too big to me, given the final over was being bowled by a left-arm spinner. Plus I didn’t really care about the five fielders (being inside the circle). Even if they had 10 fielders manning the boundary, I’d still have whacked the ball,” Pandya told Jadeja.

Watch: Virat Kohli hugs Wasim Akram ahead of IND vs PAK clash; heartwarming frame earns praise

Former India skipper Virat Kohli, who has been struggling to find his form for some time, battled hard during India’s first Asia Cup match against their arch-rivals Pakistan. While chasing 148 runs, Kohli made a notable contribution with the bat by adding a crucial 35 runs to the score sheet. The match was also a memorable one for the star batter as he completed 100 T20 International matches for India.

Kohli became the second cricketer in the world to play 100-plus matches in all formats after New Zealand legend Ross Taylor.

There were several former players present at the Dubai International Stadium to watch the much-anticipated clash between the two Asian rivals. From India, former bowler Irfan Pathan, and 2011 World Cup hero Gautam Gambhir were spotted in the commentary box. Some glittering names from Pakistan cricket were also seen in the stands. Legendary Pakistani pacer Wasim Akram spent some time in front of the camera at the pre-match analysis with Irfan Pathan.

Before the match, Akram took his time to wish Kohli luck. The television camera caught him sharing a laugh with Kohli and hugging him. Minutes before the start of the contest, the special moment of friendship between them caught the fans’ attention. Irfan Pathan also came forward to congratulate Kohli for his 100th T20I appearance. The frame went viral in no time and numerous admirable posts hit Twitter.

The video of the meeting earned a lot of plaudits.

One fan shared a couple of photographs and wrote, “Virat Kohli hugged Wasim Akram and Irfan Pathan during training.”

A Kohli fan shared his love for the duo and posted a picture of them.

A Pakistani fan also got excited after watching the beautiful moment.

Others also celebrated the moment on Twitter.

After the early wicket of KL Rahul, Kohli along with skipper Rohit Sharma displayed good composure to build the foundation. However, the duo failed to stay longer on the crease and got dismissed following poor shot selections. Then, Ravindra Jadeja and Suryakumar Yadav tried to bring some momentum but Yadav left after scoring just 18 runs. Jadeja was glued to the crease and steered the innings by joining hands with Hardik Pandya. The duo played exceptionally well and helped the side to secure a 5-wicket victory in the end.

Asia Cup 2022: Pakistan not same without Shaheen Afridi, India can win despite losing toss, says Aakash Chopra

Team India will begin their title defence in Asia Cup 2022 with the much-anticipated clash against Pakistan in Dubai today. Emotions will be running high for both sides this time. India will be looking forward to starting off their title defence with a bang and avenging their loss during the last meeting at ICC T20 World Cup 2021. On the other hand, Pakistan will be aiming to down Team India once again and carry on with the momentum they have had over India since their last outing.

Meanwhile, former India opener Aakash Chopra believes that Pakistan’s bowling attack is not much lethal without Shaheen Afridi, who was ruled out of the Asia Cup last week after the pacer had suffered a right knee ligament injury while fielding during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle last month.

Chopra also said that Team India can beat the Babar Azam-led side even after losing the toss in Dubai.

“The pitch at Dubai has a lot of grass and help for the pacers. The absence of Shaheen Afridi has pushed back Pakistan quite significantly. They say that it’s ‘win the toss, win the match’ in Dubai but I feel that India can beat Pakistan even after losing the toss as their bowling isn’t the same without Shaheen,” Aakash Chopra Kooed.

Notably, Mohammad Hasnain has replaced Shaheen Afridi in Pakistan’s 15-member squad for the tournament.

Meanwhile, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma said that what the team needs to achieve as a group is more important than the opposition.

“First game on 28th. We will try to be in present. Preparation-wise, we will not be short. We are not looking at the opposition at all. What we need to achieve as a group is more important than the opposition. We have to think of this as our just another opposition who we want to beat and do well against. It is going to be challenging no doubt. We will have to be up for it,” said Rohit in a video posted by BCCI which also featured other members of Team India in it.

Virat Kohli also said that as a player, it is like any other game for him.

“Of course the environment outside can pull you in. But it is for you to enjoy and get excited about till the time you get into the park. Then, it is usual business for you,” he added.
So far, both sides have locked horns on nine occasions in T20I matches. India has an edge overall, with wins in seven matches out of these. Pakistan has won only two.

But the last time these two met was during the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 back in October last year, in which India suffered a humiliating ten-wicket defeat. Left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi destroyed the Indian top order with two quick strikes. Contributions from then-skipper Virat Kohli (57) and Rishabh Pant (39) took India to 151/7 in their 20 overs, but knocks from Mohammed Rizwan (79*) and Pakistani skipper Babar Azam (68*) meant that Men in Blue succumbed to a shocking defeat.

India will be looking forward to putting up a big fight this time around. They have been in fantastic form as of late, having defeated England and West Indies in their respective territories in ODI and T20I series. They are also the number one side in T20Is.

Coming to Pakistan, they are the third-ranked side in ICC T20I rankings and are not to be taken lightly.

Squads:

India: Rohit Sharma (captain), KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Deepak Hooda, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Bishnoi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan

Pakistan: Babar Azam (c), Shadab Khan, Asif Ali, Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, Haris Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Hasan Ali, Naseem Shah, Shahnawaz Dahani, Usman Qadir, Mohammad Hasnain.

Asia Cup 2022: Waqar Younis clarifies his controversial 'Big relief for India' statement on Shaheen Afridi’s injury

Pakistan pace sensation Shaheen Shah Afridi was ruled out of the 2022 Asia Cup last week after the pacer had suffered a right knee ligament injury while fielding during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle last month.

The news came as a big setback for the Babar Azam-led side as Shaheen played a big role in Pakistan’s massive win against India at the T20 World Cup 2021. The fast bowler had accounted for the wickets of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli as India lost by 10 wickets to Pakistan in the marquee tournament. It was also the first time India lost to Pakistan in a World Cup match.

Meanwhile, reflecting on Shaheen’s injury, former Pakistan pacer Waqar Younis had tweeted that Shaheen’s absence will be a huge relief for India batters in Asia Cup.

“Shaheen’s injury Big relief for the Indian top order batsmen. Sad we won’t be seeing him in #AsiaCup2022 Get fit soon Champ @iShaheenAfridi,” he posted.

But his tweet did not go down well with the Indian fans who slammed the former Pakistan captain for making an immature comment, arguing that Indians have now chalked out a plan for Shaheen.

Now, Waqar has cleared the air on his controversial statement and said that he was only praising Shaheen and didn’t mean to belittle India batters’ skills.

“Shaheen ki absence ek big relief toh hai saare openers ke liye. Indians ka maine bas thoda masala… but ye bhi mohabbat nai, aisa nahi hai ke koi dushmani hai. (Shaheen’s absence is a big relief to all openers but I tweeted about Indians just to spice it up. It’s just banter and I don’t have any hatred towards anyone)” Younis told sports journalist Vimal Kumar in an interaction hosted by OneCricket.

“I can point out some technical issues as well. If you look at the history, Indian openers in World Cup or Champions Trophy struggle against left-arm pacers who bring the ball back into right-handers. A left-arm fast bowler who gets the ball to move in will trouble anyone, not just Indians. Any batter would not like the ball coming in towards the stumps. As a bowler, I always advise hitting the top of those three stumps. Shaheen’s delivery comes in nicely from a good height… that is a big problem for the openers,” he added.

Notably, Mohammad Hasnain has replaced Shaheen Afridi in Pakistan’s 15-member squad for the T20 Asia Cup 2022.

Pakistan’s squad for Asia Cup: Babar Azam (c), Shadab Khan, Asif Ali, Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, Haris Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Hasan Ali, Naseem Shah, Shahnawaz Dahani, Usman Qadir, Mohammad Hasnain.

Watch: AB de Villers' special message for Virat Kohli ahead of Indian cricketer's 100th T20I

Virat Kohli is set to play his 100th T20I on Sunday as India get ready to take on arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022 campaign opener at the Dubai International Cricket stadium. Ahead of the momentous occasion, Kohli’s former Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate and close friend, AB de Villiers shared a special message for the Indian cricketer.

“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate my very good friend Virat Kohli on becoming the first Indian cricket player to play a 100 matches across all three formats. What an amazing achievement Virat! We are all very proud of you and all the very best in your 100th T20 International game. Will be watching you,” the South African legend said in a video uploaded by Star Sports’ official Twitter handle.

India vs Pakistan Asia Cup: When and where to watch IND vs PAK clash?

Kohli will become the second Indian men’s cricketer after Rohit Sharma to play 100 T20I matches if he gets picked in the side for the Pakistan match. Rohit has played 132 matches so far. Kohli is also set to become the first Indian to play 100 matches across all three formats. He has played 102 Tests and 262 ODIs.

Besides the potential record, all eyes will also be fixed on how Kohli does with the bat on his return to the international circuit. Kohli, who last scored a century in 2019, was rested from tours of the West Indies and Zimbabwe after his struggle with form. He last played for India in England in June where his highest score was 20 in five matches across formats. The star batter also had a quiet IPL 2022, scoring just 341 runs from 16 matches at an average of 22.73.

Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni: A binary star system broken after MSD’s retirement

Kohli, in a recent interview, opened up on how the loss of form has impacted him and how he didn’t touch the bat in his time away from the game.

“For the first time in 10 years, I didn’t touch my bat for a month. I came to realisation that I was trying to fake my intensity a bit recently,” Kohli said. “I was convincing myself that no, you had the intensity. But your body was telling you to stop. The mind was telling me to take a break and step back.”

Now, after a well-deserved break, Kohli will look to get back his scoring touch in the high-profile game against Pakistan which is destined to be a historic one for him in any case.

Watch: Babar Azam implores Pakistan to seek inspiration from World Cup victory over India ahead of Asia Cup showdown

Ahead of the marquee clash against India in the Asia Cup, Pakistan captain Babar Azam has urged his team to take inspiration from their dominant victory over their arch-rivals in the T20 World Cup last year.

The tournament is already underway with Afghanistan thumping Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the opening game in Dubai on Saturday. All eyes however, will be on the Indo-Pak clash that takes place on Sunday with the two teams set to meet after nearly a year in what promises to be a blockbuster of a clash.

Babar, who currently leads the Pakistanis across formats, addressed the team during their final practice session ahead of their group stage clash against the Men in Blue that takes place on Sunday evening (7.30 pm IST).

India vs Pakistan: Asia Cup 2022, a sideshow to the real drama

Kis body language se khelna hai, jaise hum khelte aa rahe hain, jaise humne World Cup mein khela hai. Woh yaad karo, piche jaake woh cheez yaad karo. Jab yaad karoge, saari cheezein aana shuru ho jayengi. (What our body language should be like, how we’ve been playing all along, how we played in the World Cup. Remember how we played in the World Cup. Things will start falling in place once you take inspiration from them)

Belief rakho. I know humara main fast bowler humare saath nahi hai, lekin uski kami mehsoos na hone dena, fast bowlers specially. (Believe in yourselves. I know we’re missing out main fast bowler, but ensure we’re able to make up for his absence with our performances),” Babar told his teammates in a video shared by the Pakistan Cricket Board on their Twitter account.

‘It is a high-pressure game’: India players react to match against Pakistan in Asia Cup 2022

The Men in Green have been dealt a blow in the form of a couple of injury-forced pullouts ahead of the tournament, with pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi (knee injury) and Mohammad Wasim (left side strain) getting ruled out of the tournament due to fitness issues, with Mohammad Hasnain and Hasan Ali named as their replacements.

‘You'll get to know tomorrow…’: Rohit gives cheeky reply to Pakistani journalist ahead of IND vs PAK Asia Cup clash

India skipper Rohit Sharma hasn’t shied away from experimenting with various combinations in the team, and ahead of their 2022 Asia Cup opening game against Pakistan, he made it clear that the quest to find ”new answers” will continue, even if there are obstacles along the away.

Notably, India have tried out Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Rishabh Pant as openers in recent times, while KL Rahul, who recently played the ODI series against Zimbabwe after returning from injury, is likely to open in the multi-nation tournament.

Meanwhile, during the pre-match conference, a Pakistani journalist asked Rohit about India’s opening pair ahead to which the ‘Hitman’ gave a cheeky answer.

Here’s the conversation between the two that took place on Saturday:

Pakistani journalist: “Pichle kuch series mein India ne naye naye combinations try kie hai. Kabhi Pant aa rahe hai, kabhi Suryakumar Yadav aa rahe hai. Wo sirf isilie tha kyuki KL Rahul nahi the. AB jab wo wapas aa gaye hai toh apne jagah pe wahi ayenge ya kal aapke saath koi naya opening partner dekhne ko milega? (In the last few series we saw India experiment a lot with their opening pair. Sometimes it was Pant, sometimes it was Suryakumar Yadav but it was mainly because of KL Rahul’s absence but now that he is back will he get his spot back straightaway?”

Rohit Sharma: “Aap dekh lijie kal toss k baad kaun ayega. Thoda toh secret humko bhi rakhne do yaar. (You will get to see after toss tomorrow. Let us keep some secrets at least). We have decided to try new things. Some will work, some won’t. There’s no harm in trying. You won’t get answers if you don’t try. Whenever we get opportunities, we try new things. As far as the combination is concerned, you’ll get to know tomorrow only but we, as a team, have decided to keep trying new things. We’ve got a lot of answers in the last six-eight months and that has happened only because we have tried new things.”

Also, there was an obvious reference to how out-of-form Virat Kohli is shaping up, and the skipper, as usual, backed his No. 1 batter.

”As far as I am concerned, I found him in absolutely good touch. He is back after a month-long break, and I didn’t see him doing anything extraordinarily different,” Rohit said.

India were humiliated in the last T20 World Cup by 10 wickets and while the loss against Pakistan hurts, they have moved on, said Rohit.

”Look, the mood in camp is buzzing. It is a fresh tournament. New start. No point thinking about that loss.

”We need not think about what happened in the past. We also want to move in forward direction. It is always challenging to play Pakistan but what is important for us is what we want to achieve together than thinking about the opposition,” he said.
