Watch: MS Dhoni smashed his highest ODI score on this day in 2005

It was on this day, 17 years ago, when former India skipper MS Dhoni smashed his highest ODI score. Dhoni achieved the feat against Sri Lanka on October 31, 2005 in the third ODI of the seven-match series at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur.

Coming into bat at number three, Dhoni played a knock of 183 runs from 145 balls with the help of 15 fours and 10 sixes. His knock helped the Rahul Dravid-led side defeat Sri Lanka by six wickets.

Meanwhile, BCCI took to Twitter to share the video of Dhoni’s sensational innings. Watch it here:

In the game, India was set a target of 299 and India had gotten off to a bad start as the side lost Sachin Tendulkar in the very first over of the innings.

However, Dhoni changed the tempo of the game, and in the end, he remained unbeaten.

The former India skipper who is probably one of the greatest captains to grace the cricket field has won it all in his time: From the T20I World Cup in 2007 and the 2013 Champions Trophy to the 2011 ODI World Cup on home soil.

Dhoni, who made his international debut against Bangladesh in 2004, went on to play 538 matches across formats during his 16-year-long career. Dhoni played 350 One-Day Internationals, 90 Tests, and 98 Twenty20 Internationals for India.

His last appearance in an international game came in July 2019, when India lost to New Zealand in the semi-final of the World Cup. On August 15, 2020, Dhoni announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, bringing down the curtains on an illustrious career.

During his international career, Dhoni amassed 4,876 runs in Tests at an average of 38.09 and scored 10,773 runs in ODIs at an average of 50.57. In T20Is, the swashbuckling batsman scored 1617 runs at a strike rate of 126.13.

Australia vs Ireland, T20 World Cup: 'Unbelievable', Barry McCarthy wows Gabba with incredible fielding effort, Watch

The T20 World Cup has seen some stunning efforts on the field so far, whether taking into outstanding catches or unreal fielding efforts that have helped teams save crucial runs.

Glenn Phillips had set the tone in the very first game of the Super 12s with a ‘Superman’ catch to dismiss Marcus Stoinis. Liam Livingstone had then given Phillips competition for the ‘Catch of the Tournament’ that very day with an equally brilliant effort against Afghanistan.

T20 World Cup: Full coverage | Schedule | Results | Points Table | News | Photos

Sunday’s triple header also witnessed Shakib Al Hasan pull off a brilliant collect and throw to dismiss Zimbabwe captain Sean Williams and Kagiso Rabada pull off a superb catch near fine leg to result in Hardik Pandya’s dismissal.

And the clash between Australia and Ireland in Brisbane on Monday bore witness to an effort that followers of the modern sport have become fairly used to in recent years, but are still left awestruck by.

Barry McCarthy, the fielder in question, was peddling back towards the straight boundary after a firm strike by Stoinis down the ground off Mark Adair in the 15th over. McCarthy collected the ball with his left hand while airborne just as it was sailing over the boundary rope, and managed to throw the ball back into the playing area before he could touch the ground on the other side of the rope which would have led to the umpire signalling a six.

A post shared by ICC (@icc)

“Unbelievable fielding!,” said commentator Isa Guha in a clip of the effort that has since been shared by ICC on their T20 World Cup Instagram account, with the crowd at the Gabba also applauding the Irishman’s effort that helped save the team four runs.

McCarthy, meanwhile, appeared to have hurt his back after landing and needed some assistance from teammates before returning to the thick of the action.

Australia, meanwhile, posted a formidable first innings total of 179/5 with skipper Aaron Finch top-scoring for the tournament hosts and defending champions with a 44-ball 63. Finch found able support in Stoinis, with whom he shared a 70-run fourth-wicket stand.

Ireland, subsequently, got off to the worst possible start, losing five wickets for just 25 runs inside four overs, leaving the Aussies staring at their second win of the campaign and a major boost in their Net Run Rate.

Virat Kohli privacy breach: Perth hotel issues apology, fires employees who shot video of Kohli’s room

After star Indian batter Virat Kohli on Monday expressed shock at the “appalling” video of his Perth hotel room that surfaced on social media, Crown Perth, the hotel where the Indian men’s cricket team were staying for the T20 World Cup match against South Africa, has issued an apology and taken action against the individuals involved.

The hotel also confirmed that the viral video of Kohli’s room was taken down from the social media handles of the individuals involved.

“The safety and privacy of our guests is our number one priority, and we are incredibly disappointed this incident has occurred. We unreservedly apologise to the guest involved and will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure this remains an isolated incident,” Crown said in a statement.

“We have zero tolerance for this behaviour, and it falls well below the standards we set for our team members and contractors.

“Crown has taken immediate steps to rectify the issue. The individuals involved have been stood down and removed from the Crown account, and the original video was swiftly removed from the social media platform,” it added.

“Crown is conducting an investigation with the third-party contractor and will take any further steps necessary to ensure an incident of this nature does not happen again.

“We are also co-operating with the Indian Cricket team and the International Cricket Council to convey our apologies and will continue to work with them as we progress the investigation,” the statement added.

The development comes after Kohli said he was disappointed by the “fanaticism and absolute invasion of privacy.”

“I understand that fans get very happy and excited seeing their favourite players and get excited to meet them and I’ve always appreciated that. But this video here is appalling and it’s made me feel very paranoid about my privacy. If I cannot have privacy in my own hotel room, then where can I really expect any personal space at all??” Virat posted on his Instagram account.

A post shared by Virat Kohli (@virat.kohli)

He also shared the video that has been circulated on Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms and said that he is “not okay with this kind of fanaticism”.

The video shared purportedly takes a tour of Virat’s room with shoes, suitcases, a visual of the room’s washroom, some personal belongings.

At one point in the video that was titled ” King Kohli’s hotel room” a man who is apparently filming the video opens the wardrobe where the viewer gets to see an iron box.

T20 World Cup: Fans troll Pakistan after India's loss to South Africa pushes them to edge of elimination

Pakistan entered the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia as one of the strongest sides on paper. But their chances to qualify for the semifinals is a big question mark, especially after India’s defeat to South Africa.

The Babar Azam-led side failed to pull off a good start as they lost their opening game against India following a breathtaking battle. Their second match was a sheer disappointment as Zimbabwe stunned them, registering a close one-run victory.

Consequentially, all the Pakistani eyes were on Sunday’s match between India and South Africa as a win for India would also benefit the neighbouring country. Unfortunately, the Men in Blue could not live up to the expectations and suffered a thumping five-wicket loss. With India’s defeat, Pakistan’s future in the tournament has faded further away.

The India-Pakistan rivalry is quite infamous for some right reasons. Fans from both countries always seek a cause to compete. After India’s maiden defeat in the competition, while some fans got really disheartened, there were a lot who found another reason to cheer about and it was their arch-rival Pakistan’s almost elimination.

The internet world saw numerous hilarious posts from Indian fans who went on to troll Pakistan. However, there were some who thought Pakistan had nothing to blame India for their exit and their poor performances in the first two games were totally responsible for it.

According to former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer, “Contrary to popular belief, if Pakistan is knocked out, it won’t be because India lost to SA. It’ll be because Pakistan lost to Zimbabwe.”

An Indian fan wrote, “We lost the match but we can take positives from here as Pakistan is out of the World Cup.”

Another fan joked, “Just got to know that Pakistan has successfully qualified for Karachi airport.”

https://twitter.com/ishantraj51/status/1586747125177937921

Referring to Ravichandran Ashwin’s batting against Pakistan and his final over against South Africa, a user hilariously stated, “Ashwin single-handedly Kick Pakistan Out of World Cup.”

On Sunday, Pakistan recorded their first win in the World Cup against the Netherlands. They are fifth in Group 2 with just two points in three games.

However, there is still a thin chance for their qualification. Wins in the remaining matches won’t be enough though. The Babar Azam and Co. will also need to rely on the results of other teams. In their next fixture, Pakistan will play South Africa on 3 November at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Pakistan vs Netherlands T20 World Cup: Bowlers propel Men in Green to first win of campaign

Pakistan finally posted their first win of the T20 World Cup 2022 as they defeated the Netherlands by six wickets Group 2 clash of the Super 12 stages in Perth on Sunday. The Pak bowlers. led by Shadab Khan’s 3/22,  took charge of the win as they fired in unison to halt the Dutch innings at 91/9. Mohammad Rizwan then played a 49-run knock as the Men in Green chased down the 92-run target with 37 balls to spare.

T20 World Cup Home | Schedule | Results | Points Table | T20 World Cup News | Photos

The victory comes for Pakistan after losing back-to-back games to India and Zimbabwe in the group earlier in the week. Despite the win, the side remains fifth in the six-team group while the Netherlands still dwell at the bottom with a third consecutive loss. Only the top two from the group progress to the semi-finals.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the Netherlands lost three of their top-order batters inside the powerplay. This included a retired hurt for No. 3 Bas de Leede, who received a nasty blow below his eyes off a Haris Rauf bouncer while Shaheen Afridi (1/19) also picked his first wicket of the tournament as the Dutch were 19/2 by the beginning of the seventh over.

The continued discipline bowling kept Dutch batters in check as just 34 runs were scored in the first 10 overs. In-form Colin Ackermann, who top scored with a run-a-ball 27, seemed like the only hope that could take the batting side to a good total but Shadab Khan’s spell at the backend of the innings left the Dutch 61/4 in 13.4 overs.

Pacers Naseem Shah (1/11), Mohammad Wasim (2/15) and Haris Rauf (1/10) went through the lower-order as Dutch somehow managed to see out the 20 overs.

Chasing 92, Babar Azam had disappointed again as he was run out with a direct hit by Roelof van der Merwe. His opening partner Mohammad Rizwan, however, stopped the side from panicking as he led the chase with a 39-ball 49, laced with five boundaries. Brandon Glover (2/22) earned the consolatory wickets of Fakhar Zaman (20 runs off 16 balls) and Shan Masood (12 off 16) while Paul van Meekeren (1/19) dismissed Rizwan.

Pakistan will now face South Africa at Sydney Cricket Ground on 3 November.

Pakistan vs Netherlands T20 World Cup: Roelof van der Merwe runs out Babar Azam with stunning direct hit; watch video

Babar Azam’s poor run of form at the T20 World Cup continued into the third game as he was ran out just four by Netherland’s veteran Roelof van der Merwe during Super 12’s Group 2 encounter on Sunday.

The incident happened during the second over of the second innings while Pakistan were chasing a modest target of 92 after halting Netherlands innings at 91/9 in 20 overs.

Azam, who was struggling to score against the initial swing generated by Dutch pacers, took the risk of a non-existent single after pushing a ball slowly to mid-on where an alert Van der Merwe was quick on his feet to approach the ball. The Dutch fielder didn’t waste any time in throwing the ball to the non-striker end was spot on with his throw.

While Azam feared the worst after a direct hit, the third umpire soon confirmed watching the replays that Azam was well short of the crease while the ball made an impact with the wickets.

With the four-run innings, Azam’s aggregate score is just 8 runs in three innings at the T20 World Cup with an average of 2.67.

Despite the early wicket, Pakistan remained comfortable in the chase with Azam’s partner Mohammad Rizwan got some runs under his name. At the time of writing, 39 not out of 28 deliveries while the side were 70/2.

After beating Australia in the warm-ups, Team India began their Super 12s campaign with a nerve-wracking four-wicket win over Pakistan in Melbourne, before dishing out a more clinical performance against Netherlands in Sydney.

Against South Africa, however, they face their toughest challenge of the tournament so far, given the way the Proteas have been firing on all cylinders so far in the tournament.

The Temba Bavuma-led side, who were eliminated from the semi-final race last year despite winning four out of five matches, were denied a deserved win against Zimbabwe thanks to incessant rain that forced them to split points with their neighbours. They however, would collect their first win in style with a 104-run thrashing of Bangladesh.

Squads:

India: Rohit Sharma(c), KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik(w), Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Rishabh Pant, Deepak Hooda, Harshal Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal.

South Africa: Quinton de Kock(w), Temba Bavuma(c), Rilee Rossouw, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Wayne Parnell, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi, Lungi Ngidi, Heinrich Klaasen, Marco Jansen, Reeza Hendricks.

T20 World Cup: The final delivery no-ball drama from Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe that left everyone baffled

Another game, another no-ball drama.

Except unlike the India-Pakistan encounter at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, it wasn’t a contentious waist-high delivery that was at the centre of another comedy of errors involving the laws of the game.

T20 World Cup: Full coverage | Schedule | Results | Points Table | News | Photos

Instead, it was the wicketkeeper who was at the heart of the incident that transpired after the last delivery of the Bangladesh-Zimbabwe match in Brisbane was bowled and both teams had left the ground.

The final over of Zimbabwe’s chase of the 151-run target was quite the topsy-turvy affair. Needing 16 to win off the last six deliveries with a set Ryan Burl at the crease, the Chevrons got off to a poor start in the final over with new batter Brad Evans holing out to the man at deep midwicket in the second delivery.

A post shared by ICC (@icc)

Off-spinner Mosaddek Hossain was wayward in the next two balls — conceding four leg byes off the third before getting smashed for a six by Richard Ngrava off the fourth. Mosaddek did well to put the ball out of Ngrava’s reach and get him stumped off the fifth, and followed a similar plan for Blessing Muzarabani in the last ball, which ended as a dot as the tail-ender swung his bat in vain.

The players had already made their way back towards the pavilion and were shaking hands in post-match formalities when the third umpire decided to have a second look at the final delivery. And the discovery of wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan collecting the ball in front of the stumps led to the giant screen at the Gabba flashing the words ‘No Ball’.

The Bangladeshi players looked both baffled and stunned when the on-field umpires signalled for them to head back to the centre. Muzarabani, who had faced the last delivery in vain, had another shot at sealing another memorable win for the Chevrons, three days after their thrilling one-run win in the ‘Bean Derby’. The equation had then come down to four off the last ball.

Mosaddek however, held his nerve just when the game appeared to be slipping out of his team’s grasp, and unfortunately for Craig Ervine and Co, there was to be no Lagaan-like twist this time around as Muzarabani missed yet again, leading to frustrated celebrations from the keeper behind him and a collective sigh of relief from the rest of the Bangladeshi players on the field as they confirmed a three-run win and jumped to the second spot in Group 2.

There were plenty of interesting reactions to the incident on Cricket Twitter, some of which are listed below:

Bangladesh had earlier posted a competitive 150/7 on the board on the back of opener Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 55-ball 71 after the Tigers won the toss and skipper Shakib Al Hasan elected to bat. Shanto’s knock helped the Bangladeshis recover from a shaky start after Soumya Sarkar was dismissed for a two-ball duck and sizeable partnerships with Shakib (23) and Afif Hossain (29) put them on course for a total in excess of 160, which they could have achieved had it not been for a last-over collapse.

Zimbabwe, in reply, suffered a top-order collapse and looked down and out at 69/5. Skipper Sean Williams, however, refused to give up and brought his side back on their feet in the chase with a 63-run sixth-wicket stand, bringing up his 10th T20I half-century along the way. Williams however, failed to see his side through till the end, getting run out on 64 in the penultimate over thanks to a brilliant piece of fielding by his Bangladeshi counterpart.

Watch: Shakib Al Hasan’s brilliant run-out helps Bangladesh beat Zimbabwe in T20 World Cup

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan pulled off a brilliant run out to turn the game around against Zimbabwe in the Super12s of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2022 at The Gabba on Sunday.

Shakib, who was bowling the crucial 19th over of the match, showed his athleticism to run out half-centurion Sean Williams, who was taking the game away from Bangladesh with his big hits during the death overs.

It was full-length delivery outside off by Shakib and Williams drove it to the right of the Bangladesh all-rounder and tried to steal a single. However, Shakib got across to his right, dived, and turned around to throw down the stumps at his end. Notably, Williams was well short of the crease.

The run-out was excellent from Shakib as he had only one stump to aim at.

Here’s the video of the run-out:

It is worth noting that Williams’ dismissal changed the whole momentum of the game as Bangladesh defeated Zimbabwe by three runs in a thrilling clash.

Earlier, Bangladesh rode on opener Najmul Hossain Shanto’s maiden fifty in the format to score 150 for seven after opting to bat. Shanto made 71 off 55 balls to hold the innings together.

Afif Hossain (29) and skipper Shakib Al Hasan (23) also scored some runs.

Blessing Muzarabani (2/13) and Richard Ngarava (2/24) picked up two wickets apiece for Zimbabwe.

Sean Williams made 64 as Zimbabwe came close but failed to cross the finish line.

Taskin Ahmed (3/19) and Mosaddek Hossain (3/37) scalped three wickets each for Bangladesh.

BCCI's 'pay equity policy' a laudable decision, but better and more contracts is the real deal

Soon after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced its ‘pay equity’ policy guaranteeing equal match fees for contracted India women cricketers same as their male counterparts, the BCCI Women Twitter handle uploaded a 20-second video clip of captain Harmanpreet Kaur hailing the “landmark” move.

The cricket board, which has stopped holding press conferences after national team selections or sending press releases explaining the decision to call up or snub a player, was quick to also send a press release on their new decision with quotes from the president, secretary and all of the top brass telling us how we are entering a “new era” in Indian cricket.

The BCCI is well aware of the changing times and the rarity of its decision and hence decided to collect some positive PR. As they would have wanted, the pay equity policy was lapped up by the national media and the cricket board had its headlines and prominent spaces on the news pages. It matters little how the players or former cricketers have responded. Their enthusiasm is justified. After all, they have been the victim of discrimination.

It’s important how we treat this new policy. Is it a step in the right direction to eradicate the gender divide in Indian cricket? Of course, a big one in that context. But context is also important to accurately asses how ‘historic’ the move is.

Essentially, more than a historic move, it’s a better late than never decision.

BCCI trails smaller boards in working for women cricketers

In fact smaller and obviously less rich boards have taken a big lead over BCCI when it comes to women’s cricket. Earlier this year, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) combined the men’s and women’s professional environments in one agreement. The women’s national team players and domestic women’s players in New Zealand are receiving the same match fee as men from 1 August.

A day after BCCI’s big announcement, it was informed that 80 women’s domestic contracts will be handed over in England from February next year. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is set to have close to 100 professional cricketers. A domestic contract is not a reality in Indian cricket.

No doubt, the BCCI’s historic move pales in comparison to what is going around in the world of cricket.

Even within the Indian central contract system, the gender disparity is still stark and reprehensible.

Central contracts are offered each year to a group of top players (both male and female) who have been picked to play for the national sides. The contracts are divided into different grades with different remuneration structures. Which player will belong to which grade is determined by their performances and utility to the team.

Central contracts guarantee payment of a certain amount even if a player misses matches due to injury or other reasons. While a match fee is only paid to players for participating in a game.

Coming to the stinking disparity. Skipper Harmanpreet who features in the top grade of central contracts for women cricketers earns less than what the men cricketers in the fourth grade make.

Central contracts for the Indian women’s cricket team for 2021-22:

Grade A: INR 50 lakh

Grade B: INR 30 lakh

Grade C: INR 10 lakh

Central contracts for the Indian men’s cricket team for 2021-22:

Grade A+: INR 7 crore

Grades A: INR 5 crore

Grade B: INR 3 crore

Grade C: INR 1 crore

Also, the increase in match fees is only significant if the matches for women’s team increases at the same pace. The women’s team plays a lot fewer matches than the Men in Blue and till the time this inconsistency in scheduling remains, the pay equity policy would mean little.

Real significance

With few matches and intense competition within the team, the number of real beneficiaries of the match fees hike would be limited in any case.

To make a bigger impact, bolder decisions are required. The stark disparity in the central contracts is what the BCCI must address soon. The world’s richest board should also look to extend the safety net to domestic cricketers.

While increasing match fees has its benefits, the main issue is financial security. If the board is really serious about making women’s cricket a viable career option, then they need to guarantee adequate money to the players. Else the players will continue to juggle playing with jobs, which in any case is getting fewer for professional cricketers.

The real significance of the pay equity policy is that BCCI has accepted that women cricketers deserve equal money for putting in equal effort. If BCCI can buck the market economics in its decision regarding match fees, there’s no reason why economics must decide the contract offerings.

Pakistan vs Netherlands T20 World Cup: Date, toss time, TV channel, live streaming for PAK vs NED

Pakistan will be hoping to avoid a third straight defeat in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia when they face Netherlands in a Super 12 contest, in Perth on Sunday.

Both Pakistan and Netherlands are winless after two matches in Group 2, and the match on Sunday will give both the teams an opportunity to get their campaign rolling.

Two last-ball defeats in consecutive games haven’t helped Pakistan’s case, and their road only gets tougher from here on. Babar Azam and Co will have to win all their three remaining games ( vs Netherlands, South Africa and Bangladesh), and hope other results go their way.

Pakistan’s reputed opening duo of skipper Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan have failed to fire for the Men in Green, and pressure will certainly be on the duo to give it their best against the Dutch.

How the duo of Babar and Rizwan turn up in the powerplay overs will probably define how the rest of the Pakistan batting lineup showcases.

Come the Netherlands game, Pakistan will have to be wary of pacer Paul van Meekeren. The 29-year-old Dutch has taken six wickets from four matches (including Round 1 matches) this edition, and has been effective in powerplay.

In the 42 balls he has bowled in the powerplay phase, van Meekeren has conceded just 30 runs.

While Pakistan cannot afford any further slip-up this tournament, Netherlands will be hoping to cause a massive upset on the Men in Green, and it will be interesting as to how Netherlands will approach this game.

WBBL 2022: Jemimah Rodrigues sings 'Channa Mereya' with her Melbourne Stars teammates; Watch

India’s star cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues has swiftly blended into the Melbourne Stars after leaving the Renegades, their cross-town rivals. She had been a prominent face while playing for Renegades previously.

This year, the right-handed batter joined Stars and made her WBBL 2022 debut for the side on 20 October against Perth Scorchers. However, during this short time, Rodrigues, with her jovial personality, has made herself at home with her new teammates.

Recently, ahead of the Melbourne derby, the India player picked up her guitar and went on to entertain others during a bus trip along the Western Highway to Ballarat on Thursday. Now, Rodrigues has shared a couple of clips of the musical journey on her Instagram handle.

In the viral videos, the cricketers along with Rodrigues can be seen vibing on a popular Bollywood song, ‘Channa Mereya’ from the Ranbir Kapoor-starred film, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. The other cricketers also found the tune quite catchy as they went on to sing along with Rodrigues. Some of them were also spotted recreating the session by recreating the hook step of the song.

The caption of the post read, “Went a little Desi with the Stars. How good are they at Bollywood songs?”

The fun moments grabbed eyeballs of Rodrigues’ followers and other cricket fans. The comment section saw numerous appreciative remarks for the foreign cricketers’ efforts to sing a Hindi song. Rodrigues’ Indian teammate Smriti Mandhana also marked her presence there and wrote, “This song.” Among others, Indian bowler Renuka Singh Thakur and young batter Harleen Deol showed their love too. Golfer Vani Kapoor marked it as “precious Memories for life.”

Today, the Stars thrashed the Renegades in the derby game by 6 wickets. Batting first, the Renegades managed to post a mere total of 91 runs thanks to the impressive bowling display by Stars’ Sophie Day who got 4 wickets to her name. As it was an easy assignment, the Nicole Faltum-led side completed the chase losing only four of their batters. However, Rodrigues failed to contribute anything significant. She returned to the pavilion after scoring just 8 off 8 deliveries including a boundary to her name.

New Zealand vs Sri Lanka T20 World Cup Live Scores and Updates

Hello and Welcome to the live coverage of New Zealand vs Sri Lanka which is the only match to be played on Saturday after multiple washouts in Melbourne on Friday. The contest will prove to be a crucial one as the winner of this match will make a strong case for themselves to qualify for the semi-finals. New Zealand definitely start as the favourites, but Sri Lanka have been dynamic in the current year, and not to forget, are the Asian champions as well!

Toss and playing XI in a while.

Amidst an already heated group 1, New Zealand will face Sri Lanka in a very important fixture to add some crucial points to their tally and strengthen their hold on the semi-finals qualification.

New Zealand and Sri Lanka will face each other at the SCG in Sydney.

New Zealand were not given any significant attention at the start of the tournament, but their emphatic win over Australia ensured their proper announcement at the World Cup.

The Kiwis are looking for a team that has covered all bases with some power hitters across the batting order and a versatile bowling attack. The squad will only be boosted with the comeback of Daryl Mitchell who is expected to make his way into the playing XI against Sri Lanka.

New Zealand will continue to bank on Devon Conway and Finn Allen to open the innings, keeping someone as mighty as Martin Guptill out of the playing XI.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will look to overcome their defeat against Australia and compete better with New Zealand. They were going strong against Australia until Marcus Stoinis came in and spoiled the momentum that was making the match look like going down to the wire.

The Lankans were disciplined with the ball but will want their batters to put in more effort and score those additional 15 runs. Wanindu Hasaranga will also look to make things normal after being taken for a ride against Australia.

While New Zealand have recovered their injured player, Sri Lanka have been plagued with injuries and we are definitely expecting a couple of changes in the playing XI.

The Kiwis will want to ensure the two points here after one point slipped as the match against Afghanistan was washed out.

Thankfully, no showers are expected in Sydney, and after multiple washouts on Friday, Saturday is expected to set up the World Cup mood perfectly.

Head to Head: New Zealand 10 – Sri Lanka 8 (one washout)

Squads:

New Zealand: Finn Allen, Devon Conway(wk), Kane Williamson(c), Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult, Michael Bracewell, Daryl Mitchell, Adam Milne, Martin Guptill

Sri Lanka: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis(wk), Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dasun Shanaka(c), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Lahiru Kumara, Ashen Bandara, Pramod Madushan, Kasun Rajitha, Jeffrey Vandersay
