What if the World Cup semi-finals are washed out?

In case the semi-finals are washed out despite using the reserve days then the team which finished higher on points in the group stage will qualify for the final. India in this case have an advantage over fourth-paced New Zealand as Men In Blue topped the group table with 18 points. the Kiwis only had 10 points.

South Africa finished second with 14 points but have an advantage over Australia who also had 14 points but finished third on the basis of net run rate. The Proteas had an NRR of +1.261 and Australia had an NRR of +0.841.

Playing hours for World Cup knockouts

Before going to reserve day or even on the reserve day there are other playing conditions that will be applied to get the match completed. For example, if a match is interrupted due to rain or unavoidable circumstances then 120 minutes (2 hours) of extra time will be provided. This also means that if a match is delayed by 120 minutes due to rain then it can be played without losing overs.

If the delay is beyond 120 minutes then overs will be deducted on the basis of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stren method. An over will be deducted for every five minutes lost post the 120-minute wait.

The ICC playing conditions say that every effort will be made to complete the match on the scheduled day with any necessary reduction in overs taking place and only if the minimum number of overs necessary to constitute a match cannot be bowled on the scheduled day will the match be completed on the reserve day.

A minimum of 20 overs each will be needed to complete a match. If a minimum of 20 overs for each team is not possible despite using the 120 minutes of extra time then the match will be moved to the reserve day.

Also, If the match has started on the scheduled day and overs are subsequently reduced following an interruption, but no further play is possible, the match will resume on the reserve day at the point where the last ball was played.

If no play is possible on scheduled match day despite 120 minutes of extra time, the whole match will be played on reserve day.
