Rohit Sharma is BCCI’s preferred choice for India’s T20I captaincy role, it has been reported. Rohit has not played for India in T20Is since the 2022 T20 World Cup and Hardik Pandya has captained Men in Blue in his absence. With Rohit missing from the format for over a year, it was felt that Pandya could be India’s captain in the 2024 T20 World Cup, but news agency PTI has reported that Rohit has been offered the captaincy and the ball is now in his court. The Mumbai Indians skipper has been asked to take up the role despite him missing the upcoming T20I series in South Africa.
“Rohit has been offered T20 captaincy but he is in UK on a holiday and wants an extended break after four months of gruelling season till end of the World Cup. But as captain, he has the highest respect for the dressing room and if he agrees to lead India in T20 World Cup, he will lead,” a BCCI source told PTI.
IND vs SA: Full squads and latest news
Rohit has led MI to five IPL titles and is known for his astute and calm leadership in the T20 format. He recently led India to the ODI World Cup 2023 final with Men in Blue winning 10 matches before a defeat to Australia in the summit clash.
Rohit is not the only big name missing from the white-ball squads. Virat Kohli is also set to miss the white-ball assignment in South Africa but will feature in the Tests.
In fact, only three players – Shreyas Iyer, Mukesh Kumar and Ruturaj Gaikwad – were selected in all three squads.
