Who will be Bolt's successor?

It was a surprise on Sunday on who could be the great Usain Bolt's successor.

Italy's Lamont Marcell Jacobs outshone a field of unusual suspects to claim a shock Olympic gold in the men's 100 metres, breaking retired Jamaican star Bolt's 13-year hold on the blue-riband event.

Jacobs, 26, timed a European record of 9.80 seconds, with American Fred Kerley taking silver in 9.84sec in one of the most understated major championship 100m races of recent times.

Canada's Andre de Grasse, a bronze medallist at the 2016 Rio Games, repeated the feat in 9.89sec in Tokyo.

Day 9 wrap of India's action

PV Sindhu smashed her way into history books with a second successive Olympic medal on Sunday, while the men's hockey team raised hopes of resurrecting a glorious past by entering the semi-finals for the first time in 49 years as India surpassed its performance at the 2016 Rio Games on an epoch-making day.

Sindhu secured a bronze medal by beating World No 9 He Bing Jiao of China in the women's singles third place play-off, becoming only the second Indian and the country's first woman to win two Olympic medals. She had won a silver medal at the Rio Games.

Manpreet Singh and his men showed what resolve can do when they outplayed Great Britain 3-1 in the quarter-final, at the end of which the determined men sobbed in jubilation, hugging each other tightly for they knew the enormity of this win.

Indian equestrian Fouaad Mirza picked up 11.20 penalty points and was placed 22nd after the cross-country round.

A good round in the individual show jumping qualifier on Monday will ensure that Mirza, India's only equestrian at the Olympics in over two decades, and his horse Seigneur Medicott, remain in the top 25 and make the eventing individual jumping final in the evening.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the 10th day of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Action packed day ahead of us with Indian women’s hockey team taking on Australia in the quarter-finals, discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur competing in the women's finals, and more.

Preview Day 10: Sunday was a largely productive day for the Indian contingent at Tokyo Olympics, with PV Sindhu claiming her second successive Olympic medal and the India men’s hockey team storming into the semi-finals for the first time in 49 years.

While Sindhu claimed the bronze with a straight-games (21-13, 21-15) win over China’s He Bing Jiao, the men’s hockey team outplayed Great Britain 3-1 in their quarter-final.

India’s medal count now stands at three, with weightlifter Mirabai Chanu winning the silver and boxer Lovlina Borgohain assured of a medal.

Satish Kumar, the first super heavyweight (+91kg) to qualify for the Olympics, entered the ring with 13 stitches on his face against reigning world champion Bakhodir Jalolov and lost 0-5 in a unanimous decision.

The two Indian golfers in the fray – Anirban Lahiri and Udayan Mane – failed to put on a noteworthy performance. Equestrian Fouaad Mirza was placed 22nd after the cross-country round.

There’s plenty of intriguing action lined up for Day 10, with the Indian women’s hockey team aiming to create history as they take on Australia in the quarter-finals, and discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur competing in the women's finals.

Watch out for Dutee Chand, who will be competing in the women’s 200m Heat 4.

Also in action will be shooters Sanjeev Rajput and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, who will compete in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions.
