WTC Final: Ricky Ponting picks his combined India-Australia XI with Rohit Sharma as captain

Ricky Ponting has selected his combined India-Australia Test XI ahead of the World Test Championship final between the two. The former Australia skipper has gone for form over reputation in his choices on the latest episode of The ICC Review.

Ponting first chose an opener from either teams with a left-right combination as Rohit Sharma and Usman Khawaja were named at the top of the batting order.

With that, Ponting picked Rohit Sharma as the captain of the playing XI even though his full team does include Pat Cummins.

“I’ll start with Usman Khawaja. His last couple of years, whether it has been in Australia or away, have been outstanding at the top of the order,” Ponting said on The ICC Review podcast.

“Almost since he’s been picked back in the Australian team, he hasn’t put a foot wrong. The older he is getting, the better he is getting.

“I’m going left hand-right hand, so I’ll go for Rohit Sharma as the other opener. He’s not just entirely form-based either. I wanted him to be captain of the side.

“Pat Cummins, I’ll mention him later, he’ll be in this side, but just from the experience point of view with Rohit, he’s obviously been captain a lot longer than Pat has, so I thought he deserved to be the captain of this team.”

WTC Final: Prize money announced for India vs Australia match

Earlier in the year, Rohit Sharma had captained India to a 2-1 Test series win in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. The right-hander scored 242 runs in the four-match series where he also bagged a ton in Nagpur.

“We know what sort of class he holds with the bat,” Ponting said.

“Even his recent form in the last series against Australia was great, scoring that unbelievable hundred on a wicket where everyone else really struggled on.”

Going ahead with his choices, Ponting didn’t hesitate in picking Marnus Labuschagne as the No 3 batter hailing his contributions in recent years.

“Since he came into Test cricket as a concussion sub at Lord’s when Steve Smith got hit by Jofra Archer, he’s hardly put a foot wrong,” Ponting said.

“He’s improved and come on in leaps and bounds to be where he is now, right at the top of the world Test Batting Rankings, so it was pretty hard to go past him.”

WTC final: Yashasvi Jaiswal to replace Ruturaj Gaikwad as stand-by player, says report

Ponting opted for Virat Kohli and Steve Smith in the middle order. The former Australia skipper said their record in the last decade made them obvious choices.

“Pretty hard to go past the next couple I’ve got in the batting line-up, which are Virat Kohli and Steve Smith,” Ponting said.

“If you talk about great players of the last decade, both of these guys will be right at the top of anyone’s list. Both with exceptional Test records and both make a lot of hundreds.”

“I know it has been a couple of years and been a bit of a lean sort of trot with Virat, but he bounced back to his best in that last series against Australia and thoroughly deserves to be picked in the middle order.”

With one spot left in the middle order, Ponting went for all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja while saying the India player is someone who could “easily hold down a number six or number seven spot”.

“What I’ve seen with Ravi Jadeja the last two or three years in Test cricket is how much his batting has improved, and he can easily hold down a number six or number seven spot,” Ponting said.

Ricky Ponting went with Alex Carey as his wicketkeeper but wasn’t sure of his place in the batting order.

“It could be Carey at six and Jadeja at seven, or vice versa, whichever way the game was sort of going,” Ponting said.

“Alex Carey’s Test career has grown a lot in the last 12 months as well. His wicketkeeping is almost second to none in world cricket at the moment.

“He had an unbelievable series in Australia last summer, and then his keeping in those trying conditions in India in the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy as well was absolutely outstanding.

“He probably didn’t make the runs that we thought he might have got in those spinning conditions in India, but most batsmen didn’t, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt there.”

With bowling options left to choose, excluding Jadeja, Ponting chose Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Mohammed Shami. Starc, in particular, earned high praise from Ponting.

“Mitchell Starc’s last 12 months, I think have probably been some of the best that he’s actually had in Test cricket.

“He’s developed a few more skills, I think his consistency has become a lot better. We know how dangerous he is with the new ball, but his old ball bowling has certainly become better.”

Ponting, part of the Delhi Capitals setup in the IPL, said he went with Shami having seen him perform well for the Gujarat Titans.

“I know we’re picking a Test team here, and Shami’s Test record the last couple of years has been outstanding, but some of his bowling over the last few weeks in the IPL has also been absolutely unbelievable,” Ponting said.

“He’s just about the pick of the new-ball bowlers I think now going around in the IPL. I know we’re switching to a red ball, but I think he thoroughly deserves to be picked in that line-up.”

With one spot to go, Ponting added another spin bowler in the former of Nathan Lyon.

“Nathan Lyon will be the other spinner in the side,” Ponting said.

“I judge spin on what Indian subcontinental batsmen normally talk about when they talk about facing spin bowling, and everyone I’ve spoken to from India or Sri Lanka and those sorts of places rate Nathan Lyon really highly. So he’s going to go in there.”

Ricky Ponting’s combined India-Australia Test XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Ravindra Jadeja, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Mohammed Shami

Wrestlers' protest: Mahila Samman Mahapanchayat supporters stopped, arrested

Mahila Samman Mahapanchayat, called by the protesting wrestlers for 28 May, the day of the inauguration of the new Parliament building, got off to a rocky start with supporters stopped on the borders and arrested.

Later, the protesting wrestlers were stopped and detained from their Jantar Mantar site. The wrestlers had called the ‘Mahapanchayat’ in front of the new Parliament.

In the lead up to the inauguration of the new Parliament building and wrestlers calling for the ‘mahapanchayat,’ Dependra Pathak, Special CP, Law and Order had said, “We respect our athletes, but we will not let there be any disturbance in the inauguration (of the new parliament building).”

Delhi Police have deployed heavy security presence throughout the city and on the borders to curtail any protests from taking place. As a result, members of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee from Amritsar were stopped at the Ambala border.

“We will not allow anything to disrupt the inauguration of the new Parliament building. The entire Delhi Police is on its toes to make sure the inauguration ceremony is conducted smoothly,” said Delhi Police Special CP Deepender Pathak on the wrestlers’ protest.

Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, two of the leading faces in this over a month long agitation, called for people to march towards the new Parliament and hold a peaceful protest.

“The Mahapanchayat will be held, we have given a letter (to Delhi Police) seeking permission,” said wrestler Bajrang Punia.

“I want to request the police not to trouble us as we will march peacefully (towards the new Parliament building). We are also the citizens of this country,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sakshi Malik said, “Those who have been stopped at borders, we request them to move forward (towards Jantar Mantar) peacefully.”

Security was also beefed up at the Tikri border to prevent farmers and women from entering Delhi to join the protesting wrestlers.

Woman activist Jagmati Sangwan was arrested from Jantar Mantar as she tried to make her way towards the new Parliament.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Parliament building. Representatives of 25 political parties and many dignitaries, including chief ministers and ministers, attended the inauguration.

To ensure its smooth functioning, security had been stepped up by enhancing police deployment, placing multiple barricades and sufficient police pickets. A police official told news agency PTI that intensive patrolling is also being carried out across the national capital and its bordering areas to ensure that law and order is maintained.

A day prior, farmers leader Rakesh Tikait said thousands of farmers from Uttar Pradesh will gather at Ghazipur border and enter the national capital to extend their support to the protesting wrestlers. Farmers had planned to enter Delhi from other border points as well.

The wrestlers have demanded the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh who, they alleged, sexually harassed several women grapplers.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had urged the wrestlers not to hold a protest march. “These players sat on agitation on January 18. I wrote to the Sports Ministry that I would step aside from wrestling and wait for the investigation to end. Two investigation committees were made by the Sports Ministry and Indian Olympic Association. But the wrestlers did not wait for the investigation to end and returned to dharna. I was questioned for six hours by the police. I did not say anything. These players demanded that I undergo a narco test. When I saw that our elders from khaap panchayat wanted me to do so, I agreed. What else I should do? I am ready for investigation, narco test. I trust Supreme Court and Delhi Police,” he said in a statement.

“The country is getting a new Parliament building and it is a matter of pride. But I was saddened when I heard that wrestlers want to carry out their agitation near it. I urge these wrestlers that I am ready, ready for the narco test, ready for everything. But this (new Parliament inauguration) is a proud moment for us and they (wrestlers) should not create hurdles & world must not get any wrong message,” added Brij Bhushan.

CSK vs GT, IPL 2023 Final: Shami vs Gaikwad, Gill vs Chahar and Dube vs Rashid — Top player battles to watch out for

The stage is set for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 Final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to be held on Sunday. Gujarat Titans (GT) will vie for a second IPL trophy in as many seasons, but Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stand in their way.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

GT have been clinical with their all-round performance this season, while CSK, under the leadership of MS Dhoni, have instilled confidence in themselves to reach the summit clash.

The two teams only clashed a few days back in Chennai during the Qualifier 1 contest. That day, CSK emerged victorious by 15 runs but the final can be a different ball game altogether.

Ahead of the title clash, we take a look at some key player battles that could decide the contest:

Mohammed Shami vs Ruturaj Gaikwad

Youngsters have shone in the IPL this season, and Ruturaj Gaikwad has been one of them. Gaikewad has amassed 564 runs from 15 matches this season, at a strike-rate of 146.88, with four half-century.

Against Shami, though, Gaikwad has managed just 46 runs from seven innings in the IPL at a strike-rate close to 70.

Shami, meanwhile, has been impactful with the new ball this season. He stands atop the Purple Cap standings with 28 wickets, and out of those, he has taken 15 wickets in the powerplay.

Shami’s form with the new ball makes his battle against CSK opener Gaikwad an enticing affair. Gaikwad has the tendency to hit from the word go, and it will be interesting to see his approach against the senior India pacer on Sunday.

Shubman Gill vs Deepak Chahar

Shubman Gill is in the form of his life in the IPL. He is currently the leading run-scorer with 851 runs from 16 matches, and it seems like he is only getting better with every passing match where he bats in.

Coming fresh from a 60-ball 129 on Friday, Gill will be raring to go in the final, and will come up against Deepak Chahar, who himself has enjoyed a resurgence of sorts in the second half of the IPL after suffering a hamstring injury early in the season.

Against Chahar, Shubman has faced 47 deliveries in the IPL and scored 62 runs, at a strike-rate of 131.91, and has been dismissed by Chahar only thrice in eight matches.

One of those dismissals came in the Qualifier 1 match between GT and CSK, when Gill was dismissed for 42. Facing a slow bouncer, Gill went for the pull but failed to control it, eventually being caught at fine leg.

Both are in-form cricketers for their respective sides, with Chahar having taken 12 wickets from the last five matches in the IPL, and while Gill will be looking to go big early on, his battle against Chahar could prove to be a defining moment in the title-decider.

Shivam Dube vs Rashid Khan

Shivam Dube has established himself as a power-hitter since joining Chennai Super Kings and sometimes even a finisher this season. Dube has amassed 33 sixes this season, and sits in second place for most sixes hit, behind RCB skipper Faf du Plessis (36).

However, in the final on Sunday, Dube could come up against GT’s in form spinner Rashid Khan. The Afghan has 27 wickets to his name this season, and apart from contending for the Purple Cap, Rashid will be looking to hand a few crucial blows to the opposition.

So far this season, Dube has scored 386 runs from 15 matches at a strike rate of 158.85, that includes three fifties. This has been his best season with the bat yet, as far as runs are concerned, and will be hoping to pile misery on the GT bowlers.

Rashid Khan, meanwhile, has been pivotal in the middle overs for GT, and it is in this exact same phase when he could come up against Dube. And although Rashid is yet to dismiss Dube in the IPL, the 24-year-old has given away just four runs in nine balls to Dube.

We all know what Rashid can do with his googly, and as has been the case this season, it will be interesting to see how Rashid uses his variations of spin in the middle overs in a bid to rattle the opposition.

CSK vs GT head-to-head

Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans have faced off on four occasions since Gujarat’s IPL debut in 2022. GT hold a 3-1 advantage, with CSK’s only win over Hardik Pandya and Co having come in Qualifier 1 of this season’s IPL playoffs.

WTC Final: Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan likely to fly to England on 28 May, says report

Team India skipper Rohit Sharma and his Mumbai Indians (MI) teammate Suryakumar Yadav left for Mumbai in the wee hours of Saturday, following the team’s exit from the Indian Premier League (IPL), News18 reported. Ishan Kishan, too, left for the Maximum City from Ahmedabad on Saturday morning.

“Rohit and Surya left together very early from Ahmedabad on May 27, around 4 am. They both will be reaching Mumbai. Ishan also left a few hours back, around 11 am. Not sure whether Ishan is directly going to Mumbai, from where they will catch the flight to England,” a source in the know of things was quoted as saying by News18 CricketNext.

“I think all of them will head to Mumbai only because most of their luggage is still at Trident, Mumbai Indians’ team hotel. Together they will be less than 24 hours at home before hitting the road again,” the source added.

With India’s World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia scheduled to begin in June first week, certain players like Virat Kohli and Mohammed Siraj arrived in London earlier in the week, and Rohit and Kishan are also expected to fly to England on Sunday (28 May).

With Suryakumar, however, not in the main squad, he could fly to England on a later date.

“Rohit and Ishan are most likely leaving on the 28th, early morning, for England. Surya also could leave with them at the same time but since he is not in the main squad, he could also travel at a later date,” a source with a knowledge of the team’s travel, said.

There were some injury concerns during MI’s 62-run defeat to Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2023 Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad on Friday, including that of Ishan Kishan. Kishan injured his left eye after being hit by MI teammate Chris Jordan’s elbow while fielding. Kishan later did not come out to bat and was later replaced by Vishnu Vinod as a concussion substitute.

However, the source added that there was nothing much to worry regarding Kishan’s injury.

“Ishan is doing well after that injury last night. Shouldn’t be any problem whatsoever,” said the source.

The IPL 2023 final between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings is scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad on Sunday, while the WTC Final will be held at The Oval in London from 7 June.
