India vs South Africa: Virat Kohli’s form will dictate Test series, says Jacques Kallis

Former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis believes that Virat Kohli will be the key for India if they are to win their maiden Test series victory in South Africa. Kohli, will come into the series after scoring 765 runs in 11 innings during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. He was adjudged Player of the Tournament for his batting exploits.

The right-hander has impressive numbers in Test cricket in South Africa – he has piled up 719 runs at an average of 51.36 in 14 innings. This includes two centuries and three half-centuries. India have been very good in the last two Test series in South Africa, but have not been able to bag the series.

Speaking with Star Sports, Kallis said that Kohli will need to lead with the bat and his experience, and the former India captain will play a key role in India securing their first victory against South Africa in the rainbow nation.

Kallis also spoke about Kohli’s familiarity with South African conditions owing to which he will be valuable to the team, particularly the younger players, on how to adjust and adapt.

Kallis said, “He’s a massive player, no matter where it is. Having played here quite a bit and had a fair amount of success. He’ll be able to pass that knowledge on to the other guys, especially the younger guys and give them ideas on how to manage these conditions and then what to expect.”

Kallis also added that he believes Kohli’s form with the bat will define India’s campaign in the series.”I am sure he will want to have a big series here in South Africa. He has been in good form. I think he will play a major role in helping India. If they are to win here, he will have to have a good series,” Kallis added.

The upcoming two-match Test series in India will be part of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Jacques Kallis believes that Centurion, the venue for the first Test, is likely to favour South Africa.
