IND vs AUS: Dravid backs Ashwin

Ashwin may be returning to the ODI format after a long time but India coach Rahul Dravid has thrown his weight behind the Indian off-spinner. Dravid said that the series is not a trial for Ashwin and that he could play two or three matches.

“It’s a good chance for him to test himself because he has not played the 50-over cricket for a long time. I will not say that for him it is a trial or anything, we know his quality. This is a chance for him to get the taste of this format and we just want to give him an opportunity to play in two or three games,” Dravid said.

IND vs AUS: All eyes on Ashwin and Iyer

Shreyas Iyer is part of the World Cup squad but missed the last few games in Asia Cup due to back spasms. Is he fit to play or not? It will become clear today and if he's still not fit then changes can be made to India's World Cup squad.

R Ashwin meanwhile is back in India's squad after a gap of more than one year thanks to the hamstring injury to Axar Patel. There's a good chance of him playing today as he looks to make a case for the World Cup.

India vs Australia 1st ODI LIVE Score and Updates: India’s final dress rehearsal for the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 begins on Friday with the first of the three-match ODI series against Australia at Mohali. The series and especially the first two ODIs are going to be nothing short of a litmus test for Men in Blue as regular skipper Rohit Sharma, star batter Virat Kohli and all-rounder Hardik Pandya have been rested for the first two matches.

KL Rahul will be captaining India in the first two ODIs, while Australia will have Pat Cummins and Steve Smith returning to the team after missing the South Africa tour. Both players have been struggling with wrist injuries since the Ashes 2023. Pacer Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, however, will sit out of the first ODI. Starc is having groin soreness while Maxwell is facing ankle issues.

All eyes will also be on Ravichandran Ashwin. The veteran off-spinner has been recalled to India’s ODI squad for the first since January 2022. He comes in as replacement for all-rounder Axar Patel who suffered a hamstring injury in the Asia Cup 2023. All-rounder Washington Sundar is also part of the squad, hence, it will be interesting to see who India will pick in the first ODI.

India head coach Rahul Dravid has already stated that the Australia series is not a “trial” for Ashwin and that the spinner was always in management’s plans.

“This is not a trial for Ashwin. Having someone of Ashwin’s experience to come back is always good for us. Someone like Ashwin provides you that experience, that ability to also contribute with the bat at No. 8 and someone we always thought of in case, there are certain opportunities opened, he is someone who is definitely a part of your plans and someone of his experience, I know has not played a lot of ODI cricket of late but someone of his experience can do that really well,” Dravid said at the pre-match press conference.

Another player whose return is eagerly sought is Shreyas Iyer who missed the last few matches in Asia Cup 2023 due to back spasms. If Iyer doesn’t get match fit then India could make changes to their World Cup squad.

Similarly, both teams will be looking to sort out their combinations but the focus will also be on keeping the players fresh as the World Cup starts in less than two weeks.
