BBL: Watch Melbourne Stars’ Marcus Stoinis smash four sixes in an over against Adelaide Strikers

Marcus Stoinis, playing for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League 2022 (BBL) smashed four sixes against Adelaide Strikers’ Henry Thornton in the 18th over of the first innings.

Stoinis also managed to sneak in a boundary along with four sixes on the fifth ball of the over.

Thornton tried to bowl full, but all the deliveries were in Stoinis’ arc and he exploited that to the best of his abilities to smash them into the crowd.

While the batter slogged the first two sixes on the leg side, the third one was lofted over long off. Three sixes were followed by a boundary as an inside edge ran away to the fine leg boundary. The last delivery of the over was again swiveled towards the cow corner.

This was after Nick Larkin took a single on the first ball and gave Stoinis the strike. The Stars mined 29 runs off the over.

Stoinis scored a brilliant 74 from 35 deliveries with five boundaries and six maximums at a strike rate of 211.43. Stoinis’ Hulk-like innings helped the Stars to put up 186 runs at the end of the 20th over.

Watch the video here:

Strikers were able to score 105/2 at the end of the 13th over while chasing the target.

The Stars are placed seventh on the points table with a solitary win from five games and will require to have a magical turnaround in the next games to qualify for the playoffs. Strikers are better placed at fourth position with three wins from five games.

Dr Qamar Azam, who is in charge of sports injuries at AIIMS -Rishikesh, said Pant will take upto three to six months to recover.

“Pant will take at least three to six months to recover from the ligament injury. And if it’s severe, he may take more time. Further evaluation can be based on his detailed injury report,” the Doctor was quoted as saying to the Times of India.

Should Pant remain absent for the entirety of the IPL, that will be a huge blow for Delhi Capitals, where Pant captains his franchise.

'I would have banned Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis forever,' says Ramiz Raja

Former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja said he would have banned legendary cricketers Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis forever from Pakistan cricket for their involvement in the national team’s involvement in match fixing.

Referring to Justice Qayyum’s report on match-fixing, which pointed at Akram’s involvement in the scandal and subsequently led to his ouster as captain of the team, former batter Raja said Akram and Younis shouldn’t have played for Pakistan again.

The Justice Qayyum report, which was filed in 1995 and released in 2000, saw Younis being fined later as well once the details were made public. Both Akram and Younis, however, continued with their Pakistan career until their retirements in 2003 and 2004 respectively. Both returned to Pakistan later in coaching capacities in multiple stints.

“I think no one should have had the chance (of coming back to Pakistan cricket). If Wasim Akram’s name is in there, and he was censured for not cooperating, right? It was a borderline case. If I was the decision maker at the time, I would’ve banned them forever,” Raja told Samaa TV.

“You brought them back to system. I wasn’t in power at the time. We were told to play with them and work with them, and that was it. No one knew how to tackle that. So many people were involved in that. I don’t know what the compulsion was.”

When asked if he would have meted out a similar treatment to Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir, and Mohammad Asif – who were also banned after spot-fixing charges in 2010 – Raja said, “Whoever is tainted, I’ve zero tolerance on it.”

Amir played for Pakistan after serving a suspension and played for Pakistan in multiple World Cups but was shunned out of the team once Raja took charge of PCB.

“I’m absolutely clear. People say they’ve had the punishment, move on. But I’ve experienced such situations,” said Ramiz.

Former kickboxer Andrew Tate held in Romania for human trafficking

Bucharest: Former professional kickboxer and controversial online personality Andrew Tate has been detained in Romania for alleged human trafficking, rape, and setting up an organised criminal group, prosecutors said.

British citizen Tate and his brother Tristan were expected to appear in court in Bucharest on Friday, with a proposal to keep them in pre-trial detention for 30 days.

“At the beginning of 2021, (the) four suspects formed an organised criminal group with a view to committing the crime of human trafficking on the territory of Romania, but also other countries,” said prosecutors from Romania’s organised crime and terrorism investigations directorate (DIICOT) in a statement dated Thursday.

The brothers, and two Romanians also detained, allegedly trafficked, recruited and exploited women by coercing them into “pornographic acts with a view to producing and disseminating such material” online.

So far six victims have been identified who have been sexually exploited by the suspects.

Several locations were raided across Romania as part of the investigation launched in April.

Andrew Tate appeared on the Big Brother television show in 2016, but was removed after a video emerged showing him attacking a woman.

Tate, who moved to Romania several years ago with Tristan, has been banned from many social media platforms for misogynistic remarks, but was allowed back on Twitter after Elon Musk bought the company.

On Wednesday, Tate got into an argument with Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg on Twitter after he tweeted that he owned cars which were producing “enormous emissions”.

Rishabh Pant accident: Everything we know so far as India cricketer suffers serious injuries

India’s star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was involved in a major car accident on Friday morning when his car hit a divider and caught fire while on his way to home in Roorkee from Delhi. Pant told police he dozed off at the vehicle and has been shifted to a private hospital in Dehradun.

Here are all the important information available about Rishabh Pant’s accident.

1. Rishabh Pant crashed his car into the divider near Roorkee in Uttarakhand around 5:30 am on Friday. He was going to visit his family. According to TOI, a policemen rushed to the spot after the car hit the railing of the Delhi-Haridwar highway.

“Hearing a loud sound of the accident, nearby villagers along with the local cops, rushed to the spot and pulled him out of the car. He was then rushed to a nearby hospital from where he was referred to a major hospital in Dehradun,” said Swapn Kishor Singh, superintendent of police, Haridwar (rural), who was among the cops who rushed to the spot.

A further official police statement confirmed that the incident happened early in the morning.

“The incident took place between 5:30 and 6 AM. Rishabh Pant’s car met with an accident in which he sustained some injuries. He was taken to Saksham Hospital where a team of doctors looked after him,” a statement from the police read.

2. The 25-year-old cricketer was alone in his car, which caught fire after the accident. Pant broke the windscreen to escape the burning vehicle. The car was badly mangled and charred after the impact. Pant injured his leg, forehead, and back during the mishap as police said he was lucky to survive.

“Pant sustained injuries on his forehead, a hand and right knee. However, he is conscious and able to talk. The car he was driving was completely burnt. He is lucky to survive the severe accident,” Singh said.

3. Pant reportedly dozed off while driving while a CCTV footage of the accident, which surfaced online later, suggested it was a high-speed crash.

“It is likely that Pant fell asleep while driving because there was no fog on the road which could have affected the visibility. He has a cut on his left eyebrow and a ligament injury on his right knee apart from having bruises on his back,” another official told TOI.

4. The cricketer was then shifted to Max Hospital in Dehradun for further treatment. A senior official of the hospital said a medical bulletin on Pant’s health will be out soon.

“Once the evaluation is over, we would be able to inform about the gravity of the injuries and the treatments required. Having said that, he is in a stable condition. A detailed medical bulletin would soon be issued after the evaluation is completed,” said Dr Ashish Yagnik, medical superintendent Max Hospital, Dehradun.

5. Pant’s mangled car was taken into police custody and has been sent for further investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

“The charred car has been taken away for further investigation. It is not known whether the airbags had opened or not because nothing is left inside to verify that. A probe is on,” said an officer.

6. Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami has said that all costs of Pant’s treatment will be borne by the state government.

“Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami instructed officials to ensure all possible arrangements for the treatment of the injured cricketer Rishabh Pant and to provide an air ambulance if required,” as per the CMO statement.

7. Max hospital later updated that Pant is out of danger and his condition is stable. A detailed medical bulletin is expected soon.

“Cricketer Rishabh Pant is under the observation of Orthopedics & plastic surgeons. His condition is stable. His detailed medical bulletin will be released once he’s examined. Thereafter, we’ll take the next steps,” said Dr Yagnik.

8. BCCI later came out with an official statement that they are in constant touch with Pant’s family. The cricket body also said they were in touch with the medical team, revealing he had two cuts on his forehead and a ligament tear on his right knee.

ILT20: With crowd-pullers in squad, Gulf Giants hoping to build fan base in UAE, says CP Rizwan

Dubai: The International League T20 (ILT20), the newest franchise cricket league, is set to start on 13 January where the Gulf Giants will be looking to make a big splash.

More often than not, the big names from the traditionally strong cricketing countries steal the limelight, however, Gulf Giants are putting their faith and backing in players from the UAE. Picking up the baton first is CP Rizwan, the captain of the UAE cricket team, who is raring to go.

“To work with an experienced person like Andy Flower, it is a great honour for us, and in terms of the squad, we have a good combination of dynamic, explosive, experienced and classy players. The likes of Shimron Hetmyer, James Vince and Chris Lynn can all destroy teams single-handedly on their day. We can’t wait to hit the ground and produce the goods,” Rizwan said.

When asked about who are the players he is most looking forward to work with in Gulf Giants’ squad, Rizwan said, “James Vince, he has played franchise cricket all over the world, Chris Lynn, a power house in T20 cricket, and Shimron Hetmyer to name a few. Then there is also David Wiese, who is very experienced. This is an exciting squad and working along side them and testing ourselves in tough conditions will help us grow as players.”

Among the more popular sports in the Asian continent and across the globe, cricket, according to Rizwan is a big source of joy for everyone in the UAE. “In the UAE, people love cricket a lot, the IPL, the India-Pakistan games, and Gulf Giants have genuine crowd pullers like Lynn, Hetmyer and Vince. And I am sure, together we will provide the people with some great evenings and go on to build a fan base for the Gulf Giants as well.”

The ILT20 is the first T20 tournament of the kind in the UAE, and Rizwan is gung-ho about this. “This is an opportunity for us UAE players to showcase our talent, rather than a challenge due to the presence of the international stars. We want to make use of this chance and express ourselves and entertain our fans. This is our chance to say to the world that we belong to the elite level.”

Looking ahead to the tournament, Rizwan said, “The Adani franchises are among the best in whatever sport they enter. And here with the Gulf Giants, we want to make a mark and our team’s culture and work ethic will hopefully help us do the best we can. The management wants the best for us and we will work together in one direction.”

Gulf Giants squad: James Vince (C), Shimron Hetmyer, Chris Jordan, Chris Lynn, Tom Banton, Dominic Drakes, David Wiese, Liam Dawson, Jamie Overton, Qais Ahmad, Richard Gleeson, Ollie Pope, Rehan Ahmed, CP Rizwan, Aayan Afzal Khan, Sanchit Sharma, and Ashwanth Valthappa

'No one is indispensable': Gautam Gambhir speaks on KL Rahul's batting struggles

Gautam Gambhir has asked struggling KL Rahul to make full use of the upcoming ODIs against Sri Lanka to continue to be part of Team India. Rahul was removed as India’s vice-captain for the ODI series against Sri Lanka after he failed to impress as a batter on the recently-concluded tour of Bangladesh.

In fact, 2022 has been a dismal year for the batter. In 10 ODIs in the year, he only managed 251 runs at an average of 28. In T20Is, Rahul got 434 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 126.53 and scored just 137 in four Tests at an average of 17.

A powerful hitter of the ball, Rahul had a nightmare T20 World Cup as India exited the tournament in the semi-finals. Not surprisingly, the opener has lost his place in the T20I side for the Sri Lanka series.

Gambhir, who works with Rahul at the IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants, has asked the Bengaluru batter to not think about failures and instead focus on getting runs in the upcoming three ODIs against Sri Lanka

“You can only control what you can control. You can’t control selectors, you can’t control what’s going to happen in the next series. You got three ODIs against Sri Lanka. If you play that, just be in the present. That’s all you can control. The moment you start to think about uncontrollable things, you’re putting undue pressure on yourself,” Gambhir said in Star Sports’ show ‘A Chat with Champions’.

The former India opener further added that no one is indispensable in Team India and it’s the runs that will keep Rahul in the side.

“If you don’t perform, someone else will take your position. That’s not only with Sanju or KL, it’s with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as well. If they don’t perform, you will start questioning about their positions too. That’s what international cricket is about. No one is indispensable. So you got three ODIs, you bat in the middle-order, try and get those runs, because ultimately it’s the performance that keeps you in the side. Not the name, not your talent,” said Gambhir.

Virat Kohli will 'constantly face pressure' from others after being excluded from T20 squad: Sanjay Manjrekar

Former India skipper Virat Kohli was among the senior players to not be included in the Men in Blue’s squad for the upcoming T20 series against Sri Lanka, and Sanjay Manjrekar feels Kohli will ‘face pressure’ from other cricketers who will get opportunities in his place.

Manjrekar went on to say that the management might be looking to give Kohli more game time in the one-day format, especially with 2023 being a year of the ODI World Cup.

“Virat Kohli had a pretty good World Cup. I would have liked him to play as much international cricket as possible, just to be amongst the runs, hitting the ball virtually every week and be prepared for the match situation is a good thing. The thing is Virat Kohli will now constantly face pressure from others who are getting opportunities in his place,” Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo.

“We have seen what the young players have done like Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson when they’ve got the opportunity. So, yes, Virat Kohli is still very much in the plans after the World Cup he had and I’m sure he wants to keep being a member in the T20 side,” the 57-year-old added.

The former Mumbai batter opined that the one-day format was where Kohli had shown consistency over the years.

“Since this is 2023, the World Cup year, I guess India are looking to give him more one-day time and one-day cricket is a great format to get back into form. That is where Virat Kohli has shown he is an all-time great in the way he has played over the years, the consistency, and the match-winning ability.

“Test and one-day cricket has been his two greatest formats. So, somewhere, the selectors are looking at Kohli and saying, ‘Let’s get you to play more of 50-overs cricket,” Manjrekar continued.

Virat Kohli had earlier in the year ended his long wait for a 71st international century, scoring an unbeaten 122 against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup T20 tournament. He then went onto register four half-centuries in the T20 World Cup in Australia, where he ended up as the tournament’s highest run-getter with 296 runs from six matches.

Earlier in December, Kohli scored a century, a knock of 113, in the third ODI against Bangladesh in Chattogram.

The likes of Rahul Tripathi and Ruturaj Gaikwad were named in India’s T20I series against Sri Lanka in January, and Kohli, despite not being a part of the T20 series, remains a part of the ODI series to face Lankans at home.

The ODI World Cup 2023 will be held during October-November in India.

Rohit Sharma shares training photos ahead of India vs Sri Lanka series, Suryakumar Yadav reacts

India skipper Rohit Sharma has been away from cricketing action since he suffered an injury in his left thumb during the India-Bangladesh One Day International series. While KL Rahul assumed the mantle of captaincy in his absence and led India to a thumping 2-0 victory in the Test series against Bangladesh, Sharma seems to be gearing up to get back into the side again.

The India opener will return to the Men in Blue setup in the ODI series against Sri Lanka next month. As he prepares for his return to the squad, Rohit shared a photo of himself training.

The Indian skipper captioned the post, “Getting there”. In the first photo, Rohit Sharma can be seen jogging. In the second and final picture, he was seen practicing his fielding skills.

The images even got a reaction from Suryakumar Yadav, who responded with a heart-eyed emoticon. Rohit Sharma has played a significant role in Suryakumar Yadav’s development as the two have shared the Mumbai Indians dressing room for quite long and Suryakumar’s heroics in the IPL have propelled him in the international circuit.

The pictures were posted after reports surfaced that Rohit Sharma had not yet recovered fully from his thumb injury. The star batter hurt his finger during second India vs Bangladesh ODI at Dhaka and was ruled out of the tournament.

He will also not be a part of the Indian T20I squad for the home series against Sri Lanka. Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of the Men in Blue for the three-game series.

The year was not a memorable one for Rohit who struggled in all formats of the game. The opener was unable to perform in the IPL as well, as his team Mumbai Indians ended at the bottom of the points table.

In the international arena, Rohit was unable to live up to expectations after assuming captaincy of the side. The opener managed to score only 995 runs in 39 matches, considering all formats of the game. He also failed to score a century throughout the year. The India opener will be hoping for a reversal in his fortunes in the coming year.

Under Rohit Sharma’s aegis, India reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in Australia but endured a heart-breaking 10-wicket loss against England. The Men in Blue also failed to do well at the Asia Cup 2022, being knocked out in the second round.

Rohit is expected to join the Indian team for the first ODI against Sri Lanka at Guwahati on 10 January. Hardik Pandya will be the vice-captain for the ODIs.

India squad for Women's T20 World Cup: Shikha Pandey adds necessary experience, Sneh Rana's omission sticks out

A day after men’s team selectors pulled a surprise, the India women’s team followed suit, albeit with a couple of eye-popping decisions. Pacer Shikha Pandey is back after being ignored for 14 months and the 33-year-old veteran deserves the comeback to the fullest. Her addition also brings in the much-required experience to the India squad and pace bowling department.

The seam attack is probably the most inexperienced part of the Indian team. Since Jhulan Goswami retired from T20Is and Mansi Joshi and Arundhati Reddy dropped from the scene, India had largely been relying on all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar, rookies Renuka Singh and Meghna Singh to get the job done.

All this made Shikha Pandey’s prolonged absence even more mind-boggling. With 119 wickets across 104 international games, Shikha has the experience and credentials to be the leader of the pack but there are certain mysteries in Indian cricket that are impossible to decode.

Nonetheless, the selectors have opted for course correction which has been a result of the combination of Shikha doing well in domestic cricket and Indian pacers struggling recently against Australia in the 4-1 T20I series loss at home.

Leaking 12.26 runs on an average in the last eight overs against the Aussies, Indian pacers failed to control the proceedings, leaving captain Harmanpreet Kaur to rue the fact that the team doesn’t have a bowling coach.

“I know we are missing a bowling coach but our bowlers are taking charge,” Harmanpreet had said after the second defeat in the T20I series.

Head coach Ramesh Powar, who also looked after the bowlers, was removed from his post days ahead of the Australia series and since then only a batting coach, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, has been appointed.

In that light, Shikha’s inclusion not only brings in a bowler who can swing the ball and take wickets but also brings in a veteran who can be a mentor to someone like Anjali Sarvani who debuted this month.

Making her case stronger is her recent domestic performances where she took 11 wickets in seven matches of senior women’s domestic T20 competition and five in three games of inter-zonal T20s.

Rana misses out

Shikha’s inclusion could prove to be a masterstroke but at the same time, one feels the selectors missed a big trick by not picking off-spin bowling all-rounder Sneh Rana in the reserves.

Most of the players in the squad pick themselves barring maybe Radha Yadav. With just one wicket in five games against Australia, Radha didn’t really do much to further her case but selectors seem to think otherwise. Rana, who has 19 wickets from 14 T20Is this year as compared to Radha’s 11 in 20, does look unlucky to miss out on a spot in the squad.

More importantly, Rana’s big match and big tournament temperament are what India will be missing more in South Africa during the tournament. Rana was India’s second-highest wicket-taker with seven scalps when the team won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, and took 10 wickets in the ODI World Cup in New Zealand, again second best for India behind Rajeshwari Gayakwad (11). Not to forget she is also a handy batter.

Fight for some spots

Jemimah Rodrigues is India’s first-choice No 3 batter, but with just 28 runs in the last four matches, India were forced to “rest” her for the fifth T20I against Australia where her replacement Harleen Deol scored a quickfire 24 off 16 balls. This is going to be a contest to look forward to.

The tri-series in South Africa ahead of the T20 World Cup could decide who will be India’s No 3 at the ICC event.

Also, it will be interesting to see what kind of pace-spin combo India opts for in South Africa. The conditions might suit pacers, but India have historically relied on spinners to win matches. In case injured pace bowling all-rounder Vastrakar fails to recover in time, the team balance could take a hit with the team managed being forced into playing an extra bowler.

The 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup starts on 10 February and the final is scheduled for 26 February. India start their campaign on 12 February against Pakistan. India’s Group B also includes England, West Indies and Ireland.

India will be playing a tri-series in South Africa before the World Cup in January against the hosts and West Indies.

India squad: Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Yastika Bhatia (wk), Richa Ghosh (wk), Jemimah Rodrigues, Harleen Deol, Deepti Sharma, Devika Vaidya, Radha Yadav, Renuka Thakur, Anjali Sarvani, Pooja Vastrakar, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Shikha Pandey

Reserves: S Meghana, Sneh Rana, Meghna Singh.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who was in Thailand at that time, asked Tendulkar if he was in the area. “Sach.. I just saw u at phulay bay .. r u there,” Ganguly commented on the post. To this, Tendulkar had a witty reply. The right-handed opener tagged his former teammate and replied, “Tu yahan bhi mera peecha kar raha hai Dadi?? I was in Krabi… but that was about 10-12 days back. Hope you are enjoying your trip my friend”.

Tendulkar was last seen in the Road Safety World Series 2022 where he led his side India Legends to lift the trophy. This is the second consecutive time his team had won the cup.
