LIVE Cricket Score, Australia vs South Africa, T20 World Cup 2023 Final: Proteas aim to halt Aussie juggernaut

17:47 (IST)

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the 2023 T20 World Cup final, with defending champions Australia taking on hosts South Africa at Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday. The Southern Stars will aim to extend their domination on the sport with a sixth world title in the shortest format while the Proteas will aim to script history by achieving something that no South African team, men or women, has achieved at the senior level before — win a World Cup. They already have achieved a first by reaching the final, and are now one step away from the ultimate glory.

Australia vs South Africa preview: South Africa’s women cricketers will go where none of their male counterparts have gone when they contest their very first World Cup final at Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday.

The hosts reached the final of the women’s T20 World Cup with a thrilling six-run win over England but now they will be up against Australia, a team of proven World Cup winners, who have won five of the previous six T20 finals.

The Aussies also had a tight semi-final when they edged past India by just five runs but they are loaded with experience which their captain Meg Lanning believes will help them in the pressure moments.

“Having been in pressure situations before helps a lot,” said Lanning on Saturday.

“We’re not going to be the team that everyone’s cheering for.

“We’re expecting South Africa to come out to play to their full strength and they’re riding a wave of emotion as well.

“I expect an incredible atmosphere and an incredible game at an amazing venue. It’s a World Cup final and there’s nowhere to hide.”

Lanning said there would be pressure on both teams.

“It comes down to holding your nerve under pressure,” she said.

Following South Africa’s dramatic upset of England in Friday’s semi-final, there were queues outside the ground on Saturday as new-found followers of the women’s game sought to buy tickets.

That win was accompanied by scenes of unbridled joy as 7500 spectators inside the ground cheered them on.

Sunday’s crowd is expected to be considerably bigger with the game marking a watershed moment at an iconic venue that hosted its first men’s Test match in 1889.

No South African team, men or women, had previously gone beyond the semi-finals of either a 50-overs or T20 World Cup.

“We’ve always known we had the ability to get to a final, I think it was just to get through that semi-final,” said South African captain Sune Luus.

‘The Best v The Best’

While Australia stormed through the group stages before being pushed all the way by India in the semi-finals, South Africa lost two of their first three games.

They looked anything but championship contenders when they lost the tournament opening match against Sri Lanka and they went down by six wickets in a group match against Australia in Gqeberha.

“We were 20, 30, 40 runs short in that game,” said Luus.

“We know they (Australia) have a very strong batting line-up and they bat extremely deep.

“Whether we bat first or second we know we have to put up a good fight. We know they’re going to keep fighting. We saw that in their semi-final against India.”

Luus said South Africa had a strong pace bowling attack and she expected an “even contest” between her bowlers and the Australia batters.

“It’s going to be the best in the world against the best in the world.”

Luus, 27, said the discussion before the semi-final had been on how to handle the big occasion.

“Everybody was hyped up and excited but we said before the game that the team that is the calmest is going to get over the finish line. I think tomorrow is going to be no different.”

Tazmin Brits, 32, who until the retirement of big-hitting Lizelle Lee last year was not an automatic choice for the team, made herself a national heroine by hitting top score of 68 and holding four catches in a remarkable display of big-match temperament.

She found herself on the front and back pages of Saturday’s newspapers.

“She’s got a lot of self-belief. It’s been years of hard work that finally came together,” said coach Hilton Moreeng.

Probable teams:

South Africa: Sune Luus (captain), Laura Wolvaardt, Tazmin Brits, Marizanne Kapp, Chloe Tryon, Anneke Bosch, Nadine de Klerk, Sinalo Jafta (wkt), Shabnim Ismail, Ayabonga Khaka, Nonkululeko Mlaba

Ravichandran Ashwin warns England's 'Bazball' approach might falter in certain conditions

England’s revolutionary ‘Bazball’ style of playing cricket might have made them a force to be reckoned with in the Test format but Ravichandran Ashwin thinks the approach could backfire in certain conditions.

The term gained popularity last summer after the English team adopted an attacking style of cricket under new coach Brendon McCullum, whose nickname ‘Baz’ is the inspiration behind its name, and skipper Ben Stokes.

England have won 10 out of their last 11 Tests, often in remarkable fashion, since the change in leadership, including a 3-0 whitewash in Pakistan, and are currently on the verge of completing a 2-0 sweep in New Zealand.

“We now have a concept called Bazball. England is playing high-paced Test match cricket. They want to play a certain style of cricket. But in certain types of wicket, when you try and attack every ball, you will falter. There are both advantages and disadvantages to this approach,” Ashwin said in a video posted on his YouTube channel.

“Some will ask instead of defending and getting all out for 100, I will slog it out and get all out for 140. We will only know when the game pans out that the approach works or not. Sometimes, on the wicket, conditions need to be respected. If you respect the pitch and play accordingly, the pitch will also respect you. If you respect the pitch, it will pay you dividends,” added the senior Indian off-spinner with 463 Test wickets to his name.

England were the last team to beat India in a Test series on their own turf, stunning MS Dhoni’s men 2-1 in the 2012-13 tour. However, the side would go on to lose their next two assignments by margins of 4-0 and 3-1 respectively.

England travel to Bangladesh for a limited-overs tour after getting done with the New Zealand Tests, which incidentally are not part of the World Test Championship 2021-23 cycle. They face Australia in a home Ashes later this summer in what will be Stokes and McCullum’s biggest assignment yet.

Women's T20 World Cup Final: Australia vs South Africa time, TV channel, Live Streaming

South Africa will get their fairytale finish at home if they find a way to halt the Australian juggernaut in the Women’s T20 World Cup final on Sunday.

South Africa showed commendable fighting spirit to upset England in the semi-final but they will need to stitch together a perfect game to topple the mighty Australia, who are the record five-time champions and are in their seventh successive final.

South Africa have made rapid strides over the past 12 months and after making the semifinals of the ODI World Cup last year, they entered their maiden final of an ICC event on Friday.

In Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits, a former world junior javelin champion whose Olympic dream was shattered in 2012 due to a car accident, South Africa have one of the best opening pairings in the tournament.

They both go into the final in top form and are vital to the team’s chances against Australia who managed to beat India in the semifinals despite not playing their best game.

Australia had comfortably beaten South Africa in the group stage but they will be wary of them in the title clash especially with the crowd expected to play a key role.

Australia, who by far have been the most successful side in women’s cricket history, look good to extend their dominance. They have all bases covered and no total is safe when they are chasing.

India needed 39 runs off the last five overs but Australia did not give up and gave their 100 per cent on the field to wrest the game in their favour. Champion outfits find a way of winning even when things are not going their way and the Meg Lanning-led side is known for that.

Squads:

Australia: Meg Lanning (c), Alyssa Healy, Darcie Brown, Ashleigh Gardner, Kim Garth, Heather Graham, Grace Harris, Jess Jonassen, Alana King, Tahlia McGrath, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland and Georgia Wareham.

South Africa: Sune Luus (c), Annerie Dercksen, Marizanne Kapp, Lara Goodall, Ayabonga Khaka, Chloe Tryon, Nadine de Klerk, Shabnim Ismail, Tazmin Brits, Masabata Klaas, Laura Wolvaardt, Sinalo Jafta, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Anneke Bosch and Delmi Tucker.

Virat Kohli recalls daunting 2018 Edgbaston Test: '35,000 people booed the moment I entered'

Virat Kohli revealed how stepping up to bat during the England tour in 2018 proved challenging especially after the horror show four years earlier. During the 2014 series, Kohli scored just 134 runs from 10 innings – worst returns for a batter who played all five Tests.

“My heart was pumping because all I could think of was the flashes of 2014. I walked in and there were about 35,000 people at the stadium and they all started booing the moment I entered the field. My heart started beating faster. They have this amazing ability to create an environment where you feel like I have got no chance here,” recalled Kohli during an episode of RCB Podcast Season 2.

When India toured in England, Kohli was done in by England seamer James Anderson four times. On return to England in 2018, Kohli was a transfored batter and he produced 539 runs with two centuries and three fifties to emerge as the highest scorer in the series.

“I remember James Anderson was the guy running with the ball, and I was like, what are the odds here I am facing the first ball from him again after four years. In my mind, I was like ‘please just play the first ball and he bowled it at the fourth stump and I left that ball’. I became calm after that first ball and then I got dropped at 22. I could have got out on 22 in that innings but I got 149 and I didn’t look back from there, so that’s when you realised that you just can’t sit there and crib about things that didn’t go right. There are a lot of things that went right. So much weight was lifted from my shoulder,” he said.

Then 30 years old, Kohli was eager to turn things around that he signed a contract with county side Surrey but a neck injury during the IPL kept him out.

“I was going to play county cricket before the 2018 series. I was a bit nervous because I thought I needed to prepare more. But then I had a neck issue in 2018 I fell ill in one of the IPL games and I could not go there because It aggravated,” said Kohli.

Kohli, now 34, also recalled how then Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate AB de Villiers gave him valuable advice. “I spoke to him that I am feeling a bit jittery because I am not able to go and play in the county. He said this is not 2014, and you are not the same player. You would be absolutely fine. I became very calm after that,” he said.

The right handed batter revealed he kept pondering about his own journey, his own inclination to prove everyone else in 2014 rather than focus on the team. He acknowledged that played a role in the dreadful series.

“Before going to England in 2014, I had a good series at home against New Zealand. I scored a century and a 70. I was high on confidence.

“When we went to England in 2014, I thought I needed to prove myself here – that was wrong in the first place. Because I went there to prove something that I can play in these conditions and not go there to, kind of, make my team win, that wasn’t my focal point. My main aim was (that) I need to prove that I can play here. I was always under pressure. It was a very bad phase,” he said.

Even as Kohli returned to runs after the 2014 England series, the question mark remained that he hadn’t performed in tough, seam friendly conditions.

“From 2014 to 2018, I did everything everywhere in the world and performed in every condition. But people just held on to one thing: ‘Oh! But what about England?’ That’s when I realised that probably I played cricket at a level which I’m certainly very proud of. I have won so many games for the team, but people are constantly looking at things which have not gone right,” said Kohli.
