India vs Australia, 2nd ODI preview: Buoyed by their performance in the opener in Mohali, Team India will aim to clinch the three-match series when they face Australia in the second ODI in Indore on Sunday.

The Men in Blue produced quite the all-round performance in Friday’s opening clash at Mohali’s IS Bindra PCA Stadium that also witnessed a brief appearance of rain. KL Rahul, leading the hosts in the absence of Rohit Sharma, opted to field. Despite the hot and humid conditions on offer in Mohali, Mohammed Shami made the ball talk as he played a key role in restricting the Aussies to a total that ultimately proved to be slightly below par.

Shami, who has found himself warming the bench in recent one-dayers ever since Jasprit Bumrah returned to action, ran through the Australian batting lineup and returned figures of 5/51 that later won him the Player of the Match award. Thanks to Shami’s efforts, Australia were bowled out for 276 at a venue where scores in excess of 300 aren’t considered safe.

The match also witnessed the return of Ravichandran Ashwin to ODIs for the first time since January 2022. The red-ball specialist, who had played just two ODIs in six years before Friday’s fixture, bagged the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne.

Openers Shubman Gill (74) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (71) then slammed half-centuries and laid the foundation for a successful chase with a 142-run stand. Gaikwad’s sparkling knock helped the Men in Blue tick off another box, with the Maharashtra batter presenting himself as a back-up opening option in the eyes of the team leadership.

Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav then came to the team’s rescue after they had lost four wickets in quick succession. The fifth-wicket pair would stitch an eighty-run stand and bring up their individual half-centuries, the latter burying the ghosts of the hat-trick of ducks against the same opposition earlier this year in the process.

Squads:

India: Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk/c), Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Tilak Varma, Washington Sundar

Australia: David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Short, Pat Cummins (c), Sean Abbott, Adam Zampa, Alex Carey, Josh Hazlewood, Glenn Maxwell, Spencer Johnson, Tanveer Sangha, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Ellis
