Ashes 2023: Nathan Lyon suffers 'significant calf strain' ruled out of remainder Lord's Test

In a worrying development for Australia on Friday, veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon arrived in crutches at the Lord’s Cricket Ground for the third day of the second Test against England.

Lyon, who collected eight wickets in the first Test at Edgbaston and also forged a match-winning stand with skipper Pat Cummins, injured his calf while fielding on Day 2 at the ‘Home of Cricket’, and limped off the ground as a result, appearing to wipe away tears.

LIVE: England vs Australia, Day 3 of 2nd Ashes 2023 Test at Lord’s

Playing in his 100th consecutive Test, Lyon’s participation in the remainder of the second Test appears unlikely, especially since scans have shown that he has suffered “significant calf strain”. Not did the 35-year-old arrive at St John’s Wood in crutches, he was also wearing a compression sock on his right calf.

“Nathan Lyon has been diagnosed with a significant calf strain.

“He will require a period of rehabilitation after this match is concluded. A decision regarding his availability for the remainder of the series will be made at the conclusion of the game,” a Cricket Australia spokesman said on Friday, according to AFP.

A report on British tabloid Evening Standard confirmed Lyon would not take any further part in the remainder of the second Test.

Star batter Steve Smith too appeared concerned when addressing Lyon’s injury after stumps on Thursday.

“Obviously it didn’t look good. I mean it doesn’t look ideal for the rest of the game. I’m not sure how he actually is, but if he is no good, it is obviously a big loss for us,” Smith said after the day’s play.

The Australian team management is expected to address Lyon’s injury in greater detail after the conclusion of the Lord’s Test.

In his absence, part-time offie Travis Head is expected to take over spin-bowling duties for the remainder of the game with Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne chipping in.

And should Lyon get ruled out of the remainder of this year’s Ashes, off-spinner Todd Murphy — collected 7/124 on debut against India earlier this year — is expected to assume charge as the lead spinner with leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson and left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann his back-ups in the squad.

AB de Villiers reveals he was 'literally sleeping' before smashing 162 not out against West Indies in 2015 World Cup

More than eight years since he produced one of the most famous knocks in One-Day International cricket, South African batting legend AB de Villiers revealed he was half asleep on the field when he smashed an unbeaten 162 off 66 balls against West Indies in the 2015 World Cup.

In a chat on JioCinema’s Home of Heroes, de Villiers spoke about his journey in international cricket, his childhood as well as some of his most memorable moments on the field.

When discussing his famous knock in Sydney against the Windies, ABD said that he was sick that morning on the eve of the match, had to take a few injections before heading to the venue, skipped warm-up before the game and was actually asleep in the dressing room right up until it was his turn to bat.

“Sydney Cricket Ground 2015. We played a World Cup game against the West Indies. And I was very nervous, very fired up. It’s a must win for us. But 3:00 that morning I got really sick in my room, and I got injections and all sorts of stuff. I didn’t sleep. I arrived at the Sydney Cricket Ground and I told the coach, listen, I don’t think I can warm up, I’m just going to take a nap. Ended up batting first and I was literally sleeping before going out to bat. But my point is there was something more important than focusing out and stressing about a cricket game,” said de Villiers, who was leading the Proteas in that World Cup.

“I honestly felt like I couldn’t play. So, that became the bigger matter that I could just walk out. I was lucky. I was happy enough that I could just play. Finally. Which took everything else sort of out of the equation. And I remember standing there facing my first ball and I was like, I don’t care if I get out there, I’m just going to see the ball and just like move slowly. Be in my mode, you know?

“And it was incredible how in such slow motion everything happened that day. Seeing the ball bigger, I was half asleep. Looking at the sun just standing there going like, oh, this game is actually so enjoyable, so easy, so slow and it’s so difficult to get into that zone. In that zone, it’s so enjoyable,” added ABD.

When talking about the turning point of his career, de Villiers brought up his double-hundred in Ahmedabad during the Proteas’ 2008 tour of India in which they played three Tests that ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

De Villiers struck 217 at the Narendra Modi Stadium (known as the Sardar Patel Stadium back then) and forged  256-run fifth-wicket partnership with Jacques Kallis that played a key role in their innings and 90-run win.

“I never thought I was able of getting close to 200 because I was sort of labelled as this white-ball cricketer who grew up in the high school and liked fast scoring, takes on his shots, not really reliable. So 2008 also I was working with Jacques Kallis at the time, really focusing on my technique. I felt my defence was absolutely shocking. I couldn’t play a front foot defensive shot purely because I was early on the ball. I hated a good length delivery because I wanted to quickly smother it. You know, what I learned to do really just trust your technique, trust the fact that your balance is good and just allowed to hit your face. 45 degree more is the smallest angle bat.

“And I remember facing Sreesanth had that ability of nipping it around, beating the bat a couple of times. And I realized, you know what? I never pushed to that and I started really enjoying playing the front foot defensive shot. And that was the big turning point from 2008. I think that was the foundation layer. And then 2009, 2010, I really started kicking on that story. I started doing that, but also sort of taking the bowlers on at the same time. And the game was very enjoyable since then. Knowing that my defence is in place now, I can also discover other areas of my game,” revealed ‘Mr 360’.

De Villiers made his South Africa debut alongside pace legend Dale Steyn during the 2004-05 Test series against England at home and would go on to play 114 Tests besides making more than 300 limited-overs appearances for them. He would ultimately call it quits in 2018, a year before the ODI World Cup in England.

England vs Australia Live Cricket Score 2nd Test Day 3 Ashes Test at Lord's

Ashes Live Cricket Score: After England wasted dream bowling conditions on day one at Lord’s, it mined excellent batting conditions on day two to slash Australia’s first-innings lead of 416 to 138 in the second Ashes Test on Thursday.

England had 278 runs and gifted all four of its fallen wickets to Australia without regrets.

“We’ve played positive cricket for 12 months and we’re certainly not going to change,” Ben Duckett said after falling for 98. “If we get close or a lead, we’re certainly in this game.”

Worse news for Australia was losing spinner Nathan Lyon to a suspected torn right calf while fielding. He’s not expected to return for the match, a cruel twist in his 100th consecutive test, and could be out of the Ashes series, a major blow to Australia’s chances of retaining the urn.

“Nathan, if he is no good, would be a huge loss,” teammate Steve Smith said. “However, we have Todd Murphy waiting in the wings, who has been bowling beautifully in nets and bowled really well in India (in February-March) when he got his opportunity.”

Following the England bowlers’ worst first day at Lord’s in 15 years, they rebounded with a great second day.

Ashes 2023: Steve Smith's advice turned things around for Australia on Day 2

England were in complete control of proceedings on Day 2 of the second Test against Australia at Lord’s on Thursday. First Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett started strongly after the lunch session and then Ollie Pope joined in to ensure smooth movement.

England had stitched a 91-run partnership for the first wicket and then 97 runs for the second wicket. All was plain sailing as Australia, who had scored 416 runs, and led the Ashes 1-0, looked to be out of ideas.

Things went from bad to worse when Nathan Lyon picked up an injury while trying to take a catch. He hobbled off the field of play with a calf injury and his involvement in rest of the contest is unclear.

That is when timely intervention and guidance from former Australia skipper Steve Smith got the team some much-needed breakthroughs.

“It wasn’t ideal,” Smith said of Lyon’s injury according to cricket.com.au. “We’re going to miss Nathan this game and could miss him for a little while. I said to Patty (Cummins), ‘Why don’t we go for it with the short stuff?’”

In the next 15 overs, Australia staged a mini-revival. Banging in short balls and fielders on the leg side seemed to be the most obvious strategy and yet England were sucked in. Three wickets fell in a gap of 34 runs with Smith taking two catches in the deep.

The wickets included those of in-form Joe Root and Duckett who was dismissed for 98 runs, agonisingly close to his maiden Ashes ton.

“It was interesting. You ask most of the fast bowlers, they probably wouldn’t want to keep charging in and bowling short stuff, but while it looked as likely as it did on a pretty benign surface, I think it was the right way to go,” the former Australian skipper said.

“If you get under a few, then we might stop doing it – maybe, I’m not sure – but they kept taking it on and they kept presenting opportunities for us,” he added.

Smith, who struck his 12th Ashes century and 32nd of his career, was crucial in Australia’s total in the first innings. In reply, England were 278/4 at stumps on Day 2, trailing by 148 runs.

Virat Kohli has established himself Babar Azam still has lots to do: Harbhajan singh

Legendary India spinner Harbhajan Singh feels Babar Azam still has plenty to do and achieve in cricket while Virat Kohli has established himself already. Kohli and Azam are compared regularly for their batting exploits especially with their form in the last couple of years. The duo have also praised each other on public platforms.

Some have voiced their preference for Kohli who has played more international cricket and proven himself on the big stage repeatedly. Others, though, are bent towards Azam who has arguably been one of the best batters in the last few years.

Harbhajan believes Kohli is already in the league of legendary cricketers while Babar still has a long way to go. He added the Pakistan captain also needs to improve in the T20 format.

“Virat Kohli has established himself as a great, while Babar Azam still has a lot to do. He will reach there someday, as he is a wonderful player. He is very good in Test cricket, but maybe T20 doesn’t suit him a lot,” Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel.

The veteran India spinner was joined by former Pakistan seamer Shoaib Akhtar in the discussion. The ‘Rawalpindi Express’ said Azam is improving rapidly and slammed critics for being too harsh on him.

“Virat Kohli is the greatest, and Babar Azam is in the making to be the greatest batsman ever. He is trying to get better in T20s. People are behind him for no reason,” Akhtar added.

The comparisons between Kohli and Azam, or India and Pakistan players, will grow as the ODI World Cup inches closer. India and Pakistan are due to play in the Asia Cup before it and could play as many as five times before the year draws out.

Selection needs continuity and consistency: Sourav Ganguly on Ajinkya Rahane being made Test vice-captain

Ajinkya Rahane returned to the Indian Test team fold at the World Test Championship final after being on the sidelines for 18 months. He made his mark immediately with scores of 89 and 46 runs, albeit in a losing cause against Australia.

With West Indies next on India’s schedule, Rahane has been given the Test vice-captaincy role by national selection committee headed by interim chief Shiv Sunder Das.

The decision to give Rahane, 35, the responsibility rather than grooming someone like a Shubman Gill or an omnipresent Ravindra Jadeja has surprised former India captain Sourav Ganguly.

“I won’t say it’s a step backward. You have been out for 18 months, then you play a Test and you become a vice-captain. I don’t understand the thought process behind it. There is Ravindra Jadeja, who has been there for a long time and a certainty in Test matches, he is a candidate.”

“….but to just come back and straightway become vice-captain after 18 months, I don’t understand. My only thing is that selection shouldn’t be hot and cold. There has to be continuity and consistency in selection,” Ganguly said.

The Indian selectors have gone for a transition by excluding Cheteshwar Pujara for the Windies tour and Ganguly wants clarity on his future. Pujara has featured in more than 100 Tests for India.

“Selectors should have a clear idea about him (Pujara). Do they need him to play Test cricket anymore or do they want to continue with youngsters and communicate it to him. Somebody like Pujara can’t be dropped, then picked, dropped again and then picked. Same with Ajinkya Rahane also,” former BCCI chief Ganguly said.

Sarfaraz Khan deserves a chance

With Rahane performing well in the IPL and coming into the Test team, there is a growing feeling that inroads into red ball cricket are blocked. Ganguly, though, disagrees with that notion. He said a prolific batter like Sarfaraz Khan, who could not do well in IPL, should get a chance.

“I think Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored tons of runs in Ranji Trophy, Irani Trophy, Duleep Trophy. I think that’s why he is in the squad. I feel for Sarfaraz Khan. At some point he should get an opportunity for the amount of runs that he has scored in past three years.

“And same thing for Abhimanyu Easwaran for the tons of runs he has scored in last five to six years. I am surprised that both of them have been omitted but they should get a chance in future. But Yashasvi Jaiswal is a good selection.”

Ganguly has observed Sarfaraz from close quarters as Director of Cricket at Delhi Capitals and disagrees with the belief that he can’t play fast bowling.

“If you don’t play him (Sarfaraz) against fast bowling, how do you know?” he countered.

“If he had problems he wouldn’t have scored so many runs all around (India). I personally feel he has no problems against fast bowling and he should be given an opportunity.”

England vs Australia Live Cricket Score 2nd Test Day 2 Ashes Test at Lord's

England vs Australia 2nd Test Live: The table was set perfectly for England. Toss won and Australia sent in on a grassy strip at Lord’s. Light drizzle just before play started in the second Ashes Test made the air even more humid. The skies were leaden enough for the floodlights to stay on all day Wednesday.

The two highest wicket-takers at Lord’s could fire the first shots.

This was as good as it gets for England. A dream.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad produced swing and nicks off the bats of Australia openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja but they were dropped.

The waterfall of wickets expected by England — and Australia — didn’t materialize and the Australians, after enduring the tough morning and Just Stop Oil protesters, posted a remarkable 339-5 by stumps.

Steve Smith, booed when he walked in and politely clapped when he walked off at stumps, led Australia’s charge with an unbeaten 85. Alex Carey was on 11.

Smith anchored century stands with Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head after Warner and Khawaja frustrated England in the morning.

Josh Tongue, making his Ashes debut, became the first England bowler to bowl out Australia’s opening batsmen since 1968, and the first at Lord’s since 1884.

But the bowling decayed on a slow pitch. Anderson conceded only 29 runs from 15 overs without luck but England conceded 36 extras, including 12 no balls.

Another concern was No. 3 batter Ollie Pope, who injured his right shoulder making a stop after lunch and didn’t return to the field. England said he was receiving ice treatment.

England dropped Moeen Ali to be without a specialist spinner or spin-bowling allrounder for only the second time in 20 years, and needed part-timer Joe Root’s two late wickets in one over to revive some hope.

Virat Kohli gave me seven options for one ball: R Ashwin on T20 World Cup epic vs Pakistan

R Ashwin has disclosed Virat Kohli gave him around seven options when he came in to bat on the last ball of the India versus Pakistan clash of the 2022 T20 World Cup.

India went on to beat Pakistan by four wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in a sensational finish. Asked to chase 160 runs, India needed two runs from the last ball and Ashwin was required to get the job done after Dinesh Karthik was dismissed.

Mohammad Nawaz bowled a wide first and then Ashwin hit the winning runs by playing a shot over the infield.

In a video posted on ICC’s official Instagram, Ashwin opened up on the tense closing moments of the game. He said, “I was cursing Dinesh Karthik for asking me to do the tougher job. As I was just cursing him and I walked in, I realised the enormity of what I was getting into – people yelling. I haven’t seen such a crowd ever.”

A post shared by ICC (@icc)

With a well-set Kohli stationed at the other end, Ashwin walked up for some much-needed advice. “Virat Kohli gave me like 7 options to play off that one ball. If only I was that capable of playing all those shots, I wouldn’t be batting at No. 8. I just talked to myself – I couldn’t say that to him. I looked at Virat and his eyes seemed like he was possessed. And I said, okay he’s on another planet, let me come back to earth,” said the India spinner.

Ashwin elaborated he was confident of the win the moment Nawaz bowled a wide. “The moment he [Nawaz] bowled a wide, I knew I won the contest. I think cricket, in so many ways, is going to give you a lot of messages that way. So that’s where I brought my positivity from. I knew I’d won the game.”

“I think about it every night when I go to sleep. Every time I see the video on social media, I think about what if the ball had just gripped and hit my pad? It was pretty close for comfort. I just felt that the game was meant to be finished by me.”

While Ashwin scored the winning runs, it was Kohli who carried the Indian team to victory. His 82 run knock from 53 balls earned him the Player of the Match honour.

With India 31/4, Kohli and Hardik Pandya (40 from 37 balls) pulled the team towards victory with a 113 run partnership. Despite the effort, India needed 48 runs from three overs.

This is when Kohli went berserk to reduce the required rate significantly. Overall, he amassed six fours and four sixes to beat Pakistan.

“Honestly, terrific innings by Virat. It’s one of the better games I have watched and been a part of,” said Ashwin.

Abhimanyu Easwaran isn't letting the West Indies tour Test snub dash his Team India hopes

2890 runs in the Ranji Trophy since 2018/17, at an average of 62.79. An experience of almost 90 first-class matches and India’s A team captaincy. But all this couldn’t book Abhimanyu Easwaran a berth in India’s Test squad for the upcoming tour of the West Indies. Instead, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad, both with an average below 50 got called up.

The BCCI last week announced the Tests and ODI squads for the Caribbean Tour which sets off on 12 July. Most of the criticism selectors copped for the Tests and ODI squads for India’s upcoming tour of West Indies was centred on two players Sarfaraz Khan and Abhimanyu Easwaran. Both players have shown consistency in the Ranji in the last few years — Sarfaraz Khan has maintained an average of 106 in the last three seasons – but haven’t made the cut to the national side, whereas those who’ve had good IPL seasons were picked up right away.

Easwaran, though a little set back from being ignored once again, still is not letting his hopes sink.

“It’s natural to be a little disappointed. But when you have such a big dream, that passion overpowers everything. I obviously tell myself and I have this inside me that I will never give up. Till the time I play cricket, my aim will always be to play for the country. So I want to focus on that. And I am really positive about that opportunity coming pretty soon and I just want to work hard on my game and focus on whatever tournaments I play. I want to be ready for the day I get picked and I just want to give it my best every single day I play cricket,” Easwaran told SportsKeeda.

Although he did get a call-up for India’s Bangladesh tour last year, he hasn’t still debuted.

The selectors’ decision to ignore Sarfaraz and Easwaran did no go down well with a lot of legendary cricketers. Among those who had criticised the selectors was legendary Indian former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.

“Tell him (Sarfaraz) that his performances are being recognised. Otherwise, stop playing Ranji Trophy. Say, it’s of no use, you just play IPL and think you are good enough for the red-ball game as well,” he had said.

Zimbabwe vs Oman LIVE Score ICC World Cup Qualifiers 2023 Super Sixes Match 1 at Bulawayo

Zimbabwe vs Oman LIVE: Oman have decided to bowl first in the first Super Sixes match of ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2023 against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Thursday.

The Asian side is the underdog going into the contest as they qualified for the Super Sixes with 2 wins from 4 matches in Group B. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, won all four matches in Group A.

“We will bowl first. There is a bit of seam movement that will help our pacers. They are playing well, so we want to restrict them to a low total and chase that down. It was a bad game last time around against Scotland, but we will get better. Only one change in the pace bowling department,” Oman captain Zeeshan Maqsood said at the toss.

“The wicket looks a bit dry, should be a bit slower but we’ll adapt. I’m fit now, got some nice rest and recovery. The guys have had quite a lot of cricket in Bulawayo. We will have to adapt to conditions here, but I trust the boys to do that. Few changes from the last game – Brad Evans, Innocent Kaia, Tadiwanashe Marumani sitting out,” home side captain Craig Ervine said.

Zimbabwe playing XI: Joylord Gumbie(w), Craig Ervine(c), Wessly Madhevere, Sean Williams, Sikandar Raza, Ryan Burl, Wellington Masakadza, Luke Jongwe, Richard Ngarava, Tendai Chatara, Blessing Muzarabani

Oman playing XI: Kashyap Prajapati, Jatinder Singh, Aqib Ilyas, Zeeshan Maqsood(c), Mohammad Nadeem, Shoaib Khan, Ayaan Khan, Naseem Khushi(w), Fayyaz Butt, Kaleemullah, Bilal Khan

A recovering Rishabh Pant updates his date of birth on Instagram bio

Heavy injuries from a near-fatal car crash on 31 December made Rishabh Pant miss IPL 2023, World Test Championship final and potentially the upcoming ODI World Cup later this year. But that is not weighing the star wicket-keeper batter down.

He’s rather grateful for coming out of the injuries and getting a chance at the second innings. Taking to his Instagram account on Wednesday, he added “Second D.O.B – 05/01/23” (the date he had his first successful surgery) to his bio.

If his recent video from training sessions is anything to go by, he seems to be recovering faster than expected. He has shed the crutches and can be seen moving freely, although with a kneecap on.

In a recent picture he posted, he was seen at the National Cricket Academy with teammates KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Yuzvendra Chahal. As part of rehabilitation, he is made to do as many physical activities as possible like swimming, aqua-therapy and table tennis. However, there wasn’t any timeline on when he’d be able to make a comeback in the team.

Reportedly he was free from pain at the NCA, but his lower strength and mobility still remained a concern.

The accident had left all three of his key knee ligaments torn. Two of the ligaments were reconstructed early and the third six weeks later.

Watch: Jonny Bairstow literally removes Just Stop Oil activist during second Ashes Test

The opening day of the second Ashes Test witnessed surprising scenes as activists from the environmental group Just Stop Oil barged on to the field at the Lord’s on Wednesday.

England and Australia players had to immediately intervene to protect the playing surface from being damaged after two of the group’s activists ran on to the playing area after the first over.

England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow tackled one of the intruders with the activists carrying orange dye. It appeared they were making their way to the square before being rudely interrupted.

While Bairstow carried one man all the way to the boundary, Australian batter David Warner stopped the other before the ground stewards reached in to catch hold of them.

The interruption lasted only a few minutes as the ground staff rushed in for a rapid clean-up action.

Later, MCC clarified three individuals were arrested. “Following the earlier pitch incursion, three people have been arrested for aggravated trespassing and taken into police custody and it is now a Metropolitan Police matter,” said a brief statement on Twitter.

Additionally, MCC CEO Guy Lavender said, “MCC condemn in the strongest possible terms today’s pitch incursion and with the behaviour of the protestors involved.”

“Their actions not only endanger themselves and those who work at the ground, but they have consistently shown complete disregard for the people who pay to attend events, not just here at Lord’s but around the country at other sporting venues.”

Earlier this month, the group had slowed down England team bus’ progress towards Lord’s for their one-off Test against Ireland.

The group has been quite active in sporting events in the last few months. Their recent targets were the Rugby Premiership final and World Snooker Championship.

England vs Australia Live Cricket Score 2nd Test Day 1 Ashes Test at Lord's

England vs Australia Live: England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and put Australia into bat in the second Ashes Test under grey skies at Lord’s on Wednesday.

“The overheads have played a massive part in this,” Stokes said. “The wicket looks like it’s got plenty of grass on it so hopefully we can exploit that this morning.”

England brought in fast bowler Josh Tongue for off-spinner Moeen Ali and Australia recalled pace bowler Mitchell Starc in place of Scott Boland.

Ali injured his spinning finger in his comeback Test at Edgbaston but he trained fully this week. England will rely on the part-time off-breaks of Joe Root, who has 18 wickets from 29 tests at an average of 55.44. Stokes said he will also bowl more after committing to 14 overs for two wickets in the first Test.

“We felt having the four seamers, we wanted a point of difference and Tonguey gives us that,” Stokes said. “Joe bowled well last week when he got responsibility with the ball. He’s really enjoyed the challenge of coming on and changing the game with the ball.”

“We just wanted some variety,” Australia captain Pat Cummins said on their solitary team change. “We’re really happy with how Scott has been going. Unfortunately he is the one to miss out this week but we’re excited to have someone of Starcy’s class come back in.”

Australia lead the five-match series 1-0 following their two-wicket victory in the first Test at Edgbaston.

England XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jonny Bairstow, Ollie Robinson, Stuart Broad, Josh Tongue, James Anderson.

Australia XI: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins (captain), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.

ICC World Cup 2023: BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla denies 'political interference' in venue allocation

With the ICC World Cup 2023 schedule announced on Tuesday, some of the non-traditional centres have been allocated matches as the tournament saw wider reach than before. 10 venues – Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Dharamsala, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune – will host the 48 matches of the ODI World Cup to be played between October 5 and November 19.

But some of the traditional venues in Mohali, Indore, Rajkot, Ranchi and Nagpur have missed out even as Trivandrum and Guwahati have been given the nod for the warm-up matches.

CHECK OUT | India’s World Cup schedule

Mohali’s absence from the complete schedule has been the most surprising. The Punjab-based venue has hosted matches since 1996 and Indore hosted a World Cup fixture in 1987. It has led to some questioning if there is political interference.

Punjab Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer questioned Ahmedabad getting the tournament opener, the final and the big-ticket India vs Pakistan game. He also disputed Dharamsala being allocated five World Cup matches.

In response, BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla said, “Virat Kohli’s 100th Test last year was given to Mohali. Mullanpur Stadium is getting ready in Mohali. Had it been ready, they would have got a World Cup match. The current stadium in Mohali did not meet the standards of ICC and hence was denied matches. But that does not matches would not be given to them,” he told ANI.

“Bilateral series matches will be given to them, it is based on a rotational system. No ‘pick and choose’ has been done. ICC’s consent is important in finalising the venues.”

“In Trivandrum, warm-up matches have been given, for the first time. It is not that any centre/zone has been ignored. Stadiums have been chosen after a lot of consideration, even in North East Zone, Guwahati got the matches. A lot of accommodation has been done in the schedule,” he added.

12 venues have been chosen for the World Cup for the first time. Shukla spoke about the inclusion of new venues like Lucknow, Guwahati and Trivandrum. “Lucknow has been added. Uttar Pradesh never got a chance to host a World Cup match. Guwahati has been given a chance. Many venues from the South have been added. A fair amount of consideration was given before venues were finalised. ICC has to approve these venues. It is not purely in our hands. All those raising objections should realise that we need consent from ICC to pick up these venues,” he said.

The World Cup will get underway on October 5 with defending champions England taking on last edition’s runners-up New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. India will get their campaign underway on October 8 against Australia in Chennai.

Watch: Logan van Beek smashes record 30 runs in Super Over as Netherlands secure famous win over West Indies

In a stunning game of cricket, the Netherlands downed West Indies in the Group A match of the ICC World Cup 2023 Qualifiers on Monday with Logan van Beek smashing 30 runs in a Super Over.

The game which was played at the Takashinga Sports Club in Harare saw West Indies bat first and smash 374/6 with Nicholas Pooran leading from the front as he scored 104 not out off 65 balls. Brandon King accumulated 76 off 81, while Johnson Charles added 54 off 55.

The Group A game looked done and dusted after the first innings but Netherlands had other ideas and Teja Nidamanuru scored a magnificent 111 of 76 and was well supported by captain Scott Edwards who amassed 67 off 47 as the European side almost reached the 375-run target.

However, Alzarri Joseph got the wicket of Logan van Beek (28 off 14) on the last ball of the match to restrict Netherlands to 374 and send the contest into a Super Over.

Logan van Beek was once again given the duty to bat in the Super Over and the all-rounder went all berserk against Jason Holder.

The six balls of the Super Over for the Netherlands read: 4,6,4,6,6,4.

Logan van Beek had more left in the tank as he returned to bowl the Super Over for Netherlands and after conceding a six and two singles, dismissed Johnson Charles and Jason Holder to propel the Netherlands to a famous win.

ICC ODI World Cup 2023: 'India are one of the favourites' to win tournament says Sri Lanka legend Muttiah Muralitharan

Team India goes into the 2023 ODI World Cup as favourites, believes Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan.

“I am looking forward to India vs England. India are one of the favourites because they are playing at home and they know how to win in India. This is going to be a very interesting match and I want to watch it,” Muralitharan said at an event in Mumbai where the World Cup schedule was announced.

India last won the World Cup 12 years ago in 2011, when they co-hosted the tournament along with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. And India beat Sri Lanka in the final to end a 28-year wait for a second World Cup victory. The final at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium also happened to be Muralitharan’s final international game.

Since the 2011 World Cup only the host countries have won the Cup. Australia won the 2015 title which they co-hosted with New Zealand in 2019 England won the tournament played in England and Wales.

The pitches in the upcoming World Cup will favour the teams from the sub-continent, believes Virender Sehwag who has played the summit event thrice. However, he also cautioned that Afghanistan may not be able to make the most of it as they don’t have as strong a batting line-up.

“The pitches will favour the sub-continental teams. India and Sri Lanka have good spin attacks. Afghanistan do not have a great batting line-up but they have very good spinners. In 2011, the two best teams came to the final and the better team won,” Sehwag said.

The World Cup will open on 5 October with defending champions England taking on 2019 runners-up New Zealand. India will start their campaign just three days after on 8 October with against five-time ODI world champions Australia in Chennai.

India’s most anticipated clash with Pakistan will take place on 15 October at Ahmedabad. This would be the eighth World Cup clash between the traditional rivals. So far India has won all the matches.

The tournament will run for more than a month and conclude with the final on 19 November.

'It is the Olympics of Cricket': Virendra Sehwag on India vs Pakistan clash 2023 ODI World Cup

The ODI World Cup is to cricket what the Olympics is to Athletics, opined former Indian batter Virender Sehwag as ICC announced the final schedule for the summit event later this year.

On Tuesday the ICC announced the schedule for the 2023 ODI World Cup. India will host the event that will open on 5 October and conclude with the final on 19 November.

Sehwag, who has played the World Cup thrice, knows the ups and downs India have been through in the World Cups very well.

Speaking about the mega cricketing festival at the schedule announcement event on Tuesday, the former Indian opener said, “For me, the World Cup is the best moment. I have reached the final once, won it once and crashed out without qualifying. So the journey has been up and down.”

India reached the final in Sehwag’s very first World Cup in 2003 but was beaten by Australia in the summit clash. His second World Cup was a total disaster as India could not go past the group stage in 2007. And he was part of the team that won the 2011 World Cup, which India also hosted.

“The best were certainly 2003 and 2011, which we won. Everyone was telling us, you have to win and we were like the host nation had never won it,” said Sehwag.

“If you score 500-600 runs in a bilateral series, no one will remember it. But if you contribute 300 odd runs in the World Cup or pick up 10 wickets and you win the crown, that will be remembered throughout your lifetime. Dhoni’s six, Kapil Dev’s 175, still gives us goosebumps. There is nothing bigger than the World Cup, it is the Olympics of Cricket.

“Because representing India in the Olympics is a big thing, but if you win a medal there, it is widely celebrated in the country. No one might know the athlete before they go to the Olympics, but once they come back after winning, the whole country applauds them. So when we won the World Cup, the fans were on the roads celebrating,” Sehwag added.

Talking about the mega India vs Pakistan clash, Sehwag opined that Men in Blue would be the favourites as they handle pressure better.

“Everybody knows that all the focus is going to be on the India vs Pakistan match. I am ready to have a battle with Shoaib Akhtar during that game… on social media. The record says that India haven’t lost a World Cup game to Pakistan,” Sehwag said.

“We are ahead 7-0, out of which we have chased just once. Otherwise, each time India have batted first and put up a match-winning total. I’m not sure what will happen that day (October 15), but the team that handles pressure well will win.”

“I feel that now India handles pressure that is why they win whereas Pakistan have a burden that they haven’t won against India. In the 1990s, they were good at dealing with pressure but after 2000, India soak it better. If any player says that they don’t feel pressure, I don’t think it’s right. We used to say it too but at the end of the day, we know it’s an India vs Pakistan game and emotions run high,” he added.

'We are sorry': Lucknow Super Giants issue apology to Kailash Kher because of Shreyas Iyer; here's why

Shreyas Iyer has been missing out from action for a while now owing to an injury. He is regarded as one of the bright young talents of this generation. Since his international debut in 2017, the 28-year-old has made a significant impact, accumulating an impressive tally of 3,340 runs in 42 ODIs, 49 T20Is, and 10 Tests for Team India.

While Iyer’s prowess with the bat is well-known, there is another hidden talent that he keeps sharing on his social media channels. He is quite the dancer and recently, IPL franchise, Lucknow Super Giants, revealed Iyer’s singing abilities and were then to quick to issue an apology. A video shared by the team on Twitter showcased Iyer participating in the viral Instagram trend “Saiyaan,” accompanied by Aman Khan from the Delhi Capitals and Hardik Tamore and Suryansh Shedge from the Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, respectively.

‘We are sorry Kailash Kher’ was the caption of this shared video.

On a comeback trail

Recent reports suggest that India’s star bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, and batter, Shreyas Iyer, are looking to make their respective comebacks in upcoming Asia Cup 2023. Bumrah has been out of action since September 2022 due to a back injury, forcing him to miss the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. With a persistent back injury, he was forced to undergo surgery in New Zealand.

On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer made the decision to undergo back surgery in April to address a recurring lower-back injury. He had been dealing with a bulging disc in his lower back.

This saw him pull out from the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in March in Ahmedabad. He has, since, undergone surgery in London in May and has been advised to rest while undergoing rehabilitation. This injury initially ruled him out of the final Test against Australia and also forced him to miss the ODI series against them.

England vs Australia LIVE Cricket Score Womens Ashes 2023 Day 5 of only Test at Trent Bridge

Women’s Ashes Day 5 preview: The one-off Women’s Ashes 2023 Test at the Trent Bridge Cricket Ground in Nottingham is poised for an exciting final day on Monday, with England set to resume from their overnight score of 116/5 after being set 268 to win.

Danielle Wyatt, the English white-ball specialist who makes her Test debut in this game, was batting overnight on 20 with Kate Cross unbeaten on 5 for company and the hosts will be pinning their hopes on her to play a central role in the remainder of the chase.

England had earlier got off to a promising start in the chase with openers Tammy Beaumont and Emma Lamb adding 55 for the first wicket with the pair scoring at more than five-an-over. Beaumont, who had scored a magnificent 208 in the first innings, would then get dismissed for 22 off Ashleigh Gardner’s bowling.

Beaumont’s dismissal would trigger a collapse of sorts as Lamb as well as all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt and skipper Heather Knight would depart in quick succession, leaving England reeling at 73/4. Sophia Dunkley briefly tried to revive the English chase, stitching a 37-run stand with Knight, only to depart shortly before close of play on Day 4.

Kapil Dev and not MS Dhoni the original captain cool': Sunil Gavaskar

India’s most loved cricketer MS Dhoni is widely regarded as ‘Captain Cool’ because of his calm personality even on the toughest of days. The popularity of Dhoni’s captaincy style has grown leaps and bounds over the years with experts and fans believing that the ‘Captain Cool’ title fits only him.

Legendary India opener Sunil Gavaskar, is of the opinion that there is another contender for that nickname. Gavaskar reminisced about Kapil Dev’s all-around performance in the 1983 World Cup in a recent interaction with Times of India and said that Kapil is the original “Captain Cool”.

“Kapil’s performances with both bat and ball were dazzling to say the least. Not to forget his catch of Viv Richards in the final. His captaincy was dynamic, exactly what the format required, and his ready smile even when a player dropped a catch or misfielded makes him the original captain cool.”

India started the 1983 World Cup as underdogs but they went on to claim the title after defeating the defending champions West Indies in the final. Dev performed brilliantly with both bat and ball and his catch to dismiss Richards has gone down in the pages of history as a defining moments in Indian cricket.

The victory over the mighty West Indies in the final would become a turning point for the Indian team as they would slowly chart a rise

Gavaskar also sarcastically said that the moment India won the 1983 World Cup could have made for a great advertisement for a toothpaste as all the players and staff were constantly smiling.

“It’s hard to put in words what those moments after the win felt like. It would have made a great advert for toothpaste as everybody around us were laughing and smiling and to see that was simply heart-lifting,” he added.

Zaheer Khan is better than Jimmy Anderson: Ishant Sharma

James Anderson is considered one of the best fast bowlers in cricket history. With 686 wickets, he is the highest wicket-taking pacer in Test cricket and third highest overall. The England pacer has been terrorising world-class batters for two decades and has registered 32 five-wicket hauls in the format with his best bowling figures in a game being 11/71.

However, Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma believes that Zaheer Khan, an ex-India left-arm pacer, bowled better than Anderson.

Ishant said in a YouTube interview with Ranveer Allahabadia that Anderson wouldn’t have been as successful if he had played most of his games in Indian conditions.

“Jimmy Anderson’s bowling style and method is quite different. He plays in different conditions in England. Maybe if he played in India…,” Ishant then stopped.

The anchor smiled and said, “…maybe he wouldn’t have found that kind of success.”

In reply, Ishant said, “Zak (Zaheer Khan) is better than Jimmy Anderson.”

In the longest format, Zaheer took 311 wickets for India in 92 matches. He also took 282 wickets in 200 ODIs for India. The former left-arm pacer ended his Test career with 11 five-wicket hauls.

Ishant also spoke about the 2014 Wellington Test which is remembered for the incident of the Delhi fast bowler abusing Zaheer. Ishant clarified that he never abused his “guru”.

“I had told that to myself. To this day, people don’t understand to whom I said that. I have never abused anyone who has dropped a catch. How can say that to Zak? He is literally like a guru for me. I have never even thought about saying anything like that. It was just frustrating because Brendon McCullum was scoring a lot of runs. There were only three fast bowlers – me, Zak and [Mohammed] Shami. After almost every four overs, we had to bowl again and the wicket was very flat. I was just removing the frustration on myself,” he said.
