Champions League: Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino urges players to stay together after humiliating loss to Bayern Munich

London: Mauricio Pochettino urged Tottenham to "stay together" after his troubled side suffered a humiliating 7-2 defeat against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Tottenham conceded seven goals at home for the first time in their history as Bayern ran riot in north London.

The astonishing thrashing came just a week after Pochettino claimed his players had "different agendas" amid fears transfer speculation has destabilised last season's Champions League runners-up.

But this time Pochettino refused to let rip at his players in public as he insisted they must not let the embarrassment break them.

"In football it can happen. Every single touch went in. We are very disappointed and very upset but we have to stay together. I think we are strong in our mentality," Pochettino told BT Sport.

"This type of situation you have to face. It is tough and you need to be strong and keep going. Stay together, help each other and be all together.

"When you receive this type of result it is important to bounce back and believe in yourself. It is the only way to recover."

It was the latest chastening result for Tottenham in a dismal start to a season that has already included a shock League Cup exit at minnows Colchester and a home defeat against Premier League strugglers Newcastle.

Tottenham have leaked seven goals for the first time since 1996, when they suffered a 7-1 defeat at Newcastle.

They have won only three times in 10 games in all competitions this term and Pochettino admitted his players can't afford to live off past glories.

"Maybe you are bored about my speech but football is today not yesterday. It is always is about the show. You have to do it today and tomorrow. It is not about experiences and what happened three months ago," he said.

"We are disappointed. Every single touch from Bayern was clinical. They scored with every touch. It is tough to accept. You have to move on."

Four of Bayern's goals were scored by Serge Gnabry, who used to play for Tottenham's north London rivals Arsenal, while Robert Lewandowski netted twice.

Bayern's ruthless finishing exposed Tottenham's soft centre as they surrendered without a fight in the visitors' five-goal second half.

"I don't need too much time to explain. We played 30 minutes well, started well, pressing high. But we were unlucky that we conceded in the last minute of the first half," Pochettino added.

"They were very clinical. After we scored the penalty for our second goal, we had chances to score the third. But from the 83rd and 88th minute we conceded three more goals."

FIFA hands life ban to former CONCACAF secretary general Enrique Sanz for involvement in bribery scandal

Lausanne: Former secretary general of CONCACAF Enrique Sanz has been banned for life by FIFA after being found guilty of bribery, world football's governing body announced on Tuesday.

In a statement, FIFA said that 45-year-old Sanz had been handed the ban for "the negotiation of bribe payments in the scope of various bribery schemes concerning competitions organised by FIFA, CONCACAF, the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL)".

He has also been fined 100,000 Swiss francs (91,800 euros).

Sanz was secretary general of CONCACAF, which runs the sport in North and Central America and the Caribbean, between 2012 and 2015, when he was dismissed amid allegations of wide-raging corruption in the top echelons of football.

Before he joined CONCACAF, Sanz had worked with Traffic Sports USA, the sports marketing company heavily implicated in the scandal, which involves the bribery of senior football officials to secure commercial rights to top tournaments.

In March, the Traffic agency was ordered to pay a $1 million dollar fine.

The Belgian sat out Tuesday's 2-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League due to a groin injury.

"It's not serious but today (he) could not play. We will see on Sunday," said Guardiola.

"Maybe he can get it, but I think after the international break (he) will be fit."

De Bruyne has been in sensational form for the English champions, scoring twice and providing nine assists in just nine appearances this season.

"The extent of his layoff depends on how well he responds to the rehabilitation programme overseen by the club's medical staff," City said in a statement earlier on Tuesday.

After Wolves' visit to the Etihad on Sunday, City have a two-week layoff for an international break before travelling to Crystal Palace on 19 October.

India vs South Africa, LIVE Cricket Score, 1st Test at Visakhapatnam: Rohit Sharma in focus as hosts aim to start afresh

07:25 (IST)

Hello and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Day one of the first Test between top-ranked India and South Africa, beginning Visakhapatnam. This will be the Proteas' inaugural Test series which is part of the newly-introduced ICC World Test Championship, whereas Virat Kohli and Co opened their campaign with a 2-0 series win over West Indies in August.

India vs South Africa, LIVE Cricket Score, Test Match, Day 1 at Visakhapatnam Latest Updates: Hello and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Day one of the first Test between top-ranked India and South Africa, beginning Visakhapatnam. This will be the Proteas' inaugural Test series which is part of the newly-introduced ICC World Test Championship, whereas Virat Kohli and Co opened their campaign with a 2-0 series win over West Indies in August.

Preview: One-day big hitter Rohit Sharma will stake a claim to become India's first-choice opening Test batsman when they start a series against South Africa on Wednesday looking for a record-breaking win.

Victory in the three-match series would see India break the record of 10 straight home series wins they currently hold with Australia.

Much focus in the first Test in Visakhapatnam will be on the 32-year-old Sharma – a star of India's limited-overs teams as well as skipper of the Mumbai Indians who won this year's Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament.

Sharma has not been a Test regular, however. The last of his 27 Test caps since 2013 was in Australia last year.

He now has a new chance, replacing the out-of-form KL Rahul, as the opening positions remain a problem for India.

"He has worked so hard and if he gets an opportunity, I am sure he will do well," vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane said of Sharma.

"We all know the quality he has. He is simply special."

The new Sharma experiment has had a disastrous start, however -- he was dismissed for a duck on the second ball he faced in a practice game against the South Africans.

Natural runs

India batting great VVS Laxman said Sharma needs to stick to his natural flair while opening in the longer format.

"If you tweak your natural game too much, then you will not get the results as your mind gets cluttered and you tend to lose your rhythm," said Laxman, a middle-order batsman who was forced to open for India.

"I can admit that my flow was affected when I opened. Rohit is a rhythm-based player and if his touch gets affected, then it will be difficult."

Making of Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy: How the Chiranjeevi, Tamannaah-starrer became a pan-Indian film

Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, produced by Ram Charan, is one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year. It boasts of a massive star cast, lavish sets, grandeur, and a story which has never been told on the screen before. Ahead of the release, the crew reveals how they brought alive the story of Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy.

syee raa 1

Megastar Chiranjeevi has an enviable resume, spanning 150 films over a period of the past four decades, to his credit. However, he has never done a full-fledged period drama in his career, until Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy came to him. One of his longtime dreams was to play the role of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Despite evincing his interest to portray this character for several times, the actor admits no one came forward with a story. And then, sometime in the mid-2000s, something happened, which kept the fire burning. Acclaimed writer Paruchuri Venkateswara Rao told him the history of Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, a Polygar who lived in the Kurnool region in the first half of the 19th century, and how he fought against the East India company. But even after he fell in love with the story, the film almost did not happen owing to its high cost of production.

It took more than a decade before the idea of making a film on Reddy took proper shape, and part of the reason was SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Beginning, and its phenomenal run at the box-office. The only problem was Chiranjeevi had taken a long hiatus from films to focus on his political career. By his own admission, he had his own share of doubts if people will still be eager to see him on screen once again. “The day I saw how people responded to my comeback film, Khaidi No 150, is when I got the confidence that my image was intact,” Chiranjeevi said.  The time was right to tell the story of Reddy. Ram Charan got Surender Reddy (the two had previously worked on Dhruva) to direct the film. All of them wanted to make a big film, but it took them almost six months to finalise how grand they wanted the film to be. That was, however, only the beginning of a challenging journey ahead.

sye raa 2

In March 2017, when Surender and Ram got Rajeevan on board as the production designer, the latter, to his surprise, was told that they intend to start the film’s shoot in mid-2017. “A film of this scale requires a lot of preparation because right from the costumes to weapons, everything has to be created specifically for the film. It took us almost a month to design the look of Narasimha Reddy, and thereafter, we began focusing on designing the sets, weapons, among other things,” Rajeevan recalls, adding, “Surender Reddy wanted to make a big film. At times, the visual I had in mind wasn’t big enough for him. It was my job to deliver what he expected from me, while retaining all the elements from a design perspective.”

In July 2017, when he met Chiranjeevi to apprise him about the work that has been done till then, he recalls the actor being quite restless. “Time is such an important factor for Chiranjeevi sir, and he was eager to start shooting soon. I requested him to pay a visit to my office to see what we have been up to. To give him a complete picture, I turned the whole office into a museum, and displayed every single concept art, design that we had been working on. That’s when everyone understood the quantum of work that this film required. We built two huge sheds to just store costumes and other props. I had four art directors, six art assistants, and about 60 other people helping the art department for about 250 days over a span of two years to do the job properly. Everyone worked really hard,” Rajeevan says.

sye raa 3

Elaborating further on the quantum of work he had to do for the film, Rajeevan adds, “To create the world of Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, we had to build palaces and forts, both exterior and interior portions, for not just the lead character but also the other characters in the film, including Gosayi Venkanna’s ashram, Avuku Raju’s palace, Veera Reddy’s house among several other sets. At times, we would shoot in these sets for just three to four days, but it was essential to do all this instead of relying too much on CGI every single time.”

The extensive pre-production, especially in terms of production design, and post-visualisation came in quite handy for Kamalakannan, the VFX supervisor of the film. “Each set was so meticulously designed that it made my job easier. The total number of VFX shots came to 3,400 by the end of the film, which is a lot more than what I handled for Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. Nearly 28 VFX studios worked on the film from all over the world. The biggest challenge, for me, was to meet deadlines and deliver a quality output,” Kamalakannan says.

sye raa 4

Majority of the film was shot in Kokapet (where Chiranjeevi has a farmhouse) and Dandumailaram, a village near Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, apart from Georgia, Gandikota, Hogenakkal, and Mysore. “We were working for a huge cast and crew, and shooting most of the film on a set made sense from a logistics point of view. Moreover, the only monuments which have survived from that era are now either museums or government buildings, and to redo those places to suit the film is a cumbersome process. The whole film was a challenging process because both art and costume departments are worker-driven, and it’s essential that all of us were on our toes every single day to ensure that there are no major delays because of us,” Rajeevan explains, adding, “It was a process of self-discovery for all of us. Chiranjeevi sir lived the character each day, and Surender Reddy’s vision kept getting bigger and bigger. Striking a balance between grandeur and realism was the biggest challenge for all of us.”

Chiranjeevi's character goes through a major transformation. So does the costumes that he wears over the course of the film. Sushmita Konidela, one of the costume designers of the film, says, “We had to use our own imagination because we didn’t have specific documentation or as many pictorial references. As a result, we took the general overview of Indian textile history at that time to create the look of Narasimha Reddy, and then mixed it with our own cultural history, in terms of panchekattu, kanduva, turban, bottu, which is all very South-centric. One of the references of Narasimha Reddy that we came across had him wearing a long sherwani and a panche (dhoti). However, I’ve worked with my father (Chiranjeevi) long enough to know that he wouldn’t like any fabric that’s stiff or thick. So, we found a fluid version of kurta and panchekattu, and also added a few other elements to give a pan-Indian appeal to the costumes.”

sye raa 5

The team had already decided they were going to use earthy colours for all the costumes. So Sushmita avoided strong primary colours while designing the costumes for Chiranjeevi. For Amitabh Bachchan, she chose fabrics made out of Bhagalpuri khadi silk, which would suit his character as Narasimha’s mentor. For Nayanthara and Tamannaah, Sushmita chose saris which were almost 12 metres long. “Each costume has a story of its own, and says a lot about the transformation which the characters are undergoing. I’ve learnt so much about fabrics, dyes, and how each fabric or dye behaves under specific conditions. I’m a huge fan of cinema, and being part of a film like this was a magical experience,” she adds.

Meanwhile, the styling for the other key actors and supporting cast was handled by Uthara Menon, who had previously worked with Rajeevan on quite a few Tamil and Telugu films. She was part of the team which designed the look for Chiranjeevi. Uthara says, “Creating the perfect look for Chiranjeevi was crucial because he has to look flawless, and at the same time, he has to look different from his other characters from the past.”

sye raa 6

Once Uthara came on board as the stylist, she went on to do a lot of research about creating the look for different tribes in the film. “The discussions were more about what would be their mannerisms, diet, and way of life. If their diet had more to do with plants and fruits, then their costumes too will be eco-friendly, and a similar logic was applied for other tribes,” Uthara says, adding, “Narasimha Reddy was a rich Polygar who had several villages under him. So, we graded the villages and the people living in each one of them. Right from the rich noble men to the poorest of the villagers, everyone had a unique look, and even the way they drape their dhotis changes as per the grade we gave them. I’ve learnt so much about ageing the costumes the right way. We used a lot of tea, boiling water, and gold dust to give it the costumes a distinct look.” On creating the look for key characters, like that of Sudeep, Uthara says, “There’s a shot in the film where fabric, which Sudeep wears, has to fly with the wind while he’s riding on a horse. But to drape the fabric on him was a tricky process, and initially, he asked us if he really needs to do the drape (laughs). We spent an entire day experimenting on a mannequin to figure out how to achieve that dramatic effect, and it looked pretty cool on screen.”

Ever since the posters and trailers were unveiled, the visuals have been the talk of the town. The massive scale of the film, apart from how the actors were portrayed, is testimony to cinematographer Rathanvelu’s mastery over his craft. “If I’m looking this good in the film, the credit goes to Rathanvelu,” Chiranjeevi remarked at an event prior to the release. The duo had worked together in Khaidi No 150. Rathnavelu had a great rapport with Ram as well, after working him in Rangasthalam. “As a cinematographer, one needs to be very careful about the larger-than-life image of stars like Chiranjeevi sir that too, in a film like Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, where the lead character himself is quite heroic. There were a lot of emotions in the story when I heard the script, and I wanted to give it an earthy feel because Narasimha Reddy is from the Rayalaseema region. Executing a film like this is a Himalayan task because the light and weather conditions are never under our control when you are shooting outdoors, especially when you have 2,000 people in a frame. By the time everyone gets ready for the shot, we end up losing light, but at the same time, we can’t stall the shoot. I had to keep all this in mind while shooting the film,” Rathnavelu explains. “I’m quite thrilled with what the work I’ve done to portray a battle sequence in night effect. There were shots where I used only a fire torch as a light source for Chiranjeevi sir. It’s quite a risky thing to do because we might not get enough exposure or the image could get burnt out. All this was possible because of the rapport we have with each other. The action sequence that we shot in Georgia was another unforgettable experience. Full credit to Ram Charan for supporting the whole team to make an ambitious film like this.”

sye raa 7

For the past two years, Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy kept everyone guessing if it is going to normalise the idea of making a pan-Indian film that Baahubali started. The answer is just around the corner.

Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, starring Chiranjeevi, Amitabh Bahchan, Nayanthara, Sudeep, Vijay Sethupathi, Jagapathi Babu, and Tamannaah, is slated for release in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada this Wednesday on 2 October.

Champions League: Serge Gnabry scores four as Bayern Munich thrash Tottenham; Real Madrid held to draw by Club Brugge

Paris: Serge Gnabry scored four second-half goals as Bayern Munich came from behind to hand last season's runners-up Tottenham Hotspur a stunning 7-2 home defeat in the Champions League on Tuesday after Real Madrid escaped with a 2-2 draw against Club Brugge.

Bayern Munich's Serge Gnabry (C) celebrates after scoring their third goal against Tottenham. AFP

There were routine wins for Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid, while Cristiano Ronaldo netted in a comfortable Juventus victory, but most of the drama was in north London.

The evening started well for Spurs as Son Heung-min fired across Manuel Neuer and into the far corner to give Mauricio Pochettino's team the lead against Bayern.

However, the German champions came roaring back to leave Spurs on the receiving end of the biggest ever home defeat for an English team in Europe. It was the first time they had ever conceded seven goals in a home game.

"In football it can happen. Every single touch went in. We are very disappointed and very upset but we have to stay together," a shellshocked Pochettino told BT Sport.

Two super strikes from Joshua Kimmich and Robert Lewandowski had Bayern ahead at the break and Gnabry, the former Arsenal winger, then scored two goals two minutes apart to make it four early in the second half.

Harry Kane reduced the arrears from the penalty spot, but Gnabry ran through to complete his hat-trick on 83 minutes and he smacked in the seventh goal after Lewandowski had netted his second of the evening.

In Messi's footsteps

"It's difficult to put this into words, winning 7-2. None of us would have imagined this," Gnabry told SkySport.

"To have scored four goals is also an amazing feeling. I imagine all the Arsenal fans enjoyed that one!"

The last player to score four in a game against English opposition was Lionel Messi for Barcelona against Arsenal in 2010.

The result means last season's beaten finalists already face a struggle to qualify from Group B after they drew at Olympiakos in their opening game.

The Greek club were beaten 3-1 at Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday despite Ruben Semedo giving them the lead as the second-half sending-off of Yassine Benzia for the visitors changed the game.

Milos Vulic equalised for Red Star before late headers by Nemanja Milunovic and Richmond Boakye secured victory for the Serbs, who go to Spurs next.

Meanwhile, City beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium to make it two wins from two in Group C.

Ilkay Gundogan hit the bar for Pep Guardiola's team in the first half before Riyad Mahrez squared for Raheem Sterling to tap in the 66th-minute opener.

Sterling then turned provider for Phil Foden to secure the points in stoppage time.

Casemiro rescues Real

In the same group, Israeli forward Manor Solomon netted the winner deep in injury time as Shakhtar Donetsk came from behind to beat Atalanta 2-1 in Milan.

Duvan Zapata gave the Italian side a first-half lead after Josip Ilicic had a penalty saved, but Junior Moraes equalised for the Ukrainian champions prior to the break, before Solomon's late heroics.

In Madrid, record 13-time champions Real were 2-0 down at half-time against Club Brugge, for whom Nigerian forward Emmanuel Dennis scored a first-half brace.

But Zinedine Zidane's team came storming back as Sergio Ramos headed in before Casemiro claimed a dramatic equaliser in the 85th minute, seconds after Ruud Vormer had been sent off for the visitors.

"I would like to keep the second half and forget the first," said Zidane afterwards. "The goals we conceded were laughable."

It is a first point for Real in Group A, which is led by PSG. The French club, again missing the suspended Neymar, beat Galatasaray 1-0 in Istanbul thanks to Mauro Icardi's second-half goal.

New Ronaldo landmark

Meanwhile, Gonzalo Higuain set Juventus on their way to a 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in Turin before he set up Federico Bernardeschi to double their lead and Ronaldo completed the scoring late on.

That strike means the 34-year-old Portuguese forward has now scored a Champions League goal against 33 different opponents, equalling a record set by Raul.

Maurizio Sarri's team share first place in Group D with Atletico, who ran out 2-0 winners at Lokomotiv Moscow thanks to second-half goals by Joao Felix and Thomas Partey.

World Athletics Championships 2019: Annu Rani finishes 8th in women's javelin; Avinash Sable qualifies for 3000m steeplechase final

Doha: India's Annu Rani failed to repeat her impressive qualifying round form as she finished eighth in the women's javelin throw while Avinash Sable made it to the men's 3000m steeplechase finals under dramatic circumstances on Tuesday.

Annu, who on Monday smashed her own national record with a 62.43m throw, could only produce a best of 61.12m in the final round competition on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old Annu opened with a 59.25m before coming up with efforts of 61.12m and 60.20m which put her among the top eight after three attempts and gave her three more throws.

However, she could not improve upon her second round bid of 61.12m, coming up with 60.40m, 58.49m and 57.93m, to finish at eighth out of the 12 finalists.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Kelsey Lee Barber, won the gold with a final round throw of 66.56m while the Chinese duo of Asian Games champion Liu Shiying and Asian champion Lyu Huihui took the silver and bronze with efforts of 65.88m and 65.49m respectively.

Annu will, however, held her head high as she had become the first Indian woman to reach the javelin throw final in the World Championships.

Earlier, another national record holder Avinash became the first Indian man to qualify for a track event final in the World Championships under dramatic circumstances.

He initially failed to make the cut despite bettering his own national record in an eventful first round heat but was later included among the men's 3000m steeplechase finalists after the Athletics Federation of India protested that he was obstructed by other athletes during the race.

Avinash clocked 8 minute 25.23 seconds, bettering his earlier national record of 8:28.94, to finish seventh in heat number 3 and 20th overall out of 44 athletes who completed the race. But he was involved in two incidents during the race that blocked his path and thereby slowing him down for no fault of his.

The AFI later filed an appeal, claiming that Avinash was obstructed by other athletes during the race, with the request that he be advanced to the final round.

The race referee, after examining video footage, agreed that Avinash was significantly obstructed on two occasions. India's protest was accepted and under Rule 163.2 (Obstruction), Avinash was included for the final.

"We filed an appeal and we have got a favourable decision. So, Avinash will be in the final, he has been included among the finalists," AFI Planning Commission Chairman told PTI.

The world governing body IAAF confirmed Avinash's qualification for the final by including him among the finalists in the official results.

There was no change in sable's position but he has been added as the 16th competitor for the final race to be run on Friday.

The top three in each of the three heats and the next six fastest qualify for the final race.

Both the incidents were triggered by reigning junior world champion Takele Nigate of Ethiopia. In the first, Sable had to jump over another competitor as four-five athletes at the rear fell over each other.

Midway during the race, Nigate bumped into an obstacle just in front of Sable. The Indian had to virtually climb up the obstacle as he was blocked by the Ethiopian, thereby losing crucial time.

Despite slowing down due to the two incidents, the 24-year-old Sable ran more than three seconds better than his earlier national record of 8:28.94 which he had clocked in March this year during the Federation Cup.

Sable had won a silver on the same tracks in April in the Asian Championships with a time of 8:30.19.
