Shaun Pollock chats with South African debutant Marco Jansen before the start of play on Day 3.
Jansen: I actually found out two days before the game that I found out I was playing. I actually couldn’t sleep. There is a bit of bounce and assistance from the pitch I feel. I feel I searched too much in terms of my lines. Could’ve been more patient. It’s my debut, I want to play. Can’t help if it rains. Wouldn’t say naughty, but we did crack a lot of jokes. Lots of coffee. We’re going to have to put the ball in the right area and just have to be consistent with out lines.

Shaun Pollock and Sunil Gavaskar analyse the Supersport Park pitch ahead of Day 3:
Pollock: Only day two of the actual action taking place. It doesn’t look like anything strange. Looks like a better surface today. It’s going to misbehave as the game goes on. Beautiful sunshine and blue skies, we’re so happy to see that.
Gavaskar: There was a bit of spongy bounce, not the kind of carry that thuds into the keeper’s gloves. The lengths the South African bowlers bowled was that much easier for the Indian batters to negotiate. There would’ve been a hint of moisture underneath on Day 1, but the surface hardening up now means the carry will be a lot better. Another 150 should be good enough for the Indians.

"Yesterday there was nothing to do, but we had a really good first day. KL and Mayank produced a good opening partnership, and Virat and Ajju chipped in. Was slightly damp but it is getting better, so hopefully we get a big score. The third day we’ll start with normal batting, and then decide from there how far we’ll go. Always good to keep in places where the bounce is nice, but this is my first time here," says Rishabh Pant in a chat with former South Africa captain Shaun Pollock.

Day 2 report: Rain washed out the second day's play in the first test between South Africa and India in Centurion on Monday.
No play was possible in the morning and umpires planned to inspect the SuperSport Park pitch at 11.30 a.m. local time and called for an early lunch break. But that inspection was put back an hour and 15 minutes and then delayed again as the rain persisted and thunder rumbled over the ground.
Although the rain did ease in the afternoon, the field had taken on too much water and umpires abandoned the day's play.
If the weather is good on Day 3, India will resume on 272-3 in its first innings after opener KL Rahul's unbeaten 122 gave the touring team a solid start to the three-test series. Ajinkya Rahane was 40 not out alongside Rahul.
Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi took 3-45 on the opening day to be the only South African bowler to have any success.
Top-ranked India is seeking a long-awaited first test series win in South Africa.
