'Cricket is always surprising': Jasprit Bumrah as 23 wickets fall at Newlands

India and South Africa played out a dramatic opening day in the second Test at Newlands in Cape Town. A staggering 23 wickets fell on the opening day’s action on Wednesday – a record most in South Africa. In fact, Test cricket has only witnessed more wickets fall on the first day just once – way back in 1902.

Opting to bat first, South Africa were bowled out for just 55 runs – their lowest first innings score since they were brought back to Test cricket after the apartheid.

In reply, India had built a 98 run lead, to stand on 153 runs, at the loss of four wickets, before collapsing horribly. India, trailing the two match Test series 0-1, lost six wickets without adding to their score. As a result, India could only muster a 98-run lead.

Speaking about the dramatic day at Newlands, Jasprit Bumrah, who took two wickets in the opening innings, told SuperSport, “Cricket is always surprising. When we saw the wicket in the morning, didn’t expect it to be an action-packed day like it was. Was an interesting day of cricket.”

“We believe in our bowling line-up, lot of them have just started playing Tests. Spoke about consistency and bowling in partnerships, doing the basics right again and again. Very happy we were able to do that.”

South Africa reached 62/3 at close having brought their deficit down to 36 runs. “Lots of work still to be done. I made my Test debut here, so this ground will always be special. If we do the things right, the result will be in our favour,” Bumrah added having taken his wickets tally to three at the conclusion of the day.
