With the 2023 ODI World Cup done and dusted, the focus shifts towards the buildup ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. The IPL 2024 mini-auction takes place in Dubai on 19 December, but ahead of that, franchises have been busy announcing the player retentions and dealing in player trades.

Five players have been traded in the current IPL trading window so far. West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd was the first player to be traded, moving to five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

The latest trades to be completed were those of Shahbaz Ahmed, who moved from Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Mayank Dagar, who moved the other way round.
Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Hardik Pandya is also reportedly close to returning to MI.
As far as retentions and releases are concerned, Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) Ben Stokes is one of major names to have been released ahead of the auction. Stokes was part of England’s forgettable World Cup campaign and is now set to undergo a knee surgery ahead of the Test series against India in January.
Joe Root has also opted out of the upcoming season of the IPL, while big names like Jofra Archer, Cameron Green, Shardul Thakur and Lockie Ferguson are set to be released by their franchises.
