At the age of 12, Bihar’s Vaibhav Suryavanshi triggered a buzz having made his Ranji Trophy debut. Vaibhav, at the age of 12 years and 284 days, became the fourth-youngest Indian cricketer to make his debut in first-class cricket. He achieved this feat during a Ranji Trophy game against Mumbai at the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna.
The record for the youngest debutant in Indian first-class cricket goes back to the 1942-43 season. Back then, Alimuddin made his debut at the age of 12 years and 73 days. Alimuddin, who was from Ajmer, played for Rajputana in the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Baroda at the Maharaja Pratapsingh Coronation Gymkhana in Baroda.

Vaibhav had previously represented Bihar in the 2023 edition of the Cooch Behar Trophy. He was in brilliant form against Jharkhand having scored 151 runs off 128 balls. His blistering knock comprised 22 fours and three sixes. In the same match, he also contributed with a score of 76. He then took part in a quadrangular series involving India U-19 A, India U-19 B, England U-19 and Bangladesh U-19. Vaibhav had registered scores of 53, 74, 0, 41 and 0 in the tournament.
His father, Sanjeev Suryavanshi, expressed pride in the youngster’s achievements. Sanjeev said that his son took part in six major tournaments over the past year. Sanjeev, a cricket enthusiast himself, noticed his son’s interest in the sport at the age of five and actively supported his cricketing journey. Under his guidance, Vaibhav started playing along with senior players at the age of 10, displaying impressive performances.
Vaibhav started his training in Samastipur and later in Patna, where the teenage star’s hard work paid off, leading to his early entry into the Ranji Trophy squad for Bihar.
Before reaching the age of 13, only nine players had made their debut in first-class cricket. The remaining individuals who accomplished this feat include Aaqib Javed (1984-85), Mohammad Akram (1968-69), Rizwan Sattar (1985-86), Salimuddin (1954-55), and Qasim Feroze (1970-71).
