Bundesliga: Breel Embolo's brace helps Borussia Monchengladbach reclaim top spot; Werder Bremen win late against Wolfsburg

Monchengladbach: Borussia Monchengladbach took back the top spot in the Bundesliga on Sunday after Breel Embolo scored two goals and set up another in a 4-2 win against Freiburg.

Gladbach now leads second-place Leipzig by a point in a welcome turnaround for the team after defeat to promoted Union Berlin last week. Next up is a different kind of test — Bayern Munich.

“I’m really, really satisfied today with the result and my team’s performance,” said Gladbach coach Marco Rose, who rested five players after Thursday’s Europa League win over Austrian side Wolfsberg.

One of those coming in to face sixth-place Freiburg was Embolo, who hadn’t played a full 90 minutes in the league since September.

With the score at 1-1, Embolo needed less than a minute of the second half to put Gladbach in front with his first Bundesliga goal in nearly two months.

The Switzerland striker hit a penalty against the post soon after, but redeemed himself by setting up Patrick Herrmann for Gladbach’s third in the 51st minute.

Freiburg scored through Lucas Höler and nearly leveled soon after but for a goal-line clearance. However, Embolo was there again to restore the two-goal lead in the 71st.

Recovering from the penalty miss to score again reflected Embolo’s character, Rose said.

“It speaks for him and the team,” he said. “He was working really hard and had a hand in creating a lot of really good situations.”

Earlier, Marcus Thuram had given Gladbach the lead in the third minute when Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken dropped a header, but the lead lasted just three minutes before Jonathan Schmid leveled with a free kick.

In near-freezing temperatures, Gladbach’s home fans were fired up by the win and their team’s largely unexpected challenge for its first German title in 43 years.

Rose promised the stadium would be “on fire” for Bayern’s visit in six days’ time. Last season’s champions lost on Saturday to Bayer Leverkusen.

Known for celebrating wins by waving a corner flag with his shirt on top, Thuram gave the ritual a seasonal twist after the final whistle on Sunday. He took a Christmas sweater in club colors and placed it atop the flag, which he then uprooted and waved in front of the fans.

Bremen Wins

Werder Bremen enjoyed a 3-2 win at Wolfsburg thanks to an 83rd-minute winning goal from Milot Rashica.

The Kosovo midfielder had earlier opened the scoring for Bremen. Wolfsburg came back from a goal down twice — first with Wout Weghorst’s goal to cancel out Rashica’s opener, and later when William made it 2-2 after Leonardo Bittencourt had scored for Bremen.

Weghorst nearly leveled again in added time, but Bremen keeper Jiri Pavlenka pushed his header away with his fingertips in an acrobatic dive.

Bremen moves up to 12th after ending an eight-game winless run in the Bundesliga, while Wolfsburg is ninth.

Arjun Kapoor on his approach to Panipat: Wanted to unlearn baggage that comes with period films

Arjun Kapoor will be next seen in Ashutosh Gowariker directed Panipat: The Great Betrayal, the actor’s first historic drama, based on the life of Sadashivrao Bhau, the Commander-in-Chief of the Maratha army in the third Battle of Panipat, fought in 1761 between the Marathas and the army of the Afghan ruler, Ahmad Shah Abdali.

"It's not something I would imagine doing but the fact that Ashutosh Gowariker could imagine me playing the part was exciting. I always had a wish, and sometimes, you just need to want something, and it happens. It has happened at a time when I think I was ready for it. If I had to choose to do a period drama or a period war film, there is no choice other than Ashu sir. From the first day he provided such a great foundation — costume, sets, ambience — he has done justice to the opulence, emotions and storytelling. Authenticity came from me after leaving all the baggage behind. That is why I was also in my own world shooting this film for a while,” says Arjun.

Arjun Kapoor in a still from Panipat

Donning royalty does not come easy. The actor followed his director’s instructions of letting himself loose rather than being too uptight. “My entire research came from the director. Had I started reading the history books, I would have had so many questions that lot of time would have been spent only answering those, and we shouldn’t have made the film. Then, I unlearned one basic principle to not overthink, and just come and do it because if your director gives you an authentic set-up, it will look right. Ashu sir told us to be human, be vulnerable. Any person who heads the army of 50,000 to 70,000 force, there will be a certain amount of vulnerability. He will always be a bit scared whether his several decisions taken for so many lives were right or wrong. My character couldn’t show his feelings but it might be visible in front of his wife. When he is alone, he might explore that moment of what he was doing. My job was to understand what Sadashiv Bhau must have gone through. It was all very fascinating,” says the actor.

“I wanted to unlearn the baggage that comes with period films that I have seen since I was a child. We all get consumed by certain behavioural patterns that come with the period film, and of course, that must have existed. They must be sitting in a certain way we don’t know. But eventually, they were human beings, they were warriors, they were yodhas. I wanted to be as casual as possible when it came to talking to his wife, or friends, or the way you conduct yourself to encourage your army. My job was to bring out human qualities. If you only look at the costume, drama, horse, elephant, scale... but to care about emotion was important so that you feel for Sadashivrao Bhau when he is going to the battlefield, when he is confused, dealing with his army, family... you have to live those emotions,” he adds.

As soon as the trailer was out earlier this month, there have been many comparisons and similarities drawn between Panipat and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. Besides, the situation also led to a meme session, comparing Arjun with Ranveer Singh, to which the Panipat actor, sounding a bit irritated, reasons, “There is nothing wrong in being critical. I am self-critical, and I am critical about other people’s work but we don’t have logic in conversations.

I just want to say that there are many stories from that era so do we stop making it? Then Tanhaji also cannot be made? After Dhoni (MS Dhoni: The Untold Story), we should not make biopic of any other cricketer? Don’t we have any right to watch Yuvraj’s (Singh) story now if we have to move ahead. After Uri, we should not make another war film because that is the epitome but there are many stories to be told. There is no end to comparisons. If I compare War with Hobbs & Shaw then I may find something missing but if I look at War on its own, I will enjoy it.

The criticism happens only on social media, (those) who have nothing else to do but compare. In fact, I believe negative conversation only makes a film better and better... like Kabir Singh and Housefull 4."

Moving on to his prep for Panipat, Arjun says the costumes were intense. "I had to wear 18 to 20 kilos of armour, and it took four people to get that on me. We had to shoot the climax outdoors in the summer heat of May because we wanted the sun to hit the metal and shine otherwise it would look fake. It may sound tough but in retrospect, when I see it on screen, it seems all worth it. But it was very restrictive because you can’t move your arm. I had to unlearn a few things in terms of physicality. Riding the horse with armour and doing action is also difficult. Early morning, I would go to Mahalaxmi to learn horse riding. Director had told me that I sit on the horse immediately after I come out of the van to get used to it. He knows better as he has done so many period films. But it was certainly more taxing for the stuntmen. We could go in our vanity van in between, and sit in A/C or we get a chair to sit but every time a fighter falls, he has to get up and do the take again.”

Considering it was a tough film to shoot, Arjun says he got good support from his co-star Kriti Sanon, who plays his screen wife Parvatibai. “We were entertaining each other quite a bit. Our mental state of mind, thought process... there is a certain nice similarity. What I like about Kriti is that she is a very good example for everybody that says the industry is a difficult place to make it. She conducts herself well, she is well-spoken, well-behaved, her values are still middle class, and she is doing all kinds of roles. She has not chased stardom per se,” he says.

Arjun Kapoor in character poster of Panipat. Twitter

Arjun and Kriti's off-screen camaraderie would probably reflect on screen as well. “Without her (character), I would not be Sadashivrao because she completes him, and that is the beauty of the story. This is probably one of the only stories in Hindi film narrative where the women also came to war. I have seen many war films. Women have always pined for their husbands, not knowing what is happening in the battlefield. And I love the line where she says, "Main sukh mein peeche rahoongi aur dukh mein tumhare aage aa jaungi." Parvatibai’s character is very important. She also picks up the sword in the end,” he says.

Arjun has had his share of ups and downs in his career. It was a good start for him with Ishaqzaade (2012), following up with the likes of Gunday and the Rs 100-crore superhit 2 States. Then there were average grossers like Ki & Ka, Half Girlfriend, and Mubarakaan but a couple of his previous releases, like Namaste England and India's Most Wanted, met with a poor response at the box office. So how pivotal is the historical drama at this stage of his career? “Well, who doesn’t like a hit? I am one of those fortunate few who have seen highs and lows. I am the person that I am because of those lows, more than my highs. The amount of it (Panipat) doing well is something I can’t quantify. What I would like to believe is if the last few films of mine have disappointed people who go and pay money to watch my films, I hope that this film doesn’t disappoint them. That is the minimum. I would like credibility, and that is something that is not earned by numbers. It is earned by people watching your film and liking it. Then it is film’s destiny,” he signs off.

Serie A: Ronaldo rescues point for Juventus against Sassuolo; Lautaro Martinez's brace helps Inter Milan reach top

Rome: A teenage goalkeeper restricted Juventus to a 2-2 draw at home to Sassuolo on Sunday which dropped the eight-time defending champion into second place.

Juventus needed Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty to secure a point against Sassuolo before Inter Milan beat Spal 2-1 to move a point above the Bianconeri in the Serie A table.

Juventus needed Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty to secure a point against Sassuolo. AP

Sassuolo’s first-choice goalkeeper Gianluca Pegolo was recovering from surgery and reserve Andrea Consigli was also injured, so 18-year-old Stefano Turati was handed his debut.

Turati’s youth was highlighted by the appearance of veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon at the other end.

The 41-year-old Buffon had made 160 Serie A appearances before Turati was even born.

“Buffon told me “very well done,” it was an honor to play against him, the idol of all children. As a kid, I used to watch him,” Turati said.

“I don’t know what to say, there’s too many emotions, I feel like I’m in a bubble ... I’m going to call my mum now.”

Juventus took the lead in the 20th minute through a long-range Leonardo Bonucci snapshot but it lasted just three minutes before Jeremie Boga rushed onto Francesco Caputo’s assist and chipped it over Buffon.

Caputo got on the scoresheet two minutes into the second half after a series of defensive errors from Juventus.

That appeared to jolt Juventus into action and Turati needed an impressive save to keep out Ronaldo’s free kick. He later called it his most difficult save of the match.

The young goalkeeper was powerless to keep out Ronaldo’s penalty in the 69th after Filippo Romagna had fouled Paulo Dybala.

Turati did well to withstand the late siege by the Bianconeri.

Lautaro at the double

Lautaro Martínez scored his second brace of the week to send Inter top of the table.

The Argentina forward had scored two in Wednesday’s Champions League victory at Slavia Prague and he added another two in the first half on Sunday.

That took the 22-year-old Martínez’s tally to eight in Serie A this season.

Mattia Valoti pulled one back for Spal five minutes after the interval.

“We’ve been working since day one to cause our opponents problems. We’re certainly doing a great job, but we’ve only played 14 games,” Inter coach Antonio Conte said. “When a team like Juventus drops points, you need to make sure that you make the most of that. But we need to look at ourselves, we need to keep moving down this path of growth.

“We have to give even more and make the most of this positive enthusiasm, and we have to manage games like today’s better. Just one unlucky moment would have been enough to slip to a draw in a match where we deserved nothing but a win.”

Other matches

Ciro Immobile remains at the top of the goalscoring charts after netting two in Lazio’s 3-0 win over Udinese.

The Italy forward has scored 17 league goals this season, seven more than Inter’s Romelu Lukaku, who is second in the standings.

Lazio remained third, seven points off top spot.

Napoli’s winless run extended to eight matches after it lost 2-1 at home to Bologna.

Fernando Llorente had what would have been a stoppage-time equalizer ruled out on video review for a very marginal offside.

Elsewhere, Theo Hernández scored two minutes from time to send AC Milan to a 1-0 win at Parma.

It was only Milan’s second win in seven matches.

Roma won 3-1 at Hellas Verona to move fourth, three points above Cagliari, which hosts Sampdoria on Monday.

La Liga: Lionel Messi fires Barcelona to top of league; Sevilla stay close with win over Leganes

Madrid: Atlético Madrid’s ordeal against Barcelona continues in the Spanish league.

Lionel Messi made up for a lackluster performance by scoring in the 86th minute on Sunday, giving Barcelona a 1-0 win at Atlético and extending the Catalan team’s unbeaten run against the Madrid rival to 19 league matches.

Lionel Messi celebrates after scoring against Atletico Madrid. AP

“It’s always a big advantage to have Messi in even games like these,” Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said.

Messi struck with a low left-footed shot from outside the area after being set up by Luis Suárez to keep Barcelona unbeaten against Atlético for nine years.

“We played a great match, but when Leo shows up he can make a difference,” Atlético forward Saúl Ñíguez said. “It’s incredibly easy for him to do these things, that’s why he is the best.”

It was Messi’s 30th career goal against Atlético, which hadn’t lost at home in 17 matches in all competitions.

“Messi appeared out of the match for a long time, but when he had a chance he broke free and scored a great goal,” Atlético coach Diego Simeone said.

The victory put Barcelona back at the top of the league above Real Madrid — which won at Alavés on Saturday — on goal difference.

Atlético dropped to sixth place, six points behind Barcelona and Real Madrid which have a game in hand after their October clásico was postponed until Dec. 18 because of a separatist rally in the Catalan capital.

Sevilla stayed third after beating last-place Leganés 1-0 earlier Sunday, while Real Sociedad is in fourth place after routing Eibar 4-1 on Saturday.

“The league is very long, we have to keep working to stay close to the leaders,” Simeone said.

The match marked Antoine Griezmann’s return to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium after being transferred to Barcelona at the end of last season. He was loudly jeered by most Atlético fans nearly every time he touched the ball. The France striker had a quiet performance and never posed a significant threat.

Atlético had most of the chances at the Metropolitano, but both teams squandered good opportunities throughout the match.

Each side hit the woodwork in the first half, and both goalkeepers — Atlético’s Jan Oblak and Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen — made some good saves to keep the game scoreless.

Messi broke the deadlock after an exchange with Suárez, whose perfect touch just outside the box set up the playmaker’s well-placed low shot.

Atlético’s last league win over Barcelona was in February 2010, a 2-1 victory at the now demolished Vicente Calderón Stadium. It hadn’t lost at the Metropolitano since a game against Real Madrid in February.

Barcelona has won 14 matches against Atlético since that loss in 2010, with five draws. Atlético’s last win against Barcelona in all competitions was a 2-1 result in the quarterfinals of the 2015-16 Champions League. Atlético’s worst streak against a single club is a 23-match winless run against Real Madrid from 2000 to 2013.

Sevilla stay close

Sevilla beat Leganés to keep pace with the leaders.

Brazilian defender Diego Carlos scored in the 63rd to give the team its fifth straight win in all competitions.

Julen Lopetegui’s squad hasn’t lost in 10 matches in all competitions, since a 4-0 rout at Barcelona in the league.

Leganés is at the bottom of the 20-team standings with six points from 15 matches. It hasn’t won in five consecutive league games, with four losses and a draw. Three of the losses came against Real Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla.

Athletic win again

Athletic Bilbao beat Granada 2-0 at home for its fourth straight victory.

Raúl García scored from a penalty kick in the 41st and Yuri Berchiche sealed the win in the 83rd at the San Mamés Stadium, putting Athletic in fifth place with 26 points, five behind Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Granada dropped to 10th place, with 21 points.

Home strrugles

Espanyol remained winless in eight home matches in the league this season after a 4-2 loss to 10-man Osasuna, which played without defender Facundo Roncaglia from the 52nd because of a second yellow card for dangerous play.

Espanyol, which has lost four of its last five league games, stayed second to last with nine points. Osasuna, which had one win in its last four league games, jumped to ninth place.

Also, seventh-place Getafe routed 11th-place Levante 4-0 will all goals coming in the second half.

Premier League: Freddie Ljungberg fails to break Arsenal's winless streak; Manchester United held to disappointing draw

London: Leicester continued another improbable Premier League title run with a last-gasp 2-1 win over Everton on Sunday, while Arsenal great Freddie Ljungberg couldn’t end the Gunners’ winless streak in his first game as interim manager.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s 94th-minute winner completed a comeback victory for second-place Leicester, which is eight points off league leader Liverpool and three ahead of Manchester City.

Arsenal interim manager Freddie Ljungberg gestures on the touchline during the Premier League match at Carrow Road, Norwich. AP

Leicester fans got another boost as manager Brendan Rodgers appeared to brush off speculation linking him to the vacant Arsenal job.

“Yes, very much so,” he told BBC radio when asked if he wanted to stay. “I'm at a great club. I absolutely love it here.”

Earlier, Ljungberg got off to a rocky start as a double from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang salvaged a 2-2 draw for Arsenal at Norwich.

Arsenal’s first game since the firing of Unai Emery as coach extended its winless run to an eighth match in all competitions.

Manchester United is another big club struggling this season, and that continued in a home 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

Foxes on prowl

Leicester didn’t play like title contenders for most of its game against Everton, but got the result when it mattered.

Everton led until the 68th minute thanks to Richarlison’s goal, before Jamie Vardy — part of Leicester’s 2016 title-winning team — leveled for the hosts with help from Iheanacho.

Iheanacho scored deep into added time off a pass by Ricardo Pereira. Offside was given, but the video assistant referee system allowed the goal.

"I've been waiting for this opportunity and I knew one day it was going to come so I've been working hard in training every day to make sure I keep up to this standard,” Iheanacho said. "So I'm happy today - getting a goal and assisting Jamie."

Winless Arsenal

Instead of a morale-boosting win over a team second from last in the Premier League, Arsenal had to come from behind twice just to draw.

Norwich snatched the lead in the 21st minute with Teemu Pukki’s deflected shot.

Arsenal seemed to have wasted a chance to level when Aubameyang’s penalty — awarded for handball by Norwich’s Christoph Zimmermann — was saved by Tim Krul. But VAR caught Max Aarons encroaching on the penalty area as the kick was taken, and Aubameyang scored at the second attempt.

Arsenal went into the interval 2-1 down when Todd Cantwell scored in first-half stoppage time off a pass from Onel Hernandez. Cantwell has made a habit of scoring against bigger clubs, with three of his four Premier League goals this season coming against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Aubameyang leveled the game for a second time when he scored on a rebound in the 57th. Norwich nearly took the lead again soon after but Cantwell hit the post.

United underwhelms

Even by the standards of recent Manchester United seasons, this one is looking disappointing.

United failed to find a cutting edge in its draw with Aston Villa, whose defender Tyrone Mings played a vital role with a goal.

Villa also displayed a style United lacked, typified by Jack Grealish’s excellent top-corner finish for the opening goal and Mings’ volley to make it 2-2.

United’s first goal was a header from Marcus Rashford that went in off the post and goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who was unfortunate to be credited with the own goal.

United is ninth and has won just two of its last nine games in the Premier League.

“We have had the lead in so many games and we haven't been able to win those games. Six or seven times we've been 1-0 up, or 2-1 or 3-2 like last week,” was United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s verdict.

"We should be better at seeing those games into wins."

Wolves draw

Lys Mousset continued his run of good form with his fourth goal in six Premier League games but it wasn’t enough to give Sheffield United the win in a 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

French forward Mousset needed just two minutes to score from a cross by George Baldock, but Wolves leveled through Matt Doherty in the 64th.

Wolves are unbeaten in six games in all competitions and nine in the Premier League, while Sheffield United hasn’t lost in seven games in all competitions and remains unbeaten on the road. Both teams have impressed this season with sixth-place Wolves immediately above Sheffield United.

In Commando 3, there is a strong reason behind every action sequence that takes place. You will see a new side of Vidyut. I wanted the character of Karan Singh Dogra to be little soft. I want the audience to be engaged in a story, enjoy the thrill, action and in the end, take a thought back home.”
