Sunil Gavaskar would pick Rishabh Pant in T20 World Cup squad if he is fit: 'He walks back into the team'

Former India captain and one of the greatest ever batters Sunil Gavaskar believes that Rishabh Pant’s inclusion in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad should be undisputed if the wicketkeeper-batsman gets back to full fitness in the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Reports suggest that Pant is making a great recovery and that he could be back for the Delhi Capitals (DC) during the IPL 2024 season. The reports also added that there are however a few concerns over his wicket-keeping.

Speaking on Star Sports during the India vs South Africa second T20I match, Gavaskar said that he will pick Pant if he plays the whole IPL without any fitness issues.

“Yeah, he walks back into the team. He’s an impact player. He shows his fitness in the IPL. Four months to go for the IPL. He plays the IPL. Whatever he does at the IPL. If he plays the whole IPL without any injury setback, then he walks into the team. Whether he scores one run or no runs at all in the IPL. I think he is a game-changer. He would be one of the first couple of picks if I was a selector,” said Gavaskar.

How has Rishabh Pant fared in T20Is?

For all his exploits in Test cricket, Rishabh Pant has not aced T20Is. With a modest average of 22.43 and a strike rate of 126.37 in 66 matches, there are few apprehensions over his adaptability in the shorter formats.

After the horrific car accident last year, one of the biggest challenges for the left-hander will be to get back to match fitness and immediately start creating an impact. The IPL 2024 season will be closely monitored by the selectors of the T20 World Cup next year.

The Delhi Capitals meanwhile have also retained the likes of David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Anrich Nortje, and Lungi Ngidi for IPL 2024.
