World Cup 2023: Why did umpire Richard Kettleborough not give ball down Virat Kohli's legs a wide?

India continued their dominance in the ongoing World Cup as Virat Kohli slammed his 48th ODI ton against Bangladesh in their last match.

However, the last few overs of the match have ignited a lot of debates and deliberations. Kohli refused a few singles and farmed the strike as he looked to reach his century.

There was also one incident when Nasum Ahmed fired a delivery down the leg side and Kohli shuffled inside the line. However, on-field umpire Richard Kettleborough did not raise his arms and deemed the delivery legal. This call, occurring in the 42nd over, played a crucial role in Virat Kohli getting to his 48th ODI century, his third in ODI World Cups. Kohli stepped up and slammed a six to bring up his hundred and also seal the match.

The umpire’s choice to forgo the wide call could potentially be linked to recent amendments in the Laws of Cricket.

Here is what the rule says:

As per the previous rule: “If the bowler bowls a ball, not being a No ball, the umpire shall adjudge it a Wide if, according to the definition in 22.1.2, the ball passes wide of where the striker is standing and which also would have passed wide of the striker standing in a normal guard position.”

There were few changes made to this rule after the latest amendment:

According to the MCC: “In the modern game, batters are, more than ever, moving laterally around the crease before the ball is bowled.”

The rule went on to say that it felt unfair to deem a delivery wide if “passes where the batter had stood as the bowler entered his/her delivery stride.”

Hence, as per this chance, there has been an alteration made to Law 22.1, under which the definition of a wide has encompassed the area where the batters is positioned, the location where the striker had previously stood during the bowler’s run-up, and the trajectory that would typically be beyond the striker in a standard batting stance.

Virat Kohli made the most of this reprieve as he stepped down two balls later and smashed a full toss over deep mid-wicket to raise his century and win the match for India.
