Asian Games Highlights, Day 9: India win three silver and four bronze, stretch medal count to 60

TEJASWIN SHANKAR WINS THE 400M EVENT! He collects a total of 830 points from the event that takes his overall tally to 4,260!


Shankar remains ahead of China’s Qihao Sun (4010) and Thailand’s Suttisak Singkhon (4004) at the top of the table.

Five events have taken place so far and the remaining five take place tomorrow, starting with 110m hurdles.

MEDAL ALERT! The Indian quartet of Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi, Vithya Ramraj, Rajesh Ramesh and Subha Venkatesan win silver in the mixed 4x400m mixed relay.


They had initially won bronze with Sri Lanka finishing ahead of them at 2nd. The Sri Lankan quartet however, has since been disqualified, resulting in India’s bronze getting upgraded to silver.


With that, India’s medal count goes up to 60! India win three silver and four bronze on Day 9.

China’s Shiqi Xiong wins gold with 6.73m while Hong Kong’s Nga Yan Yue (6.50m) wins bronze. All three medallists register their personal best efforts.


Shaili Singh, the other Indian in the fray, finishes fifth with a best effort of 6.48m.

In the high jump event in men’s decathlon, India’s Tejaswin Shankar finishes right on top with a best effort of 2.18 metres — the only one to jump higher than two metres.


Shankar collects 973 points from the event as a result, taking his overall tally to 3401 points that keeps him at the No 1 position. China’s Qihao Sun, who finished with a best effort of 1.97m in the high jump event, is second with an overall tally of 3261 points.

As for the women’s pole vault final, India’s Pavithra Vengatesh ends without a medal after failing to clear 4.10m in three attempts, finishing sixth among 10 finalists.


Japan’s Misaki Morota currently leads the pack with China's Ling Li and Chunge Niu in close pursuit.

Asian Games LIVE: India won three bronze medals on the ninth day of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China on Monday. The men’s and women’s roller skating teams won their relay competitions to extend India’s medal tally. Thereafter, Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee’s superlative run in women’s doubles table tennis was halted in the semi-finals for a third place finish.

Later in the day, Shaili Singh goes for her maiden Asian Games medal, while Priti and Parul Chaudhary will carry India’s chances in women’s 3000m steeplechase. Also, India’s 4x400m mixed relay team, best in the continent, so a gold from them will be a fair expectation.

India collected 15 medals on a historic Sunday with nine of them coming from the track and field events. It took India’s tally to 53 and maintained their fourth place in the medals tally.

On the day shooting events drew to a close, India won women’s and men’s trap team medals while Kynan Chenai won an individual bronze. Aditi Ashok won a silver in women’s golf after a disappointing final round. Nikhat Zareen bowed out in her boxing semi-final. India men’s badminton team went from 2-0 up to lose 2-3 to China. In athletics, Avinash Sable (men’s 3000m steeplechase), Tajinderpal Singh Toor (men’s shot put), Harmilan Bains (women’s 1500m), Ajay Kumar Saroj, Jinson Johnson (men’s 1500m), Nandini Agasara (women’s heptathlon), Murali Sreeshankar (long jump), Seema Punia (discus throw) and Jyothi Yarraji (women’s 100m hurdles) all bagged medals.
