India vs New Zealand: Sundar pulls off one-handed stunner off his own bowling to remove Chapman; watch video

Washington Sundar was the talk of the town for a brief period during the first T20I between India and New Zealand in Ranchi, taking a stunning one-handed catch off his own bowling to dismiss Mark Chapman.

New Zealand had got off to a brisk start after being put to bat by India, but Washington Sundar struck twice inside the powerplay phase to dismiss Finn Allen (35) and Mark Chapman (0).

Finn Allen was caught by Suryakumar Yadav at deep mid-on, but Sundar’s dismissal of Chapman was what caught the eye of many.

With turn on offer, Sundar unleashed a full length-ball to Chapman, who pushed forward in defence, only to hit the ball back to Sundar, who dived in full length to his right to take a one-handed stunner.

You can watch the video here:

Fifties from Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell later led the Kiwis to 176/6, setting up a target of 177 runs to win.

WPL a significant step in creating more opportunities for women through sports, say Gujarat Giants owners

The women’s version of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has finally become a reality after years of deliberation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) set the wheels in motion by announcing a broadcast deal with Viacom18 and later unveiled the five franchises that will be participating in the inaugural edition of what has formally been christened the ‘Women’s Premier League’.

Among the five successful bidders for WPL franchises is Adani Sportsline, part of the Adani Group, that has acquired the Ahmedabad-based team, calling it the Gujarat Giants, for a sum of Rs 1,289 crore.

Adani Sportsline also owns the Gulf Giants and Gujarat Giants teams in the DP World ILT20 and Legends League Cricket respectively, as well as the Gujarat Giants in the Pro Kabaddi League, where they finished runners-up in the fifth and sixth seasons.

“The Indian women’s cricket team has been doing exceptionally well — and a cricket league for women is a significant step in creating more opportunities for women through sports,” Pranav Adani, Director, Adani Enterprises, said in a release.

“Cricket is an inseparable part of the country’s fabric and Adani Sportsline was keen to begin their association with the sport with the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League. While I wish every other franchise the very best, I look forward to the Gujarat Giants standing out as the top team in this new, exciting league.”

Besides Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Lucknow are the other cities that will be represented in the inaugural edition of the WPL. Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore are some of the Indian Premier League franchises that have decided to expand their presence to the women’s league, while the Lucknow franchise went to Capri Global.

EXCLUSIVE: Mithali Raj Set to Join Gujarat Giants As Mentor for Women’s Premier League

Former India captain Mithali Raj is set to join new Women’s Premier League franchise Gujarat Giants as mentor for the upcoming season. It’s been reliably learnt that the 40-year-old was keen to play in the tournament but lack of interest from the franchises forced her to take up the mentor role with the Gujarat unit.

“Mithali Raj was keen to play but she is now all set to mentor the Gujarat team for the inaugural Women’s Premier League,” a source close to the developments told News18 Cricketnext.

“Yes there was interest from her side to play, particularly for the team based out of Mumbai but things didn’t quite materialise the way she would have wanted and a lucrative role with the Gujarat team came her way. It’s always good to have a presence of someone like Mithali in the camp. The vast experience across formats will only benefit the team she is going to be a part of,” the source added.

Mithali has featured in 89 T20Is for the country and accumulated 2,364 runs at a healthy average of 37.52. She last played a T20I game for India back in 2019 against England at home. She continued to play ODI and Tests before announcing retirement in June 2022. Mithali has been the face of India women’s cricket for decades now and her participation in the Women’s Premier League will only boost the brand value and connect with the masses.

The right-hander kept her WPL options open after announcing retirement and has finally found home in one of the five teams for the inaugural edition.

The Adani Group bought the Ahmedabad franchise with the bid of Rs 1,289 crores – the highest – at the auction held by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday.

The Gujarat Giants cricket franchise joins Adani Sportsline’s family of teams like the Gulf Giants in the DP World ILT20 and the Gujarat Giants in the Pro Kabaddi League.

The five successful bidders for the inaugural season of WPL include Adani Sportsline Pvt Ltd (Ahmedabad), Indiawin Sports Pvt Ltd (Mumbai), Royal Challengers Sports Pvt. Ltd (Bangalore), JSW GMR Cricket Pvt Ltd (Delhi) and Capri Global Holdings Pvt Ltd. (Lucknow).

‘Historic day’

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah termed January 25, 2023 as a “historic day” in cricket as bids for the Women’s Premier League broke the records of inaugural men’s IPL back in 2008.

“Today is a historic day in cricket as the bidding for teams of inaugural #WPL broke the records of the inaugural Men’s IPL in 2008! Congratulations to the winners as we garnered Rs.4669.99 Cr in total bid,” Shah tweeted.

He added, “This marks the beginning of a revolution in women’s cricket and paves the way for a transformative journey ahead not only for our women cricketers but for the entire sports fraternity. The #WPL would bring necessary reforms in women’s cricket and would ensure an all-encompassing ecosystem that benefits each and every stakeholder.”

Earlier this month, Viacom 18 Media Private Limited won the consolidated bid for media rights (TV + Digital) for the WPL from 2023 to 2027. The media group won the rights with a bid of Rs 951 crore. The auction for the WPL are likely to be held in the month of February and the tournament is set to start in the first week of March this year.

Fireball cinnamon whisky does not have whisky, lawsuit alleges

Illinois: The makers of the infamous whisky named Fireball cinnamon are facing a lawsuit that claims there is no whisky in the miniature bottles of the hot beverage.

To the dismay of Anna Marquez, the Illinois lady who is suing Sazerac Company, the creator of Fireball, for “misleading” packaging, the beverage is actually a malt beverage made to taste like whisky.

The labelling on the tiny 99-cent bottles of Fireball Cinnamon, according to the class-action lawsuit Marquez filed earlier this month, is misleadingly identical to the labelling on bottles of the company’s other product, Fireball Cinnamon Whisky.

According to the company’s website, Fireball Cinnamon Whisky has 33% alcohol by volume while Fireball Cinnamon has 16.5%.

According to the lawsuit, it was “an easy error to make, and one that the manufacturer intended,” for customers to believe that the little bottles marked “Fireball Cinnamon” contained whisky.

“Even though their labels are nearly identical, what people were buying in non-alcohol retailers” was not whisky at all,” reads the lawsuit.

Although it is lawful for the business to use the brand name “Fireball” for both drinks, the lawsuit claims that both federal and state laws forbid giving the public a “misleading impression” overall.

The lawsuit criticises comparable labelling as well as the size of the text on Fireball Cinnamon’s label that lists its ingredients.

The phrase “Malt Beverage With Natural Whisky & Other Flavors and Carmel Color” is allegedly written in the “smallest allowable size,” according to the lawsuit.

The complaint also claims that the term “natural whisky” causes confusion about the product.

The phrase “With Natural Whisky & Other Flavors” is a brilliant turn of phrase since it allows consumers who struggle to comprehend it to understand how Natural Whisky differs from Other Flavors.

Customers “will believe the Product is a malt beverage with natural whisky and added flavours,” claims the lawsuit.

To put it another way, customers can mistakenly think that a distinct ingredient of natural whisky is added to the beverage rather than realising that simply “whisky tastes” are there.

The Fireball firm explains the distinctions between its whisky and malt products on its website.

The website says that there are two main distinctions between the Fireball Cinnamon and Fireball Whisky labels:
“Any package with Fireball ‘Cinnamon Whisky’ on the front label is our whisky-based product.”

“Any product with Fireball “Cinnamon” on the front label, without “Whisky,” is either our wine- or malt-based beverage,” the company says.

As per a CBS news report, despite being the only plaintiff, Marquez’s action aims to compensate anyone who has bought Fireball Cinnamon in the following states: Illinois, North Dakota, Wyoming, Alaska, Arizona, Idaho,
Mississippi, Iowa, South Carolina, Kansas, Arkansas, and Utah.

India vs New Zealand: Men in Blue aim to carry ODI form over to T20Is against Black Caps

Team India will look to maintain their winning run against New Zealand, albeit in a different format, when they take on the Black Caps in the first of three T20Is in Ranchi on Friday.

India have largely been victorious in the new year; they began the year by beating Sri Lanka 2-1 in a three-T20I series in Hardik Pandya’s first full series as captain at home. That was followed by identical 3-0 sweeps against the Lankans and the Black Caps as the Men in Blue maintained their stranglehold on visiting teams on their home turf.

As has been the case with India’s squads for recent T20 assignments, Test and ODI skipper Rohit Sharma will be absent, as will Virat Kohli and other seniors such as Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and KL Rahul, who only recently got married and will be back in action only during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

In a year where the ODI format takes centre-stage with a home World Cup looming, there isn’t much context for T20Is other than testing out various options in the lineup keeping next year’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the United States in mind.

Prithvi Shaw comeback?

The focus once again shifts to the top three in the absence of Rohit and Virat for the T20Is. With Gill currently in the form of his life after scoring 360 runs in the three one-dayers, it is the backup options where things get interesting.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who had been next in line for the opener’s slot, has been ruled out of the series with a wrist injury. Prithvi Shaw, who has long been overlooked by the Men in Blue, will be busy praying for an opportunity, which might be handed to him if Ishan Kishan produces another low score or two or the series is sealed with a game to spare.

Shaw, whose last appearance for India was during the tour of Sri Lanka in July 2021, has been in superb form of late for Mumbai across formats — finishing the second-highest run-scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with 332 runs at a strike rate of 181.42. He had also scored a staggering 379 during the Ranji Trophy match against Assam at nearly run-a-ball.

While Shaw certainly has the firepower to make the most of an opportunity handed to him and make life for the selectors and the team management even tougher, India T20I skipper Pandya backed Gill as the first-choice opener alongside Kishan, hinting at the fact that Shaw would have to wait for his turn.

“Shubman has done well and will start the series. The way he is batting and was already in the team,” Pandya said in a press conference on the eve of the first T20I in Ranchi.

Black Caps’ bowling a worry

A major worry for the Black Caps, who have had the wood over the Men in Blue as far as knockout matches in ICC events is concerned, is their bowling department heading into the T20Is. They ended up conceding scores of 349 and 385 when bowling first during the ODI series and barely offered any resistance after getting bundled out for 108 the only time they got to bat first.

And the manner in which Rohit and Gill toyed with the Kiwi attack in the third ODI during their 212-run opening partnership, it appeared as if the hosts would end up becoming the first team to breach the 500-barrier in ODIs.

New Zealand, who are being captained by left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner in the T20Is after being led by Tom Latham in the 50-over games, will hope express pacer Lockie Ferguson gets more support from the bowling unit. More importantly for the visitors, leg-spinner Ish Sodhi appears to have regained his fitness, and his return to the XI after missing out in the one-dayers could be a big boost as far as their hopes of opening their account on the tour is concerned.

India: Hardik Pandya (c), Suryakumar Yadav (vc, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, Jitesh Sharma, Prithvi Shaw, Shivam Mavi, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mukesh Kumar, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal.

New Zealand: Mitchell Santner (c), Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Dane Cleaver, Benjamin Lister, Michael Rippon, Henry Shipley, Ish Sodhi, Blair Tickner, Jacob Duffy, Lockie Ferguson.

Venue: JSCA Stadium, Ranchi, Jharkhand.

Australian Open 2023: Elena Rybakina, with family watching, into another Slam final

Melbourne: The conditions were far from perfect for the big hitters. It was windy, chilly, and the evening temperature had dipped to 15 degrees Celsius in Melbourne. Playing her first evening match of the fortnight, Elena Rybakina, who had struck 35 aces coming into the semi-final against Victoria Azarenka on Thursday, was finding the courts slower.

She had jointly struck the biggest serve of the Australian Open (among women) at 195 kmph but on the night, the best she produced was 189 kmph. Even more impressively, 53% of her first serves had gone unreturned. That dwindled to 42% as the balls got slower and the evening became bitter.

“Today it was a bit tougher for me because it was different conditions. I couldn’t play really aggressive tennis. The ball was not going so much,” she said.

It made no difference in the end as Wimbledon champion Rybakina progressed to the Australian Open final for the first time – beating two-time champion Victoria Azarenka 7-6, 6-3 on Rod Laver Arena.

The Moscow-born Kazakh needed an hour and 41 minutes to get past the 2012 and 2013 champion Azarenka who had chances on her racket but couldn’t make it count.

Rybakina has now beaten three Grand Slam champions in a row having already accounted for World No 1 Iga Swiatek and 2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko. The run also includes last year’s finalist Danielle Collins.

In the final she will face an in-form Aryna Sabalenka, who will be seeking her first major final, having beaten unseeded Magda Linette 7-6, 6-2 in the second semi-final.

The 23-year-old Rybakina admitted to not feeling as nervous as she did last year at Wimbledon – when she beat Ons Jabeur in the final for her first major title. “For sure, I got a lot of experience from Wimbledon and, to be honest, I just want to come on court and really enjoy the moment, enjoy the atmosphere,” Rybakina said on what’s to come ahead on Saturday.

“This time I think I was focusing more on the match, what I have to do, and maybe not to think what’s going to come or what’s going to happen around and so on,” she added.

What’s going to be new from that moment is the presence of her parents and sister. Rybakina’s parents have been in Australia throughout the fortnight, unlike Wimbledon when they were denied a visa to the United Kingdom owing to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Also present is her sister who got a special mention in the on-court ceremony. “They are actually here, here from the beginning, so I’m super happy,” said Rybakina.

“It’s first time when everybody is here, parents and sister. So really amazing, and I’m looking forward to the next match to play in front of everybody, especially my parents,” she said.

The 22nd seed recalled her sister travelling with her to the WTA tournament in Doha and then to Wimbledon. She emphasised that they would be proud of her irrespective of how things go in the final.

“Yeah, for sure it’s great for them. I mean, I didn’t even talk with them yet. I’m sure they’re happy. They don’t see me often, playing live, so I think this time, it’s a big result already. No matter how I play in the final, I think they’re very proud and happy,” she added.

It was also fitting that seven of the ‘Original 9’ members were honoured and sat courtside during the women’s semi-finals. Their pioneering $1 contracts in 1970 opened the path for the millions now offered in women’s tennis. “I want to say a big ‘Thank you’ from the players, because it’s unbelievable what you’ve done for us, for the new generation,” Rybakina said.

“It means a lot.”

For the record, the women’s champion will take home $2,975,000 and the runner-up will bag a check of $1,625,000.
