Just a couple of weeks back, Pakistan and Sri Lanka had met in the Super Four of the Asia Cup in a knockout match. It mattered plenty with a place in the final on the line. That match went all the way to the final ball with Sri Lanka stealing the win. As the two teams prepare to face off in Hyderabad, the scenario isn’t quite urgent or drastic. Even if its a World Cup fixture.
Still, it is an important game for both in how they garner momentum from here on. Pakistan started with a win while Sri Lanka were blanked. Upon closer inspection, though, one observes that Sri Lanka were beaten by South Africa and their batting onslaught. Pakistan, in comparison, looked shaky and uninspiring in their win against minnows Netherlands.
Playing their last game in Hyderabad before shifting to Ahmedabad for the all-important match against India, Pakistan would be desperate to build some momentum. Their concerns lie at the top of the order which faltered once again. But can take positives from the middle-order firing and Haris Rauf picking up some vital wickets.
Sri Lanka would be better placed shrugging the hammering against South Africa off and concede there was little they could do. Australia were dismantled by the same batting couple of weeks ago as well. For the islanders, a stat can be worth motivation: they have never beaten Pakistan in a World Cup contest. Seven matches played, seven lost.
