India vs New Zealand 3rd T20I Live Streaming: When and Where to watch IND vs NZ live telecast

Team India will aim to maintain their unbeaten run under Hardik Pandya’s leadership when they take on New Zealand in the T20I series decider.

India haven’t lost a series under Pandya, who first led the Men in Blue in the tour of Ireland last summer and also won the T20I series in the tour of New Zealand shortly after the T20 World Cup. India then began the new year with a 2-1 T20I series win over Sri Lanka at home, the side without senior players such as Rohit, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

The Men in Blue had entered this series as the firm favourites after pulling off back-to-back 3-0 sweeps against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, but were in for a jolt at Ranchi’s JSCA Stadium, where half-centuries from Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell as well as a clinical display by the Kiwi spinners led by skipper Mitchell Santner resulted in a 21-run defeat.

India, however, bounced back with a six-wicket victory in a low-scoring thriller in Lucknow, where a sum total of 200 runs were scored in nearly 40 overs, with the Indian team restricting the Black Caps to 99/8 after opting to field. New Zealand, to their credit, fought till the very end, taking the game to the penultimate ball of the match. In the end however, the total proved too low for their attack to defend.

The series thus is set for a showdown, with Pandya and Co aiming to preserve their top spot in the T20I rankings with another victory. For the Kiwis, on the other hand, victory will give them the bragging rights to achieving the rare feat of beating India in India, a feat that was last achieved by the Aussies in March 2019.

Watch: Fan runs away with ball during ILT20 match as massive six lands on road

The International League T20 is underway in the United Arab Emirates, bringing much excitement to fans. The inaugural season of the tournament has grabbed eyeballs for the performances of Alex Hales, Kieron Pollard and Rovman Powell. But on Saturday, 29 January, it was quite another reason why the ILT20 made the headlines.

During a game between MI Emirates and the Desert Vipers, MI’s Dan Mousley smacked a massive six off Matheesha Pathirana on the Sharjah Cricket Ground. The ball went past the roof of the stadium and landed on the road outside. A young fan, who was passing by, grabbed the opportunity and ran away with the ball. A video of the moment has gone viral and left the internet in splits.

In the 19th over, MI Emirates skipper Kieron Pollard smashed a massive six, which once again cleared the stadium. However, this time the fan who found the ball was seen throwing it back into the venue.

The official Twitter handle of ILT20 has shared the amusing clip with the caption, “ When it’s raining 6’s, There are 2 types of cricket lovers… 1. Pick and run  2. Pick and return. Which category are you?”

Watch:

Coming back to the fixture, MI Emirates completely dominated the match. Batting first, they managed to score 241/3 in 20 overs. Andre Fletcher, Muhammad Waseem and Pollard scored half centuries. Waseem emerged as the top scorer, with 86 runs off 44 deliveries. The opener’s innings was laced with 11 fours and 4 sixes.

When it was time for MI Emirates to bowl, the Kieron Pollard-led brigade did not disappoint. Fazalhaq Farooqi grabbed three wickets, dismissing Rohan Mustafa, Desert Vipers skipper Colin Munro and Benny Howell. The Desert Vipers could not manage to stand against MI Emirates’ lethal combination of Trent Boult, Farooqi, Imran Tahir and Zahoor Khan. Eight of DV’s players departed for single digit scores. Tom Curran and Mark Watt scored 12 runs each to emerge as the top-scorers. Desert Vipers were dismissed for 84, handing over an easy 157-run win to Emirates.

Desert Vipers will be hoping for a better performance when they face off against Sharjah Warriors tonight, 31 January at Sharjah. On the other hand, MI Emirates will battle it out with the Gulf Giants on 1 February in Abu Dhabi.

India vs New Zealand: Lucknow curator sacked over pitch conditions in 2nd T20I

The curator of the pitch at Lucknow’s Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium which had come under criticism from India captain Hardik Pandya has been sacked, said a media report. While India won the Lucknow T20I by six wickets to stay alive in the three-match series, it was a very difficult pitch to bat on. New Zealand managed 99/8 in 20 overs batting first and India in reply crawled successfully to the target in 19.5 overs. No six was hit in the match.

After the game, a disappointed Pandya had labelled the pitch a “shocker of a wicket”.

“To be honest, this was a shocker of a wicket. Two games the kind of wickets we have played on. I don’t mind difficult wickets. I am all up for that, but these two wickets are not made for T20. Somewhere down the line the curators or the stadium whichever we are going to play in T20, they should make sure they prepare the pitches earlier, rather than having a couple of games there,” Pandya had said.

According to a report in the Indian Express, the pitch curator has been replaced by Sanjeev Agarwal from Gwalior to get the pitch ready for IPL 2023. The report also added that the last-minute request from Team India management could have played a role in the pitch behaving so poorly. It said that two black soil pitches were prepared for the game but the management asked the curator three days before the game to prepare a red soil pitch, however, the lack of time led to a slow pitch.

Even the pitch on offer in the first T20I in Ranchi favoured the spinners strongly though batting was still easier there.

India’s third T20I will be played on Wednesday (1 February) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Mickey Arthur set to be Pakistan team director, will travel with team during high-profile events: Reports

Veteran cricket coach Mickey Arthur is set to join the Pakistan dressing once again, albeit as a team director and not as a head coach.

There has been a significant hiatus around the appointment of Mickey Arthur as Pakistan’s head coach for quite a while – almost after Najam Sethi was appointed as the PCB Chief, to be specific.

ESPNCricinfo reported on Monday that Arthur is close to signing a deal with the PCB as a team director.

The PCB, as Najam Sethi had made evident in his earlier comments, was keen to have Arthur as the head coach of the side. However, he is currently coaching the English county Derbyshire and is not willing to let go of that position.

Arthur has a contract with Derbyshire till 2025. Arthur will now simultaneously take up the role of team director from 1 April, the report states.

The manner in which the operations will be conducted is quite unusual and the first of its kind in international cricket as Pakistan will not name anyone else as a head coach. Arthur will travel with the team on tours and tournaments he decides and will handpick a group of personnel to run the operations.

Grant Bradburn, who served as Pakistan’s fielding coach earlier will be a high-powered assistant coach. There will be three additional batting, bowling, and fielding coaches.

Several media reports from Pakistan organisations also termed the role of Arthur to be of an online coach.

Arthur is expected to join with the team only during the ODI World Cup and later when Pakistan tours Australia for a Test series. However, the South African-Australian will not be available for the Asia Cup that Pakistan is expected to host.

Arthur was Pakistan’s head coach during the 2016-2019 period and largely transformed the Pakistan squad after their slump in white-ball cricket. The highlight of his stint was when he led the Sarfaraz Ahmed-led side to the 2017 Champions Trophy win beating arch-rivals India in the finals.

Arthur had a short stint with Sri Lanka after 2019 and since then, has been with Derbyshire.

'It would actually be nice': Australia's Alyssa Healy reveals she wants to play for RCB in WPL

The excitement is building up towards the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League that was announced by the BCCI last week, and Australia’s Alyssa Healy is one of the stars who is looking forward to taking part in the event.

The BCCI had on 25 January announced the five successful bidders for the WPL, with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) successfully bidding for their respective women’s teams.

Australian cricket couple Mitchell Starc and Alyssa Healy recently attended the Australian Cricket Awards in Sydney, and it was there when Healy confirmed that she had registered for the WPL auction, and revealed that her desire was to play for RCB, exactly the team her husband Starc has played for previously.

“It would actually be nice to go to RCB”, said the 32-year-old Healy, when asked about the WPL during an interview during the sidelines of the awards function.

According to a report in Times Now, Healy has also visited RCB’s camp during Starc’s stint with the franchise, and also witnessed matches from the stands.

To date, Healy has played 136 WT20Is for Australia, and amassed 2300 runs, with one century and 12 fifties to her name. She had made her T20I debut against New Zealand in Hobart back in 2010.

Sarfaraz Khan is not just smashing on the selection doors, he is burning them: Ravichandran Ashwin

Senior India bowler Ravichandran Ashwin threw his weight behind Sarfaraz Khan on Saturday after the Mumbai batter was overlooked by the national selectors despite his red-hot domestic form.

Sarfaraz’s name did not appear when the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee announced the India squad for the first two Tests against Australia in February, leading to a lot of furore within the Indian cricketing community.

The Mumbaikar has been in outstanding touch this season, scoring 556 runs in the ongoing Ranji Trophy at an average of 92.66 and scoring three centuries in his last five appearances.

Ashwin, an automatic pick for the Indian team when it comes to home assignments, hailed the 25-year-old for making a “strong statement with his sheer performances”.

“This season, he has scored almost 600 runs. He has made a strong statement with his sheer performances. He is averaging in excess of 100 in the last three seasons at a high strike-rate as well.

“Sarfaraz Khan is not just smashing on the selection doors. He is burning them. But unfortunately, he is not getting selected currently. Despite not getting selected, he played a terrific knock for Mumbai against Delhi, the game in which Mumbai lost,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Besides Ashwin, Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar also questioned the selectors over their decision to not even name Sarfaraz in the squad. Gavaskar’s comments came at a time when there were reports of Sarfaraz’s fitness being a key factor behind his exclusion from the senior team.

“If you are looking for only slim and trim guys, then might as well go to a fashion show and find some other models and give a bat and ball in their hands and then improve them. That’s not the way cricket goes.

“How can you score runs? I think at the end of the day if you are unfit, you aren’t gonna score hundreds. Cricket fitness is the most important thing,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying according to India Today.

A similar clamour had been made for Prithvi Shaw, who had been enjoying a superb run of form for Mumbai in the domestic white-ball tournaments. The Delhi Capitals opener was eventually included in India’s squad for the T20I series against New Zealand, which is currently underway.

India vs New Zealand: Spin-heavy contest, SKY-Hardik helps hosts cross finish line and more talking points from 2nd T20I

Team India kept themselves alive in the three-match T20I series against New Zealand in Lucknow, with a nervy six-wicket win on Sunday. With the victory, the Men in Blue levelled the series 1-1 with the decider to be played at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

The Indian bowlers did well to restrict the Kiwis to 99/8 inside 20 overs, but the hosts’ chase was far from straightforward.

The run-outs of Ishan Kishan and Washington Sundar hurt the hosts’ momentum, while Shubman Gill and Rahul Tripathi failed to convert starts. And yet, Suryakumar Yadav (26*) and Hardik Pandya (15*) took India over the finish line with just a ball to spare.

Let’s now take a look at some key talking points from the contest:

Arshdeep finds his rhythm again

Pacer Arshdeep Singh was heavily criticised for leaking runs in the first T20I, especially after he conceded 27 runs off the final over in the series-opener in Ranchi. In that same final over, Arshdeep had started off with a costly no-ball that went for a six off Daryl Mitchell, and that followed up with a free-hit, and successive boundaries by the Black Caps.

However, Arshdeep showed improvement in the second T20I on Sunday, finishing with figures of 2/7 from two overs. His short balls were effective on Sunday, and managed to dismiss Ish Sodhi and Lockie Ferguson. Moreover, the 23-year-old did not concede a no-ball and finished with an economy of 3.50.

Spin-heavy contest

Lucknow witnessed a spin-heavy contest on Sunday. A total of 30 overs in the match were bowled by spinners, with New Zealand spinners accounting for 17 overs alone, and what’s more, not even a single six was hit by either team during the course of the match.

Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Deepak Hooda, and Washington Sundar were all effective, with each of them accounting for a wicket with decent economical figures, with Chahal even bowling a maiden over.

For New Zealand, skipper Mitchell Santner, Michael Bracewell, Ish Sodhi and Glenn Phillips all completed their quota of four overs, while Mark Chapman was also given a go for one over.

Run-out mix-ups

Both Ishan Kishan and Washington Sundar were involved in two separate mix-ups that led to their respective run-outs. While Kishan fell short at the bowlers’ end in the ninth over while looking for a second run, Washington Sundar in a separate incident sacrificed his wicket after a mix-up with Suryakumar Yadav at the other end.

SKY was facing Phillips when he tried the reverse sweep, he got some bat on the pad as the ball rolled towards point. New Zealand had appealed for an LBW but Yadav had set out for the run anyway, despite Sundar’s warning to not take the run. Sundar, too, was out of his crease, and eventually sacrificed himself, with Blair Tickner initiating the run-out.

Rahul Tripathi continues to struggle

Rahul Tripathi, who had made his T20I debut early in January against Sri Lanka, continued to struggle with the bat, being dismissed for just 13 runs on Sunday.

The only match where the 31-year-old has got a start was in the second T20I against Sri Lanka, when he scored 35 runs, but barring that, his outings have been disappointing, with scores of 5,0, and 13.

Tripathi had collected a four off Sodhi’s ball in the eighth over, but barring that, he looked out of touch, finding it hard to get runs on a difficult surface.

SKY-Hardik helps India cross finish line

India had lost their fourth wicket in Washington Sundar in the 15th over following a mix-up, and the hosts found it tough to collect boundaries at regular intervals.

Hardik Pandya joined SKY after Sundar’s dismissal, with India at 73/4 after 15 overs, and could deal with just ones and twos, until Hardik hit Ferguson for a four in the 19th over. That brought cheer among the home crowd, but these were tense moments, with India needing six runs from the last six balls.

Blair Tickner returned, to bowl the final over, and he began with a short of length ball, as Hardik collected a run.

Tickner followed it up with another short of length ball to SKY that ended in a dot ball, and dropped what would have bee a return catch off his own bowling to dismiss SKY in the third ball of the over.

SKY rotated strike to Hardik in the third ball, as the skipper returned the favour in the fourth. India now needed three runs off two balls to seal victory, and SKY, facing another short of length ball from Tickner, slapped it over mid-off to collect a boundary, and seal a nervy win for the hosts.

India vs New Zealand: ‘It was a shocker,’ Hardik Pandya lambasts Lucknow pitch after low-scoring thriller

Captain Hardik Pandya was happy with India’s efforts in a close encounter against New Zealand but wasn’t pleased with the Lucknow pitch and made it clear while speaking at the post-match presentation.

The Kiwis managed only 99 runs in the first innings, thanks to a rank turner as Indian spinners wreaked havoc and restricted the New Zealand batters. However, India were made to toil hard and chased the target in 19.5 overs as New Zealand spinners returned the favour.

“I always believed that we’ll be able to finish the game, but it went quite late. All these games are important with the moments. I stayed in the dressing room till late to ensure that guys inside do not panic. You don’t need to panic because it was about rotating the strike rather than taking the pressure. We followed our basics,” skipper Hardik said after the match.

“To be honest, it was a shocker of a wicket. Both the games we have played on so far. I don’t mind difficult wickets. I am all up for that, but these two wickets were not made for T20. Somewhere down the line the curators or the grounds that we are going to play in should make sure they prepare the pitches earlier. Other than that, happy,” Hardik didn’t like the pitch and was vocal about it.

Stat attack: Chahal achieves notable feat, Suryakumar’s PoTM record, and more

The pitch assisted the spinners, and while being difficult for batters, it did steal the charm of T20I cricket as not a single six was hit throughout the course of 239 legal deliveries.

Hardik was also practical about their win and said that 120 would have been a winning total on the surface.

“Even 120 would have been a winning total. Bowlers – they stuck to their plans and ensured New Zealand batters did not rotate the strike.

“We kept rotating the spinners. Dew didn’t play much part in this. They were able to spin the ball more than us. It was carrying through well,” Hardik added.

Mitchell Santner had similar views as far as the score was concerned and said that 15 more runs would have put them on the winning side.

“It was a great game of cricket. To get it so close was a great effort from the bowlers. If we’d got an extra 10 or 15, could have been the difference,” Santner said at the post-match presentation.

The Blackcaps skipper also praised Hardik and Suryakumar Yadav who steered India home with a 31-run partnership. “The calmness of Surya and Hardik to get them over the line was pretty good.”

“We bowled 16 or 17 (17) overs of spin, definitely something different. With the bounce out there, it looked challenging. You are not sure what a good total is. 120 might have been a good score. Rotation of the strike might have been the difference,” Santner said for the surface and conditions in Lucknow.

India vs New Zealand: Chahal achieves notable feat, Suryakumar's PoTM record and more stats from 2nd T20I

Suryakumar Yadav hit an unbeaten 26 as India edged out New Zealand by six wickets in a low-scoring and tense second Twenty20 international, to level the series at 1-1 on Sunday.

India restricted New Zealand, who won the opener of the three-match series, to 99-8 with Yuzvendra Chahal leading the spin charge on a slow and turning pitch in Lucknow.

India then lost regular wickets as the Kiwi bowlers took it into the final over but Suryakumar, along with Hardik Pandya, anchored the tricky run chase to achieve the target with one ball to spare.

The match witnessed 30 overs of spin without a six being hit in either innings.

The series moves on to the decider in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

Here are a few interesting statistics from the match:

—Yuzvendra Chahal overtook Bhuvneshwar Kumar as India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is. Chahal has 91 T20I wickets after he took one wicket in the second T20I against New Zealand, while Bhuvneshwar has 90 scalps to his name.

—There were a total of 239 deliveries in the second T20I without a single six being hit. Among matches played between Full Member teams, the tally of 239 balls were the most number of deliveries in a T20I without a six being hit.

—Among the Full Member teams, New Zealand bowled the second-most number of overs by spinners in a T20I. Both Zimbabwe and Pakistan have previously bowled 18 overs of spin in a T20I, against West Indies and Australia respectively.

— Suryakumar Yadav have won most Player of the Match awards for India since 2021, as far as men’s T20Is are concerned. SKY has so far won 11 PoTM awards, with Virat Kohli behind him with just three PoTM awards since 2021.

Just before the toss, Hardik Pandya, Rahul Dravid, and Vikram Rathore were seen to have a conversation with Prithvi Shaw. But he is not a part of the playing XI.

IND vs NZ Toss:

Mitchell Santner: We are gonna have a bat. The stats say that it's challenging to chase here. We'll try to get some runs on the board and see what it does. We had a tough one-day series, it was nice to bounce back with a win. Different guys stepping up at different times is always nice. It's never easy to beat India at home. Even in the first match, that partnership between Surya and Hardik put them right back in the game. The key is to take wickets through the middle, that's the best way to slow them down. You got to take (bigger ground dimensions) into account. We play with the same team.

18:38 (IST)

IND vs NZ Toss:

Hardik Pandya: We were thinking to bat first, but bowling also is fine. It can't be more difficult than this in a bilateral series, to lose the first match and have two matches on line. So this should be positive for us. I think bowling-wise, we need to realise, even if we are going for runs, we need to understand that 2 overs also make a difference in this format. I don't want to think much but (the pitch) looks it might spin. Hence we have one change, Umran Malik misses out and Yuzi replaces him. Kulcha is back together, what everyone wanted to see and with Washington Sundar bowling so well, we have three quality spinners.

18:31 (IST)

IND vs NZ Toss:

Mitchell Santner wins the toss and opts to bat first.

18:30 (IST)

IND vs NZ Live:

Pitch report |

Ajit Agarkar: It has a tacky look to it. It is a red soil pitch like in Mumbai. If there is grip or movement off the pitch it will be quick and the batter will not have time. There is no grass on both batting ends. The team batting second will hope for dew.

Dany Morrison: One of the bigger grounds in India. 69m square on one side, 67m on the other side, and 77m today for the straight boundary. One of the bigger grounds in India.

IND vs NZ Live:

After receiving a sort of drubbing in the first T20I, India will lock horns with New Zealand in the 2nd T20I in Lucknow with the series on line. Kiwis have a rare chance to defeat India in a bilateral series at home. Hello and Welcome to live coverage of the third T20I.

India will face New Zealand in the second T20I of the series and will look to defend their enviable home turf record as the Kiwis dare to snatch an elusive victory on Indian soil.

While T20Is are not supposed to offer too much consequence this year, they are surely here for the entertainment of the fans.

It will be interesting to see how India make a comeback after losing the first match and whether will they only change their strategy or will also change their personnel. Is it the right time to hand Prithvi Shaw another international cap? Or will it be too early to break faith in Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill?

The Indian top order failed miserably and seems too heavily dependent on Suryakumar Yadav. If not for Washington Sundar, they were staring at a humiliating defeat.

The fast bowlers as well have looked wayward as Umran Malik’s line and length does not complement his speed and Arshdeep Singh seems to have a tendency of being inconsistent.

New Zealand, for the first time on this tour, will feel stronger and motivated enough as they have a real chance to crush Indians.

Their batters attacked the Indian bowlers tirelessly and posted a very good total. The bowlers then came to the fore and restricted Indian batters well within the target. The spinners too managed to turn the ball square, though they themselves were surprised.

The temperature in Lucknow is expected to be on the cooler side – India is enjoying winter! Both the teams are expected to play an unchanged XI, unless Prithvi Shaw sees the light of the day.

Officials said that three people, including a child and a woman, have been rescued alive. However, he said that the number of casualties could go up. The coach crashed into the pillar of a bridge due to overspeeding while taking a U-turn near Lasbela.

Lasbela Assistant Commissioner Hamza Anjum confirm the incident, saying that the vehicle, with nearly 48 passengers on board, was travelling from Quetta to Karachi.

India women vs England women: How to watch U19 T20 World Cup final live

India have secured their place in the final of the inaugural edition of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, following an eight-wicket victory over New Zealand in what can be called a one-sided semi-final.

The Shafali Verma-led unit will square off against powerhouse England in the summit game and will aim to take the coveted trophy home in its very first edition. In the previous stage, the English brigade defeated Australia by three runs in a low-scoring thriller. India and England will cross swords in the summit game at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom.

India have been enjoying great form throughout the tournament. They have just endured a single defeat so far in the Super Six round against Australia. In their last knockout game, the bowling unit was on top of their form as they bundled out the Kiwis for just 107 runs.

Spinner Parshavi Chopra led the destruction, picking up as many as three wickets. Coming in to chase, India lost their skipper Shafali Verma early. However, another opener Shweta Sehrawat shone with the bat and remained unbeaten at 61 runs off 45 deliveries. Besides her, Soumya Tiwari contributed 22 runs to the scoresheet.

On the other hand, England had to struggle a bit to overcome Australia in their last match. Batting first, they managed to produce just 99 runs in 20 overs. Though it looked like an easy task for the Aussies, their batting line-up also suffered a collapse. A three-wicket haul from England spinner Hannah Baker and captain Grace Scrivens’ two wickets finally brought Australia down to their knees, earning a dramatic 3-run win.

India vs New Zealand 2nd T20I Live Streaming: When and where to watch IND vs NZ live telecast

India will have to raise their game a few notches as the Hardik Pandya-led side faces a must-win situation to level the three-match T20I series against New Zealand, here on Sunday.

India were caught in a spin web on the Ranchi pitch and lost the opener by 21 runs on Friday.

The loss also highlighted India’s bowling profligacy, especially by the pace duo of Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik.

If tearaway pacer Malik conceded 16 runs in one over, Arshdeep leaked 27 runs in the last over, which put pressure on the India batters while chasing.

That expensive over from the young left-arm quick was the turning point as he was smashed for three sixes and a boundary.

India’s batters were off to an inauspicious start with the top-three managing just 15 runs. The hosts ended up scoring 155/9, which would have been a par score to defend on the wicket, as indicated by Washington Sundar after the match.

“150 would’ve been par and we would’ve been very happy with it,” the India all-rounder said.

Skipper Pandya, however, is unlikely to bring in uncapped pace bowler Mukesh Kumar for the second T20I and will probably back Arshdeep to bounce back.

India vs New Zealand: Fans fume at team management after Prithvi Shaw snubbed from playing XI for first T20I

The emergence of a number of young talents has made the task quite difficult for the Indian team management to select a concrete eleven. Though a few fresh faces have been called up for the three-match T20I series against New Zealand, it is not that easy to accommodate them all in the same set owing to the fact that more than one player is there for a single spot.

Young opener Prithvi Shaw has returned to the national team after a long time thanks to his impressive show in the domestic circuit. He came under the radar following his mammoth 379-run knock in the Ranji Trophy. The Mumbai right hander was also in pretty good touch in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s. However, he failed to get a place in the opening T20I as India preferred to go with in-form opener Shubman Gill.

On the eve of the series opener in Ranchi, India’s interim T20I captain Hardik Pandya announced that Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill will play as the openers. However, he made the reason clear for the exclusion of Prithvi Shaw. According to Pandya, Gill was preferred over Shaw because of his exceptional batting performances in the just-finished ODI series against New Zealand.

Pandya explained, “Shubman has done really well. So he should get the opportunity first. Shubman will start because of the way he is batting, he obviously deserves to be in the team.” Apart from Shaw, spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, Mukesh Kumar and Jitesh Sharma failed to find a place in the playing XI.

The decision to sideline Shaw did not go down well with the fans as they expected to watch him play in Blue Jersey in the first T20I. They took to social media platforms to vent out their frustration. Numerous memes and posts criticising the BCCI as well as head coach Rahul Dravid surfaced on the internet.

Coming to the match, Winning the toss, Pandya sent the visitors to bat first and the Black Caps posted 176 runs on the board. Both India openers- Kishan and Gill failed on the occasion contributing just 4 and 7 runs respectively to the scoresheet during the chase. Among others, Suryakumar Yadav and Washington Sundar shone with the bat scoring 47 and 50 runs respectively.

However, it all went in vain as other batters failed to stay longer on the crease, resulting in a 21-run loss for India. So, the below-par performance from Gill and Kishan has been sparking the hope for Shaw to be included in the second T20I, slated to be held on Sunday at the Ekana Sports City, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
