IPL 2023: Fans exchange blows during DC vs SRH match at Arun Jaitley Stadium; watch video

Fans descending into brawls is something one would have imagined at a football match with football hooliganism being a reality in Europe. But a viral video shows that heat from the pitch has now started to travel to stands in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well.

A video purported to have taken place during the Delhi Capitals (DC) vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) match on Saturday showing spectators exchanging blows is doing rounds on Twitter.

Watch:

Meanwhile, on the ground, Delhi continued their unfortunate run this season with yet another defeat as Hyderabad won the match by 9 runs.

SRH, while batting first, posted a total of 197 at a loss of six wickets. DC’s chase summed with a thin margin at 188.

David Warner-led DC are at the bottom of the points table with just 4 points with only two wins in eight matches, one of which was against SRH on Monday earlier this week.

DC’s Mitchell Marsh dished an impressive all-round performance with 63 runs with the bat and four wickets with the ball.

However, this was not enough to win the day for DC.

“We can’t blame anyone. We lost a couple of close games. Ultimately, if we win those, we are not talking about that sort of stuff. It’s extremely hard to win games in the IPL. Unfortunately, we have been on the wrong side of a couple of really close ones. But I still think there are a few positives to come out tonight. But chasing 195, was far too many on that wicket,” Marsh said at the post-match conference.

Earlier skipper Warner also pointed towards the problem.

“To be honest, we don’t have too many discussions as you have to back your skills and I can’t tell people how to bat. You have to actually work it out,” he said after DC’s match with the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Wrestlers' protest: Sakshi Malik's wedding picture with Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh sparks controversy

Social Media is abuzz with all kinds of theories and rumours about the ongoing wrestlers’ protest against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Singh.

In a similar vein, a picture from protesting female wrestler Sakshi Malik’s wedding featuring Singh is going viral with her detractors questioning why did she invite him?

Sakshi has responded by retweeting singer Chinmayi Sripaada’s tweet on the debate. According to Sripaada, a woman has no choice if her ‘molester is in a position of power’.

“YES SHE WILL!!! WHEN HER MOLESTER IS IN A POSITION OF POWER SHE HAS NO BLOODY CHOICE. Women have had to suffer molesters in their own family and have to suffer their presence and pretend as if everything is OK. I really hope all these molester/rapist supporters can vanish off the face of the earth!” Chinmayi Sripaada tweeted.

The current wrestlers’ protest started on 23 April when the wrestlers alleged that Delhi Police didn’t file an FIR against WFI president, who is also a BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda, after seven female wrestlers, including a minor, filed a sexual harassment complaint against him at the CP Police Station in Delhi.

The protestors had also demanded the Sports Ministry make the inquiry report into sexual allegations against Singh public, along with an FIR against him.

After the players reached Supreme Court on 24 April to have an FIR registered against Singh, the apex court asked the Delhi Police to respond. The Delhi police on 28 April told the court they will register an FIR against Singh. But the wrestlers said that they will continue agitating till Singh’s sent to jail.

The protest started earlier this year on 18 January when the wrestlers led by by Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Bajrang Punia, two-time world championships medallist Vinesh Phogat and Rio Olympics bronze medallist Sakshi Malik made the allegations for the first time.

After a session of deliberations with the Sports Minister, who assured that a panel would enquire into the case, the protest was called off on 21 January.

However, the enquiry report was not made public by the ministry and no action was taken against Singh. This prompted the wrestlers to once again take to protests.

Meanwhile, Singh has claimed innocence and said that he’s being made a victim of politics.

“This battle has gone beyond the athletes now as political parties have become part of it. From day one of the protest, I felt that this protest was politically motivated and not the voice of the athletes. They have been influenced by politicians,” Brij Bhushan Singh said.

“90% of the athletes & guardians of Haryana trust the Wrestling Federation of India. A few families & the girls who have levelled allegations belonged to the same ‘akhada’…The patron of that ‘akhada’ is Deepender Hooda.”

Rohit Sharma turns 36: Recalling Hitman's records on his birthday

Ever since he debuted for the Indian team in 2007, Rohit Sharma has gradually grown to be the pillar of the batting order. His power hitting, which has earned him the name ‘Hitman’ from his fans, has never failed to entertain and mesmerise the audience. Today (30 April) as the Indian captain across format turns 36, let’s take a look at the milestones along his journey hitherto.

Rohit started impressing people right off the mark in the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007. Starting off with a half-century against South Africa, he played a timely 30 off 16 balls to contribute to India’s win over arch-rivals Pakistan in the final. With 88 runs in three innings, he remained not out throughout the tournament.

He hasn’t looked back since then.

Rohit turns 36: Yuvraj, Harbhajan and others wish India captain

Although he started in the middle order, he made good of the opportunity to open when he got the chance to do so in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. At an average of 35.40, he gathered 177 runs in five innings. He scored two fifties in the tournament.

This shift to the opening role gave him the opportunity to transform into what he today is known to be, a destructive batter, who once settles down on the crease gives hell to the ballers.

He has 9825 runs to his account in 243 ODIs with an impressive average of 48.63. A best of 264 — which is also the highest number of runs scored by an individual in an ODI, 30 centuries and 48 fifties highlight his record. He has managed to maintain a strike rate of 90.02 throughout.

Following Sachin Tendulkar’s 49 and Virat Kohli’s 46, he has the third-highest ODI centuries to his name.

The pinnacle of his ODI performance was the 2019 World Cup, where he emerged as the highest run-getter with 648 runs at an average of 81 in nine matches. He registered the feat of becoming the only player to have scored five centuries in a single World Cup. He also scored a fifty.

Not just the ODIs, the Hitman has an equally impressive record in the Tests too. Playing mostly as an opener, he has scored 3379 runs in over 83 innings in 49 matches. This includes nine centuries and 14 fifties, and a best of 212.

As the nickname Hitman suggests, he is an explosive batter in the T20Is. He has played 148 T20Is and scored 3853 runs at an average of 31.32 and a strike rate of 139.24. This includes four centuries and 29 half centuries. He is the second-highest run-getter in the format just behind Virat Kohli with 4008 runs. However, he has the record to have hit the most no. of sixes (182) in T20Is to name.

His leadership skills have earned him the captaincy role not just for the Indian side in all formats, but he has also led the Mumbai Indians in the IPL since 2013. And as the skipper he has taken the team to win five IPL titles – the most by any IPL team.

He also won one IPL title when he was part of the Deccan Chargers in 2009.

In the IPL he is the fourth-highest run-getter with a total of 6060 runs over 229 innings in 234 matches at an average of 30.14. This includes one century and 41 half centuries and a best of 109 not out.

MI vs RR, IPL 2023: Mumbai Indians seek to return to winning ways against Rajasthan Royals in IPL's landmark 1000th game

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) will hope to return tro winnibng ways, when they host Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Match 42 of the Indian Premier League (IPL), at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

For most of the tournament, MI have been languishing at the bottom half of the IPL standings. They are currently ninth with six points, whereas the Royals are second with 10 points from eight games, two points behind league leaders and defending champions Gujarat Titans.

Jofra Archer, who lost played for MI against PBKS on 22 April, is likely to make a return to the playing XI, while Trent Boult, who missed RR’s last match due to a niggle also looks set to make a comeback.

MI desperately needs Rohit Sharma to rediscover his form if they are to get runs at the top of the order. Rohit has scored just one fifty all season, while aggregating 181 runs from seven matches, at a strike-rate of 135.07.

MI used to be an unbeatable side at once, but they have struggled this season. The absence of injured Jasprit Bumrah is proving out to be a big miss. Bumrah’s absence has led to MI’s struggles with death bowling. Against PBKS, MI conceded 96 runs from the last five overs, to hand the Punjab Kings victory. In another match, they conceded 70 off the last four overs against GT.

MI will need to fire in unison on Sunday, and for that, they will need their top-order batters to produce the goods. The trio of Rohit, Kishan and Suryakumar will have to keep up with the team’s batting expectations. They have just a combined total of three fifties between them and Kishan and Rohit, in fact, will hope to improve on their strike-rates, which are 129.78 and 135.07 respectively.

What makes RR an impressive side this season is their depth and firepower in batting. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 77 against CSK, leads RR’s batting charts with 304 runs, whereas Jos Buttler is not far behind in second place, with 271 runs. Dhruv Jurel has also scored runs on a consistent basis.

RR’s spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal (12) and R Ashwin (11) also have a joint 23 wickets between them, and have looked formidable in their bowling so far.

The contest on Sunday night will also be historic at Wankhede Stadium, with the contest being the 100th IPL match.

Amid the ongoing protest, Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has claimed that he is trusted by 90 per cent of athletes from Haryana and that wrestlers from only one ‘akhada’ are protesting against him.

India’s top wrestlers including Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia are currently protesting against Brij Bhushan at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The WFI president has been accused of sexual harassment by seven wrestlers including a minor.

WFI chief also mentioned that the girls who are protesting against him belong to the one ‘akhada’ led by Congress leader Deepender Hooda.

“90 per cent of the athletes and their guardians from Haryana trust the Wrestling Federation of India. A few families and the girls who have levelled allegations belonged to the same ‘akhada’…The patron of that ‘akhada’ is Deepender Hooda,” the WFI chief said.

“…You don’t get justice from Jantar Mantar. If you want justice, you have to go to the Police, Court. They never did that until now. We will accept whatever the court decides..,” Singh added.

On Friday, the Delhi Police registered two FIRs against WFI president Singh, one under POSCO Act and another related to outraging the modesty of a woman, following allegations of exploitation of women by him.

Earlier on Sunday, Olympic medallist wrestler Yogeshwar Dut said now that FIR has been registered, the grapplers should focus on their practice.

“The wrestlers should have taken this step 3 months ago. FIR has been registered, now the wrestlers should focus on their practice. Even the Prime Minister does not have the right to punish only the court does” Yogeshwar Dutt, who is also a BJP leader, said.

'We are lucky to have him as a leader': Mumbai Indians celebrate Rohit Sharma's 10 years as captain

24 April 2023 was a special day for Mumbai Indians. Sachin Tendulkar celebrated his 50th birthday on the day and 24 April 2023 also marked the ten-year anniversary of Rohit Sharma captaining Mumbai Indians.

As the Mumbai Indians return to the Wankhede Stadium to take on Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, the team and coaching staff spoke about captain Rohit Sharma’s decade at the helm.

Rohit Sharma also turned 36 on Sunday (30 April).

Kieron Pollard, the team’s batting coach and one of the players in the MI setup, when Rohit took over captaincy in the middle of the season in 2013, said, “He’s grown as a leader. I mean he’s grown into leadership. Obviously, it was entrusted onto him in 2013 in the middle of a season. He was still pretty young at that point in time.”

Pollard said that in spite of being young when he first took charge, Rohit was a quick learner and always showed leadership potential. “That shows you that a person has a great acumen of what he can accomplish and we are lucky to have him as a leader. He has a wealth of experience, so it’s a matter of tapping into that and continuing to see him grow.”

Terming Rohit’s career so far as “incredible”, bowling coach Shane Bond emphasised the impact that Rohit has had as a personality. “He’s such a big personality around our group, on and off the field and particularly in leading this team to where we are now, he has done a brilliant job.”

Suryakumar Yadav, said that Rohit’s numbers as captain speak for themselves and his journey with MI has been an incredible story. “Here we are in his 10th year as captain. So obviously 10 years as captain, that too for a franchise like Mumbai Indians. I think it is a very, very big achievement. It’s a story in itself. He’s brought so much glory for the franchise, winning five trophies under his captaincy.”

Ishan Kishan highlighted Rohit’s contribution to the team as captain, “Winning 5 Championship as Captain is a great achievement. I know how he is as a captain, he’s done so much for the team.”

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green credited Rohit as a key factor in the team’s legacy, saying, “The success that Mumbai have had, a lot of that is to do with him.”

Rohit’s way of dealing with youngsters and the way he conducts himself in a team environment make him a great leader, feels fielding coach James Pamment.

“A great strength of his is that he encourages the young Indian players very well. Captains just know how to pull the strings and that’s one of the things Rohit has done extremely well from being a very young captain when he first won the championship to maturing in the job. In a big competition like this, he’s got a nice manner about him,” Pamment said.

Wrestlers should have got the FIR registered against WFI chief three months back: Yogeshwar Dutt

Olympic medallist Yogeshwar Dutt has said that protesting wrestlers should have got the FIR registered against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh three months back when they initially launched the agitation.

The Delhi Police on Friday registered two FIRs against Brij Bhushan who has been accused of sexual harassment by seven wrestlers including a minor. The FIRs were registered after the wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, returned to protest on 23 April and later moved Supreme Court seeking an FIR against the WFI chief.

The wrestlers initially launched the protest in January this year accusing the WFI president of sexual harassment. The protesting athletes demanded the resignation of BJP leader Brij Bhushan and the dissolution of WFI. The protest was called off after a meeting with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur who established an ‘oversight committee’ to investigate the allegations. Legendary boxer Mary Kom was named the head of the committee.

The wrestlers returned to protest after no action was taken against the WFI chief. And have vowed to continue to protest till Brij Bhushan is arrested.

Yogeshwar Dutt, who was also a part of the oversight committee to probe the allegations of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan, has asked the wrestlers to focus on practice.

“The wrestlers should have taken this step 3 months ago. FIR has been registered, now the wrestlers should focus on their practice. Even the Prime Minister does not have the right to punish only the court does” Yogeshwar Dutt, who is also a BJP leader, told news agency ANI.

“An FIR has been registered in this matter and as I said earlier also, the wrestlers should have taken steps to get the FIR registered 3 months back. Nothing happens while sitting at home,” Dutt added.

Talking about the work of the committee, Dutt said that the team was asked to submit the report after listening to all parties involved. He added that courts only have the power of sentencing and neither the committee nor the Prime Minister can punish someone.

Wrestlers' protest: Brij Bhushan says ‘industrialist, Congress behind protests', won't resign as WFI chief

A day after two FIRs were registered against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the WFI chief has said that he is ready for any kind of investigation but will not resign from his post as it would indicate that he has accepted the charges against him.

Brij Bhushan has been accused of sexual harassment by seven women wrestlers including a minor.

“I am completely innocent and have full faith in Supreme Court and Delhi Police. I am ready to face any kind of investigation,” Singh was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. “Resigning as president of the Wrestling Federation of India is not a big deal for me, but I will not resign as a criminal.”

“I’m not a criminal. Resigning means I have accepted their allegations.”

Wrestler’s protest: Delhi Police has cut power supply at Jantar Mantar, alleges Punia

Brij Bhushan also hit back at the protesting wrestlers over their meeting with Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday Morning at the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The WFI president said that Congress and an industrialist are behind the wrestlers’ protest.

“Today it has been seen who is behind this controversy. I have been saying from the beginning that an industrialist and the Congress have a hand in this. They are upset with me,” Singh said.

Top Indian wrestlers including Olympic medallists Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and World Championship medallist Vinesh Phogat have been on protest against Brij Bhushan since April 23, demanding FIR against the BJP leader and that he be removed from all posts.

Wrestlers had initially staged a protest in January which ended after the Sports Ministry formed an ‘oversight committee’ to look into the allegations against the WFI president. However, after no action was taken against Brij Bhushan, the wrestlers returned to protest and also moved Supreme Court.

The Delhi Police on Friday filed two FIRs against Brij Bhushan. The first FIR was registered under the POCSO Act, while the second was related to outraging modesty. Both FIRs were registered after SC’s intervention.

While talking to the media, Brij Bhushan said that all the demands of the wrestlers have been met and questioned why they were still sitting on protest. He added that it was a protest by the “conspirators”.

“An FIR has been lodged against me, yet they are sitting on dharna. Why?” he asked.

“Why are they constantly speaking against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Sports Ministry?”

“They did not wait for the investigation report to be made public and went to the Supreme Court and there raised a new allegation. They are saying that the sport has to be saved but they are not saving the game (by doing this). They have caused a huge loss in the last four months,” he said.

Read: Wrestlers say protest will continue till Brij Bhushan is arrested

Brij Bhushan, the BJP MP from Kaiserganj in Uttar Pradesh, said that all “akharas” of Haryana and UP are with him except “one family’s akhara” and claimed that he will soon be “proved innocent”.

“First they demanded an FIR and now that the FIR has been lodged, they are demanding to put me in jail. I am a member of Lok Sabha. It has not been by the grace of Vinesh Phogat (one of the wrestlers protesting at Jantar Mantar) but the people of my area have made me an MP,” Singh said.

“I have full faith in the law of the land. I will definitely be proven innocent. It has been troubling me for a long time. I and my family are being abused. Our supporters are also being targeted but my supporters and family have full faith that I am innocent. Soon, the country will also come to know about it.”

Singh has already completed 12 years as WFI president and cannot compete for another term. He said that he will resign with the election of the new president.

DC vs SRH: Ponting explains decision to drop Shaw, says 'lot of players with other teams are playing better'

Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting expected Prithvi Shaw to have a “big year” in IPL 2023 but feels that the out-of-form batter is not what the team needs “right now”. Shaw has only scored 47 runs in 6 IPL matches this season and was dropped by DC for their last game.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

“When he arrived this year, he’d been at the NCA for quite a few weeks working really hard on his fitness he turned up in good physical shape and his work ethic and training and everything in the nets suggested to me that this might be just that big year for him but that hasn’t worked out just yet,” Ponting said ahead of DC’s Saturday match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Ponting added that it was a tough decision to leave Shaw out of the team but it was made with DC’s best interests in mind.

“I think it’s 13 games (considering IPL 2022 as well) since Prithvi has made a 50 opening the batting for the Delhi capitals. There are a lot of other players at the top of the order with other teams that are playing a whole lot better than Prithvi,” Ponting added.

“Prithvi at his absolute best we know he’s a match winner. That’s one of the reasons that he’s a retained player because we know if he bats a certain amount of balls, we win about 95% of the games.

“But so far this season, he hasn’t been able to produce. I think the six games that he played was just over 40-odd runs, so that’s not what we require right now.

“So is it a tough decision to leave him out but hopefully the team that we put on the park tomorrow can go win another game for us.”

Ponting said that if Shaw gets another opportunity he is hopeful the batter will end IPL 2023 strongly.

“But saying that there’s a long way to go and if things don’t work out with our current top order, there’s no reason why he couldn’t be back in the team and hopefully can finish the tournament off really strongly.”

After five straight losses, DC are on a two-match winning streak but are still at the bottom of the table with four points from seven matches.

'There were a lot of people inside selection meetings who were not supposed to be there': Ravi Shastri

Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has revealed that selection meetings, during his tenure, were attended by people who were “not supposed” to take part in them.

While talking to ESPNCricinfo, when he asked about insights into the selection meetings, he said, “I have zero first-hand experience. In the seven years, I was part of the team, I never went near a selection meeting. I wasn’t invited either. I think, in the long run, yes. As a coach, you spend a lot of time with the boys, it’s important; not in the voting capacity, but at least to hear what’s the selectors are thinking, what’s their train of thought. And then, to decide what the right thing for the side.”

“I have zero idea how it starts, and how it finishes, and who are there in the meeting. From what I gather, there were a lot of people over the last 3-4 years inside the selection meetings, who were not supposed to be there. It’s against the constitution,” Shastri further said.

Shastri was the head coach when former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly was the BCCI president. A few media reports have said that Ganguly was present in selection meetings throughout his tenure.

Shastri had a pretty successful run as a coach. Under his guidance, India beat Australia in Australia, made strong performances in England and South Africa and won the limit-overs series in New Zealand. The side could not win any ICC title under him, however.

He left the position following the 2021 T20 World Cup. His exit saw a little chaotic time for Team India. Star batter Virar Kohli was relieved of his role as the ODI captain and a month after that he left the Test captaincy as well. There were reports of things not being right between him and the BCCI chief Ganguly.

Even recently both avoided the customary post-match handshake after an IPL match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Delhi Capitals.

Virat Kohli should lead India if Rohit Sharma unavailable: Ravi Shastri

Ravi Shastri, former India head coach, believes Virat Kohli should lead the Indian cricket team in important games such as the World Test Championship (WTC) final whenever Rohit Sharma is unavailable due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

As an example, he said Kohli should have captained the Indian team during the rescheduled fifth Test against England last year after Rohit was ruled out with COVID-19. In his absence, Jasprit Bumrah had led the side in Manchester.

“If it’s for a major game like that, I want Rohit to be fit, he is the captain. But god forbid something happens under unforeseen circumstances, definitely I’ll look in that direction,” Shastri told ESPNCricinfo.

The former India all-rounder said he would have recommended Kohli to lead in the fifth Test against England. Under his captaincy, India had taken a 2-1 lead in 2021 before a COVID-19 outbreak in the visiting camp led to the series being postponed.

In the period between the series being halted and it resuming a year later, Kohli had stepped down from his leadership role with the Indian team.

“Once Rohit was injured, I thought Virat would captain. If I was still there – I’m sure Rahul (Dravid) might have done the same thing, I have not spoken to him – I would’ve recommended to the board that it’s only fair he leads because he was captain of the team that was leading 2-1 in the series and probably could have got the best out of the team,” Shastri said.

Kohli had also given up his captaincy duties with IPL team Royal Challengers Bangalore. But with current skipper Faf du Plessis nursing a rib injury, Kohli has stepped up to take charge.

“He’s in a very good space, enjoying his cricket. That’s the feeling I got as opposed to last year when we were sitting and discussing does he need a break, does he not need a break. He seemed to have the burden of the whole world on his shoulders,” Shastri said.

“Now it’s refreshing. The enthusiasm, passionate energy and enjoyment have come back, which for me was the best thing to see. Runs you might or might not get but when you see someone, and the passion, enjoyment and drive is back again, it’s good,” he added.

Wrestler's protest: Delhi Police has cut power supply at Jantar Mantar, alleges Bajrang Punia

Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia, who is protesting with other wrestlers against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, on Friday alleged that electricity has been cut off at the protest site and supply of food and water has been suspended.

Bajrang made the allegations on Instagram hours after Delhi Police registered two First Information Reports (FIR) against Brij Bhushan pertaining to the sexual harassment allegations against the WFI chief.

The 29-year-old added that a barricade has been put around the protest site and wrestlers have been asked to end their protest after the FIRs were registered.

“Police said that if you want to protest, sleep on the road. What kind of pressure has come on them today, there was no such problem before, this has happened only because of the pressure of the Supreme Court,” he said.

Wrestlers had been protesting against Brij Bhushan since 23 April as no FIR was filed against the politician despite several complaints. The FIRs were registered after the intervention of the Supreme Court.

Wrestler Satyawart Kadian, the husband of Rio Olympics medallist Sakshi Malik, said that just the FIRs will not give justice to the victims and added that wrestling should be kept apart from politics.

“It is good that FIR has been registered. What will we get from the FIR? Will FIR get us justice? Delhi Police should have lodged an FIR on the very first day. Our on-paper fight has just started. Let’s see what our legal team & coaches have to say. We are demanding that wrestling must be separated from politics & future of our women wrestlers should be secured,” Kadian told ANI.

Sakshi Malik earlier said that FIRs against Brij Bhushan were the “first step towards victory” for the protesting wrestlers but they will not end the protest.

“We thank the Supreme Court for its directions, this is the first step towards victory for us but it does not mark the end of our protest. We will continue to sit here and, talk to our elders and then decide the way ahead,” Sakshi Malik said.

Vinesh Phogat, a World Championship medallist, said that wrestlers will continue to protest till Brij Bhushan is arrested.

“It (Police) might file a loose FIR. We will see, observe then take a decision (on calling off protest). He should be behind the bars and removed from all the posts he holds, otherwise he will try to influence the investigation,” Phogat said.

KKR vs GT, IPL 2023: Jason Roy in focus as Kolkata Knight Riders seek to continue winning momentum

The last time Kolkara Knight RIders met Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023, Rinku Singh blasted five sixes on the last five balls of the matches to help KKR secure a famous win over GT. On Saturday, these two teams will meet again in IPL 2023, with KKR hoping for another miracle to continue their revival as they are stuck in the 7th spot in the points table, while a resurgent GT will look to take the top spot on the table with a win.

KKR’s misfiring campaign finally came on track after they fired in unison to snap their four-match losing streak with a convincing win at Bangalore.

In a season their Caribbean star duo of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine are yet to fire, the low-profile KKR side without their regular skipper Shreyas Iyer may just have found a trump card in Jason Roy.

Included only in their sixth match of the season, Roy has scores of 43, 61 and 56 in three matches and KKR’s batting will once again centre around him.

From here on, KKR (six points) will have to win at least five out of their remaining six matches to assure themselves a playoff berth.

Of the six matches, KKR play two away matches, including one in Chennai, and skipper Rana and coach Chandrakant Pandit will have their task cut out against the Pandya-led defending champions.

Pandya has put out a perfect T20 template and his ability to seal close matches has caught everyone’s eyes, especially after they choked Lucknow Super Giants while defending a paltry 135 for 6.

Pandya has been a revelation as a captain since January 2022, winning 23 out of 31 matches with a victory percentage of 76.67.

GT (10 points from seven matches) have been a well-oiled unit and looks set for a successive playoff berth, sitting behind leaders Rajasthan Royals on net run rate with a match in hand.

The Titans boast of a tempting bowling line-up in India pacer Mohammad Shami who along with Pandya have caused enough flutter in the powerplay.

Shami has made it look so easy with the subtle movement of his fingers around the seam at the delivery and he will relish the challenge when he returns to his ‘home ground’.

Pandya too has been cranking up the speed, something he showed while dismissing his Mumbai Indians counterpart Rohit Sharma with a 144kph delivery.

But the likes of Rana and in-form Rinku will face the biggest challenge when they are up against the GT spinners, led by the wily Rashid Khan, who has found a new ally in his countrymate Noor Ahmed.

Following the footsteps of Rashid, the 20-year-old left-arm spinner has been relentless, especially in the middle overs.

It was on full display when they choked MI to 152 for 9 in their chase of 208 with Noor returning with figures of three for 37 that included the prized scalp of Suryakumar Yadav.

With in-form Shubman Gill (three fifties) at the top and the power-hitting trio of David Miller, Abhinav Manohar and Rahul Tewatia in the bottom-half, GT also has a fearless batting unit.

It remains to be seen how the KKR spin force cope with the challenge of bowling to the Titans, who will also have ‘home boy’ Wriddhiman Saha looking to fire at the top with Gill.

Varun Chakravarthy and rookie legspinner Suyash Sharma, who formed a winning combination against RCB, have been sharing the spin workload with veteran Narine going wicketless in five matches.

Pace bowling department too does not inspire much confidence as KKR are still searching for a perfect combination with only Umesh Yadav being the regular in all their eight matches.

They have handed debuts to Vaibhav Arora, Kulwant Khejroliya and David Wiese, while the likes of Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson and Shardul Thakur have all played musical chair.

But none of them, including the veteran Indian pacer Yadav, has impressed.

India allrounder Thakur, however, has a match-winning knock to his name and KKR might recall him for the tie.

KKR vs GT head-to-head: In two matches so far, both franchises have won one game each.

IPL 2023: KL Rahul returns to old haunt with focus on strike rate as LSG face PBKS

KL Rahul scored the fastest IPL half-century in 2018 in Mohali. He returns to the same venue on Friday as Lucknow Super Giants face Punjab Kings in Match 38 of the Indian Premier League. It comes at a time when KL Rahul’s slowed-down knock against Gujarat Titans led to an unfathomable defeat.

In Lucknow six days ago, LSG were cruising towards a below-par 136 runs before KL Rahul, who had remained steady throughout, suddenly saw things collapse right before his eyes.

The LSG skipper has a strike rate of 113.91 this season and can surely do better on that front.

But if he needs solace, Mohali is the kind of venues to do it for you. The venue has not seen a total of 200-plus but should be far friendlier than the slow burner in Lucknow.

Punjab Kings, on the other hand, have played a high-risk, high-returns game. It remains to be seen whether full time captain Shikhar Dhawan, who has missed the last three games due to a shoulder injury, makes a return.

The top-order comprising Prabhsimran Singh and Matthew Short need to stay longer in the middle while the dangerous Liam Livingstone is yet to come into his own after two games.

In Dhawan’s absence, stand-in skipper Sam Curran has shown why PBKS paid Rs 18.5 crore for his services and his contribution with both bat and ball holds key.

On the bowling front, Arshdeep Singh has been brilliant while the team will need to take a tough decision in choosing between Nathan Ellis and Kagiso Rabada.

Squads:

Punjab Kings: Shikhar Dhawan (c), Arshdeep Singh, Baltej Singh, Rahul Chahar, Sam Curran, Rishi Dhawan, Nathan Ellis, Gurnoor Brar, Harpreet Brar, Harpreet Singh, Vidwath Kaverappa, Liam Livingstone, Mohit Rathee, Prabhsimran Singh, Kagiso Rabada, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, M Shahrukh Khan, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shivam Singh, Matthew Short, Sikandar Raza, Atharva Taide.

Lucknow Super Giants: KL Rahul (c), Kyle Mayers, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, Amit Mishra, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Naveen ul Haq, Ayush Badoni, Avesh Khan, Karan Sharma, Yudhvir Charak, Yash Thakur, Romario Shepherd, Mark Wood, Swapnil Singh, Manan Vohra, Daniel Sams, Prerak Mankad, Krishnappa Gowtham, Jaydev Unadkat, Marcus Stoinis, Ravi Bishnoi and Mayank Yadav.

Ravi Shastri backs Ajinkya Rahane inclusion in WTC Final squad: 'So glad he made the side'

Ravi Shastri, former India coach, stated he’s “glad” Ajinkya Rahane is back in the Indian Test squad for the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval. The final will be played on 7-11 June.

He said the moment Shreyas Iyer got injured, it became imperative to look in that direction given his experience. It helped significantly that ‘Jinks’ scored well in domestic cricket and has been in fine touch in the ongoing Indian Premier League.

Rahane captained Mumbai in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy, where they narrowly missed the knockouts. He made 634 runs, including two centuries, in 11 innings at an average of 57.64.

Read | India WTC final squad: Why is Ajinkya Rahane back?

A night before BCCI announced the WTC final squad, Rahane stamped his name on the sheet with a 29-ball 71 for Chennai Super Kings against Kolkata Knight Riders.

“I’m so glad he’s made it to the side,” Shastri told ESPNcricinfo. “He batted beautifully in these two-three games he’s played in the IPL, has looked in great touch. And let’s not forget the experience he has. The moment Shreyas Iyer was injured, you had to look in that direction.”

“People think he’s just played three IPL games and that’s why he’s in the side. They must have been on holiday for six months when he was playing first-class cricket. They must’ve been somewhere in the jungle where there’s no contact with anyone in the world. When you go six months into a holiday, you miss those 600 runs.”

Rahane’s last Test was against South Africa in January 2022. In those four innings, he scored just 68 runs. A year earlier, in 2021, he scored mere 479 runs in 13 Test matches at an average of 20.82. The last century had come against Australia in December 2020.

Read | Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, Harbhajan Singh share opinion on India squad for WTC final

Shastri compared Rahane’s comeback to that of Cheteshwar Pujara. He, too, ran out of favour following the tour of South Africa last year. But constant runs in county cricket led to his return.

“Absolutely, it’s a one-off big game, like the Super Bowl, and you need your experienced player,” Shastri said of Rahane’s inclusion. “Don’t forget just two-and-a-half years ago, the man won a Test series in Australia. He was the captain when Virat [Kohli] went [on paternity leave] and did a sterling job.

“People forget that hundred at the MCG, the way he played, and the fact that he’s gone back to the grind. You saw what it did with (Cheteshwar) Pujara, he went back to the grind playing domestic cricket, playing county cricket, just got the number of runs under his belt, then came back into Test cricket and performed. It’s the same thing with Rahane, let’s hope that experience comes handy.”

When asked if current form, even if in the IPL, and ball striking may have played a role in Rahane’s return, Shastri agreed.

“Oh, a lot, because the memory is fresh,” he responded. “Domestic cricket was over two months ago. People might tend to forget it, even the selectors. Suddenly you come in and play that kind of innings where you look at ease, the timing is good, the footwork is good, the confidence is good, it would’ve definitely helped.”

Jiah Khan case verdict: Sooraj Pancholi found 'not guilty' due to lack of evidence

Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab’s son and Bollywood actor Sooraj Pancholi gets relief after he gets acquitted in the Jiah Khan suicide case by the special CBI court on Friday due to lack of evidence. He was charged with abutment.

The court said, “Due to paucity of evidence, this court can’t hold you (Sooraj Pancholi) guilty, hence acquitted, says Judge AS Sayyed of special CBI court in Mumbai.” After Sooraj got clean chit, late Jiah Khan’s mother Rabia’s lawyer said, “We will appeal in higher court after studying the judgement.” The actress’ mother told CNN-News 18, “I will not give up hope… will keep fighting. This is a case of murder.”

Sooraj was present in the court with his mother at the time of the verdict.

Sooraj was arrested in the case in June 2013 and released on bail in July 2013.

Jiah (25), an American citizen, was found dead at her Juhu home here on June 3, 2013. Police later arrested Sooraj on the basis of a six-page letter, purportedly written by the Bollywood starlet.

In his final statement to the court on April 12, 2023, Sooraj Pancholi had said that he had been booked in a false case and that he was the victim of a false prosecution and persecution.

In that statement, he said he had broken down when he heard about Jiah’s death and said, “I had lost the most important person of my life and the woman whom I truly loved.”

SCO Meeting: Rajnath Singh calls for unity in fight against terrorism

SCO Meeting: Highlighting the fact that terrorist groups are using innovative methods to further their agenda, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh urged member nations to fight terrorism in a united manner during his speech at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers meeting that began in New Delhi on Friday.

“We should unitedly fight terrorism. If SCO has to emerge stronger, we have to fight together. Terror groups are using new methods like social media and crowdfunding,” Rajnath Singh said.

The Defence Minister further stated that India is fully committed to making SCO stronger, contributing to the implementation of SCO’s mandate.

“India is fully committed to making SCO stronger, contributing to the implementation of SCO’s mandate and facing our common challenges,” he said.

Notably, United Nations (UN) proscribed Pakistani terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) has been seen openly collecting funds in Peshawar, according to several accounts.

"The open fundraising by the banned terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in Peshawar, Pakistan, has raised concerns about the resurgence of extremist groups in the country. The group, responsible for several terrorist attacks," tweeted Shaukat Ali Kashmiri, exiled leader & founder of the United Kashmir People's National Party (UKPNP).

JeM remerged after Financial Action Task Force (FATF) relaxation last year. They are openly backed by Pakistan security personnel. Global terror-financing watchdog FATF in October 2022 announced Pakistan's removal from its grey list, stating that the country has largely completed its action plans on anti-money laundering and financing of terrorism. Pakistan has been on the FATF grey list since June 2018.

Jaish Fund collection isn't limited to Peshawar but is also visible in Pakistan's Punjab, Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir and other areas.

The ease with which these groups can openly collect funds raises concerns about the government's ability to crack down on terrorist activities.

"To ensure a secure, stable and prosperous region, we need to focus on our agenda. This will help in improving the quality of life of the people of each member country," said Singh at SCO Defence Ministers' Meeting.

It has been 14 years since Pakistan-sponsored terrorists struck Mumbai. The evidence of Pakistan's links behind the bloodbath that went on for three days in Mumbai was there for all to see. However, Pakistan chose to ignore India's requests to bring the perpetrators of the act to justice over the past 14 years.

IPL 2023: CSK won't mess with batting order, says Stephen Fleming

Chennai Super Kings fell 32 runs short of Rajasthan Royals‘ imposing 203 runs target in Jaipur on Thursday. Despite the defeat, and seeing RR do a double over them, CSK coach Stephen Fleming said they didn’t feel the need to change their batting order.

With a 203 run target in front of them, something that MS Dhoni said was above par, CSK managed 170/6. It was their third loss in eight matches this IPL season.

When asked if CSK should have sent some of the big-hitters up the order, including Dhoni himself, Fleming said, “The set roles are very important. (Ajinkya) Rahane has been great for us at No. 3. We don’t mess with things that are going well.

“It was just today we came up against a team that took the pace off the ball. We couldn’t get any real momentum in the first six overs.

“Devon Conway, who is in outstanding form, couldn’t get underway. The rhythm of the innings was slow. When we tried to catch the game up, we made mistakes.”

The difference between the two sides came in the powerplay overs. Where RR scored 64/0 in the first six overs, for a total of 202/5, CSK managed just 42/1 in reply. “The first six overs, they were outstanding with the bat and the ball as well. That just set the two innings up for them,” Fleming said.

“We could have been better, but part of that is playing away from home — trying to find out the right length to bowl, what sort of swing conditions we are going to get. That’s part of the challenge of playing away,” he added.

CSK were unlucky when the edges off RR player’s bats went for boundaries and narrowly evaded the fielders. “This pitch was a lot different in appearance than the last one. It played well. It was starting to get a bit slower towards the end, but Rajasthan played a great home game. They came out of the blocks really well. (Yashasvi) Jaiswal played a great innings to create some momentum,” the coach added.

“We came back quite nicely in the game. We were a little bit unlucky. In the last 3-4 overs, just with a few nicks, probably 16-20 runs more than what we thought. That’s just how the game goes. Those extra 20 runs made it quite tough.”

Chennai Super Kings’ next match is against the Punjab Kings at home on Sunday.

WTC Final: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sarfaraz Khan and Ishan Kishan among India's standby players, says report

The BCCI have selected Sarfaraz Khan, Ishan Kishan, Navdeep Saini, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mukesh Kumar as standby players for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia in June, a report in Times of India said on Thursday.

While the BCCI on Tuesday had announced the 15-member squad for the showpiece event, the board had not named standby players at the time. One notable name in the main squad was Ajinkya Rahane, who returned to India’s Test fold after 15 months.

Kishan is a designated wicketkeeper-batter, while Sarfraraz and Gaikwad are specialist batters. Saini and Mukesh are the two medium pacers among the standby players.

The report also adds that India might play a warm-up match ahead of the WTC Final, with players who are not part of IPL 2023 playoffs likely to go to the UK earlier.

The ongoing IPL’s final will be played in Ahmedabad on 28 May. The WTC Final gets underway at The Oval from 7 June.

BCCI central contracts: Richa Ghosh, Jemimah Rodrigues promoted to B category; Shikha Pandey dropped

BCCI have promoted wicket-keeper batter Richa Ghosh and Jemimah Rodrigues to Category ‘B’ in the central contracts for the 2022-23 season while dropping Shikha Pandey and Taniya Bhatia. The contract period runs from October to September.

For Category ‘A’, the board has kept only three players: skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, star batter Smriti Mandhana and all-rounder Deepti Sharma.

Those in ‘A’ category get paid Rs 50 lakh over and above match fees, while those in B and C get Rs 30 lakh and Rs 10 lakh respectively.

While all three senior players are retained in the highest category, spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad has been dropped to the B category.

Leg spinner Poonam Yadav, who was in the A category last year, has not been offered a central contract at all. She last played for the national team in March 2022.

Veteran pacer Shikha Pandey who was included in the squad for the T20 World Cup in South Africa, finds herself without a contract as does wicket-keeper Taniya Bhatia.

Seamer Renuka Thakur has been included in the B category while being out of an annual contract last year.

New entrants in Category C are: pacer Meghna Singh, batter Devika Vaidya, opener S Meghana, Radha Yadav, left-arm pacer Anjali Sarvani and batter Yastika Bhatia.

Harleen Deol and Sneh Rana remain in the lowest category while injury-prone all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar has been dropped to C category from B.

The BCCI, which announced equal pay for women cricketers last year, has kept the number of contracted to 17.

IPL 2023: At the halfway mark, here's how teams have performed so far

The upcoming clash between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur will be the 37th match of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL), meaning the 74-match season will officially be hitting the halfway mark.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

And it sure has been a roller-coaster ride, with the 16th edition of the league perhaps having more twists and turns than any other. Call it the result of the ‘Impact Player’ rule, but there have been a number of last-minute twists and last over nail-biters this season. From Rinku Singh’s five consecutive sixes to epic final overs from the likes of Sandeep Sharma and Arshdeep Singh, it has already been a season to remember.

Ahead of Round 2 between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, we take a look at how the teams have performed so far this season.

The top-four

Four-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and title-holders Gujarat Titans (GT) currently occupy the top of the 10-team table with 10 points each, with CSK occupying the top spot due to their superior Net Run Rate. CSK appear to be on a roll at the moment, having won each of their last three matches after getting off to a shaky start. These two sides appear favourites to lock horns in Qualifier 1 with how things are going.

Chennai Super Kings currently occupy the top spot on the IPL 2023 points table with five wins in seven games. Sportzpics

They’re closely followed by Rajasthan Royals (RR), who appear to have carried on from where they left off after a runner-up finish last year, followed by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) — the two sides having the better NRR of the four teams tied on eight points each. In essence, the current top four in the Indian Premier League isn’t very different from the teams that competed in the playoffs last year, with CSK replacing Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) being the only difference.

Mid-table

RCB lie immediately outside the top four spots. They would have fancied going past RR and LSG in third spot, only for the Nitish Rana-led KKR to complete a season double against them in style. RCB have been a mixed bag so far. While they have arguably the most complete top-order this season in Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell with Mohammed Siraj an absolute revelation in the powerplay overs, RCB haven’t quite been able to finish games they way they would have hoped.

RCB IPL 2023
RCB openers Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli have been the most successful batters so far this season. AP

It’s been a similar story for the Punjab Kings, who certainly have shown a lot more promise under Shikhar Dhawan and Sam Curran’s leadership — the latter taking over after ‘Gabbar’ was sidelined with a shoulder injury. They began on a solid note with back-to-back victories — giving the team owners hope of reaching the playoffs for the first time in nine years — but have had a mixed run since. Their victory over Mumbai Indians, however, underlines the potential that this team has in breaking into the top-four, especially with their power-hitters in the middle order and an exceptional death bowler in Arshdeep Singh.

And at the seventh spot are KKR, who have given their hopes of reaching the playoffs a boost following a convincing victory over RCB that snapped their four-game losing streak. KKR’s strength lies in their stacked spin department — which played a key role in both of their wins against RCB this season. Additionally, with a new power hitter in Jason Roy at the top of the order, the two-time champions can still put up a fight in the second half of the group stage.

Bottom half

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians would be extremely disappointed with how their season has panned out so far. Not only would failure to reach the playoffs for a third season in a row be a first for Mumbai and tarnish the legacy of the most successful franchise in the history of the world’s biggest T20 league, it would also demoralise what is a vastly talended squad filled with a number of promising youngsters.

GT vs MI IPL 2023
Mumbai Indians currently lie at the eighth spot with three wins and four defeats in seven outings. Sportzpics

Mumbai afterall, did go through a major transition with a number of their match winners such as Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya either hanging up their boots or joining other franchises. While some of the new recruits such as Cameron Green, Tim David, Tilak Varma, Hrithik Shokeen have shown glimpses of their brilliance this season, the team hasn’t quite been able to fire as a unit. Their three wins in seven games have all come against teams lingering in the lower half of the table.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals lie at the bottom of the table with two wins each in seven outings, the latter at the 10th spot due to their inferior NRR. Delhi, however, are the team that is on the mend between the two. They opened their account with a victory over KKR before successfully defending a low total against SRH to give glimmer of a late miracle.
