23:47 (IST)

Hello and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the FIFA World Cup Group C matches on matchday three of the group stage. Two matches are on the cards, with Argentina taking on Poland with sights on victory, which is crucial for them to advance for the knockouts. Saudi Arabia face Mexico in the other match, with both games kicking off simultaneously (10 pm local time in Qatar, 12.30 am IST).

Preview: Lionel Messi has already come to Argentina’s rescue at the World Cup. He might just have to do it all over again.

Another emotionally charged evening awaits Messi and the soccer-mad South American nation that worships him when Argentina meets Poland on Wednesday for a match with so much on the line.

For Messi, who is playing in likely his last World Cup. For Poland striker Robert Lewandowski, who might also be too old when soccer’s biggest tournament rolls around next in 2026.

And for the World Cup as a whole. Because who really doesn’t want to see Messi — one of the game’s greatest ever players — in the late stages of a tournament that is heating up so nicely.

There are multiple scenarios at play for the Group C finale. A win for the Argentines and they are sure to advance, likely as the group winners. A draw, and they can either finish in second place behind Poland or be squeezed out by either Saudi Arabia or Mexico, who are playing in a match taking place concurrently.

A loss? Well, that just doesn’t bear thinking about for anyone associated with Argentina. The team wouldn’t just be eliminated but humiliated. Messi might never be seen in the Albiceleste’s sky blue-and-white jersey again.

That scenario is too much for Argentina fans to take. It’s why tears were shed on the field, among the technical staff and among the fanbase after Messi scored the crucial second-half goal to set Argentina on its way to a 2-0 win over Mexico on Saturday.

That victory meant Argentina bounced back from its shocking 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia in its opening match and now has a fighting chance to avoiding a first group-stage exit since 2002.

In the Group C’s other game that will take place simultaneously, Saudi Arabia face Mexico. Mexico have only earned one point from two games, and will need to beat Saudi Arabia, and hope Poland beat Argentina in order to have any hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.

FIFA World Cup Live Group D updates:

Hello and welcome to the live blog of the FIFA World Cup 2022 group stage games between Tunisia and France, and Australia and Denmark.

The FIFA World Cup Group D competition will come to an end on Wednesday evening with two simultaneous games kicking off at 8:30 PM IST, as France face Tunisia and Australia clash with Denmark to confirm a place in the last 16.

Tunisia need to defeat France if they aim to stay alive in the tournament as a loss or even a draw will knock them out of the competition. However, even if they beat high-flying France, the Eagles of Carthage will have to rely on the result of a simultaneously played Group D game between Australia and Denmark to go their way.

On the other hand, defending champions France have already secured qualification to the round of 16 with the wins against Australia and Denmark, and Les Bleus only need a draw to guarantee first place in Group D.

In the meantime, Australia will be locking horns with Denmark. It’s a must-win tie for both teams as either of them can move to the next round with a win if Tunisia fail to stun France.

Australia are at the second position right now with three points, while Denmark have only one point and are third in the tally.

If both team play out a draw and Tunisia win their clash then it will come down to goal difference between Australia and Tunisia while Denmark will be knocked out.

‘More Asian wickets is more practical World Cup journey’, says Shikhar Dhawan as India look forward to Bangladesh

India stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan elaborated on the team’s learnings from the rain-marred ODI series against New Zealand.

The third match was called off after 18 overs in the second innings. New Zealand had scored 104 /1 in response to India’s 219.

New Zealand won the three-match series 1-0 as rain washed out two matches on either side of the Blackcaps’ victory.

Dhawan, however, was optimistic and said that the team will look forward to the series against Bangladesh.

The southpaw, speaking at the post-match presentations, said that more matches in Asian conditions will help the team prepare better for the 2023 World Cup.

“Absolutely, going to Bangladesh, hopefully, the weather will be better there. We are a young unit. The bowling unit learnt about bowling in the good length area. We were short at times. All the seniors are going to be back in the side.

“More Asian wickets is a more practical journey to the World Cup for us. Important to get the small things right – right lengths for the bowlers, batting close to the body in these conditions for the batters… these are the learnings.”

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson as well was optimistic and said that there was some good stuff in rained-off games too.

“When we have been playing cricket we have been applying ourselves. Some good stuff in the rained-off games too. We knew that 20 overs would constitute a match, but we could see the weather coming, it has been following us. Daryl has been hanging out for a bowl for ages. Milne felt a niggle but didn’t want to stop.”

The Kiwis will next be seen in action in a Test series against Pakistan, starting at the end of the year. Williamson said that his team will regroup as a Test unit after a break.

“Focus changes to the Test arena. Guys get a break now and that’s important too. Been pretty busy. We will regroup as a Test team after the break.”

IPL 2023 auction: Delhi Capitals to buy Cameron Green? Ricky Ponting drops big hint - Watch

Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting on Wednesday revealed that the franchise aims to buy Australia’s all-rounder Cameron Green at the upcoming IPL 2023 auction and they have set aside a “fair bit of money” for the same.

The IPL 2023 mini-auction is to be held in Kochi on December 23 and it is expected that many franchises will go after Green and place high bids for him because of his all-round abilities and the fact that the 23-year-old has plenty of cricket to offer at the highest level.

Moreover, being the pace-bowling all-rounder, who is always in demand, makes Green a hot property in the upcoming IPL auction and Delhi Capitals doesn’t want to let go of the opportunity to sign him as revealed by the Ponting during the first day of the opening Test between Australia and West Indies.

During an interaction with Australian coach Andrew McDonald, Ponting queried about how much it will cost for Delhi Capitals to sign Cameron Green while adding that they have freed a lot of their purse for the same.

“I am really interested to have an IPL conversation with you about Cam Green because I have freed up a fair bit of money at the Delhi Capitals this year,” Ponting told McDonald.

Notably, Delhi Capitals released four players and traded Shardul Thakur in exchange for Aman Khan from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the IPL 2023 auction. They now have a total of INR 24.45 crores to spend in the auction.

Watch: Iranians celebrate football team's loss at FIFA World Cup

Tehran: The Iran national football team’s defeat to the US in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 triggered unusual celebrations in parts of Iran where people came out on streets to celebrate and even waved the American flag. The comes amid the ongoing nationwide anti-hijab protests in Iran.

In multiple videos going viral on social media, locals in Iran can be seen celebrating the loss of their national football team against the US.

Protests in Iran

Iranian security forces have killed at least 448 people in a crackdown on protests that began in mid-September, over half in ethnic minority regions, a rights group said on Tuesday.

Of the 448 people confirmed to have been killed, 60 were children aged under 18, including nine girls, and 29 women, the Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) group said.

It said 16 people were killed by security forces in the past week alone, of whom 12 were slain in Kurdish-populated areas where protests have been particularly intense. The toll has also risen after the deaths of people killed in previous weeks were verified and included, it added. The toll only includes citizens killed in the crackdown and not members of the security forces.

The protests erupted after the September 16 death of Kurdish Iranian Mahsa Amini who had been arrested by the Tehran morality police and have become the biggest challenge to the regime since the 1979 revolution.

19:53 (IST)

FIFA World Cup Live Group A Live Scores:

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the FIFA World Cup day 10 as Group A will play their last league stage games and the two slots in the Round of 16 will be confirmed. Two interesting matches are awaited to start -

Netherlands vs Qatar at the Al Bayt Stadium

Ecuador vs Senegal at the Khalifa International Stadium

Group B competition will come to an end on Tuesday evening with two simultaneous games kicking off at 8:30 PM IST, as the Netherlands face host Qatar and Ecuador clash with Senegal to confirm a place in the last 16.

The Netherlands will start their match against Qatar as the favourites, and are expected to make a smooth move to the knockout stage, whereas the other match involving Ecuador and Senegal is expected to raise tensions with a clash of two equal sides.

Ecuador sit a point ahead of Senegal on the points table, having drawn their game against the Netherlands, but will have to win the match or end it in a draw to advance to the next round.  Senegal have no option but to beat Ecuador to stay alive in the competition.

An exciting prospect awaits as Ecuador will top the group if they finish with a better goal difference than the Netherlands. If this happens, the Netherlands are expected to face England in the Round of 16, eliminating one of the high-profile teams quite prematurely.

'Brother, my English is finished now': Naseem Shah's hilarious response in press conference

Pakistan pacer Naseem Shah is carrying the legacy of fast bowling that his country is known for. The 19-year-old is looking forward to playing the historic Test series against England on home soil. The Three Lions have travelled to Pakistan after 17 years for red-ball cricket. Ahead of the first game of the three-match series, Shah discussed the upcoming fixture during a press conference. He seemed quite excited to perform in front of veteran pacer James Anderson and termed the English bowler “a legend.”

While being asked about the reason behind Anderson’s long cricketing career, Shah showered immense praise on his dedication towards the game. The 40-year-old quick is going to appear in his 176th Test in Rawalpindi on 1 December. According to the youngster, it was only “hard work” that helped him come a long way.

Shah explained, “Being a fast bowler, I know how difficult it is, so it is a massive achievement. He is a legend, and we can gain a lot from him. Whenever we meet, we talk about this. You can only guess how much effort he is putting in since he is still playing at the age of 40.”

The reporter further probed the topic by asking Shah’s view on the “pace vs skill” debate stating that Anderson still has the skills, even though his speed has decreased. Cutting short the question, the cricketer came up with a hilarious reply, “Brother, I only have 30 percent English. My English is done now.”

However, he turned back to the topic and noted that Anderson’s long career has helped him gain a great understanding of the game. “I told you, he’s the legend. He knows everything. He knows how to take wickets because he has played cricket everywhere in the world. That’s why he’s one of the best bowlers in the world,” the Pakistan prodigy further added.

At this age, Naseem Shah has already featured in 13 Tests and has fetched a total of 33 scalps. He earned his maiden Test call-up back in 2019 in Australia despite featuring in just five first-class games. His exceptional display of pace and swing during the T20 World Cup in Australia earned him much popularity. However, he only managed to pick up three wickets in Pakistan’s run till the final.

Ramiz Raja fielded at slips 'because his father was a commissioner': Wasim Akram

Former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram has often been in the news, be it for dismantling the opposition with his fiery deliveries or for his views on the current Men in Green. Now, the speedster has once again made headlines, this time for the startling revelations in his autobiography Sultan: A Memoir.

The left-arm pacer’s book, which was released earlier this month, includes some explosive claims about Akram’s former teammate and current Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja. According to Akram, Ramiz Raja fielded in the slips only due to the “rank” system. The Sultan of Swing, as Akram is fondly called, also lambasted his teammate’s fielding skills.

Ramiz Raja and Wasim Akram were part of Imran Khan’s 1992 World Cup-winning unit and played together for over a decade.

Describing his fielding skills in a Test against New Zealand, Akram wrote, “The first over the next day was delivered by Asif Faridi, a local quick; I was thrown the new ball for the second. I was in my fourth over when John Wright, New Zealand’s captain, nicked to Ramiz at second slip. For all his batting kill, Ramiz was at slip for reasons of rank, because his father was a commissioner and because he’d attended Aitchison College – he dropped more than he caught, frankly.”

This is not the only shocking disclosure made by Akram in his. In his autobiography, the left-arm pacer had also slammed the attitude of former Pakistan captain Saleem Malik during their careers. Akram revealed that Malik used to treat him “like a servant” and made him clean his boots and clothes.

“He would take advantage of my junior status. He was negative, selfish and treated me like a servant. He demanded I massage him, he ordered me to clean his clothes and boots,” Akram alleged about Saleem Malik.

Malik has responded to the claims and added that he was trying to contact Akram to find out why he had written such negative things about him. “If I was narrow minded, I would not have given him the chance to bowl. I will ask him why he wrote such remarks about me,” Malik stated.

India vs New Zealand 3rd ODI weather update: Rain likely to play spoilsport again at Hagley Oval in Christchurch

Team India would aim to finish the ODI series against New Zealand on an even keel when both teams lock horns in the third and final ODI of the series on Wednesday in Christchurch. However, the rain gods are showing no respite to fans as after the second ODI got abandoned in Hamilton, there is a very high chance that the final match of the series will also face the same fate.

Notably, out of five white-ball games that also include three-match T20I series, two matches (one T20I and one ODI) didn’t yield any result and one game (T20I) was curtailed significantly and ended in a tie due to Duckworth-Lewis method.

Once again, there’s bad news for cricket fans as the third ODI is expected to be marred by rain. As per AccuWeather, there is an 88 percent possibility of precipitation and a 16 percent possibility of thunderstorms on Wednesday.

As per New Zealand’s MetService, Christchurch weather will be gloomy on Wednesday. There are high chances of showers in the later part of the day and the temperature is expected to drop to below 10 degrees Celsius.

“High cloud, then showers developing from afternoon, possibly heavy. Westerlies turning fresh southerly in the afternoon, strong about Banks Peninsula,” the MET department predicted for Wednesday.

It is worth noting that a minimum of 20 over will need to be completed between the two sides for it to officially constitute an ODI match.

Earlier, India’s young pace sensation Arshdeep Singh said that the teams cannot control the weather.

“The weather is not in our hands, weather is something we cannot control. So it is important that we give our best whenever we get a chance. If there is a break in the game due to rain, we have to always be mentally and physically prepared for the match to start anytime. It is our endeavour that the process is followed properly and there is no shortage of preparation. And the plans that are made should be executed in the match,” Arshdeep Singh said in a pre-match press conference.

Squads:

India: Shikhar Dhawan (c), Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (vc and wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Deepak Chahar, Umran Malik.

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (c), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway (wk), Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Tom Latham (wk), Daryl Mitchell, Adam Milne, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Henry Nicholls.

BCCI Sets The Bar: Base Price For Women’s IPL Franchise Will be Rs 400 Crore

The BCCI, looking to auction five franchises for the upcoming women’s T20 league starting March 2023 by way of a closed tender, has kept the base price at Rs 400 crore (USD 50m approx.).

The cricket board has arrived at this decision by taking into account the value of the costliest franchise that was sold back in 2007-08 – Mumbai Indians at USD 111.9m (approx. Rs 446 cr) at Rs 40 / dollar.

“The benchmark had to be set somewhere and the BCCI had been gathering a bit of market intelligence on this, keeping in mind the demand and market interest,” those in the know of developments say.

The Board expects the franchise to be sold between Rs 1000 and Rs 1500 crore, or even more, depending on the kind of interest the auction generates once the tender document is out. However, nobody is ready yet to speak about these expectations on record.

“The winning franchise will pay the ownership fees to the BCCI over a period of five years in equal instalments and continue to own the property for perpetuity, like in the men’s IPL,” add those in the know.

If the value of the US dollar from 15 years ago is taken into consideration, the current base price (Rs 400 cr) set by the cricket board is slightly lesser than the value at which the costliest franchise (Mumbai Indians) was sold in the Indian Premier League (IPL) back in 2007-08 (Rs 446 cr / US$111.9m).

In doing so, the BCCI could be looking to raise anywhere between Rs 6,000 and Rs 8000 crore (in the range of a billion dollars) from the sale of these five franchises.

Cricket board could be missing a few tricks

The BCCI has asked the existing men’s IPL team owners to participate in the bidding but the tender process is open to any and all investors who meet the cricket board’s minimum eligibility criteria. There is no guarantee whatsoever that should the bid of an existing IPL franchise owner and a new investor match, any preference shall be given to the existing franchise owner.

In doing this, the BCCI could be missing out on a few tricks. Here’s what some industry executives have to say on the matter:

  • If men’s IPL franchise owners are allowed to bid for women’s franchises too, profits from men’s IPL can be reinvested in the women’s game. For a newcomer, this will clearly be a loss-making enterprise for a while. So, will it be sustainable in the longer run?
  • By not giving men’s IPL franchise owners a preference, the BCCI is potentially losing an opportunity on the learnings that existing team owners have had over the course of time, IPs, operational synergies, the traction that can be generated from existing businesses that can be beneficial to women’s cricket and more.
  • Long-term running of a franchise, ensuring good infrastructure, building of a brand, etc, can be done in a far smoother manner if existing franchises are involved.

Further, as a reference point, BCCI can take into consideration that the English Premier League’s women’s leg – the Women’s Super League – has all 12 EPL club owners. In women’s NBA in the US, the existing clubs were given first rights of refusal in their region and when the women’s teams were handed out, four NBA clubs took the rights reserved while four other teams were bought by individuals owning clubs in the NFL.

“The BCCI should have a very strict and specific technical bid in this case. If an existing franchise owner and a new investor were to put in the same financial bid, the technical bid should allow the bidder with more experience in this space to prevail. It will be good for the women’s league on the longer run,” industry voices say.

For the record, the BCCI will sell the women’s IPL franchises and the broadcast rights by way of a closed bid and not an e-auction.

'No cowards in Australian cricket, not ever': Pat Cummins breaks silence on Justin Langer's criticism

Perth: Australia Test skipper Pat Cummins has said that there are “no cowards” in the side contrary to what is being claimed by former coach Justin Langer.

Last week, Langer had said that some of the players in the team weren’t transparent about the feedback which eventually led to his exit despite a successful run at the 2021 Ashes and T20 World Cup.

“There’s no cowards in Australian cricket, not ever,” Cummins told reporters on the eve of the first Test against West Indies. “I’d probably never disclose private conversations. I think it’s disappointing sometimes the focus gets drawn to off-field issues but it hasn’t really affected our team.”

“I think there’s no ill will to what he was trying to do and he clarified afterwards,” Cummins said.

“I think he had a think about it and clarified it, so thank him for that. But we’re really proud of the last 12 months, how we’ve fronted up, the way we’ve played, the way we’ve conducted ourselves. Players can certainly hold their heads high.”

Australia announce playing XI for first Test vs West Indies

Australia have also confirmed the XI for the first Test in Perth. David Warner is likely to open the innings with Usman Khawaja while the batting unit comprises of Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green and Alex Carey.

The pace trio of Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc and spinner Nathan Lyon will perform the bowling duties.

Playing XI: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon

India vs New Zealand: Arshdeep Singh reveals how bowling alongside Umran Malik has benefitted him

Team India young pacer Arshdeep Singh has revealed that bowling in tandem with speedster Umran Malik has made things easy for him and the duo share a friendly relationship on and off the field.

Notably, Arshdeep and Umran made their ODI debuts recently in the first ODI against New Zealand at Auckland.

Interestingly, both bowlers have a different sets of weapons. While Arshdeep likes to deceive batters with his swing, change of pace, and yorkers, Malik is lethal with his pace and he proved it by hitting 150 km/h four times and bagging the wickets of Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell in the opening ODI.

“It’s an edge for me to play with Umran. bowling with him is beneficial to me because batters can get deceived by pace when they have to face 135 kph after facing someone who is bowling around 155 kph. So we are enjoying bowling alongside and off the field too. Hopefully, we will continue our partnership,” Arshdeep said in a pre-match conference ahead of the third ODI.

“I don’t think my journey is easy or challenging. We as players focus on playing, enjoying the process, and not thinking much about it being easy or challenging. When we perform our best, it feels good. We take the game match by match and don’t really think too much that I want myself here in the next year or so,” he added.

The 23-year-old Indian pacer had dropped an important catch in the 18th over of Pakistan’s innings against India in the Super Four phase clash of the Asia Cup. He dropped Asif Ali, who took full advantage of the life given to him.

“People love us and our game a lot. So when we perform our best, people love us and when we don’t perform, people show their disappointment. So there is nothing like dealing with this. They express their emotions because we play for India and it’s the fans’ right to express their love or anger. We should accept both,” said the pacer.

Coming to the three-match ODI series, the hosts trumped India by seven wickets as they chased down the target of 307 with seven wickets in hand and 2.5 overs to spare.

The second ODI of the three-match series between India and New Zealand was called off due to rain. The match was called off with the Men in Blue scoring 89/1 in 12.5 overs at the time rain intervened for the final time and put any possibility of further action to rest.

Now, India will aim to level the series when they take on New Zealand in the third and final ODI on Wednesday.

Anupam Kher slams IFFI jury head Nadav Lapid for calling The Kashmir Files 'vulgar': 'No matter how big the lie is...'

Israeli filmmaker and jury head of IFFI 2022, Nadav Lapid called Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files a ‘vulgar, propaganda’ film at the festival. Soon, after his speech went viral, we saw several fans and celebs slamming Nadav including the cast of the Vivek Agnihotri directorial.

Anupam Kher took to his Twitter account and wrote, “No matter how high the height of the lie is… It is always small in comparison to the truth.”

Darshan Kumar told E Times, “Everyone has their own individual opinions on anything they see and perceive. But one can’t deny the fact is that The Kashmir files is a film which has depicted the actual plight of Kashmiri pandit community, who are still fighting for justice against the brutal acts of terrorism.” He further added, “So this film is not on vulgarity but on reality.”

At the closing ceremony of IFFI, Nadav spoke about TKF and said, “All of us are disturbed. It felt to us like a ‘propaganda, vulgar movie’ inappropriate for an artistic competitive section of such a prestigious competition. I feel totally comfortable in sharing these feelings openly on stage since the spirit of the festival truly accepts critical discussion which is essential for art and life.”

India vs New Zealand: ‘Coaches don’t need breaks’, ex-player questions Rahul Dravid, Vikram Rathore’s absence

Team India’s disappointing elimination from the T20 World Cup gave birth to a lot of questions, demanding some basic changes in squad development. It also included a major topic regarding the allowance of frequent breaks for senior cricketers between series throughout the year.

Now, former India player Ajay Jadeja added another point to the controversy taking the names of India’s head coach Rahul Dravid and batting coach Vikram Rathore. The duo took a rest after the World Cup and missed the ongoing multi-format tour in New Zealand.

While speaking on Amazon Prime Video, Jadeja made a stern remark that he believes coaches don’t need any break as they get plenty of time for that during the IPL season. “In the IPL, you have a break for two or two-and-a-half months. They are, after all, my friends. I’ve known Vikram Rathour for a very long time. Dravid has played excellent cricket for India. I have no intention to disrespect them. However, you only work in this position only for two years. So, they should invest everything in it like the players,” he stated.

Moreover, Jadeja cleared the reasons behind his thought. According to him, the side will get very little time before the Bangladesh tour where India will play a couple of Tests along with a three-match ODI series. Thus, Dravid needed to be with the Test squad during this time and it would have enhanced their performance in the red-ball fixtures.

“There will be players travelling from this country to Bangladesh, with a four-day break in between,” Jadeja further explained.

Previously, ex-India coach Ravi Shastri also made the same kind of statement in a virtual interview session. He shed light on the benefits of spending more time with the players and asked, “To be honest, why do you need that many breaks?”

Along with Dravid and Rathore, a number of first-team players including skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli did not travel to New Zealand. It paved a way for youngsters to wear the Blue jersey. As a replacement, VVS Laxman was bestowed the responsibility to guide the side as the interim head coach.

Watch: Ruturaj Gaikwad smashes 7 sixes in an over to make world record; Twitter reacts

Maharashtra skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad on Monday became the first batter in List A cricket to score seven sixes in an over. Gaikwad made the record against Uttar Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy quarter-final match in Ahmedabad.

By hitting seven sixes, Gaikwad accumulated 43 runs in the over, matching the joint effort of Brett Hampton and Joe Carter off Willem Ludick for Northern Districts against Central Districts in a Ford Trophy game from 2018.

Shiva Singh was the Uttar Pradesh bowler and it was a seven ball over because of a no ball.

The record for most sixes in an over (overall) is held by Lee Germon of New Zealand, who clubbed eight maximums during a Shell Trophy match in Wellington.

Shiva Singh conceded a no ball in the fifth delivery of the over which was also hit over the boundary ropes at the Narendra Modi Stadium B Ground.

Ruturaj carried his bat through for a sensational knock of 220 runs in 159 balls, which contained 10 boundaries and 16 maximums.

The batter, thus, joined an illustrious list of cricketers who have smashed at least six consecutive sixes in an over, including Sir Garfield Sobers, Ravi Shastri, Herschelle Gibbs, Yuvraj Singh, Ross Whiteley, Haztratullah Zazai, Leo Carter, Kieron Pollard and Thisara Perera.

Thanks to Ruturaj’s knock, Maharashtra posted 330 for five after batting first.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to the batter’s world record feat.

Gautam Gambhir picks Prithvi Shaw as Hardik Pandya’s competitor for India’s captaincy

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir backs the notion of Hardik Pandya taking over the Team India captaincy role in the future but the cricketer-turned-politician believes that Prithvi Shaw is also in the fray to become the next India skipper.

While backing Pandya is understandable and makes sense as the all-rounder led Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in their maiden season and has already captained India in T20Is, Shaw is an unusual choice because he hasn’t played for Team India since July 2021.

“Hardik Pandya obviously is in line. But that’s going to be unfortunate for Rohit because I think judging his captaincy in only one ICC event is not the right way to probably judge him,” Gambhir said at an event organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

Further talking about Shaw, Gambhir said: “The reason I’ve picked Prithvi Shaw, I know a lot of people talk about his off-field activities, but that is what the job of the coach and the selectors are. The selectors’ job isn’t just to pick the 15, but also to get people walk the right path.”

“Prithvi Shaw is one I feel can be a very aggressive captain, a very successful captain because you see that aggression in the way a person plays the sport,” he added.

It is worth noting that Shaw had led the youth side to the U-19 World Cup win in 2018, but the right-handed batter was suspended for a doping violation in 2019 and ever since then, his fitness has been under scrutiny.

However, Shaw captained Mumbai to the Vijay Hazare Trophy in March 2021. Also, the 23-year-old recently finished second in runs scored at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20s while playing for Mumbai. He scored a career-best 61-ball 134 against Assam, while overall he smashed 332 runs in 10 innings- in the tournament at a strike rate of 181.42.

WATCH: MS Dhoni parties with Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan and rapper Badshah in Dubai, videos go viral

Former India skipper MS Dhoni, who generally prefers to stay away from the limelight and social media, was seen partying with India all-rounder Hardik Pandya and batter Ishan Kishan in Dubai on Saturday night (November 26).

In videos that have gone viral on the internet, Dhoni can be seen singing with famous Indian rapper Badshah while shaking a leg with Hardik and Kishan, who were part of the Indian squad that recently won the T20I series against New Zealand.

As per reports, Dhoni was attending a birthday party of one of his close friends, where several celebrities performed. A series of videos from the event was shared by Dhoni’s wife Sakshi Singh Rawat on Instagram.

Vijay Hazare Trophy: Assam, Jammu and Kashmir eye strong showing in quarters in absence of heavyweights

After 129 matches, the Vijay Hazare Trophy has entered the last-eight stage which begins in Ahmedabad on Monday. Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir won their respective pre-quarters clash to advance in India’s premier 50-over tournament. The group stage of the competition saw some exciting, and lopsided, contests between bat and ball. While giants like Delhi, Haryana and Mumbai are missing from the knockout line-up, rise of Assam and Jammu & Kashmir has been very encouraging this season.

Assam in particular have been very consistent and topped a group featuring the likes of Karnataka, Vidarbha, Delhi and Rajasthan. Jammu and Kashmir on the other hand finished Group D in the second position and qualified for the pre-quarters. In their pre-quarters clash, J&K registered a comfortable seven-wicket win over Kerala to set up a quarters date with Assam.

Before the teams battle it out for a spot in the semis, here’s quick recap of how things have unfolded in the group stages featuring talent across the country:

Fire at top: Top-order batters have enjoyed this year. The likes of N Jagadeesan (Tamil Nadu), Sai Sudarshan (Tamil Nadu), Rahul Tripathi (Maharashtra), Tilak Verma (Hyderabad), Ankit Bawne (Maharashtra) and Rohan Kunnummal (Kerala) have been among the runs, and have scored them at a very consistent rate. Jagadeesan in particular has been on song with five hundreds on the trot and the right-hander would look to keep the show going against a formidable Saurashtra unit in the quarters.

Mighty have fallen, again: It’s been another disappointing season for Delhi and Haryana as both teams, featuring plenty of established names, have failed to make it to the knockout stages. Delhi, who had the services of India players Shikhar Dhawan, Ishant Sharma, Navdeep Saini and Nitish Rana, lost four games out of the seven they played this season.

Haryana on the other hand won three, lost two, drew one and one of their contest ended as NR. Even last edition, Delhi lost three out of their five games while Haryana could only win one out of the five games they played. It was also a disappointing season for defending champions Himachal Pradesh as the Rishi Dhawan-led unit could only win two of the seven games they featured in.

The lop-sided contests: The decision to club NorthEast teams with regular teams has sparked a debate. All teams have struggled and featured in some of the most lop-sided games in history of the competition. The teams would definitely take a sigh of relief in the Ranji Trophy as they would contest in the Plate group featuring teams with similar exposure and experience in the circuit. In the Vijay Hazare, it was more like a net session for the opposite teams. The numbers featuring these teams wear an inflated look and has certainly not helped the health of the competition.

Consistency of Uttar Pradesh, Saurashtra & Tamil Nadu: Both Saurashtra and Uttar Pradesh have emerged as one of the few consistent sides in the domestic circuit. The teams made the knockouts last time around too and are again in contention for the title. While Saurashtra have some domestic giants in their ranks, Uttar Pradesh, with a very inexperienced squad, continue to find match-winners to do the job on the day. It will be their bowling vs Maharashtra’s formidable batting when the two sides lock horns in the quarters.

For Saurashtra, they would look to keep the on-song Tamil Nadu pair of Jagadeesan and Sudarshan quiet in the knockout fixture. For Tamil Nadu, consistency in white-ball continues as the side reaches another white-ball final. They were the runners-up last time around and would like to do one better this time around.

Number cruncher: N Jagadeesan tops batting charts with 822 runs in 7 fixtures. He has hit five hundreds on the trot. Kuldeep Sen has been the most consistent bowler with 18 wickets from six games. Two four-fors and one fifer

Sai Sudarshan and N Jagadeesan hold the record for the best opening partnership. They put on 416 runs vs Arunachal Pradesh

Quarters line-up:

Karnataka vs Punjab

Maharashtra vs Uttar Pradesh

Assam vs J&K

Tamil Nadu vs Saurashtra

Wasim Jaffer explains why there's a dearth of all-rounders and part-timers in Team India

India wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson’s exclusion from the XI for the second ODI against New Zealand hasn’t really gone well with the fans and former cricketers. Stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan has said that Samson was replaced by Deepak Hooda as the team needed to have a sixth bowling option.

Now, former India batter Wasim Jaffer has pointed out as to why there’s a dearth of all rounders and part timers.

Jaffer in a tweet said that lack of patience is a major reason for the same. “We are quick to play them at the highest level, but then after few bad outings, they’re out as quickly as they got in. Vijay Shankar, Venkatesh Iyer, Shivam Dube and Krunal Pandya are few examples. Need to show patience while they develop,” Jaffer wrote.

The former right-handed batter further added that because the team now have bowling machines and throwdown specialists, batters have stopped bowling in the nets.

Apart from Samson, Shardul Thakur who had an ordinary day in the previous game was also made to sit out while Deepak Chahar was included in the final XI.

India presently trail the three-match series 0-1 with one match to go. The third and final ODI will be played on Wednesday in Christchurch.
