IPL 2023: Kane Williamson ruled out of entire season with knee injury

Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League after the star right-hander injured his right knee while fielding during the season opener between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings on Friday. The extent of the injury is still unknown but those tracking developments from close quarters informed the 32-year-old will miss the entire season.

“It’s looking bad. Safe to say he is out of the remainder of the tournament,” a source close to developments told News18 CricketNext.

Williamson took the nasty blow in 13th over of the CSK innings when Ruturaj Gaikwad went big towards the square-leg region. The Kiwi jumped and stretched across to his right to keep the ball in play and prevent the six but lost his balance and fell on his right knee. The GT support staff rushed to his aid and Williamson, looking in serious pain, was carried off the field.

The right-hander didn’t return to bat and was replaced by Impact Player Sai Sudarshan at No 3. Defending champions Gujarat Titans chased down the 179-run target in 19.2 overs, thanks to a fluent hand by Shubman Gill (63) at top of the order and useful contributions from Vijay Shankar (27) and Wriddhiman Saha (25).

The No 3 spot

After getting him for Rs 2 crore at the mini-auction in December last year, GT head coach Ashish Nehra was surprised to get the Kiwi at the base price and said “Kane brings a lot to the table”.

“Somebody like Williamson will bring in so much experience. He is a proven player, didn’t have a couple of good IPL seasons but IPL is so fast-paced that it takes very little time for thinking and perception to change. For us, if he would have gone for much more, we would have still gone for Kane Williamson. We believe in that player and wanted to have that mix of experience and youth. Kane brings a lot to the table for any team. We are privileged that we could have him, and on top of that at base price,” Nehra had said at a media interaction in Kochi.

With Williamson ruled out, GT could well go back to Sudarshan, who batted at No 3 as Impact Player last evening, for the spot as the left-hander has had a brilliant run with Tamil Nadu in the domestic circuit and looked good during his 17-ball 22 in the 179-run chase at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

There is no official word from the Gujarat Titans camp on the extent of Williamson’s injury or a replacement but even if they don’t announce a replacement, the Hardik Pandya-led unit has enough fire in the reserves to make up for the right-hander’s absence this season.

Gujarat Titans squad: Abhinav Manohar, Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya(c), Rahul Tewatia, Matthew Wade(w), Rashid Khan, Shivam Mavi, Alzarri Joseph, Mohammed Shami, Yash Dayal, Srikar Bharat, Wriddhiman Saha, Sai Sudharsan, Urvil Patel, Vijay Shankar, Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore, Odean Smith, Jayant Yadav, Joshua Little, Darshan Nalkande, Noor Ahmad, Mohit Sharma and Pradeep Sangwan.

LSG vs DC, IPL 2023: Under-pressure KL Rahul and all-round Lucknow face Delhi Capitals challenge

Delhi Capitals kick off their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday with a different set of challenges confronting both sides. DC are without regular captain Rishabh Pant, who is still recovering from the car accident injuries, while LSG skipper KL Rahul is in the middle of the toughest phase of his career. Lucknow are also without pacer Mohsin Khan, at least for the initial matches, who was one of their star performers last season.

By the look of it, neither DC nor LSG look like outfits that give you the vibe of a champion side like Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians or for that matter Gujarat Titans. However, in the shortest format, equations could change at the drop of a hat as the margin that separates a master stroke from a harakiri is as thin as a thread.

So when DC begin its journey on Saturday evening at the Ekana Stadium, it will be an Australian, who will hold the key to the kind of start that the franchise expects.

And that Australian isn’t stocky New South Wales man David Warner, who is leading the side but the giant from Western Australia, who has provided some sort of a trailer during the ODI series against India with 12 sixes in three games — 11 of which came in the first two encounters.

Marsh has to fire

It seems that Mitchell Marsh has got a hang of Indian tracks and that can only augur well for DC.

Marsh, who hasn’t bowled his medium pacers for some time, will be a vital cog in Powerplay overs if Warner and his flamboyant opening partner Prithvi Shaw, fail to get going.

DC head coach Ricky Ponting expects a lot from Shaw and on his day, he can butcher any attack. Shaw also likes to work with pace of deliveries and Mark Wood in the opposition ranks, with a speed in excess of 150 clicks, gives him that opportunity.

Warner has been a different beast in IPL and one of the league’s most influential players but his blazing blade is missing for some time and he is also coming back post elbow injury.

He hasn’t exactly looked in great rhythm but once the match starts, he could make everyone look and feel like a fool.

But with the sizzling Pant nursing a leg injury after a horrifying car accident, the DC middle-order save Rovman Powell, doesn’t inspire the highest confidence.

Axar Patel’s batting has gone to a different level in red ball cricket but there are no guarantees that the form will be replicated in the shortest format too.

Yash Dhull still doesn’t look ready for top-flight cricket and Sarfaraz Khan could be under immense pressure after being entrusted with the big gloves.

On top of that, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi and Mustafizur Rahaman’s absence from the first game due to national duty makes the bowling attack thin.

Ishant Sharma has looked completely out of rhythm while Khaleel Ahmed and Chetan Sakariya aren’t exactly pacers with intimidating qualities and lack the ability to win games of cricket singlehandedly. Mukesh Kumar, who is set for debut, is still untested at this level.

The eight overs between spinners Axar and Kuldeep Yadav will be very crucial for DC in the context of most games.

Targets for Rahul

But the bigger point is whether Rahul, in his current form and mental frame of mind, be able to seize the night against a weak bowling attack? How much will Kyle Mayers be able to compensate for Quinton de Kock, who is also not unavailable due to national commitments? These are questions that begs answers.

In terms of ‘Impact Player’, Lucknow does have more variety at their disposal with someone like Amit Mishra, who could be used against Marsh or Powell. The rotund Mishra still has enough skills to stop batters in their tracks.

For DC, Ponting is probably mulling over using Mumbai’s Aman Khan as an ‘Impact Player’, having seen him at the nets.

But how LSG’s tournament pans out will depend on how the Indian trio of Krunal Pandya, Ayush Badoni and Deepak Hooda perform as Rs 16 crore investment Nicholas Pooran is known to blow hot and cold on numerous occasions.

For Rahul, it will no just be about the volume of runs scored but also about the kind of intent he is showing along with the consistency in strike rate, where it is not just about making up for lost deliveries towards the business end of the innings.

Teams (from):

Delhi Capitals: David Warner (c), Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, Manish Pandey, Rovman Powell, Rilee Rossouw, Sarfaraz Khan (wk), Phil Salt (wk), Abhishek Porel (wk), Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Lalit Yadav, Ripal Patel, Ishant Sharma, Chetan Sakariya, Khaleel Ahmed, Aman Hakim Khan, Praveen Dubey, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Yash Dhull, Mukesh Kumar, Vicky Ostwal.

Lucknow Super Giants: KL Rahul (c and wk), Kyle Mayers, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, Amit Mishra, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Naveen ul Haq, Ayush Badoni, Avesh Khan, Karan Sharma, Yudhvir Charak, Yash Thakur, Romario Shepherd, Mark Wood, Swapnil Singh, Manan Vohra, Daniel Sams, Prerak Mankad, Krishnappa Gowtham, Jaydev Unadkat, Marcus Stoinis, Ravi Bishnoi, Mayank Yadav.

The match starts at 7.30 pm. IST and will be broadcast live on Star Sports network TV channels and the JioCinema app and website.

'Dhoni should have...': Graeme Swann blasts CSK batting order after loss to Gujarat Titans

Graeme Swann has slammed Chennai Super Kings’ batting order as CSK’s batting proved to be the weak link in their opening night five-wicket loss to defending champions Gujarat Titans in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.

CSK’s Ruturaj Gaikwad gave his side a strong start despite wickets falling from the other end as the opener made 92 off just 50 balls. Chennai were 121/4 at the end of the 13th over when Ambati Rayudu departed. While the fans saw it as a perfect opportunity for Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni to come out to bat and take control of the innings, CSK decided to send Shivam Dube at No 6.

The move eventually backfired as the all-rounder scored 19 off 18 balls and CSK lost the momentum. Only 57 runs were scored in the last seven overs and Chennai finished on 178/7. Dhoni slammed a six and a four in the last over, making 14 off 7 but it proved to be too late as Gujarat eventually won the match, chasing down the target with four balls to spare.

Expert Swann slammed Dhoni’s decision to bat at No 8 instead of coming in early while analysing the game.

“CSK got their middle-order wrong, it cost them. Dhoni should have come in (in place of Dube),” Swann said on JioCinema.

Dube coming in to bat ahead of Jadeja and Dhoni had also surprised commentators AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, and Eoin Morgan who were on the air at that time.

IPL 2023: Impact player makes debut in GT vs CSK match

Talking about the loss, Dhoni after the match said: “We all knew there would be dew. We could have done a bit more with the batsman ship. Ruturaj (Gaikwad) was brilliant, he times the ball well and he’s a pleasure to watch. The way he picks his options, it is pleasing to watch. I think it’s important for youngsters to step in.”

CSK’s next match is against Lucknow Super Giants on 3 April at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
