Virat Kohli could break Tendulkar's ODI century record in World Cup: Ricky Ponting

Virat Kohli laid down the early marker with a stunning innings for India in the first match of the ICC World Cup 2023 campaign. Arresting the early collapse, Virat Kohli, along with KL Rahul, took down Pat Cummins and his team in match No. 5 of the One Day International (ODI) World Cup in Chennai. However, he was dismissed on 85, but had done enough for India as the hosts won the match quite comprehensively.

With 47 ODI centuries to his name, Kohli finds himself only two centuries away from matching Sachin Tendulkar’s incredible feat in the 50-over format. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, believes that Kohli will be able to break Sachin’s long-standing record in the current edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Speaking on the ICC Review podcast, Ponting said, “I think he will. I think he’ll definitely get two hundreds, whether he gets the three is another thing. But the venues, the wickets and the grounds in India are just so conducive to scoring, making big runs. Who knows with him, it’s probably his last World Cup as well.”

Coming into the World Cup, Kohli had already notched up 47 centuries in his 282 ODIs and also holds the record of becoming the fastest player to reach 13,000 runs in the 50-over format. He joins the ranks of the top five players to reach this milestone in men’s ODIs.

Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for 49 centuries in 463 ODIs and also boasts the highest run tally in ODI cricket with 18,426 runs. Ponting further added, “There is every chance at the end of this World Cup he could be equal with, if not breaking Sachin’s record, which is remarkable within itself.”

After beating Australia in the first match, India will now travel to New Delhi where they will take on Afghanistan. The track at the Arun Jaitley Stadium is an absolute batting beauty and the Indian batters would be keen to fill their boots.
