'Yeh kya ho gaya': Rohit Sharma concerned with Mumbai's air quality ahead of India vs Sri Lanka

India captain Rohit Sharma seemed a bit concerned regarding the weather condition in Mumbai ahead of the team’s 2023 Cricket World Cup clash against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

If Rohit Sharma’s Instagram story is to go by, things are certainly not looking good. In Rohit’s Instagram story, he posted an aerial view of Mumbai from the flight, but hardly anything could be visible amid thick smog covering the “Maximum City”.

“Mumbai, yeh kya ho gaya (Mumbai, what’s happened)?” he captioned in his story on Instagram.

Over the last two weeks, the weather in Mumbai has been a cause for concern. Mumbai’s Air Quality Index (AQI) on Tuesday morning was 161 that is “moderate” according to the CPBC.

Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) recorded the worst AQI of 257, whereas Sion’s AQI is 218.

On Sunday, the AQI in Mumbai was 152 and on Monday that number further redicted to 143.

To put it into context, any AQI ratings below 50 is deemed to be good, whereas AQI under 100 is satistfactory. “Moderate” AQI is considered when the rating is between 101 and 200, while ratings between 201 and 300 are considered poor.

India, meanwhile, are currently on top of the 2023 World Cup points table with six wins in as many games, and are the only unbeaten team this tournament. Their match against Sri Lanka in Mumbai on 2 November will be followed by matches against South Africa (5 November) and Netherlands (12 November), which will round off the league stage.

'He has no ego': Shoaib Malik recalls conversation with Rahul Dravid

In his post-playing career, former India captain Rahul Dravid has made a swift transition towards coaching. He started as the Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy and then transitioned to coaching various Indian cricket teams, starting with the under-19 team, moving on to India ‘A’ and ultimately taking charge of the senior Indian national team.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

Shoaib Malik, the former captain of Pakistan, was all praise for Rahul Dravid’s approach and even shared a personal story that exemplified his work ethic, and how his approach and thinking has had an impact on Indian cricket.

Under Dravid’s guidance as head coach, the Indian cricket team is currently enjoying an impressive unbeaten streak in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup. India are currently top of the points table with 12 points, having won six out of six games.

Speaking during a discussion on the Pakistani sports channel A Sports, Shoaib Malik recalled the selfless nature of Dravid’s coaching style and said that he had learnt the art of handling players as he steadily climbed the coaching ladder.

“We were travelling from Pakistan to New Zealand. At the same time (on the same flight), the Indian under-19 team was travelling,” Malik said even as other panelists that included Wasim Akram, Moin Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq, listened to the story.

“Rahul Dravid was the under-19 coach then. I was sleeping, and he waited for two hours for me to wake up because he wanted to speak to me. He wanted to ask me ‘you have made so many comebacks, what motivates you?’, Dravid said, ‘I am coaching the under-19 team, so I want to tell them what’s the psyche behind this’,” Malik further added.

Malik said that Dravid, with this gesture, conveyed his lack of ego and the desire to gain insight into the challenges of making a comeback. As per Malik, Dravid himself had seen numerous ups and downs in his career, but he still wanted to speak to a player and wanted to learn.

“So what I am trying to say through this is that he has no ego. He wanted to learn what you go through (while trying to make a comeback). In his own career he has seen lots of ups and downs. So he asked me and I told him. I liked that a lot. The learning process never ends and look where the Indian team is standing today (under Rahul Dravid),” added Shoaib.

Pakistan vs Bangladesh LIVE, World Cup: BAN win toss, choose to bat against PAK in Kolkata

All but out of semifinal race, Pakistan would be desperate to snap their four-match losing streak and add some semblance of respect to their floundering campaign when they take on an equally struggling Bangladesh in their do-or-die World Cup match.

Pakistan have just four points in their kitty and they can add a maximum of six more to touch 10 by the end of league stage.

Three teams are already above Pakistan and it would be a miracle of sorts if they make it to the knockout stage.

Pakistan will not have to just win their remaining matches but they need to win with big margins to swell their net run rate (currently minus 0.205). A defeat against Bangladesh will certainly knock the 1992 champions out of the showpiece.

Pakistan’s biggest let down has been their batters who have failed to last the full quota of 50 overs on four occasions.

Squads:

Pakistan: Babar Azam (c), Shadab Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Salman Ali Agha, Mohammad Nawaz, Usama Mir, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Wasim.

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan (c), Litton Das (wk), Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Najmul Hossain Shanto (vc), Tawhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah Riyad, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nasum Ahmed, Mahedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib

World Cup 2023: Barmy Army trolls Virat Kohli, gets savage reply from Bharat Army

England cricket team’s official supporters’ group — Barmy Army — did not waste much time in making fun of Virat Kohli after the former India skipper was dismissed for a duck yesterday at the World Cup 2023. This was Kohli’s first-ever duck in the ODI World Cup’s history. The Barmy Army came up with a morphed image of a duck with Kohli’s face on it, along with a comical caption on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

The post, however, did not go down well with Indian fans who issued befitting responses. Bharat Army, the official fan group of Team India, replied in a hilarious fashion after England’s Joe Root was dismissed for a first-ball duck. There was more jubilation for the Bharat Army who shared another chucklesome post after England Test skipper Ben Stokes returned to the dressing room without scoring a single run.

Indian fans did have the last laugh in social media war and the scene was no different in terms of the on-field developments either. Rohit Sharma’s men carried forward their incredible winning streak at the World Cup 2023 having got the better of defending champions England by 100 runs in Lucknow on Sunday.

Batting first, hosts India could manage to post 229 runs on board. Skipper Rohit Sharma emerged as his side’s highest scorer having produced a fine knock of 87. Later, Suryakumar Yadav pulled off a handy innings of 49 off 47 balls to guide India to a respectable total. David Willey was England’s best performer with the ball having scalped three wickets yesterday.

Defending a small total, Indian bowlers displayed a terrific performance to bowl out England for a paltry total of 129. Indian pacers ran through the English line-up to earn an emphatic 100-run win on Sunday. Mohammed Shami was the star figure in India’s bowling unit with four dismissals to his name. Shami ended up with sensational figures of 4/22 in his seven overs against England.

The resounding victory helped India to extend their winning run to six matches at World Cup 2023. They are currently atop the points table. England, on the other hand, are languishing at the bottom of the World Cup standings with two points from six games.

Jasprit Bumrah has better control with new ball than myself: Wasim Akram

Wasim Akram, the bowling great, has heaped praise on India’s fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami after the bowlers helped India secure a 100-run win over England in World Cup 2023. Batting first for the first in the World Cup, India were restricted to 229/9 batting first but Bumrah and Shami combined for seven wickets as England were bowled out for 129.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

Akram in his post-match analysis hailed Bumrah for his performance and said that the right-armer is a complete bowler.

“He is the best in the world right now. Top of the ladder! The control, the pace, the variations, just a complete bowler. A treat to watch,” Akram said on the A Sports. “With the new ball, to get this kind of movement on this kind of pitch … pace, carry, follow-through…you name it he’s a complete bowler.”

IND vs ENG: Shami shows he’s more than just a replacement

Akram further explained what makes Bumrah so good and added that the Indian bowler has better control with the new ball than him.

“When Bumrah is bowling to a left-hander from around the wicket and hits the ball on the seam…And when he’s bowling from wide of the crease, the batter will think the ball is coming inside.

“He will play for that angle, but the ball hits the pitch and moves away rather than coming in. Most of the time, you are going to be beaten.

“When I used to bowl outswingers like that to right-handed batters with the new ball, sometimes I couldn’t control the ball also. But Bumrah definitely has better control with the new ball than myself,” Wasim said. “The length where he bowls with the new ball is what creates uncertainty for the batters.”

“Bumrah ka ek hi ilaaj hai uspe pressure daalne: uske spikes chori karlo. Aur koi hal nahi hai (There’s only one way to put pressure on Bumrah. Steal his bowling spikes. There’s no other cure),” Wasim joked.

IND vs ENG: How Shami bamboozled Stokes in a space of 10 deliveries

Akram was all praise for Shami who took four wickets in the match including getting better of Ben Stokes.

“What a World Cup Shami is having! Look at how on every ball the seam hits the deck,” Akram said.

World Cup 2023: England decide to field vs India, unchanged XI for both teams

England won the toss and decided to field against India in Match 29 of the Cricket World Cup at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. England captain Jos Buttler made the right call with the coin with the defending champions desperately needing a win to keep themselves alive in the tournament.

World Cup LIVE: India vs England in Lucknow

England, with one win in five matches, are bottom of the points table and need a win to harbour any hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup. However, even if they win all four remaining matches, it may not be enough to take them through.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

India, meanwhile, are unbeaten in the home World Cup with five wins in five matches and are second on net run rate. South Africa, who have played one game more than India, are top of the standings.

At the toss in Lucknow, Buttler acknowledged that the 2019 champions haven’t done themselves justice with their performance. They have beaten just Bangladesh so far while going down to New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and South Africa.

“We are going to bowl first today. Not anything in particular, it’s a gut decision. It’s a great occasion and hopefully, today we bring our best. Today, we want to put up a good show. We haven’t done ourselves justice, today we want to put up a show and play for pride. Playing in front of a full crowd and against India, it’s a great occasion,” said Buttler.

India come into this fixture after a week’s break with their last outing coming against New Zealand in Dharmsala on 22 October. “It’s always good to have a break. It’s nice to come back here and get back into business,” said Rohit Sharma on the break.

Rohit said India wanted to bat regardless. “We wanted to bat first, we have had a good time batting second. Looks like a good pitch, it’s a new surface which has been relayed here. It has played well for the 100 overs. I mean it’s quite important to think like that but it’s important to get the two points. We have played some good cricket.”

India will thus bat first for the first time this World Cup having chased successfully in all their previous five matches. In team composition, they remain unchanged to shun suggestions that R Ashwin could come in as a third spin-bowling option. England, too, are unchanged from their last outing.

India XI: Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

England XI: Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler(w/c), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.

World Cup 2023: Bangladesh' insipid batting crumbles yet again as spirited Netherlands collect win

“It is hard to swallow. It is very difficult to digest.”

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

Captain Shakib Al Hasan’s words after Bangladesh crashed to yet another defeat in the ongoing ICC World Cup reflected the emotions not just of his beleaguered team, but also the millions of fans back home and around the world.

The Tigers were expected to get back to winning ways against the Netherlands in the second match of the Saturday double-header, the first of the ongoing tournament to take place at Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens.

Bangladesh were the superior side – on paper at least. They are after all, are a Test-playing nation while Netherlands still compete in the Associate circuit, and sit six places below them in the ICC ODI rankings (as well as in the T20I ladder).

Plus Shakib Al Hasan’s side had the closest thing to home advantage on Indian soil in Kolkata with thousands of fans travelling across the border to cheer for the Tigers, resulting in Eden being splashed in green and red instead of the usual blue or purple for a change.

All of that, however, counted for little on the day with the Dutch underlining the fact that their shock victory over South Africa was by no means a one-off, and underestimating the Scott Edwards-led side comes with its own set of perils.

The Bangladeshi performance on Saturday had issues in all departments. But it was their batting, in particular, that let them down.

Tigers flop with the bat yet again

Bangladesh were off to a superb start with the ball after Dutch skipper Scott Edwards opted to bat, removing both openers cheaply to reduce them to 4/2. They would trigger another collapse later in the innings, this time grabbing the remaining five wickets for just 44 runs.

Netherlands, however, had still managed to post a competitive score on an Eden Gardens surface that wasn’t exactly a batting paradise like that of Delhi, thanks primarily to another captain’s knock from Edwards (68) and run-a-ball 41 from Wesley Barresi that helped them recover from the shaky start.

Bangladesh needed their openers to fire them to a strong start in their chase of 230 and a couple of solid partnerships, including one at the very beginning, would have put them in pole position to complete the job. Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan had clicked just one as an opening pair in the ongoing tournament, stitching a 93-run stand against India in Pune that would later help them cross 250, and would have been hoping for an encore at Eden.

Sadly, that was far from the case on Saturday with Das and Tanzid departing in quick succession after the latter got off to a promising start with a couple of boundaries, leaving Bangladesh in a precarious position at 19/2.

There still was hope though; Bangladesh, after all, had been reduced to 27/2 with both openers gone against Afghanistan before fifties from Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto propelled them towards their only victory of the campaign so far.

Against Netherlands, however, Mehidy waged a lone battle in the form of a 40-ball 35 that contained five fours and a six, with the all-rounder the only one to cross 30 from his team. Against the Afghans, he had found ideal support from Shanto and the two ended up stitching a 97-run partnership for the third wicket that eventually sealed the deal in their chase of 157.

With wickets tumbling at the other end and some of the more recognised batters in their middle order departing for single-digit scores, the pressure was starting to take a toll on Miraz, whose free-flowing manner of collecting runs in the middle overs would have had opposition captain Edwards worried for a moment.

Netherlands heaved a sigh of relief when he became the first of Bas de Leede’s two wickets of the day, nicking a full delivery that wasn’t exactly in the driving arc straight to the keeper.

Paul van Meekeren’s dismissals of senior all-rounders Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim, the most recognised members of the Bangladesh squad, were just as crucial as de Leede getting rid of Miraz.

Netherlands seamer Paul van Meekeren celebrates after dismissing Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan. AP

Shakib didn’t quite get the hang of the pitch that he knows all too well from his stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders, getting surprised by the extra bounce to get caught-behind while attempting a cut. Van Meekeren, who had earlier broken the budding third-wicket stand by dismissing Shanto, would then get rid of Mushfiqur with an inswinger that resulted in an inside edge onto timber.

Bangladesh had been reducing to 70/6 with van Meekeren, who would later be adjudged the Player of the Match for his career-best figures of 4/23, breaking the backbone of the Bangladeshi batting order.

Mahdmudullah, their leading run-scorer as well as only centurion in the ongoing tournament, would have backed himself to get his side as close to the target as possible, but even he was overwhelmed by the task of pulling the Tigers out of the pit that they managed to dig themselves into.

By the time he was dismissed by de Leede on 20, the game was as good as over. Grabbing the last two wickets appeared a mere formality, only delayed by a cameo from Mustafizur Rahman (20).

Bangladesh were hurtling out of the race to the semi-finals in any case, and Saturday’s result only confirmed it. But a maiden semi-final appearance or not, Bangladesh would have hoped to put up a semblance of a fight in the remainder of their campaign and bow out with their heads held high.

Unfortunately for them, the current World Cup campaign already appears their worst since they made their debut in 1999, even taking into account their winless run in 2003. Skipper Shakib confirmed the same after the match.

You can say that without any doubt,” Shakib said when asked if this was their worst World Cup outing ever.

“I don’t have an answer as to why we played this way. We were sloppy in the field. We bowled brilliantly. We haven’t batted the way we can bat throughout the tournament. It is a big concern. Today was another day when we totally gave the Dutch the two points,” added the star all-rounder.

World Cup 2023: If R Ashwin plays, Bumrah, Shami would be my pacers, says Aakash Chopra

India will target a sixth win in six matches when they take on England in the World Cup fixture at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday. Men in Blue once again come into the fixture with selection dilemma to solve after Hardik Pandya’s injury.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

All-rounder Hardik Pandya injured himself against Bangladesh as he tried to stop a ball during the follow-through. A ligament tear has kept Pandya out of the game against New Zealand already and he is due to miss the clash against England as well.

This has opened the door for India to try and find a solution. Versus New Zealand, Mohammad Shami came in as the seam-bowling option with Shardul Thakur sitting out and Suryakumar Yadav slotted in as the batting fix.

The opportunity to rest and move things about in the playing XI also comes with the knowledge that India have one foot in the semi-finals. India have won all five of their World Cup matches – vs Australia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand – to occupy second spot in the points table. They’re behind South Africa, who have played one game more, on net run rate.

As India and England head to the World Cup contest in Lucknow, question marks persist over India’s playing XI.

JioCinema expert and former India cricketer Aakash Chopra suggested bringing in R Ashwin and leaving space for two seam bowlers, which he picked as Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami.

“There has been talk that R Ashwin may feature in the game against England because the ground is huge and the pitch was also receptive to turn during the last IPL. During the IPL, there were two types of pitches in Lucknow. One made of black soil and the other from red soil. And, whenever there were games on the black soil pitch, one saw massive turn for spinners. But, on the pitch that had red soil, batting was relatively easy. Even during the month of April and May dew was a factor. As of now they have a surface consisting of red soil and the pitch is largely true with average turn.”

“So, if India play Ashwin, they will increase their batting depth but will be left with spots for only two pace bowlers. So that’s the big question. Will India want to play with only two pacers? In case they want to play Ashwin, then Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami would be my choice of pacers,” he added.

Shami had missed the four opening matches in the World Cup. Against New Zealand, on the first opportunity, he took five wickets.

109 Ashwin Makwana – Men’s Para Chess B1 – Bronze

110 Kishan Gangoli – Men’s Para Chess B2 – Bronze

111 Anita and Narayana Konganapalle – PR3 Mixed Double Sculls – Silver

Here’s a detailed look at the 2023 Asian Para-Games medal table:

Rank Country Gold Silver Bronze Total
1 China 214 167 140 521
2 Iran 44 46 41 131
3 Japan 42 49 59 150
4 South Korea 30 33 40 103
5 India 29 31 51 111
6 Indonesia 29 30 36 95
7 Thailand 27 26 55 108
8 Uzbekistan 25 24 30 79
9 Philippines 10 4 5 19
10 Hong Kong 8 15 24 47

India have sent a much larger contingent this time around — 303 compared to 190 in Jakarta — and have bettered their 2018 performance.

The Para-athletes have emulated the success of the able-bodied athletes. They had won 107 medals during the Asian Games that took place between 23 September and 8 October, the first time they crossed the 100-medal mark.

The first-ever Asian para-games took place in Guangzhou 2010 and has taken place after every Asian Games ever since. India had won 14 medals in the inaugural edition, including one gold, but would put up a improved performance in Incheon 2014, where they won 33 medals including three gold.

After finishing 15th in the first two editions, India would break into the top-10 in Jakarta, finishing ninth with 72 medals.

World Cup 2023: How the round robin format favours the top teams and hurts the weaker sides

Defending champions England have lost four out of five matches at the World Cup and are languishing in ninth spot in the 10-team table, but astoundingly they are still in contention for a semi-finals, even if the progression is still not in their hands. The only factor that has allowed them to escape elimination consistently despite failing to show up constantly is the format of the ongoing ICC event.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

It’s the same thing that allowed Australia to get back into contention for semi-final spots despite two straight losses upfront and has kept Pakistan from being knocked out inspite of three consecutive hammerings.

It’s the 10-team round-robin format that has cut down the chances of Afghanistan reaching the semi-finals even though they have caused two massive upsets; by beating reigning world champions England and 1992 winners Pakistan.

The Netherlands, on paper the weakest team in the tournament, are also not free to dream despite beating South Africa. At max, they can hope for another upset but progression to the next round looks next to impossible.

How and why?

Essentially it’s the round robin format that undervalues an upset or two and favours big teams in the long run. Like Afghanistan, even if you beat two Test playing nations, it won’t be enough in a format where you have to play nine matches to qualify for the semi-finals. When you have nine games to qualify, the bigger teams will catch up sooner or later. If the semi-finalists are going to be decided after nine games for each team, then a couple of upsets won’t be enough.

In the 2019 World Cup, which also had the same format, the fourth team to qualify for the semi-finals had 11 points — which means a minimum of five wins.

An Afghanistan or Netherlands would be able to add more spice to the tournament with the upsets they caused but unless they start earning five wins, at least, a semi-final spot would remain a distant dream.

A single group format heavily favours the top teams as despite losing a few matches, they always have more chances based on their talent wherewithal, and experience to bounce back and edge ahead of the weaker teams.

What is the solution?

The format that ICC used in the 2007 World Cup was a more open format which gave equal chances to the teams to reach the next stage. The 16 teams in the World Cup held in the West Indies were divided into four groups consisting of four sides each.

In such a format even a single win and a tie (points shared) would have been enough to reach the next stage which in 2007 was the Super Eight. And exactly that is what happened in 2007 when Ireland progressed from Group D, finishing second with three points (one win and a tie). Pakistan were dumped out after finishing third in the group.

India also suffered the same fate. Bangladesh caused an upset against them and the Men in Blue later lost to Sri Lanka to finish third in the group thanks to a solitary win over Bermuda.

As we said, two wins were enough for Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to qualify.  And in such a format, Afghanistan could have qualified with their two wins, but they wouldn’t and by the end of the round-robin format in 2023 they would very well be knocked out.

Why is ICC not going to the 2007 format?

In simple terms, it’s because of the money at stake in the World Cup. The ICC events are the biggest money spinners for the global cricket organisation. Star Sports Network has paid $3 billion to ICC for the TV and digital rights for the mega events for the period of 2024-2027. In such a scenario, upsets are unhealthy for ICC’s health.

They want teams like India, Pakistan, and the other top cricketing nations to reach the final stages to ensure eyeballs. In the lack of eyeballs, the value of ICC events will reduce significantly. That’s exactly the reason why ICC never went back to the 2007 format after the early exit of India and Pakistan.

In 2011 and 2015 when the ODI World Cup was a 14-team affair, the teams were divided into two groups with seven sides each followed by quarter-finals. A slightly smaller group as compared to the 2023 format but enough matches for good teams to make a comeback in case of an upset.

The format for 2019 was shelved to create a foolproof tournament that favoured big teams. As the ODI World Cup went from 14 to 10 teams, they are now put in a single group with four teams reaching the semi-finals.

These four teams in all probability would be the top four teams after all they have nine matches (chances) to qualify.

Pakistan vs South Africa LIVE, World Cup: PAK win toss, decide to bat against SA in Chennai

Pakistan vs South Africa LIVE: Pakistan have won the toss and decided to bat against South Africa in a must-win game at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Pakistan come into this fixture on the back of three straight defeats while South Africa have registered four comprehensive wins – all while batting first.

Babar Azam said at the toss: “Every match is important now and we are focusing on that. All departments we need to improve, fielding especially. We need to stick together and discuss how to get better. I’m happy to do well myself now. Two changes – Hasan Ali is sick, so Waseem Jr comes in. Nawaz is also back, Usama Mir misses out.”

Temba Bavuma, the South Africa captain, has recovered from sickness and said they would have liked to bat as well. “We’ve played some good cricket, inspirational performances. We’ve build some momentum with our bowlers and batters clicking. This is not like a T20 WC where you play just 4-5 group games, we need to keep doing well. I would have surely batted here, looks like a good wicket. Hopefully it stays nice and hard like this, we’ll have to assess quickly on how to go about things here. Three changes – I come back, Tabraiz Shamsi and Ngidi comes in. Reeza Hendricks, Rabada and Lizaad Williams miss out.”

Pakistan XI: Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam(c), Mohammad Rizwan(w), Saud Shakeel, Shadab Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Haris Rauf

South Africa XI: Quinton de Kock(w), Temba Bavuma(c), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi, Lungi Ngidi

Pakistan vs South Africa PREVIEW: Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan insisted that his under-performing teammates believe “miracles can happen” as the 1992 champions enter a “do-or-die” battle to rescue their faltering World Cup campaign.

After starting brightly with wins over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka, Babar Azam-led team have been well beaten by India and Australia before being humiliated by neighbours Afghanistan.

On Friday, they face another test of their resources against free-scoring South Africa who have four wins in five games and have shrugged off their shock loss to the Netherlands.

With four group games to play, Pakistan can still make the semi-finals but there is little margin for error.

World Cup 2023: Virat Kohli and other Indian batters bowl in the nets as India prepare for Hardik Pandya's absence

India batters including Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, and Surykumar Yadav were seen rolling their arms in the nets as Men in Blue started their preparation for the England game in World Cup 2023 on Saturday. Hardik Pandya’s unavailability due to an ankle injury he suffered during the Bangladesh match has forced the star batters to take up bowling.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

As per the images doing the rounds on social media, Kohli bowled his part-time seam deliveries in the nets at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. When Hardik got injured while bowling on 19 October at Pune, it was Kohli who had completed the over.

Kohli bowled to captain Rohit Sharma and opener Gill in the nets, as per Hindustan Times. Gill and Surykumar also bowled off-spin during the training session. Gill bowled to Mohammed Siraj, while SKY was up against Rohit and Shreyas Iyer.

Indian batters practicing bowling in nets underlines the importance of Hardik to the squad. The all-rounder at No. 6 provides the perfect balance to the team with his explosive batting skills and seam bowling. In his absence, India opted to play just five bowlers against New Zealand at Dharamsala with Mohammed Shami coming in for Shardul Thakur and SKY replacing Hardik.

India are expected to pick the same playing XI against England in such a scenario one of the batters will have to bowl to make up for the lack of a sixth bowler.

Pandy suffered the ankle injury while trying to stop a straight drive with his foot. The cricketer slipped onto the ground and suffered the injury.

The BCCI had earlier said that he would join the team in Lucknow after his treatment but that has not happened. Now, Pandya is expected to be with the side before the Sri Lanka (2 November) or South Africa (5 November) game.

World Cup 2023: England 'underestimated us', says Sri Lanka's Maheesh Theekshana

Sri Lanka spinner Maheesh Theekshana said defending champions England “underestimated” his team in their key Cricket World Cup clash on Thursday. England were bundled out for 156 runs in 34 overs after deciding to bat. In reply, Sri Lanka chased down the target with a massive 146 balls to spare.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

Jos Buttler’s England suffered their fourth defeat in five matches in the process and have very slim chances of making it through to the semi-finals. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, with their second win kept themselves in contention for the next stage of the competition.

“I think they underestimated our team because we also lost three games and we only won against Netherlands. I think they underestimated us,” Theekshana said.

“That’s why the result went our way because we backed our strength, we went with a simple plan, so that’s why we won the game today.”

Theekshana, who posted miserly figures of 1/21, added: “Our confidence as a team has increased a lot because we have won two matches so far. And this match is a match in which we got a very happy victory.

“As a team, we are looking to play well in the upcoming four matches and reach the semifinals.”

Sri Lanka leaked runs in their first four matches and were walloped for 428 runs by South Africa. Theekshana said the Lankans executed their plans much better in this match.

“In the first four games, we didn’t bowl well in the middle overs. I think we lost three games because of our bowling. So, we did some practice sessions to get more discipline, all the fast bowlers did their hard work before the game so they know what they have to do in the game (today),” he said.

Fast bowler Lahiru Kumara stood out for Sri Lanka with 3/35 before Pathum Nissanka (77) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (65) steered the team to victory in an unbeaten stand of 137.

But it was the return of former skipper Angelo Mathews that spurred the team on. Mathews had come in as a replacement for injured Matheesha Pathirana and made an instant impact with wickets of Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali.

Veteran Mathews gave away just 14 runs in his five overs, which included a maiden as well, of medium-pace bowling.

“As a team, we are very happy that a very experienced player has joined our team. He has played in India. We have a lot to learn from him,” Theekshana said of the veteran all-rounder.

“Even when we bowled, we used his experience in the match. The whole team is very happy to have such an experienced player on the team.”

‘We have a chance of making the semi-finals’: Mendis

Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis hoped his team would do well in the remainder of the league stage and sneak into the semifinals.

Sri Lanka, who won the World Cup in 1996, jumped to fifth in the 10-team table after their second win in five matches.

“The net run rate going up is great for us. We did really well in the first few overs and then just continued. Everyone did really well today. We have another four games left, I think if we can string more performances together we have a chance of making the semifinals,” Mendis said at the presentation ceremony.

Mendis praised the bowling cominbation of Kumara and Mathews for dismissing England cheaply.

“He (Lahiru Kumara) knows his role, he’s our main fast bowling weapon and he bowled really well to control the game today,” Mendis said.

“He (Angelo Mathews) has so much experience, he helps so much in the middle overs. He can bat and bowl, and he also enjoys the game. He also knows how to handle pressure situations, so it’s good having him around. The fielding was also excellent today, we need to do the same thing over the next couple of matches.”

Jos Buttler, the England captain, admitted it has been an “incredibly disappointing” tournament for them.

“It’s been an incredibly tough and incredibly disappointing tournament. Disappointed in myself and all the boys that we haven’t shown a good account of ourselves. There’s no clear answer at the moment,” the English skipper said.

“Can’t really fault the boys’ efforts but we’re playing a long way short of our best. It starts from the front, as captain you want to lead from the front and play well and I’ve been a long way short of my best,” Buttler said.

uttler had no qualms in admitting that he has failed to lead from the front, but the others around him also flopped in the showpiece.

“There are a lot of experienced cricketers in the room, who’ve been through a lot – confident people. You don’t become a bad player overnight, you don’t become a bad team over night,” he said.

“I think that’s probably the biggest frustration, that we’ve been so far short of our best, and for no obvious reason. Just can’t put my finger on it at the moment.”

WATCH: Team India arrives in Lucknow ahead of England clash, receives warm welcome

The Indian cricket team arrived in Lucknow amid a warm and enthusiastic welcome ahead of their highly anticipated match with England in the ICC World Cup on Sunday, 29 October. Led by Rohit Sharma, the Indian team has been a side in form in this ongoing 2023 ICC World Cup and they are currently the only side that has remained unbeaten among the ten participating nations. They are leading the points table with five wins in as many matches.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

The team started their campaign with a convincing six-wicket triumph over Australia in Chennai. Despite early jitters, the side chased down the 200-run target thanks to the collective contributions of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

India’s winning streak continued as they notched up victories against Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. They were convincing and very dominating in their match against New Zealand in Dharamsala on 22 October.

As opposed to the Indian team, defending champions England are currently grappling with their World Cup title defence after a rocky start to their campaign.

Jos Buttler and his team have managed just one win thus far and will take on Sri Lanka in Bangalore on 26 October, leading up to their showdown in Lucknow three days later.

The Indian team arrived in high spirits in Lucknow and received a lavish reception at their hotel, with the staff extending a warm welcome in the traditional style. There are a few injury concerns with the Indian team. Hardik Pandya, who missed the match against New Zealand, is set to miss the game against England on 29 October and Sri Lanka on November 2. The BCCI is hopeful that he will make a recovery and rejoin the squad for the match against South Africa on 5 November.

Hardik Pandya is presently undergoing treatment for a sprained left ankle at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He has not yet started his bowling and in his absence, India played Mohammed Shami and Suryakumar Yadav against New Zealand. It will be interesting to see if they stick with the same combination or include R Ashwin as the sixth bowling option against England.

World Cup 2023: From Wasim Akram to Shoaib Akhtar, ex-Pakistan players slam Babar Azam after dismal show

Nothing seems to be going right for the Pakistan cricket team at the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup. They have lost three straight matches against India, Australia and Afghanistan, and there are reports of internal conflicts within the squad. Although the PCB released a statement saying everything was perfect inside the dressing room, these reports continued to find wings.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

Apart from all this, several former Pakistan cricketers have lashed out at captain Babar Azam and other players for their lacklustre performance in the tournament. The list of critics includes prominent names such as Wasim Akram, Misbah ul Haq, Ramiz Raja, Rashid Latif, Muhammad Hafeez, Aaqib Javed, Shoaib Malik, Moin Khan, and Shoaib Akhtar. All these former players have in varying variety found issues within the Pakistan cricket team.

Aaqib Javed said that Shaheen Afridi should replace Babar Azam as the captain of white-ball formats since he has been a good leader for Lahore Qalandars in the PSL. Aaqib, who serves as the Director and head coach of the PSL team Lahore Qalandars, also criticised most players.

For Pakistan to have any chance of reaching the semi-finals, they now need to win all their remaining four matches against England, South Africa, New Zealand and Bangladesh. Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram was not impressed with the side’s subpar fielding and body language against Afghanistan.

“The fielding and body language of the players was very poor and unconvincing (against Afghanistan). They just didn’t appear capable of defending 283 which is not a small total. The bowling was ordinary and the fielding levels were pathetic,” Akram said in a show on A Sports channel in Pakistan.

Misbah ul Haq too slammed Babar’s captaincy, citing flaws in his bowling changes as well as field placements. He also said that Babar continued to use Haris Rauf in the powerplay despite the fact that Rauf bowled with no control.

“He has wasted Haris Rauf by bringing him on in the power play when there are only two fielders outside the circle. Haris was hit in his first over (against Australia) and he lost all confidence,” Misbah said on the same show on A Sports.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Abdur Razzaq said Babar Azam bats slowly in the middle order and hence, he disturbs the rhythm of the side and it has an effect on Pakistan’s strike rate in the tournament.

“When Babar bats slowly it has an adverse effect on other batters who then can’t play their natural game and this is affecting Pakistan’s strike rate in this tournament,” Razzaq said.

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar too questioned the intent of Pakistan batters and compared it with the way Afghanistan openers started their innings and how they dominated the chase.

“If you look at strike-rate of (Rahmanullah) Gurbaz, he was striking at 120-plus. Our whole team no one has strike-rate of above 90. Do you have any answer for that? I am trying to find answer to that,” Shoaib Akhtar told Zee News.

Asian Para Games: Sumit Antil wins javelin throw gold by breaking own world record as medal tally swells to 42

It was another great start for India as Sumit Antil, the reigning Paralympics champion in javelin thrown, on Wednesday clinched a gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games F64 event with a world record effort of 73.29m. India won another gold in the javelin throw as 17-year-old, Haney, won a gold medal in the F37 event.

The 25-year-old Antil broke his own world record of 70.83m to clinch the Asian Para Games gold. He had registered a throw of 70.83m at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris earlier this year to win the gold.

Another Indian, Pushpendra Singh won the bronze medal with a throw of 62.06m.

Samitha Arachchige Kodithuwakku of Sri Lanka took the silver with a throw of 64.09m.

Antil had won gold in the men’s javelin F64 event at the Tokyo Paralympic Games with a then world record throw of 68.55m.

Haney registered a throw of 55.97 meters, a new Games record, to clinch the gold.

Archers Harvinder and Sahil won bronze in the men’s doubles recurve.

So far India have won 42 medals in the event including 11 gold, 13 silver and 18 bronze and are fifth in the medal tally.

Babar Azam: 'Don't see any attitude from Pakistan team while fielding'

Pakistan captain Babar Azam admitted that his players showed a lack of attitude while fielding and they need extra effort in that department of the game after Men in Green’s eight-wicket defeat to Afghanistan in World Cup 2023 on Monday.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

The eight-wicket loss on Monday was Pakistan’s third defeat on the trot after starting the tournament with back-to-back wins. It was also Pakistan’s first defeat in men’s ODIs to Afghanistan.

The stunning defeat literally pushed Pakistan to the brink of elimination as they will need to win all their remaining four matches to be sure of a semifinal berth.

Against Afghanistan, Babar’s men were sloppy in fielding, especially at the boundary and in conceding a couple of overthrows. He blamed it on the lack of attitude from his players.

“Whenever you do fielding, it is only with attitude. And I don’t see any attitude from the team. You need to put in extra effort and be fit,” Babar said at the post-match press conference.

PAK vs AFG: Wasim Akram slams Pakistan’s fielding and fitness standards

“You should focus on the ball, not on other thoughts, and when the ball comes, as a fielder, you have to be proactive. So, I think we are lagging a little bit as a fielding unit.”

Pakistan play South Africa on Friday and that will be a make-or-break match for them. Babar said his team needs a new approach in the remaining matches.

PAK vs AFG: Stats and records from World Cup match

“We will have to go with a different plan, a different mindset, we will try to bring a positive vibe in the team,” said the captain.

“I hope we learn from this loss (against Afghanistan). It will hurt us a lot. We will try to talk about positive things.

“But, we will also talk about the things we did not do well. How we will do it in the future. Because every match is with a different team.” Babar admitted that his team has been sloppy in one department of the game or the other.

“Sometimes, we do well in bowling, (but) we don’t do well in batting. When we do well in batting, we don’t do it in fielding.”

PAK vs AFG: Top 5 moments from Afghanistan’s win

Pakistan pace bowling attack is rated as one of the best in the world but it has failed to live up to the expectations in this tournament, leaking runs easily.

Babar admitted that the absence of pacer Naseem Shah has hurt the team a lot.

“We are missing Naseem a lot. But apart from that, our bowling lineup is one of the best. But, I think we are not able to click.” He said there is nothing to lose for the side and they will give their best in the remaining matches.

Asked if the team was facing a dip in confidence after losing to arch-rivals Indian in their third match, Azam said, “No, I don’t think so. It’s not like that. We have seen in Australia’s match, we had scored almost three hundred.

“In bowling, we started badly, but we finished up well. But I don’t think we have anything to lose. Every team is a new match, and we try to give our best.”

Shoaib Akhtar slams Pakistan team after defeat to Afghanistan: 'We are scared, we don't play fast'

Pakistan bowling great Shoaib Akhtar ripped into Babar Azam and Co. after the Men in Green suffered their first-ever loss in an ODI to Afghanistan on Monday. The eight-wicket defeat was Pakistan’s third consecutive loss in World Cup 2023 and has pushed them to the brink of elimination.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

Despite Pakistan scoring a solid 282/7 batting first on a tricky pitch, their bowlers and fielders disappointed big time as Afghanistan completed the chase without much pressure.

Pakistan great Wasim Akram in his scathing attack criticised the team’s fitness and fielding standards and now Akhtar has slammed the team’s cautious approach while batting.

“I have played for Pakistan, my heart bleeds. I will keep supporting Pakistan. If I had been with Babar now I would have told him to step up as a captain. This is the worst, which has happened. Now we are playing four teams and let’s win them all,” Shoaib said on YouTube.

“If he is watching my videos, okay the system is messed up…leave it. Play right people. Bring Fakhar back, and give him the license to attack. Bring Zaman, and look for other options. Play aggressively. Babar should also bat with a strike rate of 120. Pakistan is batting with a strike rate of 80 and 90. Gurbaz was playing at 120. Pakistan plays 150 dot balls in every match. We are scared, we don’t play fast.”

Akhtar also added that there’s not one inspiring cricketer in the current Pakistan team.

“Tell me one thing does this team have one inspiring cricketer? I have seen the likes of Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram, Imran Khan, Steve Waugh, Allan Border, Viv Richards. Which cricketer in the Pakistan team is inspiring enough for kids to pick up the sport,” he said. “Why people still watch our videos. We were inspiring the generation.”

PAK vs AFG: Top 5 moments from Afghanistan’s win

The former pacer blasted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for how they have been managing the game in the country.

“You can’t say much after watching this performance. Please put right man for the right place for god sake. Anyone is becoming chairman, for how long we will keep supporting mediocrity? You will keep putting the average people at the helm, you will keep receiving such average performances,” Shoaib said.

“This is the true reflection of the PCB what is showing now on the television today. This is the direct impact of the choices you have made for the past 20-30 years in cricket. This is the end result, you are getting,” he added.

Virat Kohli: Amid imperfect conditions, the perfect chasemaster

In a World Cup known for one-sided contests, the India vs New Zealand match in Dharamsala lived up to its billing. Closely contested over 98 overs, the game played amid a picturesque Himalayan setting, had the audience on the edge for the most part. Yet, despite the thrill and satisfaction it offered, the game was flawed in many ways and none more so because of the pathetic outfield in the HPCA Stadium.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

The sandy outfield lacked even grass coverage and lush conditions for diving. The impact of it was clearly visible during India’s bowling when captain Rohit Sharma brushed his hand trying to stop a ball on the uneven ground and required medical attention. As a result, Indian fielders were largely reluctant to dive in the outfield.

Mohammed Shami and Daryl Mitchell touched upon the poor nature of the outfield in the post-match press conference but held back from criticising it.

England captain Jos Buttler was more direct when the defending champions were in Dharamsala earlier.

“It’s poor in my own opinion. I think any time you’re sort of talking about being careful diving or sort of being careful when you’re fielding, it sort of goes against everything you want to be as a team. You know you want to dive through our houses to save a run. So that’s obviously not ideal, the way the surface is, the outfield. If you feel like you’re having to hold yourself back, it’s not a place you want to be as a team or player, or in a World Cup match,” Buttler had said before the Bangladesh game.

The outfield, however, wasn’t the only imperfection on the night.

The Indian fielders dropped three crucial catches. Rachin Ravindra was dropped on 12 by Ravindra Jadeja and the all-rounder went on to make 75. Mitchell, who scored 130, was dropped twice – by KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah.

There’s more. The India chase was once abrupted due to fog. Yes, that’s right! The game at Dharamsala was briefly delayed due to fog and low visibility. Thankfully it cleared away quickly but at the venue which is at an altitude of 4,700 feet, there’s always a danger of the game being called off due to fog.

Amid all these imperfections, there was the serene perfection of a chase once again being perfectly paced and gunned down by the chasemaster Virat Kohli.

India have won five matches out of five in the World Cup 2023 so far and all of the wins have come batting second. Barring the Pakistan game in which Kohli got just 16 runs, he has at least a fifty in all other matches. After five matches, his stats read 354 runs at an average of 118 and a strike rate of 91.

On Sunday, he came in to bat in the 12th over at 71/1 after Rohit had laid the foundation with his attacking 46. And while he kept losing partners at the other end, the India batter once again stood tall to bail the team out on a day they were one batter short with Shami playing in place of Shardul Thakur.

When Suryakumar Yadav got run out, with Kohli playing a part in it, on 191 in the 274-run chase, the moment which put real doubts in the minds of fans, there was still 83 needed from 87 balls. But as it so often happens, when Kohli is around, the hope is high and the panic is away.

Kohli made subtle changes to his approach as he stitched a match-winning 78-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja. He scored 40 during the partnership but only three fours and one six out of the total eight fours and two sixes that he hit on the night came after SKY’s dismissal.

In a classic Kohli way, he largely dealt in singles and doubles during the partnership with Jadeja and still never allowed the required run rate to touch 6 or more. In fact, two of his boundaries — a six and four — came in the 46th over of the match when the result was almost a forgone conclusion and the great Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI tons was firmly in his sight.

It wasn’t to be as he got out on 95 trying to clear the mid-wicket for a six. But in the same over the task was done for India with 12 balls to spare.

Kohli didn’t get the No. 49 but his leadership and chasing skills gave India their fifth consecutive win in the World Cup 2023. Like how his innings gave us something perfect in an imperfect game.

World Cup 2023: Mohammed Shami's performance should force Team India to redraw their strategy

Mohammed Shami has shown India a new way of playing in the World Cup 2023. A forced inclusion into the side due to an ankle injury to Hardik Pandya, Shami roared and raged at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala to take a fifer in his first match of the tournament.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

With his sensational spell of 5/54, Shami now has 36 wickets in just 12 World Cup matches at an impressive average of 15.02 and he is the only Indian bowler to have two five-wicket hauls at the highest level in the 50-over format. Most importantly, he is 13th in the list of all-time wicket-takers in ODI World Cups, but has the best strike rate amongst all — 17.69.

What it shows is that there’s no substitute for Shami. For any other team, the 33-year-old pacer would have been the first choice. He is not just a disciplined fast bowler but one with the best upright seam action who can move the ball off the seam, swing it both ways, and also reverse.

It’s actually because of the current strategy that Shami is warming the bench. With Shardul Thakur at No. 8, India have a part-time pacer who can also bat. This allows the Men in Blue to have enough batting and bowling cover. But can Shardul win you a match or two on his own?

Shami can. As he showed in Dharamsala. If not for Shami’s fifer, New Zealand would have easily got to 300-plus which could have been a match-winning score.

Three of Shami’s five wickets came in the death overs including that of the centurion Daryl Mitchell. He also struck in all phases of the match. Will Young fell on his first ball of the match in the ninth over and Rachin Ravindra became his victim in the 34th over.

World Cup: Top five moments from India vs New Zealand

Despite being a senior pacer in the side, missing the first four matches of World Cup 2023, and taking fifer on return to underline his credentials, Shami doesn’t hold any grudges.

“When you are not playing, it is very difficult. But if your team is performing, your boys are moving in a rhythm, then I don’t think you should feel guilty sitting outside,” Shami said after the New Zealand match. “Because you are also a part of the team and a part of the World Cup. I think everyone should enjoy each other’s success.”

He’s right. India are winning and there’s little to complain, but Shami’s performance highlighted that India can be more aggressive and ready for big matches.

Had New Zealand got to 300-plus, considering how India’s chase went, a win for Kiwis on the night would have been a strong possibility. It was stopped with a fifer by a bowler who was your fifth-choice in the match after four regulars — Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravindra Jadeja — who are all match-winners and can’t also be sacrificed.

Now that’s a performance neither Hardik nor Shardul could have given you. So what’s the harm in redrawing your strategy?

Thakur gives you a safety cushion, but Shami gives you the winning edge. And after his performance in Dharamsala which helped India beat the Black Caps in ICC events for the first time in two decades, it’s imperative that India pick him in the playing XI.

Hardik can be the sixth bowler, a move that will strengthen India’s bowling, and the all-rounder’s superior batting skills would continue to give India more steel in batting lower down the order.

It’s to be seen whether coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma opt to stay bold or go back to their preferred safe approach but one mustn’t forget that it’s lack of cutting edge and aggressiveness that’s held India back in the big games on the big stages.

Watch: Shreyas Iyer makes the 'medal' gesture after taking a diving catch in IND vs NZ match

Shreyas Iyer took a brilliant catch at square leg to help India take their first wicket against New Zealand in the World Cup 2023 match on Sunday. Iyer’s diving catch at square leg off Mohammed Siraj’s bowling sent Devon Conway back to the hut.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

After taking the catch, Iyer was seen making the medal gesture which has become so common with Team India fielders. Iyer was trying to indicate that he should be given the ‘best fielder’ medal that the team management has introduced to be handed over to a player after each game in the World Cup.

IND vs NZ: LIVE SCORES AND UPDATES

In the previous match against Bangladesh, Ravindra Jadeja was seen making the same gesture after taking a diving catch at the backward point to remove Mushfiqur Rahim. After the game, Jadeja was handed over the medal in the dressing room.

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have also won the medal in earlier matches. The ‘best fielder’ medal is an initiative by team management to create healthy competition among the players and keep them motivated during the World Cup.

The initiative is a brainchild of India’s fielding coach T Dilip who makes the final decision after each match and then hands over the medal to the winner.

Coming to the India vs New Zealand game.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first with both teams looking to continue their winning momentum. India and New Zealand have won four out of four matches respectively.

With Hardik Pandya missing due to an ankle injury, India have brought in Suryakumar Yadav and Mohammed Shami in their playing XI. Apart from Pandya, Shardul Thakur is also missing the New Zealand match.
