Asian Games 2023 Highlights: India win five medals, progress in men's football after 1-1 draw with Myanmar

That brings us to the end of our coverage of Day 1 (the official Day 1 that is) of the 19th Asian Games, with the Indian contingent getting their campaign off to an auspicious start with five medals to their name, including three silver.

Indian women's football team goes down fighting to bow out of the Asian Games. Thailand were the higher-ranked side and started strongly but India created a lot of opportunities on the counter-attack but could convert them. Parichat Thongrong scored the winner for Thailand in the 51st minute.

Indian women's cricket team will face Sri Lanka in the final. The Lankans defeated Pakistan by six wickets in the other semi-final.

After the match was tied 2-2, Sharath Kamal won the last tie to fire India into the last eight. He went 0-2 down but bounced back to beat Kenzhigulov 5-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9.

India will now face South Korea at 4PM IST today.

India win by 8 wickets

India are assured of a silver medal at least as they beat Bangladesh in the semi-final to advance to the final of the women's cricket event at the Asian Games. The 52-run chase was completed in 8.2 overs with Jemimah Rodrigues scoring 20 not out from 15 balls. Shafali Verma scored 17.

Asian Games LIVE Updates: The Asian Games 2023 was officially declared open on Saturday in Hangzhou, China with an elaborate opening ceremony that included 3D fireworks and a digital torchbearer. Sunday at the Asian Games will be a very busy day with multiple medal events getting underway. The action for India will start as early as 6 AM IST with women’s 10m air rifle qualification. The women’s cricket team faces Bangladesh in the semi-final at 6.30 AM IST and a victory will ensure a medal for India.

Both men’s and women’s football teams will be in action today in their last group games. In boxing, world champion Nikhat Zareen (50 kg) will open her campaign against Nguyen Thi Tam of Vietnam, the boxer she defeated in the final of the World Championships in New Delhi. Preeti Pawar (54kg) will be another Indian boxer in the ring.

In table tennis, the women’s team will face off against Thailand in the Round of 16, while the men’s team face Kazakhstan. Sumit Nagal, Ankita Raina and Karman Thandi will be launching their singles tennis campaign today.

In swimming, the freestyle and backstroke heats will begin at 7:30 AM IST. Swimmers like Mathew T G, Anil Kumar Shylaja, Utkarsh Patil and Srihari Nataraj will be in action.

In volleyball, the Indian men’s team faces powerhouse Japan in the semi-final at 12 PM. World No 73 India have so far stunned higher-ranked teams like South Korea and Chinese Taipei in the event.
