'Is it me or the car?': Lewis Hamilton after a second straight year without a win

Lewis Hamilton admitted to wondering if he ‘still has it’ after Mercedes had another disappointing Formula 1 season. For Hamilton, it was a second straight season without a Grand Prix victory to his name.

It is a massive reversal in fortunes from the highs after 2014 where Hamilton won the Driver’s Championship in six of seven years. It went along his previous world title with McLaren. Hamilton’s success brought laurels to Silver Arrows as well with the Silverston-based team winning eight championships in a row.

However, things have turned around dramatically for Hamilton and Mercedes. After being dethroned by Max Verstappen in a tightly contested 2021 season, Hamilton has dropped down the challenge while the Dutch driver has collected wins with ease.

Having made his debut in 2007, Hamilton had not gone a season without winning a race until 2022. Now, he faces internal questions over his abilities to stay competitive.

“Ultimately,” Hamilton told BBC Sport, “when you have difficult seasons like this, there are always going to be moments when you’re like: ‘Is it me, or is it the car? Do you still have it? Has it gone?’

“Because you’re missing that, you know… when the magic happens, when everything comes together, the car and you, and that spark, it’s extraordinary. And that’s what you’re in the search for,” he added.

“I’m only human,” says the 38-year-old. “If anyone in the world tells you they don’t have those things, they’re in denial. We’re all human beings.”

Despite the lack of wins, Hamilton ended the 2023 season in third place behind the Red Bull Racing pair of Verstappen and Sergio Perez. Teammate George Russell finished in eighth place.

Hamilton admitted that it would be a tough season the moment he drove this year’s car back in February.

“I remember it feeling exactly the same,” he says as he compares it to last year. “And that definitely was not a great feeling. I really had high hopes.”

“In February, when we do a download of where the car is going, I was a little more apprehensive, because the previous year it was like: ‘The car is amazing, it’s unique, no-one’s going to have anything like it.’ And then we get to the first test…

“So, I was a little bit more cautious when I was listening, and I was like: ‘We will see.’ And then the car had all these problems. I just knew it was going to be a long year.”

Looking back, he says the changes that were required and asked for, were not made. To compound the frustration, there was no clarity over what was the issue and how to fix it.

Verstappen finished the season on 575 points, a massive 290 points ahead of second-place Perez. He won 19 of 22 races in the season while finishing on the podium in 21 of them. Hamilton acknowledged that the Dutch driver barely had to break sweat through the season.

“You can go through the lap times and some of the data from Max; he is just chilling at the front more often than not,” Hamilton says. “I don’t think he has broken a sweat during the year.

“Even when we were chasing him in Austin, I don’t think he was sweating. I think he was just able to control it. And when you are in that position where you have performance and can back off, the car goes further. The tyres go longer and you are in a sweet spot and it is amazing to be in that place.

“Ultimately, they have done an amazing job and worked and deserve it.”

AB de Villiers not convinced with Shubman Gill’s appointment as captain, says Gujarat Titans missed a trick

Gujarat Titans (GT) parted ways with their marquee signing and captain Hardik Pandya, who made a high-profile return to Mumbai Indians (MI). This was one of the biggest all-cash deals in IPL history amounting to Rs 15 crore as MI secured Pandya’s services once again.

After Pandya’s departure, Gujarat Titans announced opener Shubman Gill as the new captain of the franchise for IPL 2024. While New Zealand’s white-ball skipper Kane Williamson was retained by GT, the franchise opted to give Gill the captaincy.

Speaking about Gill’s appointment on YouTube, former South Africa captain AB de Villiers said that Gujarat Titans missed a golden opportunity to appoint Kane Williamson as the captain. De Villiers said that since Williamson was experienced and had success leading Sunrisers Hyderabad to the IPL final in 2018, it was a missed chance not to make him the captain.

“The minute I saw Kane Williamson’s name as a retained player, I thought there was a fantastic opportunity to give an experienced player who has done it before an opportunity to captain for you. Give Shubman Gill the opportunity just to cement in all the formats in Indian cricket and just to have another good season at the IPL,” De Villiers said.

Pandya’s homecoming to Mumbai Indians was made possible after MI traded Cameron Green to the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Green was acquired by MI for Rs 17.5 crore in last year’s IPL auction. Shubman Gill, who topped the run charts in IPL 2023, now finds himself captaining a franchise at the age of 24.

“They decided to throw him in as captain. It may pay off; I am not saying it is wrong. I am saying that it was a great opportunity for Shubman just to learn a little bit and know that the plan is for him to be captain in 2025. Nonetheless, I am excited to watch him perform and lead from the front,” the former RCB star added.

Kevin Pietersen believes IPL performances will determine Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli’s T20I future

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen believes Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli still have a great chance of being included in India’s squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. The conversation regarding the future of Kohli and Rohit has found a lot of legs recently, especially after India’s loss to Australia in the final of the ODI World Cup.

Both Rohit and Kohli were in excellent form in the ODI World Cup in India, Pietersen said that their performance in IPL 2024 will be crucial in determining their selection for the T20 World Cup scheduled for June next year.

“They (Kohli and Rohit) have every chance, would have to see how they go in IPL, check them in the IPL. Because they have been so incredible servants to Indian cricket, you have to give them the respect and you have to ask them that according to form whether they fancy their chances or not. They are fabulous cricketers,” said Pietersen in an interview with news agency IANS.

Pietersen also observed that since there was not much of a gap between IPL 2024 and next year’s T20 World Cup, it might serve as a swansong for a couple of players. “IPL form is going to go a long way because the final of the IPL and T20 World Cup 2024 wouldn’t have much gap in between. It might be a swansong for a couple of them,” he added.

As per few reports, Virat Kohli has conveyed to the BCCI that he will not be available in white-ball matches for a while. This decision effectively rules him out from the white-ball segment of India’s upcoming tour of South Africa as well as the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan in January.

At the same time, it is not certain if Rohit Sharma will be available for the white-ball segment of the South Africa tour.

Neither Rohit or Kohli have been part of India’s T20 side since the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. A young Indian side is currently involved in a T20I series against Australia and their performance should give the selectors plenty of confidence.

India vs Australia: 13-14 runs an over is gettable, says Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj Gaikwad spoke about the suitable conditions during the third T20I between India and Australia in Guwahati on Tuesday. Having slammed his maiden international century, Gaikwad was pleased with his individual effort even though it went in vain.

Gaikwad scored 123 runs from 57 balls to become the fifth Indian opener to hit a century in a T20I contest. However, it didn’t garner the desired outcome with Australia getting the job done in thrilling fashion on the final ball. Glenn Maxwell scored a century of his own to seal the victory for Australia.

India posted 222/3 on the scoreboard which handed Australia a hefty total to chase. Maxwell walked out to bat at No.4 with Australia losing their third wicket on 68 runs. At that stage, they still required 155 runs inside 13.4 overs to keep the series alive. Maxwell responded with Australia’s joint-fastest century in T20Is, needing 47 balls for a ton, to script a sensational fightback.

“I think Maxi batted really well, and to win from a situation where they needed 100 from seven, seven-and-a-half overs, and then 50 from three overs, it was a creditable innings from him.”

“Our bowlers tried executing what they had in their control, and the dew was making the ball slip, so it was tough for the bowlers as well. Even though we scored 230 in the last game, in between we felt the match will go till the last over, so with this kind of dew, these totals are bound to happen and bound to be chased.

“I don’t think death bowling is a concern. In these conditions, 12 runs an over, and even 13-14 runs an over is gettable. Even in the first game, we saw how easily we managed to chase 210. The conditions are slightly tougher for them so we have to accept that and move on.

Gaikwad spoke about his individual batting where he took twenty-odd balls to understand the surface before letting fly.

“Initially I thought it was a bit tacky, the ball was stopping a little, and there was some movement in the air and off the pitch. The first two-three overs, the wicket was like that, and we lost two wickets in one over. It was important to stitch a partnership but after 7-8 overs the wicket got better.”

“You cannot tend to lose three wickets in the powerplay. Knowing that Surya was there [and] he will play his shots, my plan and the communication was simple – that I will bat for a short span of time and [then] take the innings on.”

India lead the five-match series 2-1. The fourth T20I will be played in Raipur on Friday before the final fixture on Sunday in Bengaluru.

India vs Australia 3rd T20: Three storylines to follow at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati

India will be looking to clinch the T20I series with a win over Australia in the third match on Tuesday. With India leading 2-0, a victory at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Sunday will give the Men in Blue an unassailable 3-0 in the five-match series. While in the first match at Visakhapatnam, India chased down a record target of 209 against the 2023 World Cup winners Australia, at Thiruvananthapuram, they scored 235 batting first and registered a 44-run victory.

Now from the South, the Indian bandwagon has moved to the North East where Australia face a do-or-die battle. In such a scenario, we can expect nothing less than a thrilling contest and here we list out three things to look forward to in the match.

Run fest to continue

Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Assam is getting ready to host its third T20I but if the match that took place here in 2022 is anything to go by, we should expect another high-scoring match. The two games so far in the series have witnessed run fests and a flat track is expected in Guwahati as well. In 2022 India played South Africa in Guwahati in which both teams scored over 220 runs with Men in Blue winning by 16 runs.

What is Tilak Varma’s role?

Tilak Varma impressed on his debut during the West Indies tour but in two matches so far he hasn’t done a lot to garner attention. At No. 5 in the first match, he scored 12 off 10 balls and in match 2 he was sent at No. 6, after Rinku Singh. He scored seven off two balls in Thiruvananthapuram. Now the question is what is his role in the team?

Is he a No. 5 batter? Is he a No. 6? Is he a floater in the middle order?

Tilak, meanwhile, would want to get some more time in the middle to get to a big score and strengthen his case. But for that, he would ideally need a promotion in the batting order, but that looks highly unlikely at the moment.

Also, Shreyas Iyer will be back for the next game. This means it could be Tilak’s last match in the series.

Travis Head to return?

World Cup winners Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zamap were back in second T20 but opener Travis Head didn’t. There’s a strong possibility Head could return to replace Steve Smith who reportedly has left for home along with Adam Zampa. Australia need strong starts in high-scoring games and Head is capable of providing exactly that. Otherwise, there’s no point having Head in the squad immediately after winning the World Cup.

IPL 2024 Auction: Hardik Pandya returns to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans

And it is official! Hardik Pandya has returned to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans after two seasons with GT in the Indian Premier League. Pandya spent seven years with MI before moving to GT at the formation of the new IPL franchise.

In two years in Ahmedabad, Pandya led the side to a title (2022) and a runners-up finish last season. In the final, GT, under Pandya’s leadership, lost the title clash to Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Pandya won four titles with Mumbai Indians after joining the team in 2015. He will now return to Wankhede Stadium to play alongside Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan.

Nita Ambani (L), co-owner of the Mumbai Indians franchise, with Hardik Pandya (R). Image: Mumbai Indians

Speaking about the move, Mrs. Nita Ambani said, “We are thrilled to welcome Hardik back home! It’s a heartwarming reunion with our Mumbai Indians family! From being a young scouted talent of Mumbai Indians to now being a team India star, Hardik has come a long way and we’re excited for what the future holds for him and Mumbai Indians!”

Mr. Akash Ambani said, “Seeing Hardik back at Mumbai Indians makes me very happy. It is a happy homecoming. He provides great balance to any team he plays. Hardik’s first stint with the MI family was hugely successful, and we hope he achieves even more success in his second stint.”

As a consequence of the blockbuster trade, Shubman Gill has been elevated to the role of Gujarat Titans captain. Meanwhile, to bring Pandya back, Mumbai Indians released Cameron Green who has joined Royal Challengers Bangalore.

An IPL statement read: “Gujarat Titans’ (GT) captain, Hardik Pandya, is set to move back to his first franchise, Mumbai Indians, following a trade between the two franchises. The all-rounder spent two momentous years with GT, spearheading their campaign with aplomb.”

“In GT’s debut season in 2022, Hardik ensured a fairytale start, with the team lifting the coveted trophy, while they finished runners-up in their second season after a last-ball defeat in a thrilling final earlier this year.”

“In a separate trade, MI all-rounder Cameron Green has been traded to Royal Challengers Bangalore. Green, who was bought for a whopping ₹17,50,00,000 at the auction last December, featured in 16 matches. The Australian had an impressive start to the IPL, hitting an unbeaten century and two half-centuries while also taking six wickets. Both trades have been carried out as per the existing player fees.”

Mohammed Shami saves road accident victim in Nainital; WATCH video

Fresh from his exploits in the ODI World Cup where he emerged as the highest wicket-taker for the hosts, India’s pace ace Mohammed Shami turned a do-gooder on Saturday after he rescued a person, who met with an accident in Nainital. The speedster took to his official Instagram account to share a video of the rescue. The 33-year-old tagged his post with a caption informing that the person was driving through a hilly road in Nainital when his car skidded off and rolled down a slope.

The pacer added that since his car was tailing the vehicle that met with the accident, he, along with other occupants in his car, could rush to the person’s rescue and pull him out of the vehicle.

“He’s so lucky, god gave him 2nd life. His car fell off a hill road near Nanital just in front of mine. We took him out very safely,” Shami wrote on Instagram.

The pacer, who has been rested for the ongoing five-match T20I series against Australia, is likely to be picked for the South Africa tour.

In a remarkable campaign that ended in the disappointment of the hosts finishing runners-up behind champions Australia, Shami took 24 wickets.

The hosts, who went unbeaten in 10 matches preceding the final, came unstuck in the championship clash against the ‘Baggy Greens’.

His wickets came in just seven matches at an average of 10.70 and a strike rate of 12.20, with the best being 7/57 against New Zealand in the semi-final.

He picked up three five-fors in the tournament, breaking several bowling records.

In the final, India struggled on a tough batting surface after Australia elected to field first.

Laboured fifties from KL Rahul (66) and Virat Kohli (54) took India to 240 for the loss of all 10 wickets in their 50 overs.

Chasing 241, Travis Head (137) and Marnus Labuschagne (58*) guided Australia to their sixth WC title at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

India vs Australia: Amit Mishra wants wants Men in Blue to stick with the winning XI

Looking ahead to India’s second T20I against Australia in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday evening, JioCinema experts Amit Mishra and Abhishek Nayar spoke of their expectations from the Indian team.

Excerpts:

On India’s playing XI for the 2nd T20I

Amit Mishra: “In the 1st T20I, all the players were playing after a long time, so I think they should be given one more match before the management thinks about making any change in the XI. Also, there was nothing for the spinners in the pitch in Visakhapatnam. They should continue playing the winning XI.”

On Yashasvi Jaiswal’s aggressive approach

Abhishek Nayar: “See, this is his strength. He’s not a player who takes too much time to settle in. I think he’s been given the role to play with freedom. He plays in the same way for Mumbai in domestic cricket and Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. If you are a player who is instinctively aggressive, then you should remain that way.”

On Suryakumar Yadav’s batting and captaincy

Amit Mishra: “He played a captain’s knock in the 1st T20I. He played to his strengths and did not make any change to his approach. The pressure of captaincy was visible when India were bowling, but he was really calm when he came to bat. He should continue maintaining the same approach.”

Kapil Dev shares advice for heartbroken Indian cricket team after World Cup loss

Kapil Dev expressed his disappointment in India’s heartbreaking loss in the World Cup final against Australia on Sunday. Kapil, who led India to 1983 World Cup triumph, expressed delight with the way team performed for 10 matches before being usurped by Australia in the final.

India were the dominant side throughout the World Cup – winning nine league stage matches and the semi-final against New Zealand. At the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, in the final, India scored just 240 runs. Australia, in reply, got to the target with six wickets in hand and 42 balls remaining.

India’s latest disappointment extended the team’s drought in ICC tournaments. The last time India won a big-ticket ICC tournament was the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Dev shared how the current Indian cricket team can recover from the latest loss and move on.

“Remember that you have to move on in life. Another thing I’ve learnt over a period of time is to never talk about your time. We have moved on. We are not good enough. The young people are much better than us. The only thing we have – we have experience to guide them in the right direction. They are far better, but we can guide them better, that’s all,” Kapil was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

Kapil Dev suggested that the Australian team played better in the final and everyone should respect that.

“Today’s cricketers, sorry they couldn’t win the World Cup, but they played well. I know in our mind, winning is everything. But the way of play is more important. Other people had also come here to play. Other people played better (on the) last day. We should respect that. I’m disappointed and disheartened that they played so well and yet they couldn’t win the trophy. But (it) doesn’t matter. Let’s hope what we didn’t understand this time, we’ll learn and do it better. That’s the way we are,” said the former India captain.

'A surreal feeling': Dinesh Karthik reveals how Abhishek Nayar improved Rinku Singh's finishing skills

After Rinku Singh showed tremendous calm and temperament to win the first T20I match against Australia, India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik shed light on how Kolkata Knight Riders assistant coach Abhishek Nayar shaped the career of the left-handed batter.

It should be mentioned that the relationship between Abhishek Nayar and Rinku Singh dates back to 2018 when they both met at Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL). As per Karthik, it was during this time, that Abhishek recognised Rinku’s potential and had an unwavering belief that the young talent was destined for significant achievements.

IND vs AUS: Why Rinku Singh’s last-ball six wasn’t counted?

Abhishek Nayar understood that Rinku Singh needed to be strong mentally. Abhishek started working on it and also focused on improving Rinku’s skills in handling pressure situations, particularly during the death overs.

“Nayar always saw the potential in Rinku, he kept telling me, it was only a matter of time before he did something really special. Coming from a small town in Aligarh, all he needed was to think big, and I think that shift in mindset was what Nayar worked with Rinku majorly about apart from fine-tuning his death-hitting skills,” Karthik wrote on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, sharing an image of Abhishek hugging Rinku following the conclusion of the first T20I between India and Australia yesterday.

Dinesh Karthik also spoke about the great bonding between Abhishek Nayar and Rinku Singh and how this trust played a big part in the latter’s development. Even during a phase of injury, Abhishek convinced KKR CEO Venky Mysore to retain Rinku as part of the team, enabling him to travel and stay with the franchise.

After the IPL, Rinku Singh spent several months at Abhishek Nayar’s residence for rehabilitation, focusing extensively on honing his batting skills.

IND vs AUS: India’s win after World Cup final defeat sparks meme fest

Dinesh Karthik said that looking at this photo, he sensed that Abhishek Nayar had grown as a coach and now, he can share the joy he experienced for Rinku Singh with the entire world.

“Must be a surreal feeling seeing one of your students do well at a world stage and also be lucky enough to watch it live as a broadcaster and call the moment,” Karthik added in his social media post.

Rinku Singh played a crucial unbeaten knock of 22 off 14 balls to earn a thrilling two-wicket win for India against Australia in the first T20I last night. Hosts India scored the winning runs with one ball to spare.

Meet Arnold Dix, Aus expert roped in for Uttarkashi tunnel rescue

It’s Day 13 and there is still no sign of relief for the 41 labourers stranded inside the two-kilometre-built portion of the under-construction Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi following a landslide.

Five agencies, namely ONGC, SJVNL, RVNL, NHIDCL, and THDCL, are collaborating on the rescue operation, which has encountered a series of setbacks in recent days.

Arnold Dix, the Australian president of the 79-nation International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association in Switzerland, is among the experts being consulted by rescuers.

While speaking to PTI on 22 November, he said, “I just want 41 men home to their families and I don’t want any of you hurt. My feeling is we are going to get that. My feeling is we are going to get 41 men home and none of you guys hurt as well.”

“I am proud that Australia’s professor Arnold Dix is providing important technical support on the ground to help evacuate the trapped workers,” Australian High Commissioner to India Phillip Green, who is closely watching the developments, told The Hindu.

Here’s all we know about the expert.

Who is professor Arnold Dix?

Arnold Dix is widely recognised as the world’s leading expert on underground tunnelling.

As per his LinkedIn profile, he completed his schooling from Haileybury in the United Kingdom and graduated from Australia’s Monash University in combined geotechnical and engineering sciences with legal professional and corporate law.

His ability to effectively bridge the gap between the legal and technical aspects of an issue, risk assessment, or disagreement is one of his strongest suit.

Prof Dix has been honoured with numerous accolades, reflecting his significant contributions to tunnel safety worldwide. PTI

Prof Dix specialises in underground and transportation infrastructure – from construction risk to more technical issues associated with actual safety performance from an operational safety perspective, according to Victorian Bar. He also provides advice on risks associated with underground construction.

His career over the three decades has seen a unique hybrid of engineering, geology, law and risk management matters.

In addition to his legal work as a barrister, he can be engaged as an investigator, expert, consultant and mediator.

He is active on all continents, being a member of the specialist Underground Works Chambers, the Victorian Bar, the British Institute of Investigators, and is also a visiting professor at engineering (tunnels) at Tokyo City University.

Prof Dix has been honoured with numerous accolades, reflecting his significant contributions to tunnel safety worldwide. In 2011, he received the Alan Neyland Australasian Tunnelling Society bi-annual award for excellence in tunnelling, specifically in tunnel fire safety. More recently, in 2022, he was honoured with a Committee Service Award by the National Fire Protection Associated of the US.

Arnold Dix, the Australian president of the 79-nation International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association in Switzerland, is among the experts being consulted by rescuers. PTI

His role in the rescue operation

Prof Dix has been camped at Silkayara since 20 November to assist rescuers who are struggling to break through the fragile mountainside in an attempt to dig further tunnels for the men trapped inside.

Following the tunnel collapse, Prof Dix emphasised the significance of thorough planning and safety, noting that while the current situation appears good, it still needs to be carefully evaluated in order to prevent additional dangers.

His approach emphasises the importance of carefully examining and analysing every facet of these crucial processes.

“Because we are up in the Himalayas, and the Himalayas are technically a very fresh mountain range, which means they’re falling apart,” he told the Australian Broadcast Corporation yesterday, after rescue efforts hit another setback, hitting steel girders as they tried pushing in the last pipe that would act as an escape passage.

He added, “That means when you put a tunnel through, you’ve constantly got this risk that there’s going to be a collapse and so as engineers you’re fighting that risk.”

While speaking to news agency PTI, Prof Dix said “We were hoping to see the workers this time yesterday, then we were hoping to see them this morning and then this afternoon. But, it looks like the mountain had different ideas. We have had to pause the auger (machine) operation at the moment and some repairs are being done to the machine. We are probably going to enter the next phase where we consider other option.

Latest update on the rescue efforts

Drilling through the rubble to prepare an escape route for the 41 workers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel was set to resume on Friday morning, an official said.

Former advisor to the prime minister’s office Bhaskar Khulbe said the operation might successfully be completed by Friday evening if everything went well, according to PTI.

Citing the data scanned by a ground penetrating radar, there is no metallic obstruction up to five metres beyond the 46 metre point through the rubble.

The drilling machine’s platform has been revamped and strengthened. Boring through the rubble with auger is likely to resume by 11.30 am, Khulbe told reporters at Silkyara.

“We have 12-14 metres more to go. And I hope if all goes well we might conclude the operation by Friday evening,” he said.

'Australia and Pat Cummins deceived me': How Australia stunned R Ashwin and India in World Cup final

Ravichandran Ashwin, who was part of the Team India squad in the 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup, praised Australia for winning the final against the Men in Blue and said that the record-extending sixth title for the Aussies was a result of them being tactically brilliant in the summit clash which took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Ashwin said that he expected Australia to follow their history and bat first in the final, but they stunned everyone with their decision. he added that the toss decision by Australia was based on the analysis of the black soil of the pitch which gets better to bat on in the evening.

“Let me make it clear, Australia did not win because of destiny or luck. They were tactically outstanding in the final. I watched their performance in the final with absolute fascination,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. “Australia and Pat Cummins deceived me. I thought Australia would bat first if they win the toss because, historically, it’s an Aussie thing to ‘win the toss and bat’. The wicket used for the final was not Ahmedabad soil, it was rather from Odisha. It was the kind of wicket that would not disintegrate too much.

“I was looking at the pitch during the mid-innings and that’s when I bumped into George Bailey, Australia’s chairman of selectors. I questioned him curiously why Australia didn’t opt to bat, for which he replied that they opted to bowl first since this was a black soil wicket, which usually gets better to bat on in the evening.

“He said that the South Africa game in Lucknow, which was played on red soil, helped Australia realize that while it’s better to bat first on red-soil surfaces, it’s always better to chase on black soil surfaces since the ball skids on well when the dew sets in.”

Ashwin credited Australia for carrying an injured Travis Head into the squad for the first half of the World Cup. Head would go on to put in player of the match performances in the semi-final and final.

“99/100 times, teams would refuse to carry a player that’s injured in order to have a full 15-member squad at their disposal. But Australia were adamant that they’ll carry Head, even if he was not fit, because they had enormous faith in his abilities. By backing Head even when he was not fit, Australia sent a clear message to everyone: ‘we are backing our players’.

“All things considered, Australia’s extraordinary values and the belief they had in their players helped them win the World Cup,” he said.

Ashwin was also impressed with Australian skipper Pat Cummins’ bowling in the final which was done with an off-spinner’s field.

“What Pat Cummins did with the ball was also nothing short of extraordinary. To not have a mid-off, have a 4-5 field and bowl with such accuracy was remarkable,” Ashwin said.

“I’ve never seen a fast bowler bowl to an off-spinner’s field and execute so perfectly, not bowling a single overpitched delivery. It was a tactical masterclass. Australia had us there. They were deserved winners.”

Ashwin only played one match in the World Cup which was the opener against Australia in Chennai. The off-spinner said he was surprised he only played one match, besides adding that India had a “rock solid run” despite losing the final.

“I honestly never thought my World Cup memories would end with the Australia game in Chepauk. I was bowling well and I was in good rhythm,” Ashwin said.

“It was a disappointing end as our dreams got shattered, but India had a rock solid run. We played outstanding cricket throughout the World Cup.”

KL Rahul's emotional post four days after World Cup final defeat: 'Still hurts'

After a heartbreaking defeat in the Cricket World Cup final 2023, Team India is ready to move on with a T20I series against Australia, but it’s going to take some time for the players including KL Rahul. India lost to Australia in the mega final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Expressing his feelings on social media, Team India vice-captain and wicketkeeper-batter Rahul, who had a big role in pushing Men in Blue into the final, made a post with the caption “still hurts” and added a heartbreak emoji to it.

The cricketer received a lot of support on X (formerly Twitter) over his post with fans praising him for his efforts and wishing him the best for the future.

India had entered the World Cup final with a 10-match winning streak and were seen as the favourites it was Australia who came out on the top.

Despite being a part-time keeper, Rahul was exceptional behind the stumps with his wicket-keeping and also handled India’s DRS review duties. He also scored 452 runs in 11 matches at an average of 75 to finish as the eighth-highest run-getter.

In the final, Rahul made a gritty 66 on a spinning track but failed to convert it into a big score as the hosts were bowled out for 240. Australia’s Travis Head slammed 137 in reply as they won a record-extending sixth World Cup title.

Marlon Samuels given six-year ban from all cricket for breaching anti-corruption code

Marlon Samuels, former West Indies batter, was handed a six-year ban from all forms of cricket on Thursday. The 42-year-old was banned for breaching the Emirates Cricket Board’s anti-corruption code. Samuels, who played 71 Tests, 207 ODIs and 67 T20Is, was charged by the International Cricket Council (in its capacity as the Designated Anti-Corruption Official of the Emirates board) on four counts in September 2021.

He was found guilty by the Tribunal in August and his ban began on November 11. The charges relate to the Abu Dhabi T10 league in 2019.

The ICC said on Thursday that the former all-rounder was guilty of “failing to disclose to the Designated Anti-Corruption Official, the receipt of any gift, payment, hospitality or other benefit that was made or given in circumstances that could bring the Participant or the sport of cricket into disrepute.

“He was also guilty of “failing to disclose to the Designated Anti-Corruption Official receipt of hospitality with a value of US $750 or more. Failing to cooperate with the Designated Anti-Corruption Official’s investigation.” “Obstructing or delaying the Designated Anti-Corruption Official’s investigation by concealing information that may have been relevant to the investigation,” the ICC said in a statement.

Alex Marshall, the ICC General Manager, HR and Integrity Unit, said the ban on Samuels will act as a strong deterrent.

“Samuels played international cricket for close to two decades, during which he participated in numerous anti-corruption sessions and knew exactly what his obligations were under the Anti-Corruption Codes.

“Though he is retired now, Mr Samuels was a participant when the offences were committed. The ban of six years will act as a strong deterrent to any participant who intends to break the rules,” said Marshall. Samuels top-scored for the West Indies in the T20 World Cup final in 2012 and 2016. He made more than 11000 runs in international cricket. He was banned for two years after being found guilty of “receiving money, or benefit or other reward that could bring him or the game of cricket into disrepute” in May, 2008.

He last played for the West Indies in 2018 and announced his retirement in 2020.

Afghanistan to tour India for T20I series in January

India will play host to Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series in January. It will be the first time they will meet in a multi-match white-ball series, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed on Tuesday.

The series will get underway on 11 January in Mohali and will then move to Indore (14 January). It will conclude in Bengaluru on 17 January.

The series is sandwiched between India’s tour of South Africa – three T20Is, three ODIs and two Tests – and the five match series against England that begins in early February.

India and Afghanistan have played five T20 matches overall. Men in Blue have won four of those while their latest, at the Asian Games, ended without a result. India, however, were determined to be the winners on account of a better seeding.

Afghanistan, considered the minnows of world cricket, caused quite the stir at the recently concluded ODI World Cup.

Afghans picked up four wins but missed out on qualifying for the next stage of the tournament. They beat England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Netherlands while running Australia close.

The team’s account during the extravaganza in India was however good enough for them to book a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

India vs Afghanistan T20 series schedule

1st T20: on 11 January in Mohali

2nd T20: on 14 January in Indore

3rd T20: on 17 January in Bengaluru

'Sudhar jao yaar': Mohammed Shami laughs off bizarre claims by former Pakistan players

Mohammed Shami took down former Pakistan player Hasan Raza who claimed India used a different set of balls at the World Cup to gain an advantage. He found it hard to believe that a former player, who had played at the highest level of the game, could come up with such ridiculous claims.

Raza, on a Pakistan television show, claimed that the International Cricket Council (ICC) gave a different set of balls to ensure India capitalised more on the tournament’s conditions and pitches compared to other teams.

Shami, who came into the side after an injury to Hardik Pandya, took a fifer against New Zealand in Dharamsala to get things underway. He then picked up a four-wicket haul and a five-wicket haul in the next three matches. The pacer ended with 24 wickets in seven matches, including three five-wicket hauls. In the semi-final against New Zealand, Shami recorded the best ODI bowling figures by an Indian after claiming seven wickets.

“In their mind, they think ‘we (our pacers) are the best’. I think the best are the players who perform at the right time. But you are trying to create controversy, keep on saying stuff that ‘ball is looking in a different colour, you are getting a different company’s balls, ICC has given you a different set of balls’. Sudhar jao yaar (Mend your ways),” Shami said in an interview with Puma.

Former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram refuted the allegations, and he went on to explain how match balls are allocated to teams and how bowlers can select them from a designated set carried on to the field by officials.

“In an interview, Wasim bhai (Wasim Akram) spoke about the process and explained how bowlers have the liberty to choose them. Even after such clarification? I can still understand if someone who hasn’t played the game at this level makes such comments. But as an ex-player, if you come up with these things, people will dismiss it with laughter,” he went on to add.

World Cup 2023: Thrills, shockers cannot erase future ODI concerns

The ODI World Cup ended on Sunday with Australia doing what they do. India were on the other end of the result. The stadium had over 92,000 people and over five-crore had tuned in on digital streaming at one point. To say the country wasn’t hooked would be an understatement. The six-week tournament witnessed some gripping matches, but maybe not enough. Afghanistan captivated everyone’s imagination despite their meagre means. New Zealand and South Africa played some incredible cricket to get to the semi-finals. Records were set for stadium attendance and digital broadcast viewership. Yet, one can’t help but feel – where now for ODI cricket?

The tournament started with question marks over its future and it persisted with dull contests for the most part of the 10-team tournament. The format didn’t quite help matters either. One could argue that the current format is rigged to favour the big teams. Even if the smaller teams pull off a couple of surprise wins, as Afghanistan did, there is stiff chance of them going forward. The 48 matches are divided into 45 league matches and just three knockout matches. If the objective is to draw continued eyeballs, the aim should be to have plenty of matches with something riding on them. Surely it is a concept ICC is aware of when they introduced the World Test Championship cycle with a final at the end of it.

Netherlands beat South Africa and it didn’t cause quite a stir. Australia lost two matches at the start of the tournament, New Zealand went down in four straight games and yet went through. All that changed, in the end, was the order of their progression towards the semi-finals.

By comparison, FIFA World Cup last year in Qatar had three group stage matches followed by knockouts. One could argue against that format too and football is guilty of overdoing it with number of teams. But if there was an Argentina recovering from a Saudi Arabia defeat to end their trophy drought. There was the also the monumental high of Morocco and Japan outperforming the likes of Belgium and Germany.

Stepping away from the format issue, the 50-over format does find the perfect balance between Tests and T20s. Supporters of Test cricket argue it offers strategic cricket and ‘real test’ of a cricketer over the course of five days. A test of mind and physical. T20, in comparison, offers a smash-and-grab opportunity with a quick result. ODI is the one sits in between. There is enough time for a team to make a comeback while offering the inevitability of an outcome in a single day.

T20 does produce its share of drama and magic while filling up the coffers of national boards, as is evident with the continued rise of the Indian Premier League and birth of numerous T20 competitions across the planet. But it is rarely able to offer them on a regular basis and is unable to produce clashes that remain etched in memory.

The ability to stage an epic comeback was most evident in Australia’s thrilling win over Afghanistan. On the brink of defeat, Australia were reduced to 91/7 with a massive 292 runs to get. On came Glenn Maxwell to score an incredible double century to secure a three-wicket win.

Pat Cummins, who was stationed at the other end of Maxwell’s smashing knock at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, admitted to having mixed emotions after leading Australia to a record-extending sixth World Cup title.

“It’s hard to say. Maybe because we won, but I did fall in love with ODI again this World Cup,” said fast bowler Cummins, who took a superb 2-34 from his maximum 10 overs as Australia held India to a modest total of 240 all out.

A post shared by ICC (@icc)

The scenario of needing a comeback played out once again in the final but not as dramatically. Travis Head scored 137 runs from 120 balls from a point when Australia were 47/3 and had lost the top three batters rather meekly.

“I think the scenario where every game really matters, it does make it a bit different to just a bilateral (ODI),” said Cummins.

Australia have a rich history at the World Cup winning six in ODI format and one in T20s. It all began with a run to the final in 1975 where they lost to West Indies. The first trophy arrived in 1987 and more have come in 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015. “The World Cup’s got such rich history, I’m sure it’s going to be around for a long time,” said the 30-year-old Cummins. “There’s so many wonderful games, so many wonderful stories within this last couple of months. So, I think there’s definitely a place (for it).”

But there’s still time between now and the next edition in South Africa in 2027. A regime change could play a part too with incoming MCC president Mark Nicholas calling for all ODIs between World Cups to be scrapped.

“We believe strongly that ODIs should be World Cups only,” he told ESPNcricinfo.

“They’re not filling grounds in a lot of countries. And there is a power at the moment to T20 cricket that is almost supernatural.”

He added: “In a free market, the most money wins.”

If things do go the way he suggests — without bilateral ODIs between tournaments such as World Cup and Champions Trophy — how will those teams maintain their standard or become even better at 50-over cricket? Additionally, it takes away the lure to play 50-over cricket for the Associate teams. With the sport making it to the Olympics in the shortest format, the move towards a more T20 friendly calendar, including the leagues, appears inevitable.

India vs Australia: Chahal, Samson’s omissions raise eyebrows as Men in Blue begin road to another ICC event

It hasn’t even been 48 hours since Pat Cummins and company lifted the World Cup for a record-extending sixth time after outclassing India in the final in Ahmedabad, and we’re already shifting our attention to another meeting between these two sides.

Less than a week after the suffering yet another heartbreak in an ICC event, Team India will be hosting Australia in a five-match T20I series starting Thursday in Visakhapatnam.

Australia had already announced their squad for the series well in advance on 28 October. India, on the other hand, took their sweet time and made it official on Monday evening, less than three days before the two sides face off at the ACA-VDCA Stadium.

The difference between the two sides however, is that while the Matthew Wade-led Australian squad will have a number of World Cup winners in their midst, India have decided to rest a majority of their senior players and tasked middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav with captaining the side.

Surya happens had recently been elevated to vice-captaincy after a consistent run and that responsibility was going to fall on him or on Ruturaj Gaikwad with all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who has been India’s unofficial T20I skipper since the conclusion of last year’s T20 World Cup, nursing an ankle injury.

The squad was expected to largely comprise players who are either viewed as T20I specialists or those on the fringes of selection after having impressed in the domestic circuit or in the Indian Premier League, and even in the recent Asian Games.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee would have been reluctant to include too many players from a hectic World Cup campaign, with SKY and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan the only two individuals to have made an appearance in the tournament, the former playing seven matches including the final.

There were however, a couple of notable omissions from India’s squad for the series that will have raised many an eyebrow.

End of the road for Yuzi?

There two two major names missing from India’s squad for the Australia T20Is — leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson.

Neither player had been included in the World Cup squad, with Chahal’s omission from the mega event being seen by some as a major snub, and the fact that neither will be taking part in the upcoming series despite having not represented India since August.

Both senior players had been offered a handful of chances this year; Samson was part of the tour of the Caribbean and the United States where he played both the ODIs as well as the T20Is. Chahal was part of that tour, but his appearances were limited to the T20I series, which India ended up losing 2-3.

Samson was also part of the tour of Ireland, where pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna had returned to action after long injury layoffs and the Men in Blue had won the three-match series 2-0. Chahal, meanwhile, had been part of the home season before the Indian Premier League, playing both T20Is and ODIs against Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

Sanju Samson struck two fours and four sixes during his 41-ball 51 in the third ODI against West Indies in Tarouba on Tuesday, 1 August. AP

Neither player, however, had set the stage on fire with their performances the way Mohammed Shami did with his five-for against New Zealand in the group match of the World Cup in Dharamsala. And given the amount of pressure that these two face and the scrutiny that their performances come under, a Shami-like performance is what they would have had to produce to both silence their critics and stay in contention for next year’s T20 World Cup.

Samson’s inclusion might have been a little trickier for the selectors given they already have three wicketkeepers in the squad — Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Jitesh Sharma. Gaikwad, who led India to a gold medal on Asian Games debut in Hangzhou a little over a month ago, has been named SKY’s deputy and is expected to lead in his stead for a couple of matches. And Jitesh stellar performances in this year’s IPL for Punjab Kings will have impressed the selectors enough to warrant him a longer run with the gloves.

Samson did have his moments with the bat this year, especially during his a 41-ball 51 in an ODI against the West Indies and his 29-ball 40 against Ireland in the second T20I. As has been the case with Samson over the years, he has been a giant in the IPL as captain of the Rajasthan Royals but simply hasn’t achieved that level of consistency when it comes to donning the blue jersey. And with the sudden abundance of wicketkeeper-batters, he was always going to find it tough to get picked.

But what of Chahal though? India have named three frontline spin options in off-spinner Washington Sundar, left-arm orthodox spinner Axar Patel and leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, and only one of them is a wrist spinner. The competition for slots in Chahal’s case isn’t as steep as it is for Samson, and he was in direct competition with Bishnoi for a place in this squad.

Agarkar and Co have gone with the 23-year-old, and one wonders if the powers that be have one eye on the future and have decided to move on from an individual who at one point was indispensable and part of the famous ‘Kul-Cha’ spin pairing.

Chahal had a couple of decent outings against New Zealand, including a haul of 2-1-4-2 in the Lucknow T20I. He had also been impressive in the first two matches of the T20I series against the West Indies, collecting 2/24 and 2/19 respectively, the second one with an economy under 7.

Like Samson, Chahal could not build on those performances in the remainder of the series, collecting just one more wicket in the next three outings and finishing with an average and economy of 32.60 and 9.05. For an individual fighting for his place in the Indian team, those numbers are disastrous.

Chahal had been regaining some of that form with in the domestic circuits, collecting nine wickets in his two appearances for Kent in the County Championship as well as in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where the Haryana bowler collected 11 wickets at 12.09 in seven outings. The numbers, however, weren’t extraordinary enough to impress the selectors though.

Chahal reacted to the snub with a cryptic post on X, formerly known as Twitter, containing nothing but a smiling emoji. He had posted something similar after being overlooked for the World Cup squad.

Like Kane Williamson, who has now made it a habit to react to heartbreaks with a smile on his face, the leg-spinner has little option but to carry on and take the snub on the chin. His chances of making it to boarding the flight to the Caribbean next year look tough at the moment. But with a series of consistent performances over the next few months and making the most of whatever opportunities land his way, he could make it a reality and bury this disappointment for good.

World Cup Final: Harbhajan Singh not pleased with ‘tinkered’ Ahmedabad pitch

India were the best side over the course of 10 matches and showed an unparalleled dominance, excelling in both batting and bowling. The prospect of clinching a third World Cup title seemed almost certain to many. However, in the final match, India faltered. Many attributed it to Australia’s innate prowess in crunch matches — they were the most dominant force in World Cup history and now clinched their sixth World Cup title.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

A pivotal factor in Australia’s victory on Sunday can be traced back to the beginning of the match. Pat Cummins, after winning the toss, elected to bowl first and his bowlers stepped up and restricted India to just 240 runs on a slow and sluggish track.

There were reports that suggested that it was the Indian management that opted for a slow wicket at the Narendra Modi Stadium for the grand final. Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh, speaking to India Today, expressed shock at the decision, believing that a true and quick track would have allowed India’s in-form batting lineup to make a difference in the game.

It’s worth noting that the same Ahmedabad track saw IPL franchise Gujarat Titans amass over 200 runs on five occasions in the last season, including 233 runs in the playoffs and 214 in the final.

Harbhajan said that India would have had an advantage if there was no tinkering with the pitch. “I spoke to a couple of my Aussie friends who I played with in my era. And all of them, they said, India is just top side, and it will be India all the way, But, of course, the Australian team they came out with the plan, they executed well, and they played fantastic cricket. And, of course, if the wicket was on slightly on a better side, one with the ball coming nicely onto the bat, Uh, you know, I think, we would have enjoyed more,” he said.

Travis Head was the star with the bat and he led Australia’s charge in the chase. The conditions improved as the match progressed and this allowed the batters to time their strokes far better.

Footage shows how pitch invader escaped security during World Cup final - WATCH

The much-anticipated ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final between India and Australia in Ahmedabad had to be paused after a pitch invader, identified as Wen Johnson from Australia, managed to evade security, jumped the boundary rope and raced onto the field and even approached Virat Kohli. He was surrounded by security officials from all sides and was taken off the field.

This is not the first time Johnson has tried to get attention by racing on to the field during live sporting events.

In August, he disrupted the Women’s World Cup football final between England and Spain. Back then he was wearing a ‘Free Ukraine’ T-shirt with ‘stop Putler’ printed on it. On that occasion, his actions caused a delay in the first half of the Women’s World Cup final.

In the India vs Australia match on Sunday, Johnson, clad in red shorts and a white t-shirt ran on to the field with the messages ‘Stop bombing Palestine’ on the front and ‘Free Palestine’ on the back, along with a face mask in Palestine’s colors.

Johnson is an Australian TikToker who is called Pyjama Man on Instagram. As per a Crime Branch release, he engages in such stunts for publicity, associating himself with current international issues to gain fame.

MORE | Who is the pitch invader at India-Aus final?

The release also revealed that Johnson’s father has Chinese origins, his mother from the Philippines, and he resides in Sydney while working for a solar panel firm.

When he entered the stadium in the first innings, Johnson wore the blue jersey of the Indian team, with a white t-shirt carrying the ‘Free Palestine’ message beneath it. And as soon as he skirted the security officials, he removed the jersey before running towards Kohli. His stunt has resulted in legal consequences, as a Gandhinagar court on Monday remanded him to one-day police custody.

Will Rahul Dravid continue as India head coach after World Cup? Batting legend doesn't give direct answer

Both the Indian cricket team and their millions of fans were left heartbroken yet again after the Men in Blue fell short in yet another ICC event with a six-wicket defeat against Australia in the World Cup final on Sunday.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

While a majority of fans would still be reeling from the disappointment of the defeat that will have worsened the Monday blues, few would have noticed the fact that the position of head coach of the India men’s cricket team is up for grabs once again.

Former India captain and batting icon Rahul Dravid’s tenure in that role officially came to an end a day after India’s runner-up finish in the 13th edition of the ICC’s showpiece event on Sunday, and it’s not known whether the BCCI will be renewing his contract or not.

Dravid was also quizzed on the same by a couple of reporters during the post-match press conference, but he shied away from giving a direct answer on his future as head coach.

“I haven’t thought about it. I’ve just come off a game. I had no time to think about this and no time to reflect on this. Yeah, I will when I get the time to do that.

“At this point of time, I was completely focused on this campaign and there was nothing else on my mind. And I haven’t given any other thought to what happens in the future,” Dravid told reporters on Sunday night.

Dravid took over as the head coach from Ravi Shastri around the same time Rohit became captain in all three formats during a turbulent time. Shastri’s successful four-year run in the role had come to an end in disappointing fashion in the 2021 T20 World Cup, which was also Kohli’s last as T20I captain. Kohli would later resign from Test captaincy after a series defeat in the tour of South Africa, and had been unceremoniously demoted from the role in ODIs.

The Rohit-Rahul pair have since led India to a semi-final finish in last year’s T20 World Cup in Australia and a dominant victory in this year’s Asia Cup in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, besides the runner-up finish in the World Cup.

However, Dravid, who had previously had an impactful run as India A and U-19 coach, refrained from analysing his tenure as head coach.

“To be honest, I am not really someone who’s going to judge and analyse myself. I was really proud to work with. I think the players that I worked with over the last two years in all the formats, it’s been a privilege,” ‘Jammy’ added.

Dravid also remained dismissive on continuing in the role in next year’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the United States.

“Honestly, I haven’t thought about it. I think all our campaign, all our energies were focused on this match, focused on this tournament, and focused till here. And I haven’t actually given it any thought or I have no plans, I have had no plans of what’s going to happen in the future.”

India have not won an ICC event for more than a decade now and both fans and experts would have backed the Rohit Sharma-led side to end that long wait, especially after their dominant performances throughout the group stage as well as in the semi-final.

However, Australia highlighted once again as to why they are such a fearsome entity when it comes to the big matches, executing their plans to perfection to win a record-extending sixth world title.

Rohit Sharma's India didn't win World Cup, but captain's blueprint is the way forward

The 10-team Cricket World Cup was 45 days long and entailed 48 matches. At times it felt boring, and unnecessarily long-drawn. But then there were moments of extreme high and unprecedented satisfaction. Ultimately, it ended with a defeat in the final for Team India, but its culmination has somewhere left us all wanting a bit more, even Indian fans. Because, before it all unravelled in the final, Team India’s march to the final was not only unprecedented — with 10 wins from 10 matches — it was dominant and ruthless. A brand of cricket that we all had yearned for years to see from the best-paid cricketers in the world.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

And the credit for that transformation squarely goes to captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid. After all, no one changed as much as Rohit did to bring in the change into Team India’s mindset and playing style.

In the 2019 ODI World Cup, Rohit was the highest run-getter with 648 from nine matches and five hundreds. But he had sensed it well that his style of accumulating runs and India’s overall approach of safety-first wasn’t going to be enough to win titles. It was at the same time when England had become the ODI champions on the back of their take-no-prisoners approach.

It wasn’t the greatest of the observations as the game has changed so much in the modern day. Even defending a 400+ target is a steep task at times. The approach which for a long time was to accumulate runs in middle overs and only go big in powerplays has gone under a radical change. Teams don’t wait for the end. It’s a full-blooded onslaught from the start.

Be aggressive and get rewarded — this in many ways are the basics of modern-day game. There’s no room for compromise and teams that have abided by this principle have been the world champions.

Rohit harboured the same dream.

“I only see the World Cup. If I get one or two hundred or don’t get any, but I want to win the World Cup. That is the main goal,” he had said ahead of the 2023 World Cup.

To get to the pinnacle, India adopted the policy to be aggressive from the word go once Rohit took over the captaincy reins in 2021 December and in real terms in 2023. With the T20 World Cup last year, the focus largely was on the shortest format and as we got into the new year, Rohit shifted gears.

Attack and attack

From safety first, in the first 10 overs, Rohit became a six-hitting machine.

In 2023, he has smashed 47 sixes in the opening powerplay — the most for a batter in ODIs. He has scored 797 runs at a strike rate of 119 — again the most. He dominated those stats in the World Cup as well with 401 runs and 24 sixes. His strike rate went to 135 in the opening powerplay.

In 2021, Rohit had a strike rate of 86.53. It jumped to 114.22 and 117.07 in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

The funda was clear: He wanted to lead from the front to bring in the change. And it rubbed off on his teammates. Two of the top-six team totals in the World Cup belonged to India and they had three 350+ scores. The Men in Blue scored the most powerplay runs in the tournament at a better strike rate than any other team.

What it meant was a 10-game winning streak — India’s best performance stats-wise in a World Cup. Most importantly, all of those 10 wins were one-sided victories in which India were dominant and fearless in ways never seen before.

They weren’t the team that waited for things to happen. They became a side without any inhibitions and wanted to take the initiative. And that’s Rohit, the captain’s, legacy from the World Cup.

Calm amid chaos

If there’s anything else, it’s how he took the team together with himself. Five titles with Mumbai Indians as a captain in the Indian Premier League, while leading some of the legends in the game, Rohit has shown that he has a maturity of another level.

A level-headed and grounded captain and player, the 36-year-old used the same skills to bring peace into the dressing room and build trust, allowing the players to be expressive.

He is not known for having any issues with any of his teammates and is hugely popular among the youngsters. One of the masterstrokes of Rohit and Dravid was to bring in mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton for the T20 World Cup last year, who helped star batter Virat Kohli make the transition back from a captain to player and allowed him to rediscover his scoring touch.

It’s unfortunate that despite the changes India weren’t able to break the ICC title drought, but the new approach has potential and promise. As far as Rohit is concerned, he is 36 and where he goes from the final defeat is unclear, but it’s clear that India need to carry on the aggressive approach.
