Rohit Sharma on breaking Chris Gayle’s six-hitting record: 'Have taken a leaf out of his book'

Rohit Sharma’s match-winning century against Afghanistan in the World Cup 2023 match at Delhi on Thursday helped the India captain make multiple records including breaking Chris Gayle’s record of hitting the most sixes in international cricket.

Gayle held the record with 553 sixes across all three formats. Rohit hit five sixes during his knock of 131 from 84 balls to become the owner of the record with 556 maximums.

After the match, Rohit said that he followed in the footsteps of Gayle to break the record.

“Universe Boss is Universe Boss,” he said in a BCCI video. “I have taken a leaf out of his book. Over the years, we have seen him, such a six-hitting machine he is wherever he plays.

“We both wear the same jersey – No. 45. I am sure he is happy about it because jersey No. 45 has done it [broken his record].”

IND vs AFG: Of dot balls, destruction and drama

Rohit crossed the 553 sixes mark in 453 games, 30 fewer than Gayle. But the Indian captain admitted that he is surprised to see himself hold the record.

“When I started playing this game, I never thought I would be able to hit sixes like that, let alone that many sixes. Obviously, a lot of work has gone into it over the years. So I am quite happy with the work I have.

“I am the sort of person who will not be satisfied. I want to continue to do what I have been doing. My focus is on that. Yeah, it is a small happy moment for me.”

Rohit’s team has also made a good start to the World Cup. After beating Australia by six wickets in their opener, the Men in Blue defeated Afghanistan by eight wickets.
