Irfan Pathan wants India to 'combine experience and youth', Manjrekar says Kohli will have to prove himself

India’s 2007 T20 World Cup victory is largely seen as an achievement scripted by a bunch of young and inexperienced players, but Irfan Pathan, who was part of the winning side has debunked that theory. Pathan said that Team India in the 2007 T20 World Cup included big and established names like Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan. The reason Irfan was speaking on the 2007 squad was to send a message that India should select both young and experienced players as they look to break their one-decade long ICC title drought at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA.

“I feel Indian team should combine experience and youth. When we won the last T20 World Cup, in 2007, many said it was a young and inexperienced team that won the title, but that wasn’t it. Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir had been playing for a while then,” Pathan said on Star Sports.

“Me and Dhoni were also part of team for almost four years. There was also Ajit Agarkar, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh as well. So you have to combine experience with youth especially for those conditions where batting gets a bit tricky.”

Pathan’s comments also came after Sanjay Manjrekar on the same on the sports channel said that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s return to the T20I side should depend on their form close to the tournament.

“Who knows what’s in store in life? I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. I believe the approach should be extremely simple. We have played a lot of World Cups and haven’t been able to win them,” Manjrekar said.

“We are maybe playing slightly different cricket in the final stages of World Cups. When something goes out of your hand, simplify it. Pick your team based on form close to the World Cup.”

Manjrekar also added that Kohli will have to show he is a better player than the youngsters who impressed in the recently-concluded T20Is against Australia.

“Virat Kohli will have to show that he is a better option than the youngsters who are playing currently, and Rohit Sharma as T20 batter and captain vs Hardik Pandya, the T20 batter, all-rounder and captain,” he said. “This should be the competition and you should only go with merit there because we have seen what we have got with great players, stature and experience.”

Yashashvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rinku Singh are several youngsters who have made a case for inclusion in the T20I side.
