One of the big positives for India in the recently concluded ODI series against Australia was the form of Suryakumar Yadav. After bossing the T20 format, Surya finally found his range in the first couple of matches and gave India hope ahead of the World Cup. However, cricket legend Virender Sehwag is not very convinced with his ODI form and remains quite skeptical.
He said that Suryakumar’s primary role seemed to be in the final 15-20 overs, where he can leverage his T20 skills. However, he was quick to add that the likes of Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul were also capable of fulfilling that role.
“Suryakumar hasn’t done anything big yet in ODI cricket. He only bats in those final 15-20 overs where he utilises his T20 abilities which undoubtedly is important as well. But Hardik, Ishan and Rahul can all do that same job as well. So Iyer is confirmed for No. 4. Suraykumar will have to wait and if he does get a chance at No. 4 he has to score a big hundred and show that he can also score a ton as well,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.
In another major development, India named veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin as Axar Patel’s replacement in the 15-member squad for the upcoming Cricket World Cup. Axar has not yet recovered from a left quadriceps strain sustained during the Asia Cup Super Four match against Bangladesh. Ravichandran Ashwin, who had made a comeback to the format against Australia, impressed by picking up four wickets in two games during the series against Australia.
India have a whole host of players to choose from in the middle order. KL Rahul has been in great form ever since he made a comeback against Pakistan in the Asia Cup. He will take up the wicket-keeping gloves and be the rock at number 5. Shreyas Iyer looked good when he cracked a ton in the second ODI in Indore and Ishan Kishan has been moved around a lot in the middle order.
